Honors programs are rare in Latin America, and in Chile they were unknown before 2003. At the Universidad Austral de Chile, an interdisciplinary group of scholars linked to environmental studies put forward a pilot project for implementing a new experience in higher education. Challenged by an educational environment where (i) apathy and mediocrity have taken over the classrooms, (ii) monodisciplinary training rules the university campus, and (iii) authoritarian teaching persists, this has been an experiment in new ways of approaching the classroom. Stimulated by experiences in the USA, a project proposal was written, finding support in the Chilean Ministry of …

Determining Atg11'S Binding Interactions Using A Yeast Two Hybrid System And Directed Mutagenesis, Jesse Smith
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Autophagy is a mechanism of intracellular degradation within eukaryotes. Because of its aid to a cells longevity, autophagy is believed to be important for the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Autophagy related protein 11 (Atg11) is a coiled-coil scaffolding protein required for selective autophagy in yeast. Atg11 is known to interact with Atg1, Atg20, and Atg29, in addition to connecting cargo molecules prApel -Atg19 to the phagophore assembly site. In addition to its many functions within yeast autophagy, Atg11 has two human homologs: Huntingtin protein and FIP200. This homology encourages us to gain a further understanding of Atg11's binding sites. In …
Evolutionary History Of The Mystr Retrotransposons And Connection To Myserv Elements, Tessa Passarelli
Evolutionary History Of The Mystr Retrotransposons And Connection To Myserv Elements, Tessa Passarelli
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Retrotransposons are a group of transposable elements (TEs) that integrate into new chromosomal locations via an RNA intennediate. They are known as "jumping genes" and are transcribed as RNA, copied into DNA, and then moved to new sites in the genome. These elements comprise a large proportion of mammalian genomes. There are two types of retrotransposons- those with or without long terminal repeats. The most extensively studied family of L TR elements is known as endogenous retroviruses, which fonn when retroviruses integrate their own DNA within the genn line of their hosts. The mysTR family of LTRretrotransposons appears to be …

The Effect Of The Konjac1 And Konjac2 Proteins On Gdp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase Activity Of Vtc1, Hafsah Jamil
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Vitamin C Defective l (VTC I) is the major pyrophosphorylase involved in guanosine diphosphomannose (GDP-mannose) biosynthesis in the plantArabidopsis thaliana and it catalyzes the conversion of mannose I-phosphate and guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to GDP-mannose and pyrophosphate (PPi). The GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase (GMPPase) activity of VTCI is enhanced by the proteins KONJACI (KJCI) and KONJAC2 (KJC2), which are homologs ofVTCl. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the KJC proteins on the GDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (GGPPase) activity of VTCl. We hypothesized that the GGPPase activity of VTCl may also be enhanced due to interactions with KJCI and/or KJC2 due …
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Research, Historical Research, And Patient Narratives Of The Diagnostic Experience, Megan Halstead
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
While Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a disorder that has been studied since the mid-1800s, it is still considered to be one of the most common chronic illnesses that no one has ever heard of. The etiology of POTS is well described in modem medical literature, but the disorder continues to be misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in patients. By reviewing historical literature, patient narratives, and cross-cultural medical literature on POTS through the context of the disease vs illness model developed by medical anthropologists, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of POTS to facilitate more positive outcomes in …
Effects Of Nutrient Addition And Two Invasive Plants On Wetland Methane Production, Jaymes Dempsey
Effects Of Nutrient Addition And Two Invasive Plants On Wetland Methane Production, Jaymes Dempsey
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Wetlands provide a number of important ecosystem services, but their anoxic conditions also favor the production of several greenhouse gases. Wetlands are an ideal environment for methanogenesis, the process by which carbon dioxide is reduced to methane by wetland microbes (methanogens). As wetlands are the largest natural contributor to the atmospheric methane pool, it is important to understand variables that control wetland methane production. Nitrogen availability is one variable that likely affects methanogen communities. Nitrate drains from agricultural areas, where wetlands act as a nitrogen sink, preventing nitrate from contaminating aquatic systems. Another factor that may affect wetland methanogenesis is …

Investigating The Frequency Of Copy Number Variations (Cnvs) At Fragile Site Fra3b In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Samantha Bartolet
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In human DNA, there are loci that are prone to DNA breaks, stalled replication fork progression, and single-strand gaps when placed under replication stress. These loci are known as fragile sites and are common areas for copy number variations (CNVs). CNVs are duplications or deletions of large genomic regions and they have been linked to genetic diseases including tumor development and autism. Using a yeast chromosome modified to contain FRA3B human fragile site DNA, we investigated duplications and deletions of a reporter cassette at three locations that differ by their proximity to an AT-rich area of the fragile site, a …

The Sweet Truth: Initial And Post-Ingestive Effects Of Sugar And Protein On Taste Preferences In Rats, Katrina Prantzalos
The Sweet Truth: Initial And Post-Ingestive Effects Of Sugar And Protein On Taste Preferences In Rats, Katrina Prantzalos
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The purpose of this study is to investigate the food preferences of rats when given food with either a high protein or a high sugar content. We hoped to compare initial preferences and long-term exposure to determine the role of taste, and then post-ingestive effects, to examine if taste preferences are formed on the basis of taste alone or caused by the body's absorption of nutrients. To achieve this goal, we studied rats' food choices when presented with high protein yogurt or yogurt with a high sugar content. For half the rats two dishes were placed into the home container …
Heteromerization Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors In Human Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells: Identification Of Hetero-Oligomeric Receptor Complexes Between Α1-Adrenergic Receptors, Arginine Vasopressin Recptor 1a, Chemokine (C-X-C Motif) Receptor Type 4, And Atypical Chemokine Receptor 3., Lauren J. Albee
Dissertations
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) heteromerization is rapidly evolving field. Traditionally, GPCRs were thought to behave has independent entities or protomers. However, that line of reasoning has since been brought into question. Currently, it appears that many, if not all, GPCRs signal and function as heteromeric receptor complexes. The roles of GPCR heteromerization are vast and can include: maturation and trafficking; dynamic regulation; allostery and cooperativity; signal transduction; and receptor internalization.
The majority of studies identifying and characterizing GPCR heteromers were performed using recombinant receptors. Only four receptor pairs have been identified and validated in native tissues. The overall objective of …

Social Scientists' Conceptualization And Implementation Of Research Ethics And Integrity, Heather A. Pease
Social Scientists' Conceptualization And Implementation Of Research Ethics And Integrity, Heather A. Pease
Dissertations
The purpose of the current study is to identify core themes, values, and principles through which social scientists conceptualize and implement research ethics and integrity. Periods of rapid growth and interest in research ethics and integrity often coincide with significant scientific discoveries (e.g., mapping of the human genome) or scientific misconduct (e.g., Tuskegee studies). Even though research policies are being developed, they are done in a manner which does not maximize the opportunities to regulate ethics and integrity within social science research. The laws and programs aimed at mitigating acts of misconduct were originally intended for biomedical sciences, yet they …
