Data from federally funded research must now be made publicly accessible and discoverable. Researchers must adhere to guidelines established by federal agencies, and universities must be prepared to demonstrate compliance with the federal mandate. At Utah State University, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies and the Merrill-Cazier Library partnered to facilitate data sharing and create an audit trail demonstrating compliance with the terms of each researcher’s award. This systematic approach uses existing resources such as the grant management system, the institutional repository (IR), and the Library online catalog. This paper describes our process and the first eight months of …

Bacterial resistance to current antibiotics is a growing problem across the globe. The CDC reported that the estimated minimum illnesses caused by antibiotic resistance in the year 2013 was over 2 million, resulting in about 23,000 deaths in the U.S. 1 In 2014, the Obama administration released an executive order mandating that research be conducted to identify solutions to the bacterial resistance problem, especially in Gram-negative bacteria. One antibiotic series that has shown some promise are the fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolones have been on the market for years, with a current reference example being moxifloxacin. Fluoroquinolones (FQs) work by targeting DNA gyrase …

Hemolytic And Non-Hemolytic Group B Streptococcus Strains’ Impact On Infection And Inflammation In Human Placental And Immune Cells, Olivia S. Harlow, Natalie Anumolu, Shannon Manning, Erica Boldenow
Summer Research
- Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonizes 10-30% of women.
- GBS remains the leading cause of infectious neonatal morbidity and mortality1
- GBS is defined as being β-hemolytic, but about 3% of strains are non-hemolytic.
- Recent data suggest that non-hemolytic strains also pose health risks to infants2.
- Previous data from our lab demonstrated that GB37 is non-hemolytic when grown on blood agar, but is hemolytic when grown in suspension with red blood cells.
New Techniques To Detect Swimmer’S Itch Parasites In Lakes, Bradley Scholten, Randall Dejong
New Techniques To Detect Swimmer’S Itch Parasites In Lakes, Bradley Scholten, Randall Dejong
Summer Research
- Swimmer’s itch is caused by parasites called avian schistosomes. The main parasite that causes swimmer’s itch is Trichobilharzia stagnicolae.
- The T. stagnicolae life cycle uses common merganser ducks (COME) and snails as hosts
- Main problem: There is no easy way to determine if a particular beach area has swimmer’s itch at a given time. Current methods require water samples and and take a long time.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the CNS that leads to physical disability, cognitive impairment, and other symptoms associated with neurological damage. MS is a T-cell mediated demyelinating disease with a male to female ratio of 1:3. The molecular mechanisms of sex differences in MS are not well understood. This sexual dimorphism is reflected in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a murine model of MS in SJL/J mice. Previous studies show sex-specific differences in immune production and response to IL-33 which promotes a protective Th2 response to EAE in male mice. We set out to understand how sexspecific cell …

Scopoletin Excited-State Proton Transfer And Excited-State Pkₐ, Hunter T. Pham, Mark Muyskens
Scopoletin Excited-State Proton Transfer And Excited-State Pkₐ, Hunter T. Pham, Mark Muyskens
Summer Research
Scopoletin is suspected to undergo excited-state proton transfer (ESPT), resulting in fluorescent emission from the anionic structure except in very low pH. Excitation and emission spectra were collected in water of varying pH and were used to determine the pKₐ of ground-state and excited-state scopoletin to be 7.6 ± 0.2 and 1.7 ± 0.2 respectively. This agrees with literature’s calculated value for the ground state [3] and the literature excited-state value for a molecule of similar structure [6]. Spectra were then collected using tetrahydrofuran as a solvent to force neutral conditions and added sodium metal to force anionic conditions. These …

The epithet conspiracy theorist can be understood as what C. Wright Mills called a "vocabulary of motive:' This vocabulary of motive is routinely used to dismiss scholars, journalists, and citizens who question, or worse yet document, the consolidation or abuse of political, economic, and cultural resources. The micropolitics of the term conspiracy theory have become so intense that grassy knoll (a term relating to belief in conspiracy theories about the assassination of President Kennedy) and other terms have become shorthand for those who on the one hand wear "tinfoil hats" to protect themselves from government mind-control rays and for those …
Evidence-Based Guidelines And Protocol Implementation In A Primary Care Clinic To Improve Chronic Asthma Care, Jo E. Cote
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The aim of this project was to pilot the implementation of evidence-based guidelines and protocols for chronic asthma care in a rural primary care clinic system. Asthma is under-diagnosed and under-treated, resulting in significant burden of disease. Achieving asthma control requires collaborative care between the patient and healthcare clinicians. Education on evidence-based guidelines was provided to healthcare clinicians. Effectiveness of education and integration of altered workflow was measured. Integration of evidence-based guidelines and protocols was demonstrated by clinicians. The results support expanding the project to the remaining five clinics in the clinic system.

Male-male competition and female mate choice may both play important roles in driving and maintaining reproductive isolation between species. When previously allopatric species come into secondary contact with each other due to introductions, they provide an opportunity to evaluate the identity and strength of reproductive isolating mechanisms. If reproductive isolation is not maintained, hybridization may occur. We examined how reproductive isolating mechanisms mediate hybridization between endemic populations of the Red River pupfish Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis and the recently introduced sheepshead minnow C. variegatus. In lab-based dominance trials, males of both species won the same number of competitions. However, male C. rubrofluviatilis …

Several studies have supported the idea that anthocyanin accumulation may be a possible protection mechanism in plants against DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV). This study explored the accumulation of anthocyanins in the adventitious root tips of Sedum wrightii using the following treatments: UVA, UVA+low UVB, and UVA+high UVB. Following exposure to UV radiation, samples were analyzed for anthocyanin accumulation using an ethanol extraction procedure. Using ELISA, additional root samples were analyzed for indicators of DNA damage: cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and pyrimidine (6-4) pyrimidone dimers (6-4 PPs). The anthocyanin concentrations were significantly higher in the UVA + high …

Graduate programs emerging in universities over recent decades support the advanced study of sustainability issues in complex socio-environmental systems. Constructing the problem-scope to address these issues requires graduate students to integrate across disciplines and synthesize the social and natural dimensions of sustainability. Graduate programs that are designed to foster inter- and transdisciplinary research acknowledge the importance of training students to use integrative research approaches. However, this training is not available in all graduate programs that support integrative research, often requiring students to seek external training opportunities. We present perspectives from a group of doctoral students with diverse disciplinary backgrounds conducting …

BACKGROUND: Classification of COPD is usually based on the severity of airflow, which may not sensitively differentiate subpopulations. Using a multiscale imaging-based cluster analysis (MICA), we aim to identify subpopulations for current smokers with COPD.
METHODS: Among the SPIROMICS subjects, we analyzed computed tomography images at total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV) of 284 current smokers. Functional variables were derived from registration of TLC and RV images, e.g. functional small airways disease (fSAD%). Structural variables were assessed at TLC images, e.g. emphysema and airway wall thickness and diameter. We employed an unsupervised method for clustering.
RESULTS: Four clusters …

This study examines the association between proximity of place of residence to preferred nightclub and substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and related problems, among a sample of 498 young adult substance users in Miami who report regular nightclub participation. Hierarchal linear models and logistic regressions were constructed to examine the impact of residential proximity to preferred nightclub on risk behaviors. Compared with participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub, participants residing further away reported higher intensities of alcohol and cocaine use (p < .01), greater condomless vaginal sex frequencies (p < .001), and more substance dependence symptoms (p < .05). Conversely, participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub had higher likelihood of arrest history (p < .05) than participants residing further away. Results suggest that participants residing further from their preferred nightclubs may be more invested in the nightclub outing and, therefore, engage in more risk behaviors.

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant toxic to humans and wildlife. Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a bioavailable compound that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in food webs. Humans are primarily exposed to MMHg from seafood consumption (Sunderland 2007), and high quantities of the neurotoxin lead to reduced neurocognitive functioning in adults and the children of exposed mothers (Cohen et al. 2005, Yokoo et al. 2003). Negative effects from MMHg accumulation on the health of humans and wildlife requires a more complete understanding of the chemistry and microbiology driving Hg methylation in both marine and freshwater systems. This work focuses on water column distribution, …
