Sabbatical Projects
During a Fall 2018 sabbatical, Nancy Holcroft, professor, Biology, developed experiential learning opportunities for JCCC students through two projects. The first project involved the creation of a dual-listed JCCC Honors/Science Special Topics biology course based on the National Collegiate Honors Council’s “Partners in the Parks” model. This course, to be offered in Spring 2020, will allow JCCC students to explore first-hand the biodiversity of the Black Hills and Badlands regions of South Dakota. In the second project, Holcroft performed servicelearning at Cedar Cove Feline Conservatory and Education Center in Louisburg, Kansas, in preparation for offering service-learning contracts in her JCCC …

Changes in gene expression can rapidly influence adaptive traits in the early stages of lineage diversification. Venom is an adaptive trait comprised of numerous toxins used for prey capture and defense. Snake venoms can vary widely between conspecific populations, but the influence of lineage diversification on such compositional differences are unknown. To explore venom differentiation in the early stages of lineage diversification, we used RNA-seq and mass spectrometry to characterize Sidewinder Rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes) venom. We generated the first venom-gland transcriptomes and complementary venom proteomes for eight individuals collected across the United States and tested for expression differences …

Music & Neuroscience As A Digital Therapeutic For Walking, Brian Harris
Crossroads of Music and Technology
With the advancement of both neuroscience and clinical research demonstrating the ability of music to enhance functional outcomes, there is an ever-growing need to identify opportunities to deliver and solutions to facilitate these improved outcomes to patients. This need is amplified in the face of a growing and aging population that faces rising healthcare costs and a fractured healthcare delivery system. Digital therapeutics will play an important role in bringing these interventions to the people who need and deserve to have them.

Als Yeast Models-Past Success Stories And New Opportunities, Sonja E. Di Gregorio, Martin L. Duennwald
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
In the past two decades, yeast models have delivered profound insights into basic mechanisms of protein misfolding and the dysfunction of key cellular pathways associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Expressing ALS-associated proteins, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD1), TAR DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) and Fused in sarcoma (FUS), in yeast recapitulates major hallmarks of ALS pathology, including protein aggregation, mislocalization and cellular toxicity. Results from yeast have consistently been recapitulated in other model systems and even specimens from human patients, thus providing evidence for the power and validity of ALS yeast models. Focusing on impaired ribonucleic acid (RNA) metabolism …

The ability to accurately integrate or bind stimuli from more than one sensory modality is highly dependent on the features of the stimuli, such as their intensity and relative timing. Previous studies have demonstrated that the ability to perceptually bind stimuli is impaired in various clinical conditions such as autism, dyslexia, schizophrenia, as well as aging. However, it remains unknown if adult-onset hearing loss, separate from aging, influences audiovisual temporal acuity. In the present study, rats were trained using appetitive operant conditioning to perform an audiovisual temporal order judgment (TOJ) task or synchrony judgment (SJ) task in order to investigate …

Brain health plays a central role in wellbeing and in the management of chronic diseases. Stroke and dementia pose the two greatest threats to brain health, but recent developments suggest the possibility that preventing stroke may also prevent some dementias: 1. A large population study showed a 32% decrease in the incidence of stroke and a concomitant 7% reduction in the incidence of dementia; 2. Treatment of atrial fibrillation resulted not only in stroke reduction, but a 48% decrease in dementia; 3. A hypothesis free analyses has shown that the first phase of Alzheimer disease involves vascular dysregulation, opening the …

Sensory processing, and auditory processing in particular, is altered in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The typical maturation of the auditory system is perturbed in these individuals during early development, which may underlie altered auditory reactivity that persists in later life. Of the many genes that regulate the auditory system development, loss-of-function mutations in the CNTNAP2 gene are strongly associated with language processing deficits and ASD. Therefore, using a novel Cntnap2 knock-out rat model, we tested the impact of Cntnap2 loss on auditory processing, filtering, and reactivity throughout development and young adulthood in male and …

The Role Of Cholinergic Midbrain Neurons In Startle And Prepulse Inhibition, Erin Azzopardi, Andrea G. Louttit, Cleusa Deoliveira, Steven R, Laviolette, Susanne Schmid
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
One of the two major cholinergic centers of the mammalian brain is located in the midbrain, i.e., the pedunculopontine tegmentum (PPTg) and the adjacent laterodorsal tegmentum. These cholinergic neurons have been shown to be important for e.g., arousal, reward associations, and sleep. They also have been suggested to mediate sensorimotor gating, measured as prepulse inhibition of startle (PPI). PPI disruptions are a hallmark of schizophrenia and are observed in various other psychiatric disorders, where they are associated with, and often predictive of, other cognitive symptoms. PPI has been proposed to be mediated by a short midbrain circuitry including inhibitory cholinergic …

Psychosocial stress plays an important role in periodontal disease through biological and behavioral pathways. In this paper we review studies that examine the relationship between stress and periodontal diseases, and discuss the different measures used to assess stress. Self-reported measures, such as the Perceived Stress Scale and the Stress Appraisal Measure, have traditionally been used to assess stress. Frequent and repeated exposure to stressor(s) leads to wear and tear of the body's systems, resulting in what is known as allostatic load. In recent years, few studies examining the relationship between stress and periodontal diseases have used an aggregate variable, including …

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this case study was to investigate faculty perceptions of participating in a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) and how the FLC contributed toward their pedagogical use of e-portfolios. The researchers were also interested in faculty perceptions of the potential impact of e-portfolios on student learning. An online survey and focus group were used to collect data for this study. Results suggest that the FLC, as a professional development experience, enabled faculty at different levels of e-portfolio adoption, to learn from their peers, become more confident instructors, reflect on course design, and plan for changes in the instructional use …

Extensive, yet disparate, research exists elucidating structural anomalies in individuals with Reading Disability (RD) or ADHD. Despite ADHD and RD being highly comorbid, minimal research has attempted to determine shared patterns of morphometry between these disorders. In addition, there is no published research examining the morphometry of comorbid RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD). Hence, we conducted voxel-based morphometry on the MRI scans of 106 children, ages 8-12 years, with RD, ADHD, or RD/ADHD, and typically developing controls. We found right caudate and superior frontal regions in both RD and ADHD, along with areas specific to RD and to ADHD that are …

Hazardous Waste Minimization Plan
Hazardous Waste Minimization Plan
Environmental Health & Safety Policies
University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis (UHSP) is classified as a “small quantity generator” of hazardous waste by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These agencies enforce the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1984, which requires a “large quantity generator” to certify that it has a program in place to reduce the volume and toxicity of waste generated to the degree it has determined to be economically practicable (RCRA Sections 3002(b) and 3005(h)).
Waste Minimization is necessary in order to minimize present and future threats to human health and …
Hazardous Waste Management Program
Hazardous Waste Management Program
Environmental Health & Safety Policies
The primary purpose of this program is to help University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, a small-quantity generator of hazardous wastes, comply with federal and state laws pertaining to proper hazardous waste management procedures. Small Quantity Generators are institutions that produce between 220 and 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste monthly, or that accumulate such amounts. Hazardous waste regulations often are complex and difficult to interpret. A six-step compliance procedure has been chosen for the program. These steps include:
- Identification of hazardous waste;
- Registration of waste streams;
- Storing and labeling hazardous waste;
- Safety requirements;
- Transportation, management and disposal …

Missing data are frequently encountered in longitudinal clinical trials. To better monitor and understand the progress over time, one must handle the missing data appropriately and examine whether the missing data mechanism is ignorable or nonignorable. In this article, we develop a new probit model for longitudinal binary response data. It resolves a challenging issue for estimating the variance of the random effects, and substantially improves the convergence and mixing of the Gibbs sampling algorithm. We show that when improper uniform priors are specified for the regression coefficients of the joint multinomial model via a sequence of one-dimensional conditional distributions …
