Hablando Del Autismo: Autism Coverage In South America, Silvia Luengo Jan 2018

Hablando Del Autismo: Autism Coverage In South America, Silvia Luengo

Honors Program Theses

Based on media framing theory, this exploratory and comparative investigation quantitatively analyzes autism coverage in the top two newspapers from Venezuela and Argentina between the years of 2010 and 2017 in their native language, Spanish. The results indicate there are significant differences between the countries’ coverage of autism in their description of issues, discourse types, sources, images, roles and stigmatizing cues. These differences notwithstanding, science and public relations are the main top two issues reported in both countries. Additionally, a scientific discourse type is more common in Venezuelan articles than in Argentina which focuses on human-interest stories. Individuals with autism …

Praxair V. Mallinckrodt: An Expanded Interpretation Of The Printed Matter Doctrine With Important Implications For Biotechnology, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

Although the “printed matter doctrine” has a long history in U.S. patent law, until recently it has played a relatively minor role in policing patent-ability, so much so that an article published in 1994 essentially wrote it off as nothing more than an “archaic common law has-been.” Although the doctrine is rooted in the concept of patent eligibility, it is never mentioned in recent patent eligibility decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court such as Mayo and Alice, and patent law treatises and casebooks tend to give the doctrine little if any coverage. At its core, the printed matter doctrine has …

Vanda V. West-Ward Pharmaceuticals: Good News For The Patent Eligibility Of Diagnostics And Personalized Medicine, With Some Important Caveats, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

In Mayo v. Prometheus, decided in 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated patent claims directed towards diagnostic methods useful in the optimization of drug dosage for the needs of an individual patient, i.e., an example of personalized medicine, based on the Court’s determination that the claims were directed towards a patent ineligible law of nature. Notably, the claims in Mayo did not recite a step of applying the information generated by the test, e.g., a step of administering the drug to a patient at the optimized dosage. Some, including this author, have speculated that inclusion of such a step might …

Gait Development In African Elephant Calves, Brandon Austin-Elizondo Knepper Jan 2018

Gait Development In African Elephant Calves, Brandon Austin-Elizondo Knepper

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Most descriptions of elephant locomotion recognize only one gait: the lateral sequence walk. In contrast, several studies on African elephants (Loxodonta africana) have indicated that elephants use at least two other gaits: an amble and a trot. Other animals modify their gaits over the lifespan, but there is no published research on the gaits of elephant calves. The present study examines gait development in African elephant calves born at the Indianapolis Zoo between 2000 and 2015. I conducted frame-by-frame analysis on the gait samples of six calves across two time periods: Early (zero to six months of age) and Late …

Nuclear Features Of The Heterotrich Ciliate Blepharisma Americanum: Genomic Amplification, Life Cycle, And Nuclear Inclusion, Megan M. Wancura, Ying Yan, Laura A. Katz, Xyrus X. Maurer-Alcalá

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Blepharisma americanum, a member of the understudied ciliate class Heterotrichea, has a moniliform somatic macronucleus that resembles beads on a string. Blepharisma americanum is distinguishable by its pink coloration derived from the autofluorescent pigment blepharismin and tends to have a single somatic macronucleus with 3–6 nodes and multiple germline micronuclei. We used fluorescence confocal microscopy to explore the DNA content and amplification between the somatic and germline nuclei of B. americanum through its life cycle. We estimate that the DNA content of the macronucleus and micronucleus are 43 ± 8 Gbp and 83 ± 16 Mbp respectively. This correlates with …

Entertainment As Crime Prevention: Evidence From Chicago Sports Games., Hannah S. Lacqueur, Ryan W. Copus Jan 2018

Entertainment As Crime Prevention: Evidence From Chicago Sports Games., Hannah S. Lacqueur, Ryan W. Copus

Faculty Works

The concern that mass media may be responsible for aggressive and criminal behavior is widespread. Comparatively little consideration has been given to its potential diversionary function. This paper contributes to the emerging body of literature on entertainment as a determinant of crime by analyzing Chicago by-the-minute crime reports during major sporting events. Sports provide an exogenous infusion of TV diversion that we leverage to test the effect of entertainment on crime. Because the scheduling of a sporting event should be random with respect to crime within a given month, day of the week, and time, we use month-time-day-of-week fixed effects …

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Grain and oilseed crops stored in bins undergo compaction due to overbearing pressure of the grain inside the structure. Thus, volume measurements of grain in bins need to be combined with the amount of packing (usually called pack factor) in addition to the initial density so that the mass in the structure can be calculated. Multiple pack factor prediction methods are in use in the grain industry, but they have only been validated in the literature and compared with field data for corn and hard red winter wheat. Predictions from WPACKING, the program in ASABE Standard EP413.2, and two standard …

Assessing Intra-Event Phosphorus Dynamics In Drainage Water Using Phosphate Stable Oxygen Isotopes, William Ford Iii, Mark R. Williams, Megan B. Young, Kevin W. King, Eric Fischer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Quantifying fluxes and pathways of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in tile-drained landscapes has been hampered by a lack of measurements that are sensitive to P fate and transport processes. One potential tool to help understand these dynamics is the oxygen isotope signature of phosphate (δ18OPO4); however, its potential benefits and limitations are not well understood for intra-event dynamics at the field scale. The objectives of this study were to quantify intra-event variability of δ18OPO4 signatures in tile drainage water and assess the efficacy of δ18OPO4 to elucidate mechanisms and flow …

Using The Literature To Identify Confounders, Scott Malec Jan 2018

Using The Literature To Identify Confounders, Scott Malec

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Prior work in causal modeling has focused primarily on learning graph structures and parameters to model data generating processes from observational or experimental data, while the focus of the literature-based discovery paradigm was to identify novel therapeutic hypotheses in publicly available knowledge. The critical contribution of this dissertation is to refashion the literature-based discovery paradigm as a means to populate causal models with relevant covariates to abet causal inference. In particular, this dissertation describes a generalizable framework for mapping from causal propositions in the literature to subgraphs populated by instantiated variables that reflect observational data. The observational data are those …

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Recently, numerous states have considered enacting transgender bathroom laws based on the individual’s biological sex. In some cases, when these biology-based laws have been enacted, the results have been lawsuits filed by students and employees claiming violations of Title IX and Title VII. Actually, the legal rights of transgender students and employees when using public restrooms or facilities has become a hot topic of debate in recent times. In addressing this hotly debated topic, this article focuses on the transgender bathroom issue at the state level and provides insight into the attempts by states to turn policy into law. First, …

Psychedelic Medicine For Mental Illness And Substance Use Disorders: Overcoming Social And Legal Obstacles, Mason Marks Jan 2018

Psychedelic Medicine For Mental Illness And Substance Use Disorders: Overcoming Social And Legal Obstacles, Mason Marks

Scholarly Publications

Mental illness is a public health crisis. Millions of Americans suffer through their days crippled by symptoms of mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. These conditions take large social and economic tolls on our communities. However, the medicines used to treat them have remained largely unchanged for over fifty years. Though helpful to many people, traditional psychiatric drugs are often ineffective, prompting patients and physicians to seek alternatives including psychedelic compounds such as ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, and DMT. These drugs showed therapeutic potential in the mid-twentieth century until the U.S. War on Drugs halted all research. Now, having few alternatives, …

Single Or Taken: The Effect Of Relationship Status, Gender, And Interaction With The Opposite Sex On Arousal And Spatial Ability, Kylie Mcgee

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to examine the effect that relationship status, gender, and interaction with the opposite sex has on nervous system arousal and spatial ability. In the first experiment, 20 female participants were selected, 10 being in a committed relationship and 10 being single. Spatial ability and heart rate was measured for each participant before and after mixed-sex dyadic interactions. Results showed that a person’s relationship status does indeed have an effect on nervous system arousal after a mixed-sex dyadic interaction. In experiment two, 25 participants were studied, 13 participants were male and 12 were female. 7 …

(How) Does 360-Degree Feedback Benefit The Field Of Entrepreneurship?, Chao Miao, Ronald H. Humphrey, Shanshan Qian, In-Sue Oh

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Purpose – Most of the studies in entrepreneurship depend on single-source rating methods to collect data on both predictors and criteria. The threat to effect sizes as a result of using single-source ratings is particularly relevant to psychology-based entrepreneurship research. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the prospects of applying 360-degree feedback to the field of entrepreneurship and to discuss a set of cases regarding how 360-degree feedback may boost effect sizes in entrepreneurship research.

Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative review of current literature was performed.

Findings – The review indicated that the effect sizes in psychology-based entrepreneurship …

Happy Sun, Julien Fish Jan 2018

Happy Sun, Julien Fish

Inscape

I wept for Armando Palomo at his viewing lunch. I don't know what set me off. Maybe it was the weight of my steady indifference over the years, or the thought that had things been reversed and it been my viewing, he'd have been too busy consoling my family, stirring the mood to a warm reverence, to reckon with the reasons for our losing touch. But whatever hard truth the crying had flushed out of me was soon lost to my embarrassment at the thought that others at the table had taken my tears to mean that Armando and I …

Publications and Research

Background: Volvox carteri f. nagariensis is a model taxon that has been studied extensively at the cellular and molecular level. The most distinctive morphological attribute of V. carteri f. nagariensis within V. carteri is the production of sexual male spheroids with only a 1:1 ratio of somatic cells to sperm packets or androgonidia (sperm packet initials). However, the morphology of male spheroids of V. carteri f. nagariensis has been examined only in Japanese strains. In addition, V. carteri f. nagariensis has heterothallic sexuality; male and female sexes are determined by the sex-determining chromosomal region or mating-type locus composed of a …

Towards A Rule-Based Model Of Human Choice: On The Nature Of Homo Constitutionalus, Roger Congleton Jan 2018

Towards A Rule-Based Model Of Human Choice: On The Nature Of Homo Constitutionalus, Roger Congleton

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Anglo-American jurisprudence emphasizes the rule of reason; it grossly neglects the reason of rules. We play socioeconomic-legal-political games that can be described empirically only by their rules. But most of us play without an understanding or ap-preciation of the rules, how they came into being, how they are enforced, how they can be changed, and most important, how they can be normatively evaluated.
