Mule Deer Impede Pando’S Recovery: Implications For Aspen Resilience From A Single-Genotype Forest, Paul C. Rogers, Darren J. Mcavoy
Ecology Center Publications
Aspen ecosystems (upland Populus-dominated forests) support diverse species assemblages in many parts of the northern hemisphere, yet are imperiled by common stressors. Extended drought, fire suppression, human development, and chronic herbivory serve to limit the sustainability of this keystone species. Here we assess conditions at a renowned quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) grove—purportedly the largest living organism on earth—with ramifications for aspen biogeography globally. The “Pando” clone is 43 ha and estimated to contain 47,000 genetically identical aspen ramets. This iconic forest is threatened in particular by herbivory, and current management activities aim to reverse the potential for …

Multiple sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) is the leading cause of non-traumatic neurological disability in young adults. Immune mediated destruction of myelin and oligodendrocytes is considered the primary pathology of MS, but progressive axonal loss is the major cause of neurological disability. In an effort to understand microglia function during CNS inflammation, our laboratory focuses on the fractalkine/CX3CR1 signaling as a regulator of microglia neurotoxicity in various models of neurodegeneration. Fractalkine (FKN) is a transmembrane chemokine expressed in the CNS by neurons and signals through its unique receptor CX3CR1 present in microglia. During …

Application Of High-Frequency Impedancemetry Approach In Measuring The Deposition Velocities Of Biomass And Sand Slurry Flows In Pipelines, Mahdi Vaezi, Shubham Verma, Amit Kumar
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Since the lower limit to operating velocities in slurry transport systems is influenced by deposition conditions, measuring the ″deposition velocity″ is an essential step in slurry pipelines’ design and operation. This study proposes a new experimental technique in measuring deposition velocities in slurry pipeline transport called the high-frequency impedancemetry approach. This non-invasive technique of measuring electrical properties of substances, based on their frequency-dependent behavior, was applied using a 16-electrode impedancemetry device on a 25 m long closed-circuit pipeline to measure the deposition velocities of sand- and biomass-water mixture flows. Slurries of play and gravel sands, as well as wheat straw …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Measuring the research quality of academics to assess the performance of departments, research institutes, universities or even the researchers by themselves is a trend now across the globe. Quality is a journey which can only be judged through the scholarly communications produced, especially papers published in journals. However, assessing the quality of individual papers by peer review is not trouble-free and sometimes leads to disagreement too. Partly for these reasons, the quality of the journal that the paper is published in is widely taken into consideration for the quality of the paper itself. The present study explores the publication pattern …
Linking Gait Dynamics To Mechanical Cost Of Legged Locomotion, David V. Lee, Sarah L. Harris
Linking Gait Dynamics To Mechanical Cost Of Legged Locomotion, David V. Lee, Sarah L. Harris
Life Sciences Faculty Research
For millenia, legged locomotion has been of central importance to humans for hunting, agriculture, transportation, sport, and warfare. Today, the same principal considerations of locomotor performance and economy apply to legged systems designed to serve, assist, or be worn by humans in urban and natural environments. Energy comes at a premium not only for animals, wherein suitably fast and economical gaits are selected through organic evolution, but also for legged robots that must carry sufficient energy in their batteries. Although a robot's energy is spent at many levels, from control systems to actuators, we suggest that the mechanical cost of …

Learning To Become A Primary Care Professional: Insights From Threshold Concept Theory., Hilary Neve
Peninsula Medical School
Threshold Concepts are fundamental ideas within a discipline which are transformative, integrative, irreversible and usually troublesome. This article describes the threshold concept framework and discusses how it can offer new insights into how we focus teaching and facilitate learning around these concepts, such as uncertainty. Relevant research from a range of health disciplines are explored to consider which concepts may be critical to thinking and practising effectively in primary care. In addition, it is proposed that threshold concepts may have relevance to the GP recruitment crisis.
Public-Private Conservation Agreements And The Greater Sage-Grouse, Justin R. Pidot
Public-Private Conservation Agreements And The Greater Sage-Grouse, Justin R. Pidot
Public Land & Resources Law Review
In 2015, the Obama Administration announced its conservation plans for the greater sage-grouse, an iconic bird of the intermountain west.Political leadership at the time described those plans as the “largest landscape-level conservation effort in U.S. history,”and they served as the foundation for a decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“FWS”) that a listing of the bird was not warranted under the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”). The Trump Administration appears poised to substantially amend the plans, although an array of interested parties have urged that the plans be left intact. Regardless of the outcome of this debate, conservation of …
Streamlining The Production Of Clean Energy: Proposals To Reform The Hydroelectricity Licensing Process, Travis Kavulla, Laura Farkas
Streamlining The Production Of Clean Energy: Proposals To Reform The Hydroelectricity Licensing Process, Travis Kavulla, Laura Farkas
Public Land & Resources Law Review
Hydroelectric power is an efficient and clean source of power. In an era when air emissions dominate public concern about the environmental effects of the energy sector, it is a paradox that among the most highly regulated energy projects are hydroelectric dams, which do not combust fuel. This is partly due to a failure of successive statutory enactments, which have transformed hydroelectric licensing from a regulatory “one-stop shop” with a single regulator, to a process chained to a bewilderingnumber of often conflicting regulatory agencies, often riven with delay. Hydroelectric licensing has also failed because its capacious standard of review encourages special-interest …

Three Alternatives For Managing Free-Roaming Horses And Burros: A Legal Reform, C.J. Michaels
Natural Resources Journal
The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act is overdue for repeal or revision. The Wild Horse and Burro Program is expensive for taxpayers, detrimental to rangelands, and harmful to the thousands of free-roaming equines it is intended to benefit. For nearly half a century, the Bureau of Land Management and United States Forest Service have struggled to balance the mandates of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act amidst a political and social climate that makes compliance impossible. Forty-six years after the Act was passed, the agencies are further from arriving at a solution than they have ever been. The …
