Boitawl: Soil, Lost And Left, Bishnupriya Chowdhuri
Boitawl: Soil, Lost And Left, Bishnupriya Chowdhuri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Boitawl ("Boi"- lack, devoid of, "Tawl"- bottom/ ground/ foundation), the word in one of the Bengali dialects refers to one without a ground beneath her feet. The thesis, a hybrid collection of prose and verse including narratives and graphic vignettes, flash, fabulist and short stories, prose poems and free verse imagines the inside worlds of such un-settled existences. In the process, the pieces connect migration, memory, childhood and lost towns with fractured humans caught in between - to reveal what lies under pillars of desires, the shapes of unsaid longings and recurrent images in their dreams.

There is a great deal of evidence about the mental health implications of physical child abuse and environmental stressors, or hardships that people experience at the household and neighborhood level (e.g., neighborhood violence; economic hardship, substance abuse, or conflict among family members). Yet, studies often focus on either abuse or environmental stress, not both, or examine abuse and environmental stressors as a combined set of experiences. Less is known, therefore, about how child abuse and environmental stress might work as either distinct or interrelated risks to diminish mental health over time. In this longitudinal study, we used path analyses to …

Integrated Analysis Of The Value Of Wetland Services In Coastal Adaptation; Methodology And Case Study Of Hampton-Seabrook Estuary, New Hampshire, Paul Kirshen, Semra Aytur, David M. Burdick, Diane Foster, Tom Lippmann, Ellen Douglas, Sydney Nick, Chris Watson
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
The present impacts from coastal storms and high tides grow significantly over time due to SLR even over the relatively short period to 2060. Hydrodynamic model simulations of storm surge with and without sea level rise scenarios show that although flooding and inundation increases with increasing subtidal forcing and higher sea level, dissipation of the tide and storm surge in the estuary channel somewhat limits the maximum inundation that might otherwise be expected in the back marsh areas. The estuary is dominated by high marsh, which lies high in the intertidal zone and by 2060 it will convert to mostly …

Race: Always Complicated, Never Simple, Tarik D. Lacour
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The concept that race has evolved rather than remaining static is not well understood, both outside and within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Religion of a Different Color, W. Paul Reeve shows how the concept of race evolved from painting Mormons as nonwhite in the 19th century to “too white” by the beginning of the 21st century.

Lag-3 Mediates Acute Rejection & Memory In Mouse Transplantation, Jeffrey Mark Erfe
Lag-3 Mediates Acute Rejection & Memory In Mouse Transplantation, Jeffrey Mark Erfe
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Lymphocyte Activation Gene-3 (LAG-3) is a soluble protein and transmembrane protein receptor expressed on lymphocytes such as immunosuppressive regulatory T cells. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of LAG-3 on transplantation outcomes, specifically rejection and cellular memory response to donor antigen, by comparing graft survival and IFN-l secretion to donor antigen in C57BL/6 LAG-3-/- versus wild-type mouse recipients of DBA/2 grafts. We found that LAG-3 deletion accelerates rejection time and enhances IFN-l secretion among heart or skin graft recipients. FACS analysis of memory T cells demonstrated disproportionate increases in effector T cell subsets, consistent with a heightened rejection response. …
Mitochondrial Calcium In Diabetic Platelets: Friend Or Foe?, Zainab O. Jaji
Mitochondrial Calcium In Diabetic Platelets: Friend Or Foe?, Zainab O. Jaji
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The global burden of diabetes mellitus (DM) is projected to keep escalating with a burgeoning of the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease sequalae, which are its major cause of morbidity and mortality. Current antiplatelet therapies used for risk factor reduction have limited efficacy, as such, further investigation into mechanisms provoking platelet dysfunction is warranted. Cytosolic calcium (Ca2+) excess in DM platelets is a well-documented phenomenon in the literature, and various mechanisms have been postulated. However, the ramification of this observation on mitochondrial health has not been explored. We hypothesize that the increase in cytosolic Ca2+ will be absorbed by …

The Semicommons And Wisconsin Water Quality, David A. Strifling
The Semicommons And Wisconsin Water Quality, David A. Strifling
Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review
From the Great Lakes to pristine northern streams, Wisconsin boasts a plentiful and valuable array of water resources. Yet water stress analyses show that this natural capital is deeply threatened in a variety of ways. The pressure results primarily from human activity, ranging from general overuse to colonization by anthropogenically introduced non-native species. Some of the greatest water quality problems, however, are caused by land use practices that lead to polluted runoff from farm fields and urban settings. The onset of climate change has the potential to further exacerbate all of this. These issues, coupled with the failure of existing …

Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase And Its Therapeutic Inhibition In Cancer, George C. Prendergast, William Paul Malachowski, Arpita Mondal, Peggy Scherle, Alexander J. Muller
Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship
The tryptophan catabolic enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-1 (IDO1) has attracted enormous attention in driving cancer immunosuppression, neovascularization, and metastasis. IDO1 suppresses local CD8 + T effector cells and natural killer cells and induces CD4 + T regulatory cells (iTreg) and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC). The structurally distinct enzyme tryptophan dioxygenase (TDO) also has been implicated recently in immune escape and metastatic progression. Lastly, emerging evidence suggests that the IDO1-related enzyme IDO2 may support IDO1-mediated iTreg and contribute to B-cell inflammed states in certain cancers. IDO1 and TDO are upregulated widely in neoplastic cells but also variably in stromal, endothelial, and innate …

Investigation Of Wavenumber Calibration For Raman Spectroscopy Using A Polymer Reference, Dongyue Liu, Hugh Byrne, Luke O'Neill, Bryan M. Hennelly
Conference papers
Raman spectroscopy is an optical technique that can be used to evaluate the biomolecular composition of tissue and cell samples in a real-time and non-invasive manner. Subtle differences between datasets of spectra obtained from related cell groups can be identified using multivariate statistical algorithms. Such techniques are highly sensitive to small errors, however, and, therefore, the classification sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy can be significantly impacted by miscalibration of the optical system due to small misalignments of the optical elements and/or variation in ambient temperature. Wavenumber calibration is often achieved by recording the spectrum from a wavenumber reference standard, such as …
Nutrient Conservation Trait Responses Of Low Resource Adapted Chaparral Shrubs To Increased Resource Availability, Reina Lee Nielsen
Nutrient Conservation Trait Responses Of Low Resource Adapted Chaparral Shrubs To Increased Resource Availability, Reina Lee Nielsen
Masters Theses
Traits that increase mean nutrient retention times are essential to plant performance in low resource environments, where multiple stressors (low water and nutrients) are present. Although physiological responses to either water or nutrient stress are well understood, fewer studies have investigated the interaction of these stressors from a phylogenetically-controlled, whole-plant perspective. This research focused on three, phylogenetically-controlled pairs of shrubby evergreen species from the California chaparral that either grow on or off serpentine soils, which differ in nutrient availability. Using greenhouse and field studies, the responses of these plants to altered water and nutrient availability were evaluated. The greenhouse study …

Gender Disparities In The Association Between Socio-Demographics And Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factors Among Adults With Disabilities In Shanghai, China, Youran Zhang, Gang Chen, Qi Zhang, Jun Lu, Huijiong Yu
Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND. Non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors can co-exist with disability and cause a greater burden on the health status of adults with disabilities. A lack of egalitarian social policies in China may result in gender disparities in the NCD risk factors of adults with disabilities. However, little is known about the gender disparities in the association between socio-demographics and NCD risk factors among adults with disabilities in China; consequently, we examined this association among adults with disabilities in Shanghai, China.
METHODS. We used the health examination data of 44,896 adults with disabilities in Shanghai in 2014. Descriptive analyses and …

During their migrations, marine predators experience varying levels of protection and face many threats as they travel through multiple countries’ jurisdictions and across ocean basins. Some populations are declining rapidly. Contributing to such declines is a failure of some international agreements to ensure effective cooperation by the stakeholders responsible for managing species throughout their ranges, including in the high seas, a global commons. Here we use biologging data from marine predators to provide quantitative measures with great potential to inform local, national and international management efforts in the Pacific Ocean. We synthesized a large tracking data set to show how …

Preparedness Of School Psychologists To Provide Services For Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Lauren Mckenzie Blevins
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Children who survive cancer face many challenges when reintegrating into the school system. School psychologists are among the school support professionals who may aid in providing support and identifying appropriate interventions and accommodations for the academic and mental health needs of these students. This study identifies whether school psychologists in West Virginia perceive themselves to be adequately prepared to assist students who have survived cancer upon returning to school. A survey containing fourteen questions regarding the individual’s experience, training, and knowledge was distributed to school psychologists in attendance at the Fall 2016 West Virginia School Psychologists’ Association conference. Of the …

Environmental Effects On Drosophila Brain Development And Learning, Xia Wang, Amei Amei, J. Steven De Belle, Stephen P. Roberts
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Brain development and behavior are sensitive to a variety of environmental influences including social interactions and physicochemical stressors. Sensory input in situ is a mosaic of both enrichment and stress, yet little is known about how multiple environmental factors interact to affect brain anatomical structures, circuits and cognitive function. In this study, we addressed these issues by testing the individual and combined effects of sub-adult thermal stress, larval density and early-adult living spatial enrichment on brain anatomy and olfactory associative learning in adult Drosophila melanogaster. In response to heat stress, the mushroom bodies (MBs) were the most volumetrically impaired among …
Cephalometric Analysis Of Growth And Treatment With The Structural Technique: A Review Of Its Background And Clinical Application, Ib Leth Nielsen
Cephalometric Analysis Of Growth And Treatment With The Structural Technique: A Review Of Its Background And Clinical Application, Ib Leth Nielsen
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
The aim of this review is to provide the fundamental basis and scientific evidence for the so-called “structural technique.” In this article we will discuss the benefits and challenges of this technique as well as present and compare it to the so-called “best fit” technique. Furthermore, we will introduce the three parts of the analysis, most commonly used for evaluation of growth and treatment changes. The “structural technique” developed by Professor Arne Björk and his associate Dr. Vibeke Skieller is the result of their longitudinal studies using metallic implants as biological markers. These studies showed that most of the information …
The Digital Catechism: Confirmation For A Digital World, James Mueller
The Digital Catechism: Confirmation For A Digital World, James Mueller
Doctor of Ministry
Faith education and formation is important to every Lutheran pastor. Our denomination was born with a love for catechesis. Of all the rituals that remained after the split of the Western church, Confirmation might be the most treasured among churches. Unfortunately, for many pastors who have taught Lutheran Confirmation over their careers they have never felt more disconnected from their students. Their hearts are completely invested in catechesis but their methods do not produce effective results. Though they search more thoroughly than ever to find the right curriculum, nothing seems to work. We know that parents wonder why their children …

Using Dialogue To Interrupt Legacies Of Exclusion, Incite Hope, Invite Change, And Increase Levels Of Awareness At Predominantly White Institutions With Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Rhetoric, Amanda Meise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation questions how a predominantly white institution (PWI) could infuse dialogue to aid the implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and invite institutional change. There has been an increased spotlight on racial tensions permeating predominantly white campuses with DEI initiatives; higher education scholars have identified several factors that prevent institutions from fostering inclusive spaces. This research addresses three specific hurdles for PWIs implementing DEI initiatives: (1) social amnesia characterized by romanticized versions of history; (2) a discontinuity between professed values and the goals of DEI initiatives with policy, structure, and experience; and (3) low awareness of privilege …

Symmetry Identified In 2-Dimensional Artwork Compositions Using Visuospatial Ability, Theresa Ferg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At the John Langdon Down Foundation A.C. in the La Escuela Mexicana de Arte Down school in Mexico City D.F., Mexico, art students with Trisomy 21 display the use of a mathematical construct in the painting compositions of their artworks. The mathematical construct is a type of symmetry and it carries a positive affect. This is important because there have been no studies that have investigated the use of the symmetry in the artwork compositions of persons with Down syndrome. The geometric construction of the artwork compositions follows the artistic principle of the Rule of Three and the division of …
