Objective
To identify associations between circulating endocannabinoids and craving during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. This report is a secondary analysis of a trial registered in clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01407692.
Methods
Seventeen premenopausal women were studied during the follicular and luteal phases of their menstrual cycle. Previously we had reported fasting plasma estradiol, progesterone, leptin associations with luteal phase cravings for carbohydrate, fat, sweet-rich foods, and eating behavior. Here, we measured fasting plasma endocannabinoids (ECs) endocannabinoid-like substances (ECLs), and postprandial metabolic responses to a mixed meal challenge. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate relationships between measured variables and …
Two Directions Toward Ethical Peoplehood, Jonathan R. Cohen
Two Directions Toward Ethical Peoplehood, Jonathan R. Cohen
UF Law Faculty Publications
From the biblical era through the present day, the conception of Israel as a people devoted to ethical ends has been a core Jewish value. But how is such a model to be implemented? This essay suggests two basic ways of thinking about ethical peoplehood, namely, that one can begin with a people and try to transform it into an ethical people ("from tribe to ethics") or that one can begin with ethical norms and through those norms attempt to build a people ("from ethics to tribe"). Part I of this essay begins by sketching these two modalities in Jewish …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The larvae of the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner), can invade or penetrate packaging materials and infest food products. Energy bars with three polypropylene packaging types were challenged with eggs (first instars), third instars, and fifth instars of P. interpunctella to determine package resistance at 28 °C and 65% r.h. The packing types were also challenged with two male and two female pupae of P. interpunctella under similar conditions in order to determine which package provided the greatest protection against larval penetration. Samples infested with eggs, third instars, and pupae were evaluated after 21 days and 42 days to …

Suppression Of Aflatoxin Production In Aspergillus Species By Selected Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea) Stilbenoids, Victor S. Sobolev, R. S. Arias, Kerestin Goodman, Travis Walk, Valerie Orner, Paola C. Faustinelli, Alicia Massa
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Aspergillus flavus is a soil fungus that commonly invades peanut seeds and often produces carcinogenic aflatoxins. Under favorable conditions, the fungus-challenged peanut plant produces and accumulates resveratrol and its prenylated derivatives in response to such an invasion. These prenylated stilbenoids are considered peanut antifungal phytoalexins. However, the mechanism of peanut−fungus interaction has not been sufficiently studied. We used pure peanut stilbenoids arachidin-1, arachidin-3, and chiricanine A to study their effects on the viability of and metabolite production by several important toxigenic Aspergillus species. Significant reduction or virtually complete suppression of aflatoxin production was revealed in feeding experiments in A. flavus, …

Respect The Land - It’S Like Part Of Us: A Traditional Use Study Of Inland Dena’Ina Ties To The Chulitna River & Sixmile Lake Basins, Lake Clark National Park And Preserve, Douglas Deur, Karen Evanoff, Jamie Hebert
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
For countless generations, Lake Clark has been home to the inland Dena’ina people. This unique and vast fresh-water lake complex sits at the intersection of sprawling tundra, taiga, and jagged cordillera, dotted with villages. Here, village life has been sustained by herds of caribou, shorelines populated by moose and beaver, vast runs of salmon ascending from Bristol Bay, and other natural assets. But the area’s uniqueness extends beyond its abundant natural resources. Also unique is the National Park Service (NPS) unit that has occupied the region known as Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) in recent decades.
The study …

Unforeseen Land Uses: The Effect Of Marijuana Legalization On Land Conservation Programs, Jessica Owley
Articles
This Article explores the tension between land conservation and marijuana cultivation in the context of legalization. The legalization of marijuana has the potential to shift the locations of marijuana cultivation. Where cultivation need no longer be surreptitious and clandestine, growers may begin to explore sanctioned growing sites and methods. Thus, the shift to legalization may be accompanied by environmental and landuse implications. Investigating commercial-scale marijuana cultivation, this Article details how, in some ways, legalization can reduce environmental impacts of marijuana cultivation while also examining tricky issues regarding tensions between protected lands and marijuana cultivation. If we treat cultivation of marijuana …

Alabama Cacrep And Non-Cacrep Graduate Students' Perceptions Of Readiness To Counsel Clients With Substance Use Disorders, Keli M. Brothers
Counselor Education
A quantitative survey study was conducted to assess counselor perceptions of competence to counsel clients with substance use disorders based on educational experiences. The 31 participants included counseling graduates from two North Alabama universities, one with Council for Accrediting of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) certification and one without, and Alabama members of NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. There were no significant differences found in perceptions of competence to counsel between CACREP and non-CACREP certified graduates. However, a positive correlation was found between participants’ understanding of addiction and perceptions of readiness to counsel clients with substance use disorders.
The Changing Tides Of Adoption: Why Marriage, Race, And Family Identity Still Matter, Jessica Dixon Weaver
The Changing Tides Of Adoption: Why Marriage, Race, And Family Identity Still Matter, Jessica Dixon Weaver
SMU Law Review
This essay expounds on the shifting motivation for adoption in the United States using a critical race feminist theory lens to explore how adoption remains wedded to marriage, the control of wealth, and family identity. These three elements have been historically and legally tied to race in that the law was intentionally written to exclude certain persons of color from being able to access marriage or wealth, thereby diminishing their ability to establish family identity.
This essay proceeds in three parts. Part II sets forth an overview of the evolution of adoption by exploring the breakdown of formal adoption and …
A Guide For Occupational Therapists: Utilizing Trauma-Informed Care To Guide Intervention For Children In Foster Care, Courtney Crabill, Katie Hanson
A Guide For Occupational Therapists: Utilizing Trauma-Informed Care To Guide Intervention For Children In Foster Care, Courtney Crabill, Katie Hanson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
The purpose of this scholarly project was to create a guide for trauma-informed interventions for occupational therapists specifically to use with foster care children. Currently, there are approximately 600,000 children living in foster care in the United States (Child Welfare League of America, 2015). Children in the foster system who have experienced or witnessed violent actions often demonstrate post-traumatic stress like symptoms and diagnoses. Often times these experiences affect their development, coping skills, emotional regulation, and relationships and attachments (Lynch et al., 2017; Deutsch et al., 2015; Heim et al., 2010). It is estimated that between 40% and 60% of …

Animal-Assisted Intervention For Healthcare Professionals: An Occupational Therapy Facilitated Program, Samantha Coyle, Caitlin Duggan
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Introduction: This scholarly project explores literature regarding Animal-Assisted Interventions and possible impacts on healthcare professionals. Literature published within the past two decades has emphasized the various roles and benefits that the presence of animals may provide within various healthcare settings and with diverse populations. The evidence of animal-assisted interventions has been extensively researched and supported as it pertains to the client or patient involved. The problem is that no one has taken the time to evaluate the benefits that having an animal in the healthcare system may have on healthcare professionals (i.e. therapists, nurses, physicians). Due to the lack …

Occupational Therapy Practice Trends For Occupations Impacted By Puberty In Children With Asd, Sydney Larson, Kelsey Hemberger
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Introduction: Adolescents face physical, social, cognitive, and emotional changes during the developmental stage of puberty. Pubertal changes can be difficult for neurotypical adolescents to cope with, but especially for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, adolescents with ASD experience challenges with adapting to physical and emotional changes, managing new hygiene routines, abiding to social norms, and inappropriate sexual behaviors (Beddows & Brooks, 2016; Cridland, Caputi, Jones, & Magee, 2015; Cridland, Jones, Caputi, & Magee, 2014). While occupational therapy plays a role in helping adolescents with ASD, a lack of occupational therapy literature on this topic leads to unknown …

Superior Capsular Reconstruction In The Active Population With A Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tear, Hernandez Emmanuel
Superior Capsular Reconstruction In The Active Population With A Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tear, Hernandez Emmanuel
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
The prevalence of rotator cuff tears is a leading cause of upper extremity functional disability and affects people across the lifespan. The primary age groups that are diagnosed include young adults as well as the elderly population. Early diagnosis and identification of rotator cuff injuries are paramount for the appropriate treatment to be facilitated. Approximately one-fifth of rotator cuff tears (RCT) are diagnosed as “massive” and prove to be difficult for orthopedic surgeons to repair. If the massive RCT is also diagnosed as “irreparable”, surgical intervention is technically difficult and is a challenging procedure. Historically, treatment options have been limited …

Pre-Participation Physical Examination: Are Current Cardiovascular Recommendations Enough?, Steven Jacob Pietrusza
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Inclusion of screening electrocardiograms (EKGs) during pre-participation physical examination has been a topic of debate for some time. There is unquestioned usefulness in the ability of a well-trained health care provider in using EKG to identify cardiac abnormalities. Further, there have been several contemporary EKG criteria published that increase specificity and sensitivity of detection of disease. However, these criteria do not account for athletes less than 14 years of age, and that demographic represents a large portion of patients seeking pre-participation screenings in the United States. The lack of research into pediatric cardiac remodeling secondary to activity, coupled with the …
Comparing Prevalence Of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis Of The Jaw (Mronj) Due To Denosumab And Bisphosphonates As A Side Effect Of Osteoporosis Treatment, Kendra Apland

Characteristics Of Individuals Who Participate In Autoerotic Asphyxiation Practices: An Exploratory Study, Lauren Chapple
Characteristics Of Individuals Who Participate In Autoerotic Asphyxiation Practices: An Exploratory Study, Lauren Chapple
Theses and Dissertations
The set of behaviors known as Autoerotic Asphyxiation (AeA) have been studied, by contemporary scientific standards, for the better part of sixty years. Within that time, an inadequate amount of research has been completed on a far too narrow sample of the population, namely those who have died from the practice. AeA as a practice has been understudied to this point despite statistics that would note the potential for an unknown number of individuals to currently be practicing these behaviors. There is a paucity of both quantitative and qualitative data about living AeA practitioners. The present study uses Sex Positivity …

The Long-Term Significance Of Working As An Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, Christopher J. Felege
Theses and Dissertations
The use of undergraduate teaching assistants (UTAs) has increased in recent years at a number of institutions, especially in active-learning and high-enrollment introductory courses. Currently, there is research demonstrating their benefit to students, and the short-term impacts of the experience on the UTAs. However, no study to date has investigated the long-term impacts of the UTA experience on the participants themselves, and a number of studies call for such an investigation. This dissertation sought to fill that gap in understanding by utilizing a Grounded Theory approach to investigate the perceptions of participants who had served as an UTA in the …
Critical Counseling Competencies For The English-Speaking Caribbean, Antonia Forbes
Critical Counseling Competencies For The English-Speaking Caribbean, Antonia Forbes
Theses and Dissertations
The development of competencies for counseling persons from varying cultures around the world is an important topic of discussion within the field of counseling psychology (Turner-Essel, & Waehler, 2009; Ng & Noonan, 2012; Gerstein & AEgisdottir, 2007). Mental health and socio-emotional needs know no geographical boundaries and as such require attention in many populations which have limited formal services for these concerns. If we are to follow the multicultural competence guidelines within our discipline (Sue, Arredondo & McDavis,1992; Vera & Speight, 2003) we must meet these needs in a way that first seeks to understand our clientsâ cultural backgrounds and …
Removal Of Emerging Poly- And Per-Fluoroalkyl Substances By Water Treatment, Ryan Alexander Hanson
Removal Of Emerging Poly- And Per-Fluoroalkyl Substances By Water Treatment, Ryan Alexander Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (per- and poly-PFASs) are emerging contaminants that have raised great concern in recent years. Two anionic per-PFASs in particular, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), has received worldwide attention for their persistence in the natural environment, resistance to typical environmental degradation, bioaccumulation potential, and adverse health effects in humans. The stable chemical characteristics have enabled these chemicals to be used in many industrial and consumer products over the past 50 years. They have been detected all over the world in various environmental matrices.
The water treatment removal of per-PFASs has been well documented, but the full …

Staphylococcal Enterotoxins G And I Elicit Long-Term Anti-Tumor Responses In Humanized Hla-Dq8Αβ Transgenic Mice, Peter Knopick
Theses and Dissertations
Immunotherapies have evolved into a collection of tools used clinically in the treatment of several pathologies. Staphylococcal enterotoxin G and I are potent T cell activators that drive multifaceted immune responses and have been implicated in antitumor responses. The addition of SEG and SEI as useful immunotherapies could be underappreciated as mice do not respond as humans would to superantigen stimulation. HLA-DQ8 mice with established B16-F10 tumors receiving 50μg each SEG and SEI 6 and 9 days post tumor implant resulted in 80% progression free survival >300 days. In comparison, allogeneic C57BL/6 mice did not benefit from SEG/SEI therapy. Remarkably, …

Review Of Genetic And Maternal Effects On Tsd In Reptiles And Identification Of Population Differentiation In Putative Tsd Genes In Chelydra Serpentina, Danielle Roush
Theses and Dissertations
Variation in sex ratio among clutches of eggs from different females is common in reptiles with TSD, but the mechanisms that cause this variation are unknown. In an effort to shed light on these mechanisms, we first critically review literature that examines variation in temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) within species. Genetic variation in TSD and maternal effects on TSD are two major mechanisms that have received attention. We outline the types of experiments and data required to demonstrate that a) genetic variation, b) maternally derived steroids, or c) both factors influence variation in sex ratio among clutches. Next, we compare …
A Theoretical Framework Of Sports Team’S Well-Being: An Integrative Perspective Of Emotional Intelligence And Equivocality On Trust And Happiness, Drew Sannes, Wooyang Kim
A Theoretical Framework Of Sports Team’S Well-Being: An Integrative Perspective Of Emotional Intelligence And Equivocality On Trust And Happiness, Drew Sannes, Wooyang Kim
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Abstract – The purpose of this study is to develop and provide an integrative conceptual model of sports teams’ well-being to achieve a win-win situation of happiness for all stakeholders of sports teams, grounded in role theory and commitment-trust theory. We first conceptualized the well-being as an ultimate consequence by exploring sub-dimensions of happiness and provide relevant propositions linking with the respective antecedents. Second, we explored the effect of antecedents of sports team’s well-being in the spectrum of the anchor between positive and negative sides on the resultant outcomes – i.e., trust and happiness. Third, we examined the role of …
