Mechanisms For The Spread Of Antibiotic Resistance In Tuberculosis, Julie Allison Spencer Nov 2018

Mechanisms For The Spread Of Antibiotic Resistance In Tuberculosis, Julie Allison Spencer

Shared Knowledge Conference

Tuberculosis (TB) is currently the ninth leading cause of death for humans worldwide, causing 10.4 million new infections in 2016. According to the World Health Organization, of these infections, 600,000 were antibiotic resistant. However, the treatment success rate for resistant TB was only 54%. The potential for emergent epidemics of drug resistant TB highlights the need to understand the mechanisms for the spread of resistance. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB, evolves resistant strains within individuals who are being treated with antibiotics. It has been assumed previously that the resistant characteristics of these strains are spread primarily by the …

Improving The Palatability Of Colonoscopy Preparations, Phuong Anh Hoang Nguyen, Sarah Mounho, Darnell Cuylear, Heather Canavan

Shared Knowledge Conference

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The most reliable screening method of CRC is a colonoscopy which requires a 4-Liter polymer with electrolytes preparation. Two in five patients are non-compliant to their colonoscopy schedules, with many patients who abstain reporting refusal due to significant discomfort associated with this preparation. Furthermore, there are distinct gender differences in the tolerance of colonoscopy preparations in male and female populations. We hypothesize the differences in clinic are a result of toxic effects of the drug associated with poor mixing by individual patients. PEG, the drug, …

The Mathematics Modelling and Tools (MMT) e-learning system is a platform used for supporting lectures and tutoring at the Vienna University and Technology. Additionally to traditional e-learning properties like up- and download of lecture notes, videos and slides the MMT system provides the surface for a virtual modelling and simulation laboratory. Very powerful calculation software like MATLAB, Java or Octave, running in behind, allows experimenting with targeted modelling and simulation examples prepared and developed by experts. These are first of all used to support the presentation directly at the lecture and can afterwards be accessed by students given a password …

A Container Reshaped By Its Contents: The Boyndaries Of Language In Craig Thompson's "Habibi", Rebeccah Griffith Nov 2018

A Container Reshaped By Its Contents: The Boyndaries Of Language In Craig Thompson's "Habibi", Rebeccah Griffith

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Craig Thompson’s graphic novel “Habibi” is an intricate tracing of the lines that shape and separate religion, sexuality, language, possession, and storytelling, both from one another and within their own orders. The main vein of the story runs through the depiction of the physical body as a linguistically translatable unit, and conversely, language as a corporeal entity that operates in the same complex manner as a physical being. This accurately depicts the relationship between language and the physical world outside of stories as well. The storyline is largely based on themes of possession, sexuality and the intermingling of the twoZ …

The Prospect And Progress Of Rockwell Kent On Monhegan Island, Codi Lamb, Rhonda Reymond Nov 2018

The Prospect And Progress Of Rockwell Kent On Monhegan Island, Codi Lamb, Rhonda Reymond

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

This capstone examines the artistic and personal impact Monhegan Island, Maine had on the artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971). This is accomplished by evaluating what qualities Monhegan Island has that makes it an attractive location for an artist colony. Afterwards, focus will be directed towards Kent; specifically, a selection of landscape paintings from his residency on Monhegan Island (1905-1910; 1917; and 1947-1953), will be analyzed chronologically. They will be evaluated using Jay Appleton’s prospect – refuge theory commenting on humans’ interactions with particular environments. These analyses are then compared to personal events that occurred at the time the artwork in question …

L-Serine Reduces Reactive Oxygen Species Yield In Cisplatin Treated Zebrafish Utricles, Satya A. Moolani, Elvin Irihamye, Jerry D. Monroe, Michael E. Smith Nov 2018

L-Serine Reduces Reactive Oxygen Species Yield In Cisplatin Treated Zebrafish Utricles, Satya A. Moolani, Elvin Irihamye, Jerry D. Monroe, Michael E. Smith

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Cisplatin is a chemotherapy compound effective against a variety of cancers. However, it can act as an ototoxin and cause hearing loss by promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in auditory tissues. The antioxidant amino acid, L-serine has been hypothesized to lower levels of cisplatin-mediated ROS. In this project, we investigated whether L-serine can reduce cisplatin-mediated ROS production in auditory tissue and potentially act as an otoprotectant during cisplatin chemotherapy. We used a zebrafish utricular tissue culture system and fluorescent ROS indicator dye to spectrophotometrically measure if L-serine could decrease reactive oxygen species levels in cisplatin-treated tissues. We found that …

Histone Deacetylation Is The Primary Epigenetic Mechanism For Silencing Of Tumor Suppressor Gene - Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor-2 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells, Alisha Deshmukh, Shirish Barve Nov 2018

Histone Deacetylation Is The Primary Epigenetic Mechanism For Silencing Of Tumor Suppressor Gene - Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor-2 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells, Alisha Deshmukh, Shirish Barve

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer related mortality worldwide. With a survival rate of less than 5 percent, a therapeutic treatment is desperately needed to manage this disease. Many epigenetic mechanisms that underlay HCC are being identified. A frequently silenced pathway tissue factor pathway inhibitor-2 (TFPI-2) is a critical tumor suppressor gene. In HCC, inactivation of TFPI-2 leads to tumor growth. Recent research indicated Fas L plays a major role in apoptosis as part of HCC. For the purposes of this study, the phytochemical Curcumin was explored to observe its possible effects on the epigenetic mechanisms …

Economics Of Milk Yield Losses In One Dairy Farm In Macedonia Associated With Clinical Mastitis, Fetai Valdrina, Nakov Dimitar, Jashari Besirm, Trajchev Metodija

International Journal of Business and Technology

Mastitis remains one of the major disease in dairy herds, causing profound economic losses to the entire milk production chain due to changes in the milk quality and milk yield. A one year cross-sectional longitudinal survey was carried out to evaluate milk yield losses associated with occurrence of clinical mastitis cases in one dairy herd. Cows that had clinical mastitis and clinically healthy cows during lactation were included in the study. The traits analyzed were the average of the monthly test day milk yields, cow parities and days in lactation while first case of clinical mastitis was occurred. For these …

Mechanisms Of Physiological Amyloidogenesis, Miling Wang Nov 2018

Mechanisms Of Physiological Amyloidogenesis, Miling Wang

Open Access Dissertations

Phase transitions of matter between gas, condensed liquid and solid states are ubiquitous in the physical world. Recent discoveries have shown that a dynamic continuum of material states also exists within the cellular environment. Whereas examples of mobile, liquid-like droplets are found throughout the cell, such as nucleoli and stress granules, examples of immobile, solid-like amyloid structures have largely been associated with pathological aggregates, and are considered the result of an aberrant liquid-to-solid phase transition. Here, we demonstrate stress-induced low complexity RNA activate a physiological liquid-to-solid phase transition to form solid-like Amyloid bodies (A-bodies). A-bodies are membrane-less compartments that can …

Superior Detection Of Faces In Male Infants At 2 Months, Sarah E. Maylott Nov 2018

Superior Detection Of Faces In Male Infants At 2 Months, Sarah E. Maylott

Open Access Theses

Face detection is a foundational ability, guiding infants’ attention to relevant social information. However, little is known about face detection in the first months of life. Using eye-tracking, we measured 2-month-olds’ (N=72) social orienting to human faces, compared to animal faces and objects, presented within complex, 4-item arrays. Males looked faster and longer to human faces than females. Further, males, but not females, looked faster and longer to human faces compared to other images. This is the first study to report a male-advantage in face detection. While the causes and consequences remain to be determined, our findings suggest that attention …

Connecting The Dots: Network Analysis For Examining Psychosocial Syndemic Conditions Among High-Risk Hiv-Negative Men Who Have Sex With Men, Jasper S. Lee Nov 2018

Connecting The Dots: Network Analysis For Examining Psychosocial Syndemic Conditions Among High-Risk Hiv-Negative Men Who Have Sex With Men, Jasper S. Lee

Open Access Theses

Introduction: In the U.S., HIV acquisition risk is highest among men who have sex with men (MSM). Syndemics, psychosocial problems that interact with each other and poor health behavior, are additively associated with increased condomless anal sex, HIV incidence, and HIV prevalence among MSM. However, information about how these syndemics interrelate with each other is under-explored. Methods: To examine the associations between nine syndemics in 194 MSM at high risk of HIV acquisition, we examined bivariate polychoric correlations, and then compared exploratory factor analyses (EFA) to a network analysis. Syndemics were assessed by self-report measures. Network analyses (presented graphically) consist …

Phenotypes are used for a multitude of purposes such as defining species, reconstructing phylogenies, diagnosing diseases or improving crop and animal productivity, but most of this phenotypic data is published in free-text narratives that are not computable. This means that the complex relationship between the genome, the environment and phenotypes is largely inaccessible to analysis and important questions related to the evolution of organisms, their diseases or their response to climate change cannot be fully addressed. It takes great effort to manually convert free-text narratives to a computable format before they can be used in large-scale analyses. We argue that …

Molecular Structure Of Promoter-Bound Yeast Tfiid., Olga Kolesnikova, Adam Ben-Shem, Jie Luo, Jeff Ranish, Patrick Schultz, Gabor Papai

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Transcription preinitiation complex assembly on the promoters of protein encoding genes is nucleated in vivo by TFIID composed of the TATA-box Binding Protein (TBP) and 13 TBP-associate factors (Tafs) providing regulatory and chromatin binding functions. Here we present the cryo-electron microscopy structure of promoter-bound yeast TFIID at a resolution better than 5 Å, except for a flexible domain. We position the crystal structures of several subunits and, in combination with cross-linking studies, describe the quaternary organization of TFIID. The compact tri lobed architecture is stabilized by a topologically closed Taf5-Taf6 tetramer. We confirm the unique subunit stoichiometry prevailing in TFIID …

Water-Soluble Cranberry Extract Inhibits Vibrio Cholerae Biofilm Formation Possibly Through Modulating The Second Messenger 3’, 5’ - Cyclic Diguanylate Level, Daniel B. Pederson, Yuqing Dong, Levi B. Blue, Sara V. Smith, Min Cao

Publications

Quorum sensing (QS) and nucleotide-based second messengers are vital signaling systems that regulate bacterial physiology in response to changing environments. Disrupting bacterial signal transduction is a promising direction to combat infectious diseases, and QS and the second messengers are undoubtedly potential targets. In Vibrio cholerae, both QS and the second messenger 3’, 5’—cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) play a central role in controlling motility, motile-to-sessile life transition, and virulence. In this study, we found that water-soluble extract from the North American cranberry could significantly inhibit V. cholerae biofilm formation during the development/maturation stage by reducing the biofilm matrix production and …

Interest in bees has grown dramatically in recent years in light of several studies that have reported widespread declines in bees and other pollinators. Investigating declines in wild bees can be difficult, however, due to the lack of faunal surveys that provide baseline data of bee richness and diversity. Protected lands such as national monuments and national parks can provide unique opportunities to learn about and monitor bee populations dynamics in a natural setting because the opportunity for large-scale changes to the landscape are reduced compared to unprotected lands. Here we report on a 4-year study of bees in Grand …

Validation Of A New Concept For Measuring Respirable Dusts, Xiao Liu Nov 2018

Validation Of A New Concept For Measuring Respirable Dusts, Xiao Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sampling of airborne dust in industry is influenced by the potential health effects associated with human exposure. Health effects depend on mass concentration and particle size which influences the site of pulmonary deposition. Occupational diseases tend to be associated with dust deposition in specific regions of the respiratory tract. The ACGIH size selective TLVs are expressed in three forms: Inhalable Particulate Matter, Thoracic Particulate Matter, and Respirable Particulate Matter. In pneuomoconioses, the amount of dust deposited in the lungs can be estimated by sampling the respirable fraction. Dose-response relationships are derived by relating the health experience of workers to the …
