Dissolved and particulate organic carbon, suspended particulate matter concentrations, and their optical proxies colored dissolved organic matter absorption and backscattering coefficients were studied in Galveston Bay, Texas, following the extreme flooding of Houston and surrounding areas due to Hurricane Harvey (25–29 August 2017) using field and ocean color observations. A three-step empirical-semianalytic algorithm for determination of colored dissolved organic matter absorption and backscattering coefficients revealed the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon and particle distribution from Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometric Suite ocean color. Environmental drivers, especially floodwater discharge and winds, strongly influenced the spatiotemporal distribution of dissolved/particulate material in the …

A Biological Switching Valve Evolved In The Female Of A Sex-Role Reversed Cave Insect To Receive Multiple Seminal Packages, Kazunori Yoshizawa
KIP Articles
We report a functional switching valve within the female genitalia of the Brazilian cave insect Neotrogla. The valve complex is composed of two plate-like sclerites, a closure element, and in-and-outflow canals. Females have a penis-like intromittent organ to coercively anchor males and obtain voluminous semen. The semen is packed in a capsule, whose formation is initiated by seminal injection. It is not only used for fertilization but also consumed by the female as nutrition. The valve complex has two slots for insemination so that Neotrogla can continue mating while the first slot is occupied. In conjunction with the female penis, …

A hopeful vision of the future is a world in which both people and nature thrive, but there is little evidence to support the feasibility of such a vision. We used a global, spatially explicit, systems modeling approach to explore the possibility of meeting the demands of increased populations and economic growth in 2050 while simultaneously advancing multiple conservation goals. Our results demonstrate that if, instead of “business as usual” practices, the world changes how and where food and energy are produced, this could help to meet projected increases in food (54%) and energy (56%) demand while achieving habitat protection …

That Suggestion: Catholic Casuistry, Complexity, And Macbeth, John E. Curran Jr.
English Faculty Research and Publications
In a keeping with the view that Shakespeare harbored a sympathetic attitude to Catholic ways of seeing, this essay argues that Macbeth is a study in the dangers of oversimplification and certainty. In contradistinction to how Spenser’s Redcrosse Knight escapes the Cave of Despaire, Macbeth would benefit greatly from probing, questioning, nuancing, and sifting through ambiguity. He needs to examine the particular attenuation of his own moral thinking, and needs to engage equivocation, in the forms of both amphibology and mental reservation.

Background: Cancer cachexia occurs in approximately 80% of cancer patients and is a key contributor to cancer-related death. The mechanisms controlling development of tumour-induced muscle wasting are not fully elucidated. Specifically, the progression and development of cancer cachexia are underexplored. Therefore, we examined skeletal muscle protein turnover throughout the development of cancer cachexia in tumour-bearing mice. Methods: Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) was injected into the hind flank of C57BL6/J mice at 8 weeks age with tumour allowed to develop for 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks and compared with PBS injected control. Muscle size was measured by cross-sectional area analysis …

Growth models estimate life history parameters that are used in the management of fisheries stocks. The most commonly used growth model in fisheries is the von Bertalanffy growth model (VBGM), yet it has been shown to provide a poor fit for length-at-age data of some species and other models exist. I reviewed 196 peer-reviewed age and growth studies and 50 NOAA stock assessments to examine temporal trends in the use of growth models and model selection in fisheries. I found that the use of multi-model frameworks has increased since the year 2000 and information theoretic approaches are replacing goodness-of-fit and …
Iron-Sulfur Cluster Biogenesis And Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Jing Yang
Iron-Sulfur Cluster Biogenesis And Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Jing Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Iron-sulfur clusters as key cofactors are involved in multiple cellular processes, such as central metabolism and respiration, gene regulation and DNA repair. In Escherichia coli, iron-sulfur clusters are assembled by a group of dedicated proteins. While the sulfide in iron-sulfur clusters is derived from L-cysteine via cysteine desulfurase IscS, the iron source still remains unknown. It has been proposed that IscA and its paralog SufA may act as iron chaperones for iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis. The first part of this work focuses on the interplay between cysteine desulfurase IscS and iron chaperons IscA/SufA. The results show that deletion of IscA/SufA …

BACKGROUND: An international effort to develop an acute and humane toxic bait for invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa) is underway to curtail their expansion. We evaluated the ability to expose a population of wild pigs to a simulated toxic bait (i.e., placebo bait containing a biomarker, rhodamine B, in lieu of the toxic ingredient) to gain insight on potential population reduction. We used 28 GPS-collars and sampled 428 wild pigs to examine their vibrissae for evidence of consuming the bait.
RESULTS: We estimated that 91% of wild pigs within 0.75 km of bait sites (total area = 16.8 …

Opioid use disorder impedes dependent parents' abilities to care for their children. In turn, children may languish in unpredictability and persistent chaos. Societal responses to these children are often guided by a belief that unless the drug dependent parent receives treatment, there is little help for the child. While a preponderance of the drug dependence research is adult-centric, a significant body of research demonstrates the importance of not only addressing the immediate well being of the children of drug dependent caregivers but preventing the continuing cycle of drug dependence. The present commentary demonstrates through a brief review of the US …

The ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase from wheat endosperm controls starch synthesis in seeds and has unique regulatory properties compared to others from this family. It comprises two types of subunits, but despite its importance little is known about their roles. Here, we synthesized de novo the wheat endosperm ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase small (S) and large (L) subunit genes, heterologously expressed them in Escherichia coli, and kinetically characterized the recombinant proteins. To understand their distinct roles, we co-expressed them with well characterized subunits from the potato tuber enzyme to obtain hybrids with one S subunit from one source and an L subunit from …

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia in the elderly, is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. We hypothesize that the impaired clearance of Aβ42 from the brain is partly responsible for the onset of sporadic AD. In this work, we evaluated the activity of insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) toward Aβ42 in the presence of resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine and grape juice. By liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, we identified initial cleavage sites in the absence and presence of resveratrol that carry biological relevance connected to the amyloidogenic properties of Aβ42. Incubation with resveratrol …

The Intervention Path: The Experiences Of Mothers Seeking Help For Their Child With Atypical Behavioral Development, Renee Hoopes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pre-school aged children experience challenging behaviors at a relatively common rate. Research shows that approximately 10–25 % of preschool-aged children engage in challenging behaviors to a greater degree than would be expected for their age (Lavigne, Gibbons, Christoffel, Arend, Rosenbaum, Binns, Sawon, Sobel & Isaacs, 1996). Problem behaviors are often the result of a child not following a typical developmental trajectory. Atypical development appears when a child either lags behind or jumps ahead of typical peer progress in physical, cognitive, behavioral, and social development or in adaptive life skills. When children with challenging behaviors are left untreated, their everyday functioning …

Tumor hypoxia reduces the effectiveness of radiation therapy by limiting the biologically effective dose. An acute increase in tumor oxygenation before radiation treatment should therefore significantly improve the tumor cell kill after radiation. Efforts to increase oxygen delivery to the tumor have not shown positive clinical results. Here we show that targeting mitochondrial respiration results in a significant reduction of the tumor cells’ demand for oxygen, leading to increased tumor oxygenation and radiation response. We identified an activity of the FDA-approved drug papaverine as an inhibitor of mitochondrial complex I. We also provide genetic evidence that papaverine’s complex I inhibition …

CLBQ14 is an 8-hydroxyquinoline analogue that inhibits methionine aminopeptidase (MetAP), an enzyme responsible for the post-translational modification of several proteins and polypeptides. MetAP has been validated as druggable target for some infectious diseases, and its inhibitors have been investigated as potential therapeutic agents. In this study, we developed and validated a liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the quantification of CLBQ14 in solution, and in rat plasma and urine. This method was applied to the pharmacokinetic evaluation of CLBQ14 in adult male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Chromatographic separation was achieved using an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system equipped with …

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars differ in their resistance to sudden death syndrome (SDS), caused by Fusarium virguliforme (Aoki). Breeding for improving SDS response has been challenging, due to the large number of known resistance loci (more than 43) and interactions among them. The aims here were to compare the inheritance of resistance to SDS in a near isogenic line (NIL) population that was fixed for 91.5% of the genome but appeared to segregated at loci underlying partial resistance to SDS; to examine the interaction with the loci; and to identify regions containing candidate genes underlying QTL. Used were; …
