Understanding And Controlling The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necropia Rufipes), Alexandria Hammel
Understanding And Controlling The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necropia Rufipes), Alexandria Hammel
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necrobia rufipes), RLHB has fascinated me since the moment we met. The beautiful greens and blues that sparkle from its elytra, the sharp and fast red legs that flash just below the body and just last month I was able to see a RLHB in flight for the first time. My squeal of delight was not left un-mocked by my coworkers. This beetle is a detrimental and determined stored product pest. One that, we in the pet food business, don’t take lightly. This generated a need for control in warehousing as distribution but …

Using Off-The-Shelf Technologies To Mass Manufacture Oral Vaccine Baits For Wildlife, Lucila M. Corro, Daniel W. Tripp, Scott A. Stelting, Michael W. Miller
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Technology and infrastructure costs can limit access to oral vaccination tools for wildlife disease control. We describe vaccine bait mass manufacturing employing off-the-shelf technologies. Our approach has helped advance scaling-up of plague vaccination campaigns, but components of this production system could be translated into other wildlife vaccination applications.

Island Fox Spatial Ecology And Implications For Management Of Disease, Jessica R. Resnik, William F. Andelt, Thomas R. Stanley, Nathan P. Snow
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Disease, predation, and genetic isolation resulted in 4 of 6 island fox (Urocyon littoralis) subspecies being listed as endangered in 2004. Potential for disease outbreaks continues to pose a major threat to the persistence of these isolated, endemic populations. We examined how roads influence the spatial ecology of San Clemente Island foxes (U. l. clementae), particularly in regard to spread of disease, to provide management recommendations for preventing or minimizing a disease outbreak on San Clemente Island, California, USA. Home range areas (x=0.75 km2) and core areas (x=0.19 km2) of foxes on …

Development Of On-Shore Behavior Among Polar Bears (Ursus Maritimus) In The Southern Beaufort Sea: Inherited Or Learned?, Kate M. Lillie, Eric M. Gese, Todd C. Atwood, Sarah A. Sonsthagen
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are experiencing rapid and substantial changes to their environment due to global climate change. Polar bears of the southern Beaufort Sea (SB) have historically spent most of the year on the sea ice. However, recent reports from Alaska indicate that the proportion of the SB subpopulation observed on-shore during late summer and early fall has increased. Our objective was to investigate whether this on-shore behavior has developed through genetic inheritance, asocial learning, or through social learning. From 2010 to 2013, genetic data were collected from SB polar bears in the fall via hair snags …
Human–Black Bear Conflicts, Carl W. Lackey, Stewart W. Breck, Brian F. Wakeling, Bryant White
Human–Black Bear Conflicts, Carl W. Lackey, Stewart W. Breck, Brian F. Wakeling, Bryant White
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Most human–black bear (Ursus americanus) conflict occurs when people make anthropogenic foods like garbage, dog food, domestic poultry, or fruit trees available to bears. Bears change their behavior to take advantage of these resources and may damage property or cause public safety concerns in the process. Managers are often forced to focus efforts on reactive non-lethal and lethal bear management techniques to solve immediate problems, which do little to address root causes of human–bear conflict. As long as bears find easy access to garbage, bird feeders, urban fruit trees, and other food subsidies, conflicts are likely to continue. …

Closing Keynote. Navigating Change: It's A Whitewater Adventure, Marjorie J. Kostelnik
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Some people think of higher education as a sleepy backwater, where hardly anything changes too often. But for all of us living through it right now, higher education has become a whitewater adventure! Change is happening all around us in hundreds of different ways. Today, we’ll explore the who, why, how and what of change.
• Who is changing…who is promoting change…who has to live with the change
• Why are some people just better at change than others and what can you do to help your organization move forward?
• How can you manage change best … both as …

Hippocampal Neuronal Integrity Reduced In Asthma: Implications For Disease Control And Cognitive Function, Juliet Kroll
Hippocampal Neuronal Integrity Reduced In Asthma: Implications For Disease Control And Cognitive Function, Juliet Kroll
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
Emerging research indicates that individuals with asthma have an increased risk of cognitive impairment, yet the associations of asthma with neural correlates of memory remain relatively unknown. The hippocampus is the predominant neural structure involved in memory, and alterations in the hippocampal metabolic profile are observed in individuals with mild cognitive impairment. We therefore hypothesized that individuals with asthma may have altered hippocampal metabolites compared to healthy controls.
Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) were used to compare hippocampal volume and metabolites of otherwise healthy adults with and without asthma (N=40), and to study the …
Backward Progress Toward Reinstating Parental Rights, Lashanda Adams
Backward Progress Toward Reinstating Parental Rights, Lashanda Adams
Journal Articles
States have passed reinstatement statutes to address the increased number of legal orphans in the foster care system. For the most part, however, these laws have been inadequate to address the problem because they are motivated by a view of terminated parents that does not fit current realities. Terminated parents have typically been viewed as obstacles to permanence rather than a realistic placement option. The laws often punish parents who opposed the termination of their parental rights and reward those who voluntarily signed relinquishments.
Reinstatement statutes alone are inadequate to address the growing concern over youth aging out of foster …

Emerald Ash Borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) Host Expansion; Trading An Optimal Host For Enemy Free Space?, David G. Olson
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is an aggressive invader from Asia that has killed millions of trees in North America. Recently EAB has been documented developing in a novel host, white fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus. I evaluated larval performance in two common ash species and white fringetree by infesting excised bolts with emerald ash borer eggs. In addition I evaluated several plant characteristics to determine which most influence larval development. I also conducted choice and no choice assays using the classical biological control agent, Tetrastichus planipennisi (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), to assess its ability to locate larval EAB in …
Dna Barcoding As A Tool For Species Discovery And Documentation In The Superfamily Ichneumonoidea, Sarah Meierotto
Dna Barcoding As A Tool For Species Discovery And Documentation In The Superfamily Ichneumonoidea, Sarah Meierotto
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Changes to traditional taxonomic methods to incorporate new technologies and methods have already improved the quality of species hypotheses, but more work can be done to improve the speed of new species documentation. The mitochondrial COI DNA barcode has been successfully used to identify species with high accuracy since the early 2000s, and has been used in conjunction with morphological examinations and other DNA markers to discover and delimit new species. This thesis explores the application of DNA barcodes as the primary data for delimitation and diagnosis of new species of ichneumonoids.
The genera Zelomorpha and Hemichoma are revised and …
Analyzing Physical Education Teacher Behavior Using Systematic Observation, Seth T. Eckler
Analyzing Physical Education Teacher Behavior Using Systematic Observation, Seth T. Eckler
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Introduction: Experts in the field have advocated that quality physical education (QPE) is the centerpiece of a comprehensive school physical education program (CSPAP). Evidence-based programs and instructional models have shown great promise in increasing the physical activity (PA) of today’s youth. However, little is known about the specific impact of teaching behaviors (TB) used within these programs and their impact on student outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use a systematic observation method that is primarily focused on analyzing TBs that are displayed in class, identify TBs that may contribute to positive student activity outcomes, and make …

Short-Chained Oligo(Ethylene Oxide)-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles: Realization Of Significant Protein Resistance, Kathryn R. Riley, C. M. Sims, I. T. Wood, D. J. Vanderah, M. L. Walker
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Protein corona formed on nanomaterial surfaces play an important role in the bioavailability and cellular uptake of nanomaterials. Modification of surfaces with oligoethylene glycols (OEG) are a common way to improve the resistivity of nanomaterials to protein adsorption. Short-chain ethylene oxide (EO) oligomers have been shown to improve the protein resistance of planar Au surfaces. We describe the application of these EO oligomers for improved protein resistance of 30 nm spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Functionalized AuNPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential measurements. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used for separation and quantitation of AuNPs …
Functional Characterization Of Scaffold Protein Shoc2, Hyein Jang
Functional Characterization Of Scaffold Protein Shoc2, Hyein Jang
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Signaling scaffolds are critical for the correct spatial organization of enzymes within the ERK1/2 signaling pathway and proper transmission of intracellular information. However, mechanisms that control molecular dynamics within scaffolding complexes, as well as biological activities regulated by the specific assemblies, remain unclear.
The scaffold protein Shoc2 is critical for transmission of the ERK1/2 pathway signals. Shoc2 accelerates ERK1/2 signaling by integrating Ras and RAF-1 enzymes into a multi-protein complex. Germ-line mutations in shoc2 cause Noonan-like RASopathy, a disorder with a wide spectrum of developmental deficiencies. However, the physiological role of Shoc2, the nature of ERK1/2 signals transduced through this …

Contextualized Writing: Promoting Audience-Centered Writing Through Scenario Based Learning, Paullett Golden
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Scenario-based learning is an approach for student-centered learning used in the medical and legal fields, but is little used in liberal arts. In this study, I examine students’ understanding and application of audience-centered writing techniques after a semester of formal scenario-based essays and problem-based activities. Comparing the grades of two experimental groups and one control group showed consistently higher class averages in the two experimental groups exposed to the problem-based scenarios, averages one to two letter grades higher than that of the control group. The findings also revealed increased critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. The summative assessment was …

Radiosity Integral Equation Model For An Interior Space Illumination Design: Mars Project, Hien Ngo
Mathematics Theses
This research project is focused on finding the true solution of the exterior Dirichlet problem to determine the convergence results for the Spherical Quatrefoil using the Galerkin Method. A mathematical model, based on the Radiosity integral equation will be utilized to investigate the role of incoming light waves for different surfaces with various emissivity and reflectivity functions. Theoretical and computational details of the method will provide sufficient information for designing proper lighting of an interior space inside a habitat that can ultimately be used for future endeavors in Mars exploration.
Conservation Limnogeology And Benthic Habitat Mapping In Central Lake Tanganyika (Tanzania), Joseph S. Lucas
Conservation Limnogeology And Benthic Habitat Mapping In Central Lake Tanganyika (Tanzania), Joseph S. Lucas
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
Small scale protected zones are valuable for helping the health and productivity of fisheries at Lake Tanganyika (East Africa). Spatial placement of protected areas relies on accurate maps of benthic habitats, consisting of detailed bathymetry data and information on lake-floor substrates. This information is unknown for most of Lake Tanganyika. Fish diversity is known to correlate with rocky substrates in ≤ 30 m water depth, which provide spawning grounds for littoral and pelagic species. These benthic habitats form important targets for protected areas, if they can be precisely located.
At the NMVA, echosounding defined the position of the 30-m isobath …

The Wisdom Of The Road: Research And Pedagogy On India-China And The Silk Roads Ethos (Sre), Payal Banerjee
Sociology: Faculty Publications
The Silk Roads Ethos (SRE; Ling, 2014) animates the idea that India and China must draw from the legacy of historical exchanges for future cooperation. Mainstream scholarship on the subject employs and relies predominantly on a state-centric rivalry-oriented framework to study the issue, in which a standard focus on demographic comparisons, growth rates, GDP, FDI, energy-security complex, and cognate connotations of “hypermasculine war games” demarcate India-China relations in mutually distinct and discrete “boxed” categories (Banerjee and Ling, 2010). It also does not engage with the growing body of historically attuned, critical scholarship that focuses on the nuances of exchange, collaboration, …
Detection Of Local Steroidogenic Enzyme Gene Expression In Brown Anoles, Ada Spahija
Detection Of Local Steroidogenic Enzyme Gene Expression In Brown Anoles, Ada Spahija
Honors Program Theses
The endocrine system in vertebrates responds to stress by releasing steroid hormones, mainly glucocorticoids (GC), which increase blood glucose levels to supply key organs and muscles with energy needed for survival. Steroid hormones are synthesized via an enzymatic pathway that converts cholesterol into either GCs, androgens, or estrogens in a step-wise manner. The adrenal cortex is known to produce GCs, but evidence suggests that individual organs can also produce steroid hormones de novo in response to stress. This study aims to quantify gene expression of four steroidogenic enzymes, encoded by CYP19A1, CYP17A1, StAR, and HSD17ß3 genes, via qRT-PCR to determine …
