What Makes Killing For Organs Wrong? A Philosophical Defense Of The ‘Dead Donor’ Rule, Adam Omelianchuk Jan 2018

What Makes Killing For Organs Wrong? A Philosophical Defense Of The ‘Dead Donor’ Rule, Adam Omelianchuk

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of my dissertation is to give a philosophic defense of the so-called “dead donor” rule (DDR) in transplant ethics, something that is sorely lacking in the current literature on the topic. Part of my project is concerned with the rule’s correct formulation: What exactly does it forbid? I answer that it is primarily concerned with prohibiting the killing of the donor for his or her organs, and that it need not be concerned with requiring that the donor be dead before surgery begins (as important as that might be). What is morally important is that surgery not be …

The Effect Of A Compassion Fatigue Awareness And Self-Care Skills Educational Program On Retention Among Certified Nursing Assistants Working In A Veterans Nursing Home, Michele M. Dreher Jan 2018

The Effect Of A Compassion Fatigue Awareness And Self-Care Skills Educational Program On Retention Among Certified Nursing Assistants Working In A Veterans Nursing Home, Michele M. Dreher

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Compassion fatigue is defined as the emotional and physical exhaustion that can affect helping professionals and caregivers over time. Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are at high-risk for compassion fatigue due to their daily exposure to those who are suffering from a myriad of chronic medical and behavioral illnesses along with repeated workplace stressors. If not addressed early, compassion fatigue can adversely impact a CNA’s wellbeing and quality of resident care. Compassion fatigue is associated with high absenteeism, high turnover, and low retention rates. Despite these challenges, there is no published research on the effects of a workplace compassion …

Exploring Alternative Therapeutic Interventions For The Treatment Of Leigh Syndrome, Stephanie Martin Jan 2018

Exploring Alternative Therapeutic Interventions For The Treatment Of Leigh Syndrome, Stephanie Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Leigh syndrome is the most common mitochondrial disease, affecting 1:40,000 live births. It manifests with symptoms including ataxia, cognitive impairment, motor difficulties, and stroke. Leigh syndrome is a genetic condition caused by mutations in either the nuclear DNA or mitochondrial DNA that affects the assembly of the electron transport chains. Death typically occurs around 2-3 years of age, due to respiratory failure, as the body cannot produce sufficient ATP for survival. The genetic basis of Leigh syndrome means that there is no cure, and current treatments of the symptoms have proven ineffective. This thesis proposes two different therapeutic approaches for …

Association Of Objective Measures Of Sleep And Inflammation Markers On Police Officers: A Cross-Sectional Analysis, Megan R. Buss Jan 2018

Association Of Objective Measures Of Sleep And Inflammation Markers On Police Officers: A Cross-Sectional Analysis, Megan R. Buss

Theses and Dissertations

Police officers are a unique occupational group due to the fact that they have more health problems than many other occupations. These health problems could be a result of elevated inflammation markers caused by poor sleep. Sleep influences circadian rhythms, which thereby influences the function of the immune system. The immune system is responsible for the body’s inflammatory response using pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, CRP, Fibrinogen, and TNF-a. These cytokines can become elevated if disruption of the sleep cycle occurs. Elevated levels of inflammatory markers are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Police officers also work shifts and …

Teaching Musically: Incorporating Dalcroze Pedagogy Into Flute Instruction For The Elementary-Age Student, Emily M. Stumpf Jan 2018

Teaching Musically: Incorporating Dalcroze Pedagogy Into Flute Instruction For The Elementary-Age Student, Emily M. Stumpf

Theses and Dissertations

The current practice of flute pedagogy for the elementary-age student is often focused on skill-building: finger technique, tone development, and note-reading and rhythm skills. Often the teacher will delve into concepts of musicianship only after the student develops a high level of technical skill. I have found it is possible to include musical concepts such as expressive playing, developing an internal sense of rhythm, and improvisation at all stages of the learning process. When the flute teacher functions as the initiator of an aesthetic experience, the development of musicianship becomes just as important as skill-building.

The Dalcroze philosophy of music …

Effect Of Environmental Factors On The Aggregation Behavior Of Silver Nanoparticles In The Aquatic Environment, Kamelia Afshinnia Jan 2018

Effect Of Environmental Factors On The Aggregation Behavior Of Silver Nanoparticles In The Aquatic Environment, Kamelia Afshinnia

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the environmental factors that affect the fate and effects of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in the environment is crucial for NP risk assessment. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) readily transform in the environment, which alters their properties and subsequently their transport, fate, and toxicity. The overall aim of this dissertation was to evaluate the effects of Ag NPs physicochemical properties (e.g., size, surface charge, surface coating) and water chemistry (e.g., buffer concentration, organic ligands, natural organic matter) in controlling Ag NPs colloidal stability. This aim was achieved by systematically 1) review and rationalize many studies that investigated the aggregation kinetics of …

Enhance Flow Boiling In Microchannels By Regulating Two-Phase Transport Patterns, Wenming Li Jan 2018

Enhance Flow Boiling In Microchannels By Regulating Two-Phase Transport Patterns, Wenming Li

Theses and Dissertations

Flow boiling in microchannels is one of the most promising cooling techniques for microelectronics. Using latent heat by vaporization can significantly improve heat dissipation of high power density electronic devices. Most of the failure of electronic devices is induced by the occurrence of critical heat flux (CHF), which defines the maximum operating conditions. However, the vigorous rapid generation of vapor through phase change leads to chaotic two-phase flows in microchannels, resulting in flowinstability in terms of severe flow, temperature and pressure drop fluctuations. Particularly, the very well-known bubble confinement exacerbates the two-phase flow instabilities and greatly deteriorates heat transfer performance …

Probing Solvent Effects In Aromatic Interactions Using Molecular Balances, Josef M. Maier Jan 2018

Probing Solvent Effects In Aromatic Interactions Using Molecular Balances, Josef M. Maier

Theses and Dissertations

Aromatic interactions play a key role in many important processes, such as the formation and stability of biological and synthetic assemblies, facilitation of molecular recognition processes, and catalysis of chemical reactions. One of the key factors determining the strength of aromatic interaction is the solvent environment. Therefore, developing model systems that can accurately measure the influence or effects of solvents on non-polar interaction strengths is a task of great importance. Over the years, we have been approaching this challenge via designing and analyzing molecular devices that can quantitatively report aromatic interaction energies under various solvent and chemical environments. With this …

Assessing The Strengths And Difficulties Of Typically Developing Siblings Of Persons Born With Lifelong Disabilities, Joseph Joseph Wofford

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, strengths and difficulties of siblings of persons born with disabilities were quantitatively assessed, based on parental perception, in comparison to national norms. Answers of 148 parents to the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ; Goodman, 1997; Youthinmind, n.d.a.) for children four to seven years old who are siblings of persons born with lifelong disabilities (SPBDs) were gathered and analyzed. The causal-comparative design compared each subscale of the SDQ for SBPDs against their respective norms in the USA for females or males. SPBDs were found to have no statistically significant difference from the norm group on emotional problems, and …

Mechanisms Of Decarboxylation In The Cyp152 Family Of Cytochrome P450s, José Armando Amaya Jan 2018

Mechanisms Of Decarboxylation In The Cyp152 Family Of Cytochrome P450s, José Armando Amaya

Theses and Dissertations

Intense interest has focused on the development of enzymes as next-generation catalysts for the production of molecules with biotechnological potential. OleTJE, a member of the cytochrome P450 CYP152 family is an excellent candidate for the generation of advanced biofuels. OleTJE catalyzes the hydrogen peroxide-dependent decarboxylation of Cn fatty acids to produce Cn-1 terminal alkenes. Despite the ability of this enzyme to yield long chain alkenes with nearly exclusive chemoselectivity, its reactivity towards shorter chain length substrates results in undesired levels of hydroxylated side-products, limiting its industrial potential. Previous transient kinetic studies have demonstrated that, despite its unusual chemistry, the reaction …

Effect Of Resveratrol On The Development Of Eczema, Christopher Carlucci Jan 2018

Effect Of Resveratrol On The Development Of Eczema, Christopher Carlucci

Theses and Dissertations

Atopic dermatitis is a type of eczema characterized by chronic inflammation of the skin, affecting millions of people worldwide. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring stilbenoid, is widely believed to exhibit beneficial effects on a host of chronic diseases. Although some previous studies have aimed to evaluate the effects of resveratrol on the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, this relationship remains ill-defined. We have previously established that mast cell activation, remodeling, and cellular infiltration in the hypodermis all begin prior to the IgE-mediated immune response in an atopic dermatitis mouse model, and that this early pathogenesis is directly related to an increase in …

Organic Acids And Amino Acids In Serpentinization Related Fluids From The Atlantis Massif, Nicholas Camper Jan 2018

Organic Acids And Amino Acids In Serpentinization Related Fluids From The Atlantis Massif, Nicholas Camper

Theses and Dissertations

Serpentinization is a low temperature, low pressure process that occurs when water reacts with ultramafic rocks. Fluids that have interacted with serpentinites have elevated concentrations of hydrogen and reduced carbon species that can fuel chemolithoautotrophy. International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 357 drilled a series of boreholes into the Atlantis Massif with the goal of investigating how serpentinization impacts carbon cycling and sustains life in the subseafloor. Bottom water samples (CTD), fluids flushed from the boreholes during drilling (Rock Drill), and fluids that were trapped in the liners of the cores (Liner fluids) were collected. The changes and distributions of organic …

Linking Physiology, Temperature, And Recruitment: A Classic Competitive Story Rewritten By Climate, Maeve Kerrigan Snyder Jan 2018

Linking Physiology, Temperature, And Recruitment: A Classic Competitive Story Rewritten By Climate, Maeve Kerrigan Snyder

Theses and Dissertations

Climatic changes have the potential to alter population and community dynamics, ultimately influencing the biogeographic distributions of species. For many organisms, reproduction is physiologically tied to temperature. We tested the hypothesis that a physiological mechanism for reproductive failure in the acorn barnacle, Semibalanus balanoides, would result in predictable patterns of larval recruitment over broad geographic scales. Recruitment density was predicted to be dependent on the duration of permissive temperatures (< 10oC). for successful reproduction in adult populations of S. balanoides. We found that temperature was a reliable predictive variable for recruitment densities throughout our study region. Post-recruitment processes were also considered, specifically the competition between Semibalanus balanoides and Chthamalus montagui, described in Joseph Connell’s 1961 experiment. The competitive hierarchy outlined in this experiment is not consistently observed throughout the range overlap of the two species. Growth and mortality were found to differ dependent on species and latitude, indicating that climate mediates this classic ecological system. Our results provide useful knowledge for refining models of biogeographic shifts. A consistent failure of larval supply and a breakdown of competitive advantage could accelerate the pace of predicted range contraction for S. balanoides. Further investigation of how environmental variables interact with physiology and ecological processes is necessary for accurate predictions of climate change effects

Integrating Self-Determination And Expectancy-Value Theories In Examining The Achievement Of First-Generation College Students: A Latent Profile Analysis Examining Relations Between Perceived Choice, School Valuing, And Perceived Competence And Academic Achievement, Angela Starrett Jan 2018

Integrating Self-Determination And Expectancy-Value Theories In Examining The Achievement Of First-Generation College Students: A Latent Profile Analysis Examining Relations Between Perceived Choice, School Valuing, And Perceived Competence And Academic Achievement, Angela Starrett

Theses and Dissertations

First-generation students, who represent more than 40% of entering college freshmen, have lower academic achievement and struggle to persist compared to their continuing-generation peers. Although previous studies have repeatedly shown a deficit model for first-generation students, there is still a lack of clear understanding about the heterogeneity that exists among these college students. While some do struggle to persist, others show marked resilience. Thus, drawing on Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, this short-term longitudinal study examined whether perceived competence, perceived choice, and positive school value could moderate the risk of being a first-generation college student. A latent profile analysis on …

Study Of 4h-Sic And Alxga1-Xn Based Heterojunction Devices For Ultraviolet Detection Applications, Venkata Surya Naga Raju Chava

Theses and Dissertations

Ultraviolet (UV) detectors are important for their applications in flame detection, furnace gas control systems, plume monitoring etc. Due to their wide band-gap, 4H-SiC (Eg=3.26eV) and III-V semiconductors such as GaN (Eg=3.4eV), AlxGa1-xN (Eg=3.4eV to 6.2eV) etc., are excellent candidates for visible(cut-0ff=400nm) and solar blind(cut-0ff=290nm) UV detectors. Conventional SiC UV detectors suffer from poor UV responsivities due to reflection/absorption/transmission losses caused by the metal electrodes used in those detectors.

In the first part, a novel bipolar transistor with epitaxial graphene(EG)/p-SiC (30μm)/n+-SiC substrate was fabricated and characterized. The 2-3 ML thick, transparent and conducting, EG used in this work was grown …

Effect Modification By Stroke To The Relationship Between Tooth Loss And Cognitive Decline, Amanda Collins Jan 2018

Effect Modification By Stroke To The Relationship Between Tooth Loss And Cognitive Decline, Amanda Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Background: A decline in cognitive functioning is one of the greatest burdens that older adults face. Studies indicate that periodontal disease is positively associated with cognitive decline. The link between stroke and cognitive decline is well-established, and literature supports that tooth loss and stroke are associated as well, but the role that stroke plays in the relationship between tooth loss and decline in cognitive functioning is, as of yet, unclear. This study uses data from the REGARDS cohort to examine the effect of stroke on the relationship between periodontal disease and cognitive function.

Methods: The REGARDS cohort is comprised of …

Understanding The Adsorption And Nucleation Of Transition Metals On A Model Carbon Support, Grant S. Seuser Jan 2018

Understanding The Adsorption And Nucleation Of Transition Metals On A Model Carbon Support, Grant S. Seuser

Theses and Dissertations

Heterogeneous catalysis plays a vital role in the commercial production of chemicals. However, much is still unknown about the fundamental surface chemistry involved in catalyst preparation and the surface chemistry of the catalysts themselves. In the first part of this work, a surface science approach was employed to develop a fundamental understanding of the surface chemistry of strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) of metal precursors on a model carbon support, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). SEA is a wet impregnation method in which anionic/cationic metal precursors are adsorbed onto positively/negatively charged functional groups by adjusting the pH of the solution above …

One of the emerging trends in education is gamification, a concept that has been applied in other fields, such as business and advertising, with great success. Gamification can be defined as adding game elements to non-game constructs. This study followed a high-school Algebra II teacher and 10 of her students in an attempt to document the effects of gamification on student academic engagement. Multiple methods of data collection were used to gather data from students and teachers. After analysis, the data showed that gamification had a positive effect on student academic engagement. The results were used to create an action …

Restoration Of Visual Performance And Opsin Expression Within The Retina During Eye Regeneration In The Florida Fighting Conch (Strombus Alatus), Jamie M. Clark Jan 2018

Restoration Of Visual Performance And Opsin Expression Within The Retina During Eye Regeneration In The Florida Fighting Conch (Strombus Alatus), Jamie M. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Conch are slow-moving, herbivorous, marine gastropods that possess prominent camera-type eyes at the ends of long, flexible stalks. Compared to the eyes of other gastropods, those of conch are large (up to 1.5 mm in diameter) and have sophisticated optics that include a lens with a graded refractive index. Conch also have a remarkable ability to regenerate eye tissue: after an eye is lost, a new eye will develop to take its place within weeks. Eye regeneration in conch appears to occur rapidly compared to eye regeneration in other gastropods. Despite our knowledge of the complexity and regenerative abilities of …

The Impact Of A Peer-Teaching Instructional Approach On A Student’S Self-Confidence, John Corral Jan 2018

The Impact Of A Peer-Teaching Instructional Approach On A Student’S Self-Confidence, John Corral

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines a problem of practice stemming from students not given the same opportunities to use and develop self-confidence and take on higher levels of responsibility in the classroom as they prepare for the 21st century workforce in our society. Recognizing a problem of practice evident in our high school with low-selfesteem in students, this paper studies the effects of implementing a peer-teaching instructional approach to help develop students’ self-confidence and emerging leadership skills (Lockie & Van Lanen, 2008). The central research question addressed in this study is: what is the impact of implementing a peer-teaching instructional approach on …

Changes Of Dispersal Ability In An Isolated Population, Connor Bacon Jan 2018

Changes Of Dispersal Ability In An Isolated Population, Connor Bacon

Theses and Dissertations

Dispersal is a core mechanism in the maintenance of metapopulations. It maintains genetic diversity by connecting subpopulations and generates new populations to replace those that die out. However, as populations become more isolated, as occurs in habitat fragmentation, dispersal becomes more difficult. This should lead to selective pressure against dispersive individuals, causing a reduction in dispersal traits. Over time, this can lead to variation in dispersal traits among populations. We examine this idea using an extreme case of isolation in Euphydryas gillettii, a population that has remained completely isolated for forty years. By comparing this population to a baseline established …

Semiparametric Regression In The Presence Of Measurement Error, Xiang Li Jan 2018

Semiparametric Regression In The Presence Of Measurement Error, Xiang Li

Theses and Dissertations

The error-in-covariates problem has received great attention among researchers who study semiparametric and nonparametric inference for regression models over the past two decades. Without correcting for the measurement error in covariates, estimators for covariate effect usually contain bias. To account for measurement error, much research have been done in mean regression (Liang et al., 1999; Fuller, 2009; Carroll et al., 2006) and quantile regression (He and Liang, 2000; Hardle et al., 2000; Wei and Carroll, 2009). In contrast, there is little research in mode regression and this motivates us to propose semiparametric methods to address this error-incovariates problem in Chapters …

Sex Differences In Predicting Nicotine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization From Habituation To Novelty And Initial Drug Response, Jessica Illenberger Jan 2018

Sex Differences In Predicting Nicotine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization From Habituation To Novelty And Initial Drug Response, Jessica Illenberger

Theses and Dissertations

Administration of nicotine evokes an immense mesolimbic dopamine response that progressively increases, or sensitizes, with repeated drug exposure and can be monitored indirectly through rodent’s motor activity. Sex differences in observed rates of behavioral sensitization in rodents appear to be consistent with epidemiological reports of smoking in humans, which indicate that females are more sensitive to the repeated effects of nicotine. Sex differences in sensitization to nicotine may explain why females progress towards addiction faster than males and so in order to effectively treat and prevent nicotine use in vulnerable populations, it is necessary to identify other factors that can …

Screening Of Novel Active Salicylic Acid Analogs And Identification Of A Bacterial Effector Targeting Key Proteins Involved In Salicylic Acid-Mediated Defense, Ian Palmer Jan 2018

Screening Of Novel Active Salicylic Acid Analogs And Identification Of A Bacterial Effector Targeting Key Proteins Involved In Salicylic Acid-Mediated Defense, Ian Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The master regulator of salicylic acid (SA)-mediated plant defense, NPR1 (NONEXPRESSER OF PR GENES 1), and its paralogs NPR3 and NPR4 act as SA receptors. After the perception of a pathogen, plant cells produce SA in the chloroplast. In the presence of SA, NPR1 protein is reduced from oligomers to monomers, and translocated into the nucleus. There, NPR1 binds to TGA and WRKY transcription factors to induce expression of plant defense genes. EDS1 and PBS3 are two key proteins involved in SA biosynthesis. Previous research has shown that several plant pathogens produce SA hydroxylases. These pathogen-produced hydroxylases act to degrade …

Machine learning and deep learning methods have been increasingly applied to solve challenging and important bioinformatics problems such as protein structure prediction, disease gene identification, and drug discovery. However, the performances of existing machine learning based predictive models are still not satisfactory. The question of how to exploit the specific properties of bioinformatics data and couple them with the unique capabilities of the learning algorithms remains elusive. In this dissertation, we propose advanced machine learning and deep learning algorithms to address two important problems: mislocation-related cancer gene identification and major histocompatibility complex-peptide binding affinity prediction. Our first contribution proposes a …

Phylogeny, Ancestral Genome, And Disease Diagnoses Models Constructions Using Biological Data, Bing Feng Jan 2018

Phylogeny, Ancestral Genome, And Disease Diagnoses Models Constructions Using Biological Data, Bing Feng

Theses and Dissertations

Studies of bioinformatics develop methods and software tools to analyze the biological data and provide insight of the mechanisms of biological process. Machine learning techniques have been widely used by researchers for disease prediction, disease diagnosis, and bio-marker identification. Using machine-learning algorithms to diagnose diseases has a couple of advantages. Besides solely relying on the doctors’ experiences and stereotyped formulas, researchers could use learning algorithms to analyze sophisticated, high-dimensional and multimodal biomedical data, and construct prediction/classification models to make decisions even when some information was incomplete, unknown, or contradictory. In this study, first of all, we built an automated computational …
