Epigenetic regulators are attractive anticancer targets, but the promise of therapeutic strategies inhibiting some of these factors has not been proven in vivo or taken into account tumor cell heterogeneity. Here we show that the histone methyltransferase G9a, reported to be a therapeutic target in many cancers, is a suppressor of aggressive lung tumor-propagating cells (TPCs). Inhibition of G9a drives lung adenocarcinoma cells towards the TPC phenotype by de-repressing genes which regulate the extracellular matrix. Depletion of G9a during tumorigenesis enriches tumors in TPCs and accelerates disease progression metastasis. Depleting histone demethylases represses G9a-regulated genes and TPC phenotypes. Demethylase inhibition …

Sequence pattern mining (SPM) seeks to find multiple items that commonly occur together in a specific order. One common assumption is that all of the relevant differences between items are captured through creating distinct items, e.g., if color matters then the same item in two different colors would have two items created, one for each color. In some domains, that is unrealistic. This paper makes two contributions. The first extends SPM algorithms to allow item differentiation through attribute variables for domains with large numbers of items, e.g, by having one item with a variable with a color attribute rather than …

Statistical Multi-Way Relationships Of Human Brain Activity, Chen Feng
Statistical Multi-Way Relationships Of Human Brain Activity, Chen Feng
Theses
The human brain activity is a popular and important topic in the medical science field and academic studies. In recent years, scientists have been applying various statistical methods to analyze human brain activity. Correlation between brain regions is the most common and fundamental method used to perform this task. However, correlation describes only a two-way relationship. This work explores a new approach by analyzing multi-way relationships. Due to computational complexities, we concentrate on three-way relationships. In particular, we compare conventional two-way correlations and three-way regression models. Data transformed and processed from 3,280 MRI scans of the human brain are used …

Defining Landscape-Scale Collaboration As Used To Restore Forests And Reduce Catastrophic Wildfires, Marcelle Elise Dupraw 2512721
Defining Landscape-Scale Collaboration As Used To Restore Forests And Reduce Catastrophic Wildfires, Marcelle Elise Dupraw 2512721
The Qualitative Report
In this article, I explore the distinctive characteristics of landscape-scale collaboration in the context of forest resource management in the United States. The United States (US) is experiencing a significant increase in acres burned by wildfire in the wildland-urban interface zone, exacting a heavy toll on human life, health, property, and livelihoods. The US Forest Service’s Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) Program demonstrates an effective approach to reducing risk of catastrophic wildfire through collaborative forest restoration work at the landscape scale. This is the first in a series of articles building toward a grounded theory to guide development of the …
Spending Too Little In Hard Times, Alessandro Del Ponte, Peter Descioli
Spending Too Little In Hard Times, Alessandro Del Ponte, Peter Descioli
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
People’s decisions to consume and save resources are critical to their wellbeing. Previous experiments find that people typically spend too much because of how they discount the future. We propose that people’s motive to preserve their savings can instead cause them to spend too little in hard times. We design an economic game in which participants can store resources for the future to survive in a harsh environment. A player’s income is uncertain and consumption yields diminishing returns within each day, creating tradeoffs between spending and saving. We compare participants’ decisions to a heuristic that performed best in simulations. We …

This study explores the performance of machine learning algorithms on the classification of fossil teeth in the Family Bovidae. Isolated bovid teeth are typically the most common fossils found in southern Africa and they often constitute the basis for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Taxonomic identification of fossil bovid teeth, however, is often imprecise and subjective. Using modern teeth with known taxons, machine learning algorithms can be trained to classify fossils. Previous work by Brophy et al. [Quantitative morphological analysis of bovid teeth and implications for paleoenvironmental reconstruction of plovers lake, Gauteng Province, South Africa, J. Archaeol. Sci. 41 (2014), pp. 376–388] uses …

In the field of genetic toxicology the term aneugen is used to indicate chemical or physical agents that cause chromosomes to malsegregate during division, thereby resulting in altered DNA content in daughter cells. This form of chromosome damage can be detected in certain mammalian cell-based assays, however the molecular mechanism(s) responsible for aneugenic effects are not apparent from these conventional tests. However, the responsible molecular initiating event (MIE) is of interest to pharmaceutical, chemical, and agro-chemical industries, because this knowledge can assist their efforts to design out such liabilities and/or avoid similar chemical structures altogether. This study evaluated the ability …

My grandparents moved a mobile home onto our property when my dad got sick. They now permanently live on the bottom of our hill. My cousins, my brother and I would spend the night almost every weekend in the summer. My grandparents have a coveted guestroom that we would all fight over because one of my cousins snored and we didn’t want to share the living room with her. One night, I was the lucky one so I got to sleep in the room by myself. It was at the end of the house and the twin bed was set …

A couple of years ago, I was getting home late from a church activity. We live on a farm in the middle of nowhere, our barn is across the driveway from our house, far enough away that the light from the front porch can’t reach the entrance to the barn. We never shut the large barn door--this door is big enough for tractors and stuff to pull through and at night it is pitch black in there. We always enter in through the garage so the garage door is always open too, but my parents never remember to turn the …

Phytonutrient Intake And Body Composition Color Correlations, Ryan Orgeron
Master's Theses
This study evaluated the role of phytonutrient intake on body composition. Both the quantity and types of phytonutrients in diets were analyzed. Fifty (50) subjects (15 males; 35 females) from Thibodaux, Louisiana, were randomly selected to participate. All participants completed three 24-hour food recalls to gather intake data (food and calorie intake). The phytonutrient index (PI) was an established formula used to calculate the percentage (%) of the diet comprised of phytonutrient rich foods. Three different body assessment tools were used to determine body adiposity (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference, and fat percentage).
Participants who met healthy standards for …

Electrical Characterization Of Graphene And Nanodiamond Nanostructures, A Z M Nowzesh Hasan
Doctoral Dissertations
The electrical characterization on two-dimensional carbon-based graphene and nanodiamond materials was performed to improve charge transport properties for the label-free electrical biosensors. The charge transport in solution-gated graphene devices is affected by the impurities and disorders of the underlying dielectric interface and its interaction with the electrolytes. Advancement in field-effect ion sensing by introducing a dielectric isomorph, hexagonal boron nitride between graphene and silicon dioxide of a solution-gated graphene field-effect transistor was investigated. Increased transconductance due to increased charge carrier mobility is accompanied with larger ionic sensitivity. These findings define a standard to construct future graphene devices for biosensing and …
Multidimensional Feature Engineering For Post-Translational Modification Prediction Problems, Norman Mapes Jr.
Multidimensional Feature Engineering For Post-Translational Modification Prediction Problems, Norman Mapes Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
Protein sequence data has been produced at an astounding speed. This creates an opportunity to characterize these proteins for the treatment of illness. A crucial characterization of proteins is their post translational modifications (PTM). There are 20 amino acids coded by DNA after coding (translation) nearly every protein is modified at an amino acid level. We focus on three specific PTMs. First is the bonding formed between two cysteine amino acids, thus introducing a loop to the straight chain of a protein. Second, we predict which cysteines can generally be modified (oxidized). Finally, we predict which lysine amino acids are …

Engineered Coating Of Natural Fibers And Oil-Water Interfaces With Self-Assembly Of Clay Nanotubes, Abhishek Panchal
Doctoral Dissertations
Taking into consideration two different types of surfaces, this dissertation proposes techniques to coat the surface of natural fibers and oil-water interfaces by spontaneous self-assembly of halloysite clay nanotubes. The material of choice, halloysite clay, is a widely available natural resource and can be used after minimal processing. In regards to chemical composition, halloysite clay resembles aluminosilicate mineral kaolin; physically, a defect in the crystal structure ordering causes the sheets of kaolinite to roll into halloysite nanotubes. The dimensions of halloysite nanotubes are dependent on the source, but generally vary from 200 nm to 3 µm in length, 100-150 nm …

Theses and Dissertations
Historically the populations of many developing countries have been subjected to potable water shortages through drought and those of developed nations from pollution because of industrialization. Recently parts of our own country were in dire straits when it comes to the availability of clean drinking water due to severe drought. Existing inert processes involving activated carbon and titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated particles and membranes have shown to be effective at water purification. However, processes such as these typically require expensive infrastructure and filtration systems and consequently are not expected to be found in developing countries, where clean water is severely …

Title: Characterization of a Basement Membrane Associated Protein Encoding Gene in Drosophila melanogaster
Authors: Aref Ranjbar, Mayank Kapadia, Ajay Srivastava, PhD(faculty member, mentor)
Basement Membranes (BM) are important for normal development and tumor progression. In order to get a better understanding of BM dynamics we identified genes that encoded BM interacting proteins. One such gene is predicted to be involved in vesicle-mediated transport in Drosophila melanogaster. Here we characterize this gene by utilizing molecular biology techniques like immunohistochemistry, RNA in situ hybridization, and Western blot analysis utilizing antibodies generated in the laboratory. Western blot analysis identified this protein to be …
