Evaluating The Integration Of Chlorine Dioxide Into A Coagulation, Sedimentation, And Filtration Process Treating Surface Water, Martin Coleman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Methods of optimizing the coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration (CSF) process at a conventional surface water treatment plant (WTP) were conducted to investigate opportunities for the reduction of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursor material. The research had two primary components: (1) optimize coagulant dosage and associated operating pH and (2) investigate pretreatment oxidation with chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4). To accomplish the first component, jar tests were conducted at various pH and aluminum sulfate (alum) dosages to model current and potential treatment conditions during the CSF process at a WTP. Isopleths were developed to examine the removal efficiencies of …

Harmful Algal Bloom Mitigating Using Recycled Concrete Aggregate Coated With Fixed-Quat., Ikenna Ezeodurukwe Jan 2018

Harmful Algal Bloom Mitigating Using Recycled Concrete Aggregate Coated With Fixed-Quat., Ikenna Ezeodurukwe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human activities generate surplus nutrients which may lead to algal bloom events in water resources along with serious ecological problems and thus substantial economic losses. Particularly, harmful algal blooms (HABs) represent toxic cyanobacterial blooms which produce cyanotoxins. The primary concerns of HABs are the exposures to a wide variety of cyanotoxins via ingestion of contaminated drinking water, inhalation during recreational activities, and consumption of contaminated fish and shellfish. However, conventional physical and chemical methods are not always possible to efficiently handle these HABs events. It is urgent to develop viable and rapid solutions to control HABs in field and mitigate …

Intraprofessional Conflict Among Registered Nurses In Hospital Nursing: A Phenomenological Study Of Horizontal Violence And Bullying, Joyce A. Goff Jan 2018

Intraprofessional Conflict Among Registered Nurses In Hospital Nursing: A Phenomenological Study Of Horizontal Violence And Bullying, Joyce A. Goff

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

By the year 2025, the nursing workforce shortage will exceed 500,000 registered nurses (RN). Hospitals will primarily experience this loss. The retention of RNs is a critical issue for hospitals, and studies about RNs leaving jobs in hospital nursing are essential to addressing the workforce shortage. Limited data exists about why RNs leave hospital nursing, other than job dissatisfaction. There is limited current data on whether horizontal violence, bullying, and intraprofessional conflict between RNs influence such decisions. This qualitative phenomenological study explored RNs’ experiences of horizontal violence, bullying, and intraprofessional conflict in hospital nursing. Findings suggest behaviors such as alienation, …

Identity Reconciliation: Understanding The Relationship Between The Pursuit Of The Ideal-Self And Intrapersonal Conflict, Abdul Mack Jan 2018

Identity Reconciliation: Understanding The Relationship Between The Pursuit Of The Ideal-Self And Intrapersonal Conflict, Abdul Mack

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive responses to identity crisis can influence inner harmony, behavior, and decision making while negatively affecting interpersonal relationships. The emotions associated with identity crisis establish the conditions that lead to various forms of conflict. Identity-related conflicts are often intractable and characterized by high levels of stalemates, counterproductive responses, posturing, or one-sided resolution expectations. Furthermore, the onset of dual conflicts brought about by competing internal and external demands has a deleterious impact on conflict strategies and resolution attempts. The purpose of this study was to explored the relationship between the pursuit of the ideal self and intrapersonal conflict as a means …

What Do Organizations Learn From Conflict? A Grounded Meta-Analysis Approach To Developing An Integrated Conflict System Roadmap, Raquel Perez Jan 2018

What Do Organizations Learn From Conflict? A Grounded Meta-Analysis Approach To Developing An Integrated Conflict System Roadmap, Raquel Perez

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Organizational systems from a variety of fields and industries have begun to investigate and evaluate the skills, strategies, and lessons learned from conflict. Yet, many of the findings are isolated to their specific organizations or industries, decreasing the impact of the newly emerging knowledge. Due to the lack of interconnectedness in the fields and industries, this study poses the following research question: How do organizations develop skills and strategies to respond to internal and external conflict within systems? The purpose of this grounded meta-analysis was to discover what skills and strategies organizations learn through the process of managing conflict and …

What internal conflicts result out of living between two cultures? What does the process for making sense of cultural expectations look like? How do Latin American women living in the United States make sense of this process? Using a constructivist grounded methodology, the research reflects the …

Academically Resistant Athletes: Victims Of Aces Or Commodities Of The System, Melnee Berry Jan 2018

Academically Resistant Athletes: Victims Of Aces Or Commodities Of The System, Melnee Berry

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Fans of college sports embrace the idea of athletes playing sport and, in turn, receiving tuition scholarships that provide them an opportunity to trade athletic talent for a free education. A contradictory body of research using internal colonization theory posits that the trade of education for playing sports is not a fair exchange but is fraught with exploitation that continues to perpetuate subjugation. An accepted narrative in athletic competition is that the recruiting pipeline draws athletes from impoverished inner-city areas engaging young athletes who experience difficulties keeping up scholastically becoming academically resistant as they focus on their sport at the …

A Phenomenological Research Study On The Treatment Experience Of Opioid Addicts: Exploring The Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Conflicts That Opioid Addicts Face During The Treatment Process, Nicole Marie Ouzounian

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Opioid addiction is a physical, mental, and social issue. The insidious habits and behaviors acquired while living an addictive lifestyle are more powerful than human comprehension, and the training required to release these strongholds are extreme to say the least. Capturing the lived experiences of this process is needed to increase understanding of the development that leads to transformation from active addict to addict in recovery. This phenomenological research study on the treatment experience of opioid addicts used a qualitative approach to gain understanding of this phenomenon. For this study, 15 research participants were selected. Their ages ranged from 21 …

Radical Black Drama-As-Theory: The Black Feminist Dramatic On The Protracted Event-Horizon, Jaye Austin Williams Jan 2018

Radical Black Drama-As-Theory: The Black Feminist Dramatic On The Protracted Event-Horizon, Jaye Austin Williams

Faculty Journal Articles

In this essay, I elaborate my present project, grounded in what I call drama theory, the critical theoretical dimensions of dramatic writing, and address the deeply troubling intramural tensions across Black Studies, between those who read blackness, and black cultural production, through largely futurist, celebratory lenses; and those who apply a structural analysis to blackness as the site against, upon, and through which the world coheres its soci(et)al apparatuses and machinations. I situate myself within the latter constellation, and sample here two plays by Suzan-Lori Parks to demonstrate how I translate the analyses of antiblack violence by black feminist …

The devastating bat fungal disease, white-nose syndrome (WNS), does not appear to affect all species equally. To experimentally determine susceptibility differences between species, we exposed hibernating naïve little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) and big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) to the fungus that causes WNS, Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd). After hibernating under identical conditions, Pd lesions were significantly more prevalent and more severe in little brown myotis. This species difference in pathology correlates with susceptibility to WNS in the wild and suggests that survival is related to different host physiological responses. We observed another fungal infection, …

Who's That Knocking At My Door? Neural Bases Of Sound Source Identification, Guillaume Lemaitre, John A. Pyles, Andrea R. Halpern, Nicole Navolio, Matthew Lehet, Laurie M. Heller Jan 2018

Who's That Knocking At My Door? Neural Bases Of Sound Source Identification, Guillaume Lemaitre, John A. Pyles, Andrea R. Halpern, Nicole Navolio, Matthew Lehet, Laurie M. Heller

Faculty Journal Articles

When hearing knocking on a door, a listener typically identifies both the action (forceful and repeated impacts) and the object (a thick wooden board) causing the sound. The current work studied the neural bases of sound source identification by switching listeners' attention toward these different aspects of a set of simple sounds during functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning: participants either discriminated the action or the material that caused the sounds, or they simply discriminated meaningless scrambled versions of them. Overall, discriminating action and material elicited neural activity in a left-lateralized frontoparietal network found in other studies of sound identification, wherein …

Treatment Of Leachate Organic Matter Through Sunlight Driven Processes, Duncan Lozinski Jan 2018

Treatment Of Leachate Organic Matter Through Sunlight Driven Processes, Duncan Lozinski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to manage leachate during post-closure care (PCC) of a landfill may be increasingly difficult as leachate organic matter (LOM) becomes recalcitrant when a landfill ages, requiring advanced and costly treatment technologies. This research investigated the ability to treat LOM through sunlight driven processes, with a focus on photolysis, to provide insight to landfill owners and operators on the potential of wetlands treatment as a means for reducing long-term risks and costs associated with leachate treatment during PCC. The study was completed in eight batch tests, where leachate was exposed to natural sunlight in central Florida for a period …

Interpreting Canada's Medical Assistance In Dying Legislation, Jocelyn Downie, Jennifer A. Chandler Jan 2018

Interpreting Canada's Medical Assistance In Dying Legislation, Jocelyn Downie, Jennifer A. Chandler

Reports & Public Policy Documents

When the Canadian medical assistance in dying (MAiD) legislation came into force in June 2016, it was widely noted that the meaning of some of its key terms and phrases was unclear. For example, questions were immediately raised about the meaning of “incurable illness, disease, or disability,” “advanced state of irreversible decline in capability,” and “natural death has become reasonably foreseeable.” Interpretation challenges are not uncommon with new legislation. However, in the context of something as significant as access to MAiD and potential criminal liability for getting the meaning of the legislation wrong, these challenges must be confronted by those …

Dimensions Of Charity Versus Development: The Century-Old Debate In The Profession Of Social Work, Héctor Luis Díaz, Antonio López Peláez Jan 2018

Dimensions Of Charity Versus Development: The Century-Old Debate In The Profession Of Social Work, Héctor Luis Díaz, Antonio López Peláez

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The social work profession seeks different objectives and utilizes different methodologies and interventions in the countries in which it operates around the world. Furthermore, it operates within drastically different political, economic and cultural contexts. For these reasons, it is difficult to identify an ideal universal method of intervention. For approximately a century, social work practitioners and academicians have debated whether the profession should focus its efforts on providing charity and relief services or promoting socio-economic development and self-sufficiency. This article defines the concepts of charity and socioeconomic development and analyzes the main dimensions of this debate in an effort to deepen …

An Optimized Solid-Phase Reduction And Capture Strategy For The Study Of Reversibly-Oxidized Cysteines And Its Application To Metal Toxicity, John Andrew Hitron Jan 2018

An Optimized Solid-Phase Reduction And Capture Strategy For The Study Of Reversibly-Oxidized Cysteines And Its Application To Metal Toxicity, John Andrew Hitron

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

The reversible oxidation of cysteine by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is both a mechanism for cellular protein signaling as well as a cause of cellular injury and death through the generation of oxidative stress. The study of cysteine oxidation is complicated by the methodology currently available to isolate and enrich oxidized-cysteine containing proteins. We sought to simplify this process by reducing the time needed to process samples and reducing sample loss and contamination risk.

We accomplished this by eliminating precipitation steps needed for the protocol by (a) introducing an in-solution NEM-quenching step prior to reduction and (b) replacing soluble dithiothreitol …

Why We Can’T “Just All Get Along”: Dysfunction In The Polity And Conflict Resolution And What We Might Do About It, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 2018

Why We Can’T “Just All Get Along”: Dysfunction In The Polity And Conflict Resolution And What We Might Do About It, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Journal of Dispute Resolution

These are very troubled times. The polity is seriously divided; people who march for white supremacy and hate are called “nice and very good people” by an unhinged, but Constitutionally elected, President; relations between citizens of color and police are at a high level of hostility and distrust; Congress is unable to pass virtually any legislation; and policy differences over immigration, trade, taxation, and health care are so great that even a ruling party cannot get anything done. Perhaps the greatest challenge for our democracy now is learning how to deal with great value differences in the polity, enough so …

Increasing Alligator Snapping Turtle Head-Starting Success Through Housing Enrichment And Inoculation Of Hatchlings With Digestive Microbiota, Kristen Erin Sardina Jan 2018

Increasing Alligator Snapping Turtle Head-Starting Success Through Housing Enrichment And Inoculation Of Hatchlings With Digestive Microbiota, Kristen Erin Sardina

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Due to historic overharvest and habitat degradation, the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) has experienced population declines throughout its range. Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery in southern Oklahoma began a captive head-start program for this species in 2000 and has since released over 1,400 turtles in the region. However, there has been a recurring trend of turtles growing faster after release than while in captivity. My research sought to investigate this pattern by determining: 1) the influence of housing enrichment and housing density on juvenile growth rates and stress in indoor enclosures, and 2) the effects of supplementing hatchlings …

The “Deeming Rule”: The Fda’S Destruction Of The Vaping Industry, Lauren H. Greenberg Jan 2018

The “Deeming Rule”: The Fda’S Destruction Of The Vaping Industry, Lauren H. Greenberg

Brooklyn Law Review

The FDA has recently passed sweeping regulations, which classifies and then regulates electronic cigarettes as “tobacco products” in the same manner as traditional cigarettes. Though the agency reasons that unknowing adults and children may easily turn to e-cigarettes without fully understanding the potential health effects, there is a lack of conclusive evidence in this field to justify such a comprehensive regulatory scheme. Through the far-reaching “Deeming Rule,” e-cigarette manufacturers are forced to comply with financially burdensome and time-consuming requirements before taking most of their products to market. The channels by which the FDA proposes manufacturers and retailers gain permission from …

Setting The Table For An International Environmental Agreement: A Beginner's Guide To Negotiating Mandates, Susan Biniaz Jan 2018

Setting The Table For An International Environmental Agreement: A Beginner's Guide To Negotiating Mandates, Susan Biniaz

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

You may be an experienced negotiator of international environmental agreements. Or you may be new to the field and excited to negotiate your very first one. In both cases, you know your precedents, helped craft your government’s positions, and are anxious to get started. But wait … before you negotiate the agreement, you will need to navigate the mandate.

A mandate launches the negotiation of an international environmental instrument and sets forth its terms of reference, both procedural (such as where and when it will take place) and substantive (such as what the instrument should address). It is generally issued …
