Endocrine And Hematobiochemical Profile Of Lambs Raised In A Semiaridregion With Different Growth Potentials During The Postweaning Period, Shiva Pratap Singh, Gopal Dass, Ramachandran Natesan, Yogender Kushwah, Nandini Sharma, Ashok Kumar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted for establishment of the relationship of blood variables with growth rate of postweaned lambs. Eight lambs each of fast growth (FG; 11.6 ± 0.5 kg live wt. at weaning) and slow growth (SG; 7.7 ± 0.5 kg live wt. at weaning) were monitored fortnightly for endocrine and hematobiochemical variables along with parasitic load and growth performance. Recording of body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) was performed monthly from birth to 180 days. Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher while thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in FG lambs compared to SG lambs. Blood cell counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in FG lambs compared to SG lambs. Except for the birth wt., the BW and ADG of FG lambs were significantly (P < 0.05) higher at all time points. Liver enzymes (alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase) and triglyceride were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in SG lambs compared to FG lambs. These findings indicate a significant influence of growth rate on peripheral concentrations of endocrine and some hematobiochemical variables in lambs. These selected variables can be used for early identification and culling of slow-growing lambs for better economic return to lamb producers.

A Case Report Of Apatemon Gracilis (Szidat, 1928) Infectionin Domestic Geese In Mainland China, Dandan Liu, Zhennan Zhuo, Jianping Tao, Jinjun Xu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This is the first report of the diagnosis and treatment of Apatemon gracilis infection in domestic geese in mainland China confirmed at the molecular level. The mortality of geese reached 10% (150/1500). Necropsy examinations confirmed hemorrhagic inflammation of the small intestine and blood and catarrhal mucus in the enteric cavity. A large number of flukes were found in the first third of the small intestine, with one end buried in the intestinal mucosa, forming lesions at the absorption sites. The ITS-1 sequence of the parasites was amplified by polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis confirmed that the isolated worms were …

Erythromycin (8.8 mg/kg), metoclopramide (0.2 mg/kg), and saline (2 mL) were administered as single dose IM before surgery in the ERT, MET, and CNTR groups, respectively. Lidocaine was administered to the LID group, both as a bolus before (1.3 mg/kg IV) and …

The aim of this study was to compare the growth pattern of seven strains of Japanese quail including Wild, Italian Speckled, Tuxedo, Scarlett, English white, White button, and A&M Texas by nonlinear growth functions including Gompertz, Richards, logistic, Lopez, and Weibull functions. The body weights of the unselected randomly bred populations of these strains were measured weekly from 1 to 42 days of age and then used to fit functions. The fitness of each function was assessed by statistics including the mean square error, Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, and adjusted coefficient of determination. The results showed that Gompertz …

The M. haemolytica-specific PHSSA and Rpt2 genes, and the P. multocidaspecific KMT1 and the Omp87 genes were amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A housekeeping gene targeting the sheep cellular mitochondrial 12S ribosomal DNA was used as an internal control. PCR reactions were optimized using the positive and negative controls. Gene-specific PCR …

Background/aim: In this study, the e ects of resveratrol as a natural polyphenol compound, gemcitabine as an antimetabolite that has nucleoside structure analogous to deoxycytidine, and para-aminophenol-derived paracetamol were investigated with single and combined applications in monolayers of the MDAH-2774 human ovarian cancer cell line. Materials and methods: Drugs were evaluated in cell culture with respect to cell proliferation, cell cytotoxicity (trypan blue dye exclusion test), synthesis phase of cell cycle, and cell structure in 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. Result: Resveratrol and gemcitabine diminished both cell proliferation and cell cycle synthesis phase indication in monolayer cell cultures (P < 0.05). All combination groups showed similar e ects that were mainly more e ective in respect to single usage of resveratrol and gemcitabine in monolayer cell cultures. Conclusion: The effects of gemcitabine, resveratrol, and paracetamol were investigated in monolayers of the MDAH-2774 human ovarian cancer cell line and a decrease in cell number in cell cycle synthesis phase, prevention of cell proliferation, and destruction of cell structure were observed.

Background/aim: Spontaneous wheals and/or angioedema lasting longer than six weeks are described as chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Omalizumab is used for the treatment of antihistamine-resistant CSU. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet- lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) are considered important indicators of inflammation and platelet activation in chronic diseases. We aimed to determine the NLR, PLR, MPV, and PDW levels in patients with CSU compared with healthy controls. We also aimed to investigate the effects of omalizumab therapy on these parameters in CSU patients. Materials and methods: This hospital-based, retrospective study included 143 patients …

Background/aim: Epileptic seizure leads to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) among affected patients. The causes of SUDEP are still unclear. The aim of this study was to research the effect of epilepsy on myocardial injury and arrhythmias during experimentally induced acute myocardial ischemia. Materials and methods: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: sham, pentylentetrazole (PTZ) + sham, ischemia, and PTZ + ischemia groups. PTZ (65 mg/kg, ip) was given 2 h before ischemia. Seizure scoring was conducted by evaluating the PTZ-induced behavioral changes in the rats. The left main coronary artery was ligated in anesthetized rats for …

Background/aim: Sepsis is an unregulated systemic response to microbial invasion that can lead to multiple organ failure. This study aims at investigating the relationships among myeloperoxidase (MPO) and CD177 in major organ systems including whole blood, liver, and lung tissues in septic rats. Materials and methods: Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in female Wistar rats. Whole blood, liver, and lung samples were obtained from rats of 3 groups (n = 10 for each group, n total = 30: control as a wild-type group, laparotomy group (LAP), and CLP). Gene expression of MPO and CD177 in targeted …
