How Blue Are Your Buttons? An Experiment In Bee Color Perception And Pollinator Preference, Samantha Pollet Jan 2018

How Blue Are Your Buttons? An Experiment In Bee Color Perception And Pollinator Preference, Samantha Pollet

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

My thesis research focuses on the importance of flower color in relation to pollinator preferences. I was inspired to carry out this ecological field experiment to learn more about bee vision patterns as well as have the experience of conducting my own research outdoors. Experimental trials were conducted on the LIU Post campus to determine whether bees are more attracted to pink or blue Bachelors Buttons (Centaurea cyanus). While we determined that there was a significant difference between interactions with pink and blue flowers, future researchers must test a larger population size of flowers to be sure of this trend …

Art Therapy Interventions That Facilitate Non-Verbal Expressions And How Art Therapy Can Improve Communication For Children With Autism, Rachel Piliere Jan 2018

Art Therapy Interventions That Facilitate Non-Verbal Expressions And How Art Therapy Can Improve Communication For Children With Autism, Rachel Piliere

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Autism prevalence in America has increased rapidly over the years and numerous research studies have been conducted to measure the benefits of art therapy practice within this community. Advances in the mental health field have been also made to help offer improved treatment. Art therapy uses the process of engaging in artmaking with various mediums to make products that can be used in both assessment and treatment. The art can serve as a reflection of a person’s development, abilities and personalities. In this paper, the literature review will cover: Autism, communication, available treatments, and art therapy. The research methodology employed …

The Effects Of Preexisting Disease Or Illness On Circadian Rhythm, Christina Ayvas Jan 2018

The Effects Of Preexisting Disease Or Illness On Circadian Rhythm, Christina Ayvas

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

This thesis will investigate the effect that Alzheimer’s disease, blindness, cancer, and Parkinson’s disease have on natural circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the biological cycles within our bodies that repeat themselves which can be observed in correspondence to a relative time frame of 24 hours. These cycles can be influenced by a wide variety of factors, both internal and external, such as the daily transitions between daylight and nightfall, an individual's diet or hunger tendencies, and the daily number of hours of sleep that a person gets. Should any of these cycles become disrupted, the result may be a deterioration …

Happiness In Relation To Altruistic Intentionality And Equity Theory, Burcu Altintas Jan 2018

Happiness In Relation To Altruistic Intentionality And Equity Theory, Burcu Altintas

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

When it comes to the pursuit of happiness, there are many different speculations and theories on how it may be obtained. Pop-culture places a high belief in the idea that happiness lies within the focus of oneself and of people’s individualized needs. Another commonly held idea states that happiness lies within spending hard earned money on material items. However, within psychology, countless studies have disproven this pop-culture belief and now there is evidence that demonstrates the negative relationship that materialism has on life satisfaction (Roberts, Tsang, & Manolis, 2015). On the other hand, research on prosocial spending is on the …

Examining Latina/O Students’ Experiences Of Injustice: Latcrit Insights From A Texas High School, Kristy Cooper Stein, James Wright, Elizabeth Gil, Andrew Miness, Dion Ginanto Jan 2018

Examining Latina/O Students’ Experiences Of Injustice: Latcrit Insights From A Texas High School, Kristy Cooper Stein, James Wright, Elizabeth Gil, Andrew Miness, Dion Ginanto

Administration and Instructional Leadership Faculty Publications

We used Latina/Latino Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) to re-analyze survey and interview data from earlier research in which we found Latina/o students reported less positive experiences than other students in this high school. We found racial injustice in class enrollments, in students’ experiences with stereotypes and prejudice, in student-teacher relationships, and in school policies and norms. LatCrit principles illustrate interconnections among racism, interest convergence, and colorblindness that create racial injustice for Latinas/os. We argue that counterstorytelling could emerge to resist that injustice and that educators must understand how racism functions in their schools and interrogate relevant policies and norms.

Rural Sense: Value, Heritage, And Sensory Landscapes: Developing A Design-Oriented Approach To Mapping For Healthier Landscapes, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Lily Díaz-Kommonen Jan 2018

Rural Sense: Value, Heritage, And Sensory Landscapes: Developing A Design-Oriented Approach To Mapping For Healthier Landscapes, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Lily Díaz-Kommonen

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Landscape design needs a novel value system centred on human experience of the landscape rather than simply on economic value. Design-oriented research allows us to shift the focus from mechanistic paradigms towards new sense-making approaches that value both the sensual and the cognitive in human experience. To move in this direction, we investigate cultural and natural aspects of sensory experience in rural landscapes, arguing that: (1) rural (non-urban) regions offer diverse sensory experiences for optimising human health; and (2) spatial interconnectedness between rural and urban areas means that healthy rural regions are critical for urban development. Our key argument is …

Understanding The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Men’S Risk Behavior: Protocol For A Mixed-Methods Study, Martin J. Downing Jr., Dominique Brown, Jeffrey Steen, Ellen Benoit Jan 2018

Understanding The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Men’S Risk Behavior: Protocol For A Mixed-Methods Study, Martin J. Downing Jr., Dominique Brown, Jeffrey Steen, Ellen Benoit

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) remains a critical public health issue among black and Latino men who have sex with men (MSM), as it is associated with multiple negative outcomes including substance misuse, poor mental health, revictimization, and high-risk sexual behavior. Most CSA research with MSM relies on quantitative assessment that often precludes consideration of cultural variations in how formative sexual experiences are understood and is based on inconsistent or overly restrictive definitions of abuse, and therefore may fail to detect certain abusive experiences (eg, those involving female perpetrators), which can have harmful health consequences if they remain unrecognized. …

The prevalence of edentulism is common worldwide. While improvements in access to healthcare and dental care are reducing the prevalence rate of edentulism, the rapidly growing number of elderly as a percent of the global population will sustain a need for denture therapy for the foreseeable future. While denture use has positive impacts on the quality of life, their use is associated with some problems and risks. Denture stomatitis, a chronic infection-related inflammatory disorder of the oral mucosa, is extremely common and has been reported to occur in up to two-thirds of denture wearers. Importantly, epidemiology studies have shown edentulism …

Music, Myth And Motherland: Culturally Centered Music & Imagery, Sangeeta Swamy Jan 2018

Music, Myth And Motherland: Culturally Centered Music & Imagery, Sangeeta Swamy

Music Faculty Publications

This study assessed ethnic identity in adults of Indian origin through Culturally Centered Music & Imagery (CCMI), a music-centered, psychotherapeutic technique that emphasizes socio-cultural context, identity and meaning. The purpose was to examine how participants’ native music, in the context of CCMI, could evoke identity-based imagery and assess ethnic identity in a globalized context. Five cisgender Indian men and women from Hindu backgrounds participated in one CCMI session each, including an interview and follow up discussions. The qualitative methodology of portraiture (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 1997) was used in this study. The results reveal how CCMI can access the cultural and ethnic unconscious, …

All Talk And No Action? Racial Differences In College Behaviors And Attendance, Mary Kate Blake Jan 2018

All Talk And No Action? Racial Differences In College Behaviors And Attendance, Mary Kate Blake

Sociology Faculty Publications

According to the influential “oppositional culture” account, we should expect black students as a group to be less likely to engage in school than their white counterparts because they are more likely to believe and act in opposition to academics. In contrast to this prediction, qualitative and quantitative researchers have almost uniformly deduced that black students hold similar or higher educational values, attitudes, and expectations as compared with whites. I pull from the rich literature on racial differences in educational attitudes and expectations to posit that instead of black students shirking education, black students are actually more likely to act …

The goal of the “Keeping Data Science Broad” series of webinars and workshops was to garner community input into pathways for keeping data science education broadly inclusive across sectors, institutions, and populations. Input was collected from data science programs across the nation, either traditional or alternative, and from a range of institution types including community colleges, minority-led and minority-serving institutions, liberal arts colleges, tribal colleges, universities, and industry partners. The series consisted of two webinars (August 2017 and September 2017) leading up to a workshop (November 2017) exploring the future of data science education and workforce at institutions of higher …

Determining Potential Risk Areas For Minnesota Water Features, Mariel R. Ferragamo Jan 2018

Determining Potential Risk Areas For Minnesota Water Features, Mariel R. Ferragamo

Atlas of Maine

There are many important water features in Minnesota, but some are under potential threat due to the increase in agricultural pollution of air and groundwater, and infiltration of aquatic invasive species (AIS) (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, 2018). This study analyzes these risk factors and the existing biodiversity of Minnesota’s water sources to identify potential high risk water features. Using a model that is scaled from 0-24 (low to high risk) it was discovered that over 95% of all water features have some level of threat regarding their natural state, while 15% are at a high risk of invasive species infiltration …
