Multi-Metric Conservation Assessment For The Imperiled Clinch Dace, Michael James Moore, Donald J. Orth, Eric M. Hallerman
Multi-Metric Conservation Assessment For The Imperiled Clinch Dace, Michael James Moore, Donald J. Orth, Eric M. Hallerman
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
Planning frameworks allow managers to spatially prioritize actions to promote species conservation. Traditional aquatic conservation planning frameworks are often organized at the ecological community or ecosystem level, which often neglect imperiled taxa occupying species-poor assemblages. In this study, we develop a multi-metric conservation assessment for the 15 geographically distinct candidate conservation areas (CCAs) occupied by the imperiled Clinch Dace (Chrosomus sp. cf. saylori). Clinch Dace habitat is threatened by anthropogenic landscape alterations, especially for coal mining and timber harvest. Our framework used four metrics to assess the conservation value of each subpopulation of Clinch Dace namely: “habitat …

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Non‐native ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), especially Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) and Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford), are destructive wood‐boring pests of trees in ornamental nurseries and tree fruit orchards. Previous studies have demonstrated the adults are repelled by verbenone and strongly attracted to ethanol. We tested a “push–pull” semiochemical strategy in Ohio, Virginia and Mississippi using verbenone emitters to “push” beetles away from vulnerable trees and ethanol lures to “pull” them into annihilative traps. Container‐grown trees were flood‐stressed to induce ambrosia beetle attacks and then deployed in the presence or absence of verbenone emitters and a perimeter of ethanol‐baited interception …

The Desensitizing Role Of Media Violence And Emotion Dysregulation In Emotional And Behavioral Responses To A Violent Game, Suji Park
Doctoral Dissertations
Previous video game research has not focused on personality variables that may result in variations within aggression after playing a violent game as much. This study is to investigate the role of emotion dysregulation, trait empathy, and previous exposure to violent media in explaining the effects of game play on emotional and behavioral responses, including immersion, guilt, enjoyment, and physically aggressive intentions. In addition, this study examines potential links among violent media use and psychological variables: previous violent TV viewing, previous violent game play, emotion dysregulation, and empathy. The theoretical explanation of the General Aggression Model—specifically, desensitization effects of media …

Near-Infrared Photoluminescence And Electrochemiluminescence From An Exceptionally Simple Boron Difluoride Formazanate Dye, Ryan R. Maar, Ruizhong Zhang, David G. Stephens, Zhifeng Ding, Joe Gilroy
Chemistry Publications
Electrochemiluminescence involves the generation of light via electrochemical reactions and has recently shown utility for single-cell imaging. To further develop this novel imaging platform, it is necessary to produce readily available dyes that photoluminesce and electrochemiluminesce in the near-infrared region to limit absorption by biological tissue. To address this need, we prepared a boron difluoride formazanate dye that exhibits near-infrared photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence in two straightforward synthetic steps. Examination of its solid-state structure suggests that the N-aryl substituents have significant quinoidal character, which narrows the S1-S0 energy gap and leads to near-infrared absorption and photoluminescence. Electrochemical …

It is often hypothesized that intra-sexual competition accelerates actuarial senescence, or the increase in mortality rates with age. However, an alternative hypothesis is that parental investment is more important to determining senescence rates. We used a unique model system, the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), to study variation in actuarial senescence. In this species, genetically determined morphs display discrete mating strategies and disassortative pairing, providing an excellent opportunity to test the predictions of the above hypotheses. Compared to tan-striped males, white-striped males are more polygynous and aggressive, and less parental. Tan-striped females receive less parental support, and invest more into parental …

Past changes in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (PCO2) have had a major impact on earth system dynamics; yet, reconstructing secular trends of past PCO2 remains a prevalent challenge in paleoclimate studies. The current long-term PCO2reconstructions rely largely on the compilation of many different proxies, often with discrepancies among proxies, particularly for periods older than 100 million years (Ma). Here, we reconstructed Phanerozoic PCO2 from a single proxy: the stable carbon isotopic fractionation associated with photosynthesis (Ɛp) that increases as PCO2 increases. This concept has been widely applied to alkenones, but here, we …

Systemic Oxytocin Administration Alters Mesolimbic Dopamine Relase, Mary Kathlyn Estes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Growing research indicates oxytocin may be involved in relieving anxiety and attenuating the rewarding effects of psychostimulants. The present study investigated the effects of subchronic oxytocin treatments on mesolimbic dopamine transmission in areas associated with anxiety (amygdala) and addiction (nucleus accumbens, NAc). Using in vivo fixed potential amperometry, stimulation-evoked dopamine release was recorded either in the amygdala or NAc in oxytocin pretreated mice. During dopamine recordings, mice received a drug challenge of either oxytocin, the dopamine reuptake blocker nomifensine (psychostimulant), or saline. In the amygdala, dopamine release was decreased following the oxytocin challenge but only in oxytocin pretreated mice. In …
