Whether, When, And How: Fertility Intentions And Age In The U.S., Andrea Melnikas Jan 2018

Whether, When, And How: Fertility Intentions And Age In The U.S., Andrea Melnikas

Dissertations and Theses

Thinking about, planning for, and having children is a deeply personal experience influenced by myriad factors at individual, intrapersonal, community and larger social levels. Examining fertility intentions is of interest to researchers from numerous social science disciplines in part because these intentions are potentially tied to larger demographic and economic shifts. In recent years in the U.S. the mean age at first birth has been increasing, with more women of older ages (age 35 and older) giving birth, due to both delays in childbearing that accompanied larger social trends such as increased educational and career opportunities and a decrease in …

Pseudomonas And Burkholderia Inhibit Growth And Asexual Development Of Phytophthora Capsici, Amena Khatun, Tarin Farhana, Abdullah As Sabir, Shah Mohammad Naimul Islam, Helen M. West, Mahfuzur Rahman, Tofazzal Islam

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize antagonistic rhizobacteria from chili against a notorious phytopathogen Phytophthora capsici. Among the 48 bacteria isolated, BTLbbc-02, BTLbbc-03, and BTLbbc-05 were selected based on their inhibitory activity against P. capsici. They were tentatively identified as Burkholderia metallica BTLbbc-02, Burkholderia cepacia BTLbbc-03, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa BTLbbc-05, respectively, based on their 16S rRNA gene sequencing. All inhibited the growth of P. capsici at varying levels by inducing characteristic morphological alterations of P. capsici hyphae. The cell-free culture supernatant of all three isolates impaired motility (up to 100%) and caused lysis …

The Influence Of Resting State Functional Connectivity On Personality Traits In Adolescents And Young Adults, Brandon Vaughan Jan 2018

The Influence Of Resting State Functional Connectivity On Personality Traits In Adolescents And Young Adults, Brandon Vaughan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The neurobiological basis of individual differences in personality is still poorly understood. Previous research has previously linked personality traits to risk factors for developing mental illness or engaging in high-risk behavior. Previous research has also linked personality traits to individual differences in resting state functional connectivity, which describes regional interactions in the brain when a person is not engaged in an active task. This study aimed to apply a theory of personality derived from behavioral neuroscience and ethology known as Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) to the characterization of brain networks underlying personality. RST defines four motivational systems in the brain, …

Public Health Preparedness & Response: An Exercise In Administrative Law, John D. Blum, Jordan Paradise

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Responses to epidemics, pandemics, and other biological disasters require multiple coordinated initiatives that combine sophisticated planning, sound emergency management, effective stockpiles, solid geographic information systems, well-developed laboratory surveillance and response, and effective management capabilities. Critical to the noted elements of planning and response is the existence of a legal structure, which underpins the operations of necessary programs. While the law may not be the first public health tool considered in a disaster, it is fundamental to the effective functioning of multiple actors and must be harmonized across jurisdictional lines. This article explores the role of law in pandemics and other …

On The Affine-Periodic Solutions Of Discrete Dynamical Systems, Halis Can Koyuncuo?Lu, Murat Adivar Jan 2018

On The Affine-Periodic Solutions Of Discrete Dynamical Systems, Halis Can Koyuncuo?Lu, Murat Adivar

College of Business and Economics

Affine periodicity is a generalization of the notion of conventional periodicity and it is a symmetry property for classes of functions. This study is concerned with the existence of (Q; T) -affine periodic solutions of discrete dynamical systems. Sufficient conditions for the main results are proposed due to discrete exponential dichotomy and fixed point theory. Obtained results are also implemented for some economical and biological models. In particular cases, our results cover some existing results in the literature for periodic, antiperiodic, or quasiperiodic solutions of difference equations.

Evidence That Speciation Of Oxovanadium Complexes Does Not Solely Account For Inhibition Of Leishmania Acid Phosphatases, Benjamin M. Dorsey, Craig C. Mclauchlan, Marjorie A. Jones

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease affecting a diverse spectra of populations, with 1.6 million new cases reported each year. Current treatment options are costly and have harsh side effects. New therapeutic options that have been previously identified, but still underappreciated as potential pharmaceutical targets, are Leishmania secreted acid phosphatases (SAP). These acid phosphatases, which are reported to play a role in the survival of the parasite in the sand fly vector, and in homing to the host macrophage, are inhibited by orthovanadate and decavanadate. Here, we use L. tarentolae to further evaluate these inhibitors. Using enzyme assays, and UV-visible spectroscopy, …

Environmental Exposure To Atrazine And Birth Defects: An Ecological Study In Kentucky, 2005-2014, Maria Dimitrios Politis

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Atrazine is one of the most widely used pesticides in the United States. Studies have shown that pesticides, in particular herbicides such as atrazine, may be associated with birth defects. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between potential environmental exposures to atrazine in water systems and prevalence rates of birth defects for the state of Kentucky. An ecological study using the Kentucky Birth Defects Registry Surveillance and the Kentucky Geological Survey databases from 2005 to 2014 was conducted. Poisson regression was used to estimate crude and adjusted rate ratios of the association between agricultural exposure metrics …

Aging Research Using The Common Marmoset: Focus On Aging Interventions, Corinna N. Ross, Adam B. Salmon

Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Traditional animal models have been used to make seminal discoveries in biomedical research including a better understanding of the biology of the aging process. However, translation of these findings from laboratory to clinical populations has likely been hindered due to fundamental biological and physiological differences between common laboratory animals and humans. Non-human primates (NHP) may serve as an effective bridge towards translation, and short-lived NHP like the common marmoset offer many advantages as models for aging research. Here, we address these advantages and discuss what is currently understood about the changes in physiology and pathology that occur with age in …

Structural Identification And Kinetic Analysis Of The In Vitro Products Formed By Reaction Of Bisphenol A‑3,4-Quinone With N‑Acetylcysteine And Glutathione, Douglas E. Stack, John A. Conrad, Bejan Mahmud

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Bisphenol A (BPA) has received considerable attention as an endocrine disrupting chemical and a possible substrate for genotoxic metabolites. BPA metabolism leads to formation of electrophilic o-quinones cable of binding to DNA and other endogenous nucleophiles. We have structurally identified the products resulting from the reaction of bisphenol A-3,4-quinone (BPAQ) with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and glutathione (GSH). The major and minor isomers are both the result of 1,6-conjugate addition and are produced almost instantly in high yield. Reactions using 1.3 equiv of GSH showed the presence of a bis-glutathionyl adduct which was not observed using higher GSH concentration relative to BPAQ. …

Prediction Of Novel Anti-Ebola Virus Compounds Utilizing Artificial Neural Network (Ann), Ronald Bartzatt

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Artificial Neural Network (ANN) analysis is shown to predict the molecular properties of new anti-EBOLA compounds following training/learning by use of 60 previously known and studied drugs. Following training/learning by applying properties of 60 known drugs the TIBERIUS ANN system can efficiently predict the molecular properties of comparable new drugs. Molecular weight (MW) is an important and dominant property of perspective drugs considered for clinical trials. TIBERIUS ANN was able to predict comparable values of MW for drugs following training cycles. One-way ANOVA, F and T tests indicate that actual and predicted MW have the same means (P=.99). Passing-Bablok regression …
