Eros And Polemos: Eroticized Combat In The Trojan War Myth, John Dayton
Eros And Polemos: Eroticized Combat In The Trojan War Myth, John Dayton
Articles
The connections between belligerence and sexuality are well known to ethologists and anthropologists and have received some attention in literary analysis. This study examines the Trojan War, in the mythical matter itself and in its treatment by Homer, as a figurative amatory conquest. We note first the element of female eroticism in the background: the war begins with a beauty contest and Helen’s abduction, and Homer’s Iliad begins in a symmetrical pattern with a quarrel over desirable captive women. These events reflect a primal relationship between combat and access to females. But we also notice that the Trojan males are …

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a debilitating pediatric autoimmune disease manifesting with characteristic rash and muscle weakness. To delineate signaling abnormalities in JDM, mass cytometry was performed with PBMCs from treatment-naive JDM patients and controls. NK cell percentages were lower while frequencies of naive B cells and naive CD4+ T cells were higher in JDM patients than in controls. These cell frequency differences were attenuated with cessation of active disease. A large number of signaling differences were identified in treatment-naive JDM patients compared with controls. Classification models incorporating feature selection demonstrated that differences in phospholipase Cγ2 (PLCγ2) phosphorylation comprised 10 of …
Investigating High Energy Mixing In Cement-Based Materials, Aileen Vandenberg
Investigating High Energy Mixing In Cement-Based Materials, Aileen Vandenberg
Doctoral Dissertations
One of the current challenges to nano-engineering cementitious composite materials is obtaining properly dispersed nano-sized particles in the cementitious composite matrix. Properly dispersed nanoparticles can lead to an improved particle packing density, a key parameter to improving the mechanical, chemical, and sustainable properties of the cementitious composite. Broadening the particle size distributions of cementitious materials, such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), to include additional nano-sized particles is a challenge that requires a better understanding of how they self-assemble in the cementitious matrix. Thus, the purpose of this research is to investigate the role mixing plays in multi-scale, multi-phase self-assembling cement-based …
The Effect Of Naprotechnology On Marital Interaction In Couples With Infertility, Anna Camacho
The Effect Of Naprotechnology On Marital Interaction In Couples With Infertility, Anna Camacho
Doctoral Dissertations
Background: Infertility, or the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to live birth, affects one in sixteen married women. Stress that arises from infertility treatment may affect marital interaction, specifically, satisfaction. An emerging approach in infertility diagnosis and treatment called NaProTECHNOLOGY (NPT) may benefit marital interactions; however, no studies have explored marital satisfaction in this specific population. Objectives: To examine demographic variables and marital satisfaction scores in couples with infertility who are using NPT. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was completed utilizing demographic surveys and the Index of Marital Satisfaction (IMS). Results: The sample consisted of 36 couples …

Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of Core Stl14: An Early Pleistocene-To-Present Paleoclimate Archive From Stoneman Lake, Arizona, Spencer Staley
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
An 80 m lacustrine sediment core (STL14) from Stoneman Lake, Coconino County, Arizona, contains a sedimentary sequence of at least 1.5 million years, chronicling the complete history of basin infill and recording an extensive and high-resolution archive of climatic and hydrologic fluctuations. Lake levels in this small, internally-drained catchment are sensitive to changes in regional hydrologic balance. Consistent groundwater inflow, even during regionally dry episodes in the lake’s history, has prevented complete desiccation of the lake and sustained continuous lacustrine deposition except for one soil horizon. Multiproxy analysis of sedimentological indicators including lithofacies, color, wet bulk density, magnetic susceptibility, preliminary …
Teacher Perceptions Of Ability In Implementing A Culturally Responsive Educational Practice For Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students With Dis/Abilities, Melanie Ziebatree
Teacher Perceptions Of Ability In Implementing A Culturally Responsive Educational Practice For Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students With Dis/Abilities, Melanie Ziebatree
Dissertations
All children in the United States have the right to an equitable education, regardless of gender, religion, class, race, culture, language, or dis/ability. The literature demonstrates that financial, educational, and legal outcomes are disproportionately negative for those students falling outside of white able-bodied norms and that educational institutions often perpetuate exclusive policies and practices that disproportionately impact culturally linguistically diverse students with dis/abilities. A critical examination of the sociopolitical and contextual factors that fortify the barriers faced by marginalized groups highlights the need for a culturally responsive approach to educating students with multidimensional identities.
To serve the needs resulting from …

Improving Elementary Students’ Complete Mental Health: Examining The Added Impact Of A Teacher-Focused Strengths-Based Intervention, Mollie Mccullough Headley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Teaching is considered one of the most challenging professions, often associated with high levels of occupational stress and job turnover that perpetuates additional negative outcomes including depleted funding for school districts, poor education quality, and reduced student academic performance. Research shows that teachers are an integral part of the classroom with the power to positively influence students’ perceived classroom support and emotional competence (Jennings & Greenberg, 2009). Positive psychology has facilitated school-based initiatives that foster feelings of subjective well-being (happiness) through the implementation of brief, scripted activities (i.e., Positive Psychology Interventions; PPIs) that reflect the thoughts and behaviors of happy …

Beauty And The Beasts: Making Places With Literary Animals Of Florida, Haili A. Alcorn
Beauty And The Beasts: Making Places With Literary Animals Of Florida, Haili A. Alcorn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Place theory examines the relationship between human identity and physical locations, asking how meaningful attachments are formed between people and the spots they visit or in which they live. Literature of place exhibits this relationship and the myriad ways humans connect to their environment through storytelling, both fictional and nonfictional. Florida literature, an emerging and dynamic genre, features characters, cultures, and histories heavily embedded in place. Florida’s places also abound with animal presences, and literature about Florida almost always illustrates significant human-animal interactions that drive plots and character development. Therefore, Florida literature invites consideration of how animals influence human attachment …
Proteolysis Of Cx3cl1 Impacts Cx3cr1 Signaling And Therapeutic Benefits In A Tauopathy Model, Dylan John Finneran
Proteolysis Of Cx3cl1 Impacts Cx3cr1 Signaling And Therapeutic Benefits In A Tauopathy Model, Dylan John Finneran
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia. The hallmark pathologies of AD are extracellular aggregates of amyloid-beta, intracellular aggregates of microtubule associated protein tau and increased neuroinflammation. Current therapeutics offer only symptomatic relief and clinical trials investigating therapeutic benefits of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have yielded no positive results. Therefore, recent work has focused on immunomodulators, such as CD200 and fractalkine, as potential therapeutic targets for AD.
Fractalkine (CX3CL1; FKN) is expressed as a transmembrane protein with an N-terminal chemokine domain followed by a long, mucin-like stalk. FKN can signal as a membrane-bound …
Materials And Methods To Fabricate Porous Structures Using Additive Manufacturing Techniques, Mohsen Ziaee
Materials And Methods To Fabricate Porous Structures Using Additive Manufacturing Techniques, Mohsen Ziaee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Additive Manufacturing (AM), as the name implies, produces three-dimensional objects by progressively adding material rather than cutting away unneeded material. Typically this is done by processing a series of cross-sections obtained from a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model of the object. AM systems can process liquid photopolymers and solid materials in form of powder, wire and laminates to create intricate geometries in a short lead time.
This superb capability of AM methods enables to locally suit the properties of the part for the desired function by incorporating the designed pores in the CAD model [2]. The pore gradient creation opens …

Protein misfolding is linked to a wide array of human disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and type II diabetes1,2. Protective cellular protein quality control (PQC) mechanisms have evolved to selectively recognize misfolded proteins and limit their toxic effects3,4,5,6,7,8,9, thus contributing to the maintenance of the proteome (proteostasis). Here we examine how molecular chaperones and the ubiquitin–proteasome system cooperate to recognize and promote the clearance of soluble misfolded proteins. Using a panel of PQC substrates with distinct characteristics and localizations, we define distinct chaperone and ubiquitination circuitries that execute quality control in the cytoplasm and nucleus. …

Proper control of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter’s pore (MCU) is required to allow Ca2+ dependent activation of oxidative metabolism and to avoid mitochondrial Ca2+ overload and cell death. The MCU’s gatekeeping and cooperative activation is mediated by the Ca2+ sensing MICU1 protein, which has been proposed to form dimeric complexes anchored to the EMRE scaffold of MCU. We unexpectedly find that MICU1 suppresses inhibition of MCU by ruthenium red/Ru360, which bind to MCU’s DIME motif, the selectivity filter. This led us to recognize in MICU1’s sequence, a putative DIME Interacting Domain (DID) which is required for …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Pseudo-Nitzschia Genetic Diversity In The North Pacific Ocean From The Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey, R Stern, Sk Moore, Vl Trainer, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Several species of the marine diatom Pseudo-nitzschia can produce the neurotoxin domoic acid that is responsible for the seafood-borne illness amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans, marine wildlife mortalities and prolonged closures of fisheries resulting in economic losses to coastal communities. Since the year 2000, Pseudo-nitzschia species have been monitored in the Pacific Ocean with the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR). We used a combination of scanning electron microscopy with high-throughput and Sanger sequencing of CPR survey samples to compare the diversity of phytoplankton, including Pseudo-nitzschia species, from the north-eastern Pacific Ocean over 3 climatically different years: 2002, 2005 and 2008. Germination timing has a strong influence on direct seeding efforts, and therefore is a closely tracked demographic stage in a wide variety of wildland and agricultural settings. Predictive seed germination models, based on soil moisture and temperature data in the seed zone are an efficient method of estimating germination timing. We utilized Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create Auto‐Germ, which is an Excel workbook that allows a user to estimate field germination timing based on wet‐thermal accumulation models and field temperature and soil moisture data. To demonstrate the capabilities of Auto‐Germ, we calculated various germination indices and modeled germination …
Parenting A Child With A Chronic Health Condition: Examining Caregivers’ Health Outcomes, Courtney R. Lincoln
Parenting A Child With A Chronic Health Condition: Examining Caregivers’ Health Outcomes, Courtney R. Lincoln
Doctoral Dissertations
The prevalence of chronic health conditions (CHCs) in childhood is increasing, and more parents must learn to contend with the challenge of providing care to a child with a CHC (Cousino & Hazen, 2013; Klassen et al., 2007; Perrin et al., 2007; Pinquart, 2013; Van Cleave et al., 2010). Previous research indicates that parents of a child with a CHC experience high levels of caregiver burden and psychological distress along with high levels of perceived benefit as a result of parenting their child (Brandon, 2007; Chen & Newacheck, 2006; Guðmundsdóttir et al., 2006; Hatzmann et al., 2014; Hungerbuehler et al., …

The purpose of this project is to highlight the significant need for an eating disorder curriculum and/or in-service for educators in the school system. This project includes an in-service that is tailored for elementary school teachers in the areas of eating disorder identification, warning signs, resources, lesson planning cautions, where to turn for help, and what to do when dealing with a student who is struggling. The research behind this project highlighted an extreme deficit in teacher preparedness for students with eating disorders and a self-identified lack of confidence in their ability to handle such situations. I hope this training …
Resilience And College Persistence: Characterizing Students Who Have Failed Courses, Mary Merrifield
Resilience And College Persistence: Characterizing Students Who Have Failed Courses, Mary Merrifield
Dissertations
Students who fail a course early in their college careers are at risk of leaving college before completion of their programs. Little is known about this high-risk group and why some members of this group complete their programs while others do not. This research addressed this gap in the college-level persistence literature by focusing first on differences between completers and non-completers, then on differences between students who fail a course early in their college careers but become completers or non-completers. The goal was to understand the protective value of individual traits beyond the prediction of risk based on membership to …
