Brain metastases are the most common malignancy encountered in the central nervous system (CNS), with up to 30-40% of cancer patients developing brain metastases at some point during the course of their disease. The management of brain metastasis is rapidly evolving and the roles of local therapies such as whole-brain radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and resection along with systemic therapies are in flux. An emphasis on the neurocognitive side effects associated with treatment has gained prominence. Novel molecular studies have demonstrated important evolutionary patterns underpinning the development of brain metastasis and leptomeningeal disease, which may be key to unlocking new …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Multi-Auv Adaptive Trajectory Planning For Under-Ice Field Estimation, Chaofeng Wang, Li Wei, Zhaohui Wang, Min Song, Nina Mahmoudian
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
This work studies online learning-based trajectory planning for multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to estimate a water parameter field of interest in the under-ice environment. A centralized system is considered, where several fixed access points on the ice layer are introduced as gateways for communications between the AUVs and a remote data fusion center. We model the water parameter field of interest as a Gaussian process with unknown hyper-parameters. The AUV trajectories for sampling are determined on an epoch-by-epoch basis. At the end of each epoch, the access points relay the observed field samples from all the AUVs to the …

I Am Complicated, And So Is My Blackness: A Trifecta Exploration Of Educational Spaces And Identity Development, Kala Burrell-Craft
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Myriads of research studies have been written over the past 20 years highlighting the racial gap and disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes between Black and White students, but as revealed in a review of the literature, more studies need to be conducted that examine the intersection of race, space/place, and racial identity development. Using critical race theory as a framework, this study comprised of three separate, but related essays that explore the function of educational spaces in which Black Americans navigate, grow, and develop as it intersects with race, space/place, and identity development. Essay one is a critical narrative …

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
Clean air and clean water are the cornerstones of environmental engineering and environmental science. To assure the quality of these matrices, we currently rely upon a broad range of monitoring techniques - many of which are outdated, unreliable, or excessively expensive. Recent advances in both nanotechnology and biotechnology, however, are poised to provide novel and previously unattainable alternatives that have the potential to be more sensitive as well as more cost-effective than many existing methods. In this presentation, we will present work conducted to develop gold enabled plasmonic platforms that facilitate detection of inorganic, organic, biologic, and nanoparticulate contaminants. As …

Stem Roles: How Students’ Ontological Perspectives Facilitate Stem Identities, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin, Monique Ross
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Educational researchers have explored the importance of performance, recognition, and interest in establishing and maintaining a STEM identity. Research has also demonstrated that the ways students describe themselves and how they participate in STEM communities can provide insight into their role identity salience; however, there has been little work to explore the ontological beliefs of students about STEM people and how this influences their ability to see themselves as possessing a STEM identity. This research explores the ontological beliefs of high school students, with specific attention to the ways in which they describe what constitutes a math person, science person, …

Physiology and Disease is a Biology elective at IMSA that has been developed to be mostly student-centered. Some examples of student projects include modeling heart structure to reflect function and creating LED arduino monitors to measure heart rate. Students also measure their lung capacity and blood pressure to demonstrate correlation of these values with heart rate, and trace the correlation back to neuronal controls. Projects such as these integrate other disciplines such as engineering and conform to NGSS Science and Engineering standards and NGSS Cross cutting Concepts standards. Students take responsibility for their own learning and articulate better on tests.

Exploring Other Worlds: A Project In Planetary Science Class, Eric Hawker
Faculty Publications & Research
Planetary science is a highly interdisciplinary field, it often requires knowledge of physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and atmospheric science. In addition much of what we know of planets and moons come from missions that are exemplars of good engineering practices. In order to give my students a very basic understanding of what a planetary scientist does, they do a project that simulates the process of designing, proposing, operating, and analyzing the data from a robotic mission to a planet or moon. In this workshop, participants will work in groups to go through the steps of this project.

An electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)- based method for noninvasive three-dimensional extracellular pH mapping was developed using a pH-sensitive nitroxyl radical as an exogenous paramagnetic probe. Fast projection scanning with a constant magnetic field sweep enabled the acquisition of four-dimensional (3D spatial +1D spectral) EPR images within 7.5 min. Three-dimensional maps of pH were reconstructed by processing the pH-dependent spectral information on the images. To demonstrate the proposed method of pH mapping, the progress of extracellular acidosis in tumor-bearing mouse legs was studied. Furthermore, extracellular pH mapping was used to visualize the spatial distribution of acidification in different tumor xenograft mouse …

Evaluation Of The Epigenetic Regulation Of Two X-Linked, Autism Candidate Genes: X-Linked Lymphocyte Regulated 3b And Transketolase-Like 1, Glenn W. Milton
Doctoral Dissertations
According to the CDC the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in males compared to females is approximately 5:1. Skuse et al. hypothesized that imprinted genes on the X chromosome could account for this sex bias. Genomic imprinting is defined as differential gene expression dependent upon the parental origin of the allele. While genomic imprinting on autosomes has been well classified, no imprinting mechanism on the sex chromosomes has been discovered. This work presents an investigation into the regulation of expression governing the imprinted locus of X-Linked Lymphocyte Regulated 3b/4b/4c (Xlr3/4), and closely linked ASD candidate gene, Transketolase-Like …

Characteristics common to animals living in subterranean environments include the reduction or absence of eyes, lessened pigmentation and enhanced sensory systems. How these characteristics have evolved is poorly understood for the majority of cave dwelling species. In order to understand the evolution of these changes, this study uses an invertebrate model system, the freshwater isopod crustacean, Asellus aquaticus, to examine whether adult differences between cave and surface dwelling individuals first appear during embryonic development. We hypothesized that antennal elaboration, as well as eye reduction and pigment loss, would be apparent during embryonic development. We found that differences in pigmentation, eye …

KIP Articles
Australobius tracheoperspicuus sp. n. (Lithobiomorpha: Lithobiidae) was recently discovered from the Cave of the brickyard of Gaofeng village, in the Guizhou Province, southwest China, and it is described here. Morphologically the new species is similar to A. magnus (Trozina>, 1894) from north-western China. The new species can be easily distinguished from those by the trachea connected to the valve of the TIII clearly visible from the dorsal side, the absence of ocelli on each side of the cephalic plate, the DaC spine being only present on the XIIIth–XVth legs. Numbers of examined specimens, distribution and the main morphological characters …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a major cereal grain widely used for livestock feed, brewing malts and human food. Grain yield is the most important breeding target for genetic improvement and largely depends on optimal timing of flowering. Little is known about the allelic diversity of genes that underlie flowering time in domesticated barley, the genetic changes that have occurred during breeding, and their impact on yield and adaptation. Here, we report a comprehensive genomic assessment of a worldwide collection of 895 barley accessions based on the targeted resequencing of phenology genes. A versatile target-capture method was used to …

Background: The speech-evoked frequency following response (FFR) has shown to be useful in assessing complex auditory processing abilities and in different age groups. While many aspects of FFR have been studied extensively, the effect of timing, as measured by inter-stimulus-interval (ISI), especially in the older adult population, has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of different ISIs on speech evoked FFR in older and younger adults who speak a tonal language, and to investigate whether the older adults’ FFR were more susceptible to the change in ISI. Novel antibiotics are urgently needed. The troponoids [tropones, tropolones, and α-hydroxytropolones (α-HT)] can have anti-bacterial activity. We synthesized or purchased 92 troponoids and evaluated their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Preliminary hits were assessed for minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC80) and cytotoxicity (CC50) against human hepatoma cells. Sixteen troponoids inhibited S. aureus/E. coli/ A. baumannii growth by ≥80% growth at <30 >μM with CC50 values >50 μM. Two selected tropolones (63 and 285) inhibited 18 methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains with similar MIC80 values as against a reference strain. Two selected thiotropolones (284 and 363) …30>

This study examined the factors influencing water-based recreationists' perceptions of support and opposition towards off-shore wind energy development (OWD) on Lake Erie. Much of the proposed or future Lake Erie OWD infrastructure may either be within or adjacent to public lands, waters, and protected areas, raising concerns about the potential environmental and social impacts upon recreation stakeholders. The limited body of OWD research within the United States has suggested there are numerous factors that may influence overall perceptions of support and opposition such as political orientation and beliefs in climate change. Moreover, recent research has proposed that the perceived recreation …

Most of the planet's diversity is concentrated in the tropics, which includes many regions undergoing rapid climate change. Yet, while climate-induced biodiversity changes are widely documented elsewhere, few studies have addressed this issue for lowland tropical ecosystems. Here we investigate whether the floristic and functional composition of intact lowland Amazonian forests have been changing by evaluating records from 106 long-term inventory plots spanning 30 years. We analyse three traits that have been hypothesized to respond to different environmental drivers (increase in moisture stress and atmospheric CO 2 concentrations): maximum tree size, biogeographic water-deficit affiliation and wood density. Tree communities have …

An Investigation Of Implicit Theories Of Well-Being, Optimism, And Coping Mechanism Selection, Megan L. Tracy, Matthew D. Branneman
Modern Psychological Studies
Folkman and Lazarus (1991) argue that incremental theorists have more faith in their ability to alter situations and would be more likely to select active coping strategies (Hong et al., 1999). An optimistic worldview may also have important implications for the way people choose to cope (Aspinwall & Taylor, 1992). Using the MTurk online platform, the present study investigated the relationship between implicit personality theories (IPT), optimism, and coping mechanism selection. As hypothesized, incremental beliefs were associated with more optimism. However, they were also associated with a greater likelihood of using self-blame, which is typically conceptualized as a passive coping …
