Stereotype-Archetype- Prototype Chain And Historical Semiotics Of Some Azerbaijani Literary Terms, Rahilya Geybullayeva
Stereotype-Archetype- Prototype Chain And Historical Semiotics Of Some Azerbaijani Literary Terms, Rahilya Geybullayeva
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Words, like peoples, travel through their own evolutionary path, which can be retraced in one way or another. Like families and tribes, the words acquiring new shades of meaning crossbreed with other interpretations in fresh soil. Later these shades spill out into new words which, at the first glance, have nothing in common with the previous meaning of their progenitor; for example, the lexical series – semeni-sema-semela-zemlya – where each word appears to be original, however different cultures enter in new semiotic dimensions through interpretation and translation. So, interpreting individual words in translation without any knowledge of their cultural context …

On The Relationships Among Efl Learners' Willingness To Communicate, Communication Apprehension, Self-Perceived Competence And Emotional Intelligence, Saeed Mehrpoor, Neda Soleimani
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study focused on the relationships among language learners' communication-related variables including willingness to start a communication (WTC), self-perceived communication competence (SPCC), communication apprehension (CA) and different subcomponents of emotional intelligence (EI). To this end a battery of questionnaires (WTC=20 items, Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA=24), SelfPerceived Communication Competence (SPCC =12), Emotional quotient inventory (EQI=133)) were distributed among 340 randomly selected Iranian EFL learners in Yasuj, Iran. Correlation and regression analyses showed that EFL student' EI dimensions were correlated with their WTC, SPCC, and CA. All five EI dimensions were found to be positively and significantly correlated with WTC …
Virtual Environments For The Induction Of Action, Brian Adrian Flowers
Virtual Environments For The Induction Of Action, Brian Adrian Flowers
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is a study on the ways in which Virtual Reality can actively and reactively affect human physiology. The first manuscript describes the design of a highly generalized Virtual Reality biofeedback system. This system was developed such that, given proper design, it would be able to provide users with a highly responsive Virtual Environment to meet the criteria of embodiment, which will increase the user's responsiveness to stimuli. The system also functions as a biofeedback system that can be used for biomechanical as well as physiological feedback by using a generalized design paradigm.
The second manuscript describes a biofeedback …
Value Chain Improvements In Small-Scale Fisheries: Case Studies From West Africa, Kristine Beran
Value Chain Improvements In Small-Scale Fisheries: Case Studies From West Africa, Kristine Beran
Open Access Dissertations
Seafood is one of the most traded food commodities in the world by value. Small-scale fisheries contribute significantly to the global production and supply of seafood. Yet, many small-scale fisheries in developing countries fail to maximize value of seafood products due to post-harvest loss, production, distribution, and marketing challenges. The purpose of this study is to examine how post-harvest innovations might address some of these challenges, whom they benefit along the fisheries value chain, and factors that influence adoption of innovations through two case studies in West Africa.
A multi-methods approach was used to collect extensive quantitative and qualitative data …

Oral Culture And Digital Natives: What The American Church Can Learn From The Mission Field, Pamela Jean Hiscock Braman
Oral Culture And Digital Natives: What The American Church Can Learn From The Mission Field, Pamela Jean Hiscock Braman
Doctor of Ministry
Digital Natives (those who have grown up with technology) are not just a new generation, they are a new culture which learns in a different way than the literate culture of preceding generations, but with significant similarities to oral cultures. Because of this, storytelling training models effectively working within oral culture can be utilized with Digital Natives for the successful training of emerging leaders within the Church. Section 1 describes the problem: Digital Natives differ greatly from the generations before them, including the way they learn. This creates a challenge to the Church in developing new generations of Christian leaders. …

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports on over 14,500 specialized drugtreatment facilities providing counseling, behavioral therapy, medication, case management, and other services to persons with substance-use disorders.1 Drug addiction is a complex disorder that can involve the individual's family, work, school, and community involvement with pervasive consequences, so treatment typically involves many components, with the goal of addressing each facet affected by the disorder. Residential drug-treatment programs throughout the United States follow different treatment and rehabilitation models. In Mississippi, most drug-treatment programs are offered by the Department of Mental Health, Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Services. However, residential drug-treatment …
Satanic Influences In The American Christian Church In A Post-Modern Consumer Society, Jerry F. Ressa
Satanic Influences In The American Christian Church In A Post-Modern Consumer Society, Jerry F. Ressa
Doctor of Ministry
This study seeks to propose evidences as to how and why the contemporary Christian church is satanically influenced, resulting in pain and suffering from devastating personal dysfunctions, interpersonal conflicts and divisions. This situation presents a great dilemma facing many, if not most, Christians in that they simply do not understand and are unaware of profound life altering significances of the spiritual battle being waged for souls and the satanic deceptions that draw people away from God. Satan, his fallen angels, and demons influence Christians and others through his primary tools of deceit and deception, delivered to the culture through media, …
Never Alone: Discovering The Path To Burnout Avoidance, Rick Millikin
Never Alone: Discovering The Path To Burnout Avoidance, Rick Millikin
Doctor of Ministry
Pastoral burnout, in the past century, has become an issue that captures the attention of researchers and ministry professionals alike. Experts claim that burnout is avoidable when ministers submit to an obedient, faithful pursuit of life with God rather than working at a frenzied pace to impress people and gain the approval of God. Defined as the status of an individual that has become fatigued with his or her vocation or major life activity, burnout is preceded by a long-term avoidance of the signs of weakness and an intense focus on simply working harder. Some scholars believe the primary problem …
A Discussion Starter On The Possibilities And Implications Of Cultural Intelligence For Worship, Garfield O. Harvey
A Discussion Starter On The Possibilities And Implications Of Cultural Intelligence For Worship, Garfield O. Harvey
Doctor of Ministry
Globalization influences the development of international interactions among leaders serving in cross-cultural settings and creates challenges for those who are unprepared to lead cross-culturally. For this project, cultural intelligence is the phenomenon investigated as a recommendation for cross-cultural worship. Cultural intelligence (CQ) refers to a person’s capability to adapt to the cultural environments they engage. This research examines how CQ may influence the strategic design of a church congregation’s worship practices, while honoring their cultural and biblical behaviors. Leading worship with CQ is of paramount importance if churches desire to engage people inside and outside their congregations effectively. One observation …

The Other Women’S Movement: Analyzing Women’S Support For Populist-Radical Right Parties And Candidates, Katelyn Schwiderski
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
This study seeks to answer the question of why women vote for populist-radical right (PRR) parties or candidates, which are often depicted as uniquely sexist “men’s parties.” Using survey data from the 2014 European Social Survey (ESS Round 7), a binary logistic regression analyzes the relationship between PRR attitudes, individual demographic characteristics, and the probability of expressing affinity with a PRR party. This study ultimately finds that women who hold a traditional gender ideology and strong populist anti-elite views are more likely than other women to support a PRR party. The findings also show that low levels of education are …

APOPO is a non-profit organization with roots in Belgium. For 20 years we have trained African giant pouched rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis around the world. APOPO trains the ‘HeroRATs’ using positive reinforcement – they receive tasty treats when they identify a target scent. HeroRATs are at the core of the organization and this is reflected in the way we protect them and provide loving care and attention.
The main hub of the organization, the Training and R&D center, is located in Tanzania, where all the HeroRATs are trained before being sent to global operations. This is where all …

Genetic Attributions: Sign Of Intolerance Or Acceptance?, Stephen P. Schneider, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Many scholars argue that people who attribute human characteristics to genetic causes also tend to hold politically and socially problematic attitudes. More specifically, public acceptance of genetic influences is believed to be associated with intolerance, prejudice, and the legitimation of social inequities and laissez-faire policies. We test these expectations with original data from two nationally representative samples that allow us to identify the American public’s attributional patterns across 18 diverse traits. Key findings are (1) genetic attributions are actually more likely to be made by liberals, not conservatives; (2) genetic attributions are associated with higher, not lower, levels of tolerance …

The distinct evolutionary pressures faced by Pinnipeds have likely resulted in strong coevolutionary ties to their parasites (Leidenberger et al., 2007). This study focuses on the phocid seal filarial heartworm speciesAcanthocheilonema spirocauda. A. spirocauda is known to infect a variety of phocid seals, but does not appear to be restricted to a single host species (Measures et al., 1997; Leidenberger et al., 2007; Lehnert et al., 2015). However, to date, seal heartworm has never been reported in grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) (Measures et al., 1997; Leidenberger et al., 2007; Lehnert et al., 2015). The proposed vector for seal heartworm is …

Using Physiological Measures To Measure Changes In Cognitive Load Associated With Automaticity And Transfer, Joanna Verden
Using Physiological Measures To Measure Changes In Cognitive Load Associated With Automaticity And Transfer, Joanna Verden
Theses : Honours
This study investigated the ability of two physiological measures, galvanic skin response and heat flux, to reflect changes in cognitive load using a variation of the dot counting task developed by Lassaline and Logan (1993). Concurrently, the robustness of the dual processing theory of automaticity was evaluated via disruption. The utilised task was designed to create a shift from controlled to automatic processing via practice, followed by a return to controlled processing via the introduction of a 6-digit memory recognition task designed to increase working-memory load and disrupt automaticity. As reaction time has previously been demonstrated to be a reliable …
Surface And Structural Modification Of Carbon Electrodes For Electroanalysis And Electrochemical Conversion, Yan Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Electrocatalysis is key to both sensitive electrochemical sensing and efficient electrochemical energy conversion. Despite high catalytic activity, traditional metal catalysts have poor stability, low selectivity, and high cost. Metal-free, carbon-based materials are emerging as alternatives to metal-based catalysts because of their attractive features including natural abundance, environmental friendliness, high electrical conductivity, and large surface area. Altering surface functionalities and heteroatom doping are effective ways to promote catalytic performance of carbon-based catalysts. The first chapter of this dissertation focuses on developing electrode modification methods for electrochemical sensing of biomolecules. After electrochemical pretreatment, glassy carbon demonstrates impressive figures-of-merit in detecting small, redox-active …
Determining The Potential Joint Effect Of Obesity And Diabetes On Clinical Outcomes Following Ischemic Stroke And Issues Related To The Measures Of Obesity, Colleen Bauza
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity and diabetes mellitus (or diabetes) in the US has each increased over 200%. Furthermore, obesity and diabetes are each a risk factor for the incidence of an ischemic stroke and are each independently associated with clinical outcomes following an ischemic stroke (e.g., functional disability, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular-related mortality). To date, no study has investigated the presence of a joint effect of obesity and diabetes on clinical outcomes following an ischemic stroke. Further, no study has illustrated the extent to which misclassification and measurement error are present in exposure assessment of obesity within a …

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor As A Biomarker For Aging And Dementia, Krishna Lajwanti Bharani
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The number of people with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is increasing worldwide. Although AD pathology begins well before clinical symptoms are apparent, identifying individuals at risk of developing AD to provide early interventions is still a challenge. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is produced by neurons and glial cells and has complex interactions with AD pathology. BDNF also crosses the blood-brain barrier and can be measured in serum or plasma. In this dissertation, I investigated the biomarker potential of serum BDNF for AD using post mortem human samples, an aged rat model of cognitive impairment, and blood samples from …
Screen For Novel Small Molecules For The Reduction Of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels, Mary Regina Paige Lamprecht
Screen For Novel Small Molecules For The Reduction Of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels, Mary Regina Paige Lamprecht
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Hypercholesterolemia is a highly prevalent disease often treated with statin therapy. Statins lower serum cholesterol level by increasing the level of low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDLR) in liver cells, which bind to and remove low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). However, up to 39% of individuals fail to meet LDL-C goals. There are FDA approved alternatives to statins such as Evolocumab (PCSK9 inhibitor), as well as Mipromersen (oligonucleotide inhibitor of ApoB synthesis) and Lomitapide (MTTP inhibitor). Evolocumab is cost prohibitive and, along with statins, has little to no effect in patients with LDLR mutations such as Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH), which is an inherited …

Pcsk9 Inhibitor Uptake Trends By Insurance Payers At Six Months Post Fda Approval, George Thomas Vass
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
PURPOSE: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors have shown superb efficacy in lowing LDL-C for patients who are not controlled by or are intolerant of first line medications such as high intensity statins and ezetimibe. Yet because of their high yearly cost of over $14,000 along with life-long cumulative costs, insurance payers have created strict guidelines to control utilization. This is an important area of research because there are no large retrospective studies that have examined the differences in utilization uptake of PCSK9 inhibitors among the major payer categories. The purpose of this study is to establish whether insurance …
