Beyond Prometheus: Creativity, Discourse, Ideology And The Anthropocene, Camilla Nelson
Beyond Prometheus: Creativity, Discourse, Ideology And The Anthropocene, Camilla Nelson
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
This article considers the strange confluence of the rhetoric of creativity and commerce at key points across the “Great Acceleration”. It argues that although the idea of creativity has its most common contemporary expression in art, it does not in fact emerge from the discourse of art. Rather, the idea of creativity as a specifically human possession emerges from the discourse of nature at the end of the eighteenth century, and particularly in the proliferation of natural scientific ideas about “natural creation”. It argues that if a global response to climate change necessitates a more enlightened remaking of ideas, industries …

Mimosa 2017/2018, Jacksonville State University
JSU Yearbooks
The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.
Trust-Based Rating Prediction And Malicious Profile Detection In Online Social Recommender Systems, Anahita Davoudi
Trust-Based Rating Prediction And Malicious Profile Detection In Online Social Recommender Systems, Anahita Davoudi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Online social networks and recommender systems have become an effective channel for influencing millions of users by facilitating exchange and spread of information. This dissertation addresses multiple challenges that are faced by online social recommender systems such as: i) finding the extent of information spread; ii) predicting the rating of a product; and iii) detecting malicious profiles. Most of the research in this area do not capture the social interactions and rely on empirical or statistical approaches without considering the temporal aspects. We capture the temporal spread of information using a probabilistic model and use non-linear differential equations to model …
Cost And Environmental Impacts Of Leachate Nitrogen/Phosphorus Management Approaches, Alaa Alanezi
Cost And Environmental Impacts Of Leachate Nitrogen/Phosphorus Management Approaches, Alaa Alanezi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Landfill leachate is a challenging wastewater to discharge into municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the most common approach for leachate management, due to the presence of contaminants that may affect the performance of the treatment plant. Treatment, disposal, and transportation of leachate are expensive and therefore a concern. Currently, sidestream treatment is becoming increasingly common in WWTPs prior to returning the liquid to the plant influent. For this research, a new treatment scheme is introduced combining centrate and leachate to reduce contaminants, recover phosphorous and nitrogen through struvite precipitation, and reduce energy requirements through anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox). By combining …

Disinfection By-Product Reduction Study Of A Small Central Florida Public Water System, Paul Staubus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The disinfection of water for potabilization has proven to be one of the most significant public achievements of the 20th century. Although chemical disinfectants are successfully utilized to inactivate acute pathogenic organisms, they may react with natural organic matter (NOM) to produce potentially-harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). As a result, the United States Environmental Protection Agency regulates DBPs such as total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). The research herein is focused on the formation, removal, and control of TTHMs and HAAs in a small public water system (PWS) in Polk County, Florida (County). Pilot-scale tests were implemented to determine the …
The Formation And Characterization Of Mesoscopic J- And H-Aggregates With Controlled Morphologies By The Co- And Templated Assembly Of Cyanine Dyes, Samuel Rhodes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The supramolecular aggregates of π-conjugated molecules have become an area of great interest to the scientific community in recent years for their promise in biosensors and optoelectronic devices. Among various supramolecular aggregates, J- and H-aggregates of πconjugated dye molecules are particularly interesting because of their unique optical and excitonic properties that are not given by individual molecules. H-aggregates are composed of dye molecules in a face-to-face stacking, giving rise to a blue-shifted absorption band compared with the monomer band and a strong emission quenching. In contrast, J-aggregates represent an edge-toedge stacking of dye molecules, showing a red-shifted absorption band with …
Human Factor Effects Of Simulating Battlefield Malodors In Field Training, William Pike
Human Factor Effects Of Simulating Battlefield Malodors In Field Training, William Pike
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In order to explore how to better utilize simulated odors for live training, a study of 180 United States Military Academy at West Point cadets was undertaken to determine whether pre-exposure to a simulated malodor may result in an amelioration of performance issues, as well as improving performance of a complex task. Exposure to malodors has long been shown to increase stress and escape behavior, and reduce performance of complex tasks, in addition to degrading other human factor areas. However, desensitization to a particular odor through a process known as olfactory adaptation, could ameliorate these performance issues. In this study, …
A Review And Selective Analysis Of 3d Display Technologies For Anatomical Education, Matthew Hackett
A Review And Selective Analysis Of 3d Display Technologies For Anatomical Education, Matthew Hackett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of anatomy is complex and difficult for students in both graduate and undergraduate education. Researchers have attempted to improve anatomical education with the inclusion of three-dimensional visualization, with the prevailing finding that 3D is beneficial to students. However, there is limited research on the relative efficacy of different 3D modalities, including monoscopic, stereoscopic, and autostereoscopic displays. This study analyzes educational performance, confidence, cognitive load, visual-spatial ability, and technology acceptance in participants using autostereoscopic 3D visualization (holograms), monoscopic 3D visualization (3DPDFs), and a control visualization (2D printed images). Participants were randomized into three treatment groups: holograms (n=60), 3DPDFs (n=60), …
Analog Temperature Control Circuit For A Thin-Film Piezoelectric-On-Substrate Microelectromechanical Systems Oscillator, Heather Hofstee
Analog Temperature Control Circuit For A Thin-Film Piezoelectric-On-Substrate Microelectromechanical Systems Oscillator, Heather Hofstee
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The objective and motivation for this project is to design a low-power, low-noise oven-control circuit to optimize the stability of a MEMS oscillator. MEMS oscillators can be fabricated using conventional semiconductor manufacturing methods and can often be assembled in packages smaller than those of traditional crystal oscillators. However, one of their largest disadvantages currently is their high temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF), causing MEMS oscillators to be especially sensitive to temperature changes. Hence, this project focuses on designing a printed circuit board that will allow the user to manually tune a current passing through a resonator wire-bonded to the board …

Cell Death As A Trigger For Morphogenesis., Boris Aguilar, Ahmadreza Ghaffarizadeh, Christopher D Johnson, Gregory J Podgorski, Ilya Shmulevich, Nicholas S Flann
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
The complex morphologies observed in many biofilms play a critical role in the survival of these microbial communities. Recently, the formation of wrinkles has been the focus of many studies aimed at finding fundamental information on morphogenesis during development. While the underlying genetic mechanisms of wrinkling are not well-understood, recent discoveries have led to the counterintuitive idea that wrinkle formation is triggered by localized cell death. This work examines the hypothesis that the material properties of a biofilm both power and control wrinkle formation within biofilms in response to localized cell death. Using an agent-based model and a high-performance platform …

The Ecology And Economics Of Restoration: When, What, Where, And How To Restore Ecosystems, Jason R. Rohr, Emily S. Bernhardt, Marc W. Cadotte, William H. Clements
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Restoration ecology has provided a suite of tools for accelerating the recovery of ecosystems damaged by drivers of global change. We review both the ecological and economic concepts developed in restoration ecology, and offer guidance on when, what, where, and how to restore ecosystems. For when to restore, we highlight the value of pursuing restoration early to prevent ecosystems from crossing tipping points and evaluating whether unassisted natural recovery is more cost-effective than active restoration. For what to restore, we encourage developing a restoration plan with stakeholders that will restore structural, compositional, and functional endpoints, and whose goal is a …

Helping faculty develop high-quality instruction that positively affects student learning can be complicated by time limitations, a lack of resources, and inexperience using student data to make iterative improvements. We describe a community of 16 faculty from five institutions who overcame these challenges and collaboratively designed, taught, iteratively revised, and published an instructional unit about the potential effect of mutations on DNA replication, transcription, and translation. The unit was taught to more than 2000 students in 18 courses, and student performance improved from preassessment to postassessment in every classroom. This increase occurred even though faculty varied in their instructional practices …

Resilience In Moving Water: Effects Of Turbulence On The Predatory Impact Of The Lobate Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Cornelia Jaspers, John H. Costello, Kelly R. Sutherland, Brad J. Gemmell, Kelsey N. Lucas, Jennifer Tackett, Kara Dodge, Sean P. Colin
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Despite its delicate morphology, the lobate ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi thrives in coastal ecosystems as an influential zooplankton predator. Coastal ecosystems are often characterized as energetic systems with high levels of natural turbulence in the water column. To understand how natural wind‐driven turbulence affects the feeding ecology of M. leidyi, we used a combination of approaches to quantify how naturally and laboratory generated turbulence affects the behavior, feeding processes and feeding impact of M. leidyi. Experiments using laboratory generated turbulence demonstrated that turbulence can reduce M. leidyi feeding rates on copepods and Artemia nauplii by > 50%. However, detailed feeding …

Cycads, Flying Foxes, And Brain Disease In Humans, Logan Disney
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Cycads are a group of ancient gymnosperms with a rich fossil history. While they once dominated the world’s forests, their adaptation to warm climates has now restricted them to tropical areas. They are not widely eaten by humans due to their known toxicity, but some indigenous groups of the Pacific Islands, such as the Chamorro people of Guam, have developed methods of washing the seeds for safe consumption. Cycad seeds are a common dietary item of several mammals. One such mammal, the flying fox, is considered a delicacy to several indigenous groups. In the mid-twentieth century, these groups also expressed …
The Effect Of Competition Presence On Relationship Retention Decisions, Kaycee Champion
The Effect Of Competition Presence On Relationship Retention Decisions, Kaycee Champion
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Relationships are connections between two or more people, which determine how they behave toward one another. Romantically speaking, relationships can become more complex. With the high levels of interference from people outside the relationship added to the personality traits of each individual within, romantic relationships may suffer or face difficulties over time. Mate retention behaviors are based on a variety of factors, but this study specifically focuses on the effects of threat perception in the presence of competition for females. By surveying females in a relationship, the information on attachment styles and threat perception was collected. By using a female …
Functional Analysis Of Protease Adamts 6 During Vertebrate Eye Formation, Austin Taylor
Functional Analysis Of Protease Adamts 6 During Vertebrate Eye Formation, Austin Taylor
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and epithelial sheet fusion occur during the development of many different tissues, including the vertebrate eye (Lu et al., 2011) (Pai et al., 2012). During morphogenesis of the eye, the ventral hemisphere of the developing retinal tissue forms an opening called the optic fissure which must undergo epithelial fusion (Pai et al., 2012). Failure of optic fissure fusion leads to a congenital blinding disorder called coloboma (Gregory-Evans, 2004). A long standing question pertaining to the mechanism of optic fissure fusion is exactly which ECM remodeling enzymes are actively involved in dismantling the ECM to allow for …
