BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified genetic variants associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in extremely preterm infants. However, findings with genome-wide significance have been rare, and not replicated. We hypothesized that whole exome sequencing (WES) of premature subjects with extremely divergent phenotypic outcomes could facilitate the identification of genetic variants or gene networks contributing disease risk.

RESULTS: The Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program (PROP) recruited a cohort of > 765 extremely preterm infants for the identification of markers of respiratory morbidity. We completed WES on 146 PROP subjects (85 affected, 61 unaffected) representing extreme phenotypes of early respiratory morbidity. We tested for …

Cytoprotective Effects Of Natural Compounds Against Oxidative Stress, Jay Mehta, Srujana Rayalam, Xinyu Wang Oct 2018

Cytoprotective Effects Of Natural Compounds Against Oxidative Stress, Jay Mehta, Srujana Rayalam, Xinyu Wang

PCOM Scholarly Works

Oxidative stress, an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidants, has been witnessed in pathophysiological states of many disorders. Compounds identified from natural sources have long been recognized to ameliorate oxidative stress due to their inherent antioxidant activities. Here, we summarize the cytoprotective effects and mechanisms of natural or naturally derived synthetic compounds against oxidative stress. These compounds include: caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) found in honey bee propolis, curcumin from turmeric roots, resveratrol abundant in grape, and 1-[2-cyano-3,12-dioxooleana-1,9(11)-dien-28-oyl] imidazole (CDDO-Im), a synthetic triterpenoid based on naturally occurring oleanolic acid. Cytoprotective effects of these compounds in diseases conditions like cardiovascular …

Strengthening Ecological And Health Hazards Study Of Marine Microplastics And Promoting Risk Regulatory And Control Capacities, Xu Xiangrong, Sun Chengjun, Ji Rong, Wang Juying, Wu Chenxi, Shi Huahong, Luo Yongming Oct 2018

Strengthening Ecological And Health Hazards Study Of Marine Microplastics And Promoting Risk Regulatory And Control Capacities, Xu Xiangrong, Sun Chengjun, Ji Rong, Wang Juying, Wu Chenxi, Shi Huahong, Luo Yongming

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

In the last decade, microplastic pollution in marine environments has aroused great concern of international society. The adverse biological impacts of microplastics on marine biota directly promote the issue of laws to ban the sale or distribution of cosmetics containing synthetic plastic microbeads. However, it is still necessary to find more scientific evidences for the testification of potential harms of microplastics to the ecological and human health in order to take the further action to manage and control the global microplastic pollution. This paper emphasizes that it is urgent to study the ecological and health hazards of marine microplastics. The …

Pay Attention To Research On Microplastic Pollution In Soil For Prevention Of Ecological And Food Chain Risks, Luo Yongming, Zhou Qian, Zhang Haibo, Pan Xiangliang, Tu Chen, Li Lianzhen, Yang Jie

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Marine microplastic pollution considered as an emerging environmental problem has been highly recognized worldwide. Comparatively, no such attention has been paid on soil microplastic pollution especially in agricultural land. This paper reviews research progress in sources, accumulation, degradation, transport, and potential risks in eco-environment and food chain, and suggests relevant countermeasures in governance and research. It is also pointed out that microplastics may enter into the agricultural soils through various sources and pathways, including agricultural film breaking, organic manure application, water irrigation, sewage sludge utilization, atmospheric deposition, and surface runoff, and then accumulate in surface layer, while animal and possibly …

Long-Term Ecological Research And Experimental Demonstration Provide Theoretical And Technical Support For Adaptive Management Of Alpine Grassland, Cao Guangmin, Lin Li, Zhang Fawei, Li Yikang, Du Yangong, Guo Xiaowei, Li Qian, Qian Dawen, Fan Bo Oct 2018

Long-Term Ecological Research And Experimental Demonstration Provide Theoretical And Technical Support For Adaptive Management Of Alpine Grassland, Cao Guangmin, Lin Li, Zhang Fawei, Li Yikang, Du Yangong, Guo Xiaowei, Li Qian, Qian Dawen, Fan Bo

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The traditional theory holds that the extreme climatic environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has created the potential for regional ecosystem sensitivity and vulnerability making it a worldwide problem of ecosystem management, maintenance, and restoration. Haibei Research Station of Alpine Meadow Ecosystem was established by the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Long-term monitoring of ecosystem component revealed the biological mechanism of alpine grassland response to climate change in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, explored the succession process of alpine grassland degradation under grazing disturbance, and clarified the biological mechanism of maintaining alpine grassland stability. The adaptive management …

A Cohort-Based Program To Help Students Prepare A Conference Research Presentation, Alanna Lecher Oct 2018

A Cohort-Based Program To Help Students Prepare A Conference Research Presentation, Alanna Lecher

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

Students move through many first time experiences when navigating their undergraduate and graduate education. Such experiences include the first time students submit an article to a peer-reviewed scientific journal, attend a conference, and conduct fieldwork. The cohort model has been shown to be effective in increasing success in undergraduate education, and it can be adapted to helping students succeed in these novel experiences as well. This presentation will explore one program where the cohort model was implemented to aid undergraduate students preparing their first conference presentation on a scientific research project. Program structure and implementation will be described.
