Guest Species: Rethinking Our Approach To Biodiversity In The Anthropocene, Karrigan Börk Feb 2018

Guest Species: Rethinking Our Approach To Biodiversity In The Anthropocene, Karrigan Börk

Utah Law Review

Western environmental law rests on an outdated philosophy that only fully “natural” places, species, and ecosystems should receive full protection, while human influenced places, species, and ecosystems are lesser habitats not worthy of full-throated protection. As we move into the Anthropocene—a dawning geologic age marked by the emergence of humanity as the dominant force shaping the natural world—this simplistic view loses its power to guide our decisionmaking. In a world where more than 75% of ice free land shows evidence of human alteration, if anthropogenic species, places, or ecosystems are not worth protecting, then there simply is not enough left …

Backyard Beekeeping In The Beehive State: Salt Lake City’S Beekeeping Regulations, Nuisance Concerns, And The Legal Status Of Honey Bees, Robert T. Moriarty Feb 2018

Backyard Beekeeping In The Beehive State: Salt Lake City’S Beekeeping Regulations, Nuisance Concerns, And The Legal Status Of Honey Bees, Robert T. Moriarty

Utah Law Review

Recognizing the increasing popularity of urban beekeeping and the vital role that bees play in the ecosystem, the Salt Lake City Council has acted to allow keeping bees within city limits. To ensure that bees would not present a significant nuisance, the council implemented a simple set of guidelines to regulate the practice. While the Ordinance is an excellent first step that effectively addresses most of the sources of nuisance associated with honey bees, it would be wise to reassess its provisions now that it has been in place for nearly eight years. Perhaps a survey of complaints about urban …

Faculty Publications

The synthesis of a fully degradable, bio-based, sustained release, pro-antimicrobial polymer network comprised of degradable acetals (PANDA) is reported. The active antimicrobial agent – p-anisaldehyde (pA) (an extract from star anise) – was converted into a UV curable acetal containing pro-antimicrobial monomer and subsequently photopolymerized into a homogenous thiol-ene network. Under neutral to acidic conditions (pH < 8), the PANDAs undergo surface erosion and exhibit sustained release of pA over 38 days. The release of pA from PANDAs was shown to be effective against both bacterial and fungal pathogens. From a combination of confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, we observed that the released pA disrupts the cell membrane. Additionally, we demonstrated that PANDAs have minimal cytotoxicity towards both epithelial cells and macrophages. Although a model platform, these results point to promising pathways for the design of fully degradable sustained-release antimicrobial systems with potential applications in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, household/personal care, and food industries.

Cancer remains the second major cause of death in the world. Thus, there is a pressing need to identify potential synthetic route for the development of novel anticancer agents which will serve as lead compounds to effectively combat this life-threatening epidemic. Pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepines (PBDs) have sparked a great interest as lead compounds because of their cancerostatic and anti-infective properties. The twisted molecular structure of PBD analogs provides both helical and chiral elements. In an effort to expand novel PBDs that interact with the key exocyclic amino group of the DNA-guanine base, we hypothesized that construction of a fused cyclic active system, …

Investigation Of Cry3bb1 Resistance And Intoxication In Western Corn Rootworm By Rna Sequencing, Leslie Catherine Rault, Blair D. Siegfried, Aaron J. Gassmann, Haichuan Wang, Gary J. Brewer, Nicholas J. Miller

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The western corn rootworm (WCR) Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte is a major pest of corn that has evolved resistance to transgenic maize that produces insecticidal Cry toxins. The specific mode of action of Cry3Bb1 and mechanism of resistance in WCR are unknown. This study compared gene expression between Cry3Bb1-susceptible and Cry3Bb1-resistant WCR neonates, in the presence and absence of Cry3Bb1. RNA-Seq data were analyzed to identify differentially expressed transcripts between strains of WCR, providing candidate transcripts for resistance to Cry3Bb1. Constitutive and Cry3Bb1-induced differences between strains caused the differential expression of 608 transcripts after 8 hr. Differentially expressed transcripts between …

Latent ;Toxoplasma Gondii; Infection Moderates The Association Between The C677t Mthfr Polymorphism And Cognitive Function In U.S. Adults, Andrew Nathan Berrett Feb 2018

Latent ;Toxoplasma Gondii; Infection Moderates The Association Between The C677t Mthfr Polymorphism And Cognitive Function In U.S. Adults, Andrew Nathan Berrett

Theses and Dissertations

Sufficient blood concentrations of folate and the products from its metabolism arenecessary for several cellular functions. The C677T MTHFR polymorphism, present in over halfof the U.S. population, reduces the efficiency of folate metabolism and has been linked to theonset of multiple psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. The intracellular parasiteToxoplasma gondii can infect the human brain and is associated with increased prevalence ofpsychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. In vitro studies have found that Toxoplasma gondiimay salvage unmetabolized folate from host cells. Since the C677T MTHFR polymorphism andinfection by Toxoplasma gondii both affect folate metabolism or availability, I used data fromthe third …

Objective

Identify determinants of plasma adropin concentrations, a secreted peptide translated from the Energy Homeostasis Associated (ENHO) gene linked to metabolic control and vascular function.

Methods

Associations between plasma adropin concentrations, demographics (sex, age, BMI) and circulating biomarkers of lipid and glucose metabolism were assessed in plasma obtained after an overnight fast in humans. The regulation of adropin expression was then assessed in silico, in cultured human cells, and in animal models.

Results

In humans, plasma adropin concentrations are inversely related to atherogenic LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in men (n = 349), but not in women (n = …

Zanca, Denis Shor, Nicholas Paleologos, Amber A. Alliger, Maria E. Figueiredo-Pereira, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

Methamphetamine (MA) is an addictive drug with neurotoxic effects on the brain producing cognitive impairment and increasing the risk for neurodegenerative disease. Research has focused largely on examining the neurochemical and behavioral deficits induced by injecting relatively high doses of MA [30 mg/kg of body weight (bw)] identifying the upper limits of MA-induced neurotoxicity. Accordingly, we have developed an appetitive mouse model of voluntary oral MA administration (VOMA) based on the consumption of a palatable sweetened oatmeal mash containing a known amount of MA. This VOMA model is useful for determining the lower limits necessary to produce neurotoxicity in the …

Mute Swans, David R. Marks Feb 2018

Mute Swans, David R. Marks

Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series

Mute swans (Cygnus olor) are an invasive species originally brought to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for ornamental ponds and lakes, zoos and aviculture collections. Original populations were located in northeastern states along the Hudson Valley but have since expanded to several Midwestern states and portions of the western U.S. and Canada. Mute swan damage includes competing with native waterfowl, destroying native plants, spreading disease, and colliding with aircraft. They are also considered a nuisance in some areas due to their abundant fecal droppings and aggressiveness towards people.

Mute swans can impact …

Wilayah Potensi Ikan Pelagis Pada Variasi Kejadian Enso Dan Normal Di Selat Sunda, Yulianti Nurkhairan, Supriatna Supriatna, Dewi Susiloningtyas

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

Indonesia's geographical location resulted in the fisheries in the Sunda Strait also affected by global climate dynamics. One of them is the ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean that affects the seasons and marine waters in Indonesia. The fishery in the Sunda Strait has a commodity of pelagic fish where potential area can be estimated from oceanographic parameters such as sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration in marine waters. The dynamics of the spatial and temporal parameter of oceanography due to the variation of ENSO phenomena can be identified from Aqua satellite images carrying the MODIS …

Coleopteran Communities Associated With Forests Invaded By Emerald Ash Borer, Matthew B. Savage, Lynne K. Rieske Feb 2018

Coleopteran Communities Associated With Forests Invaded By Emerald Ash Borer, Matthew B. Savage, Lynne K. Rieske

Entomology Faculty Publications

Extensive ash mortality caused by the non-native emerald ash borer alters canopy structure and creates inputs of coarse woody debris as dead and dying ash fall to the forest floor; this affects habitat heterogeneity; resource availability; and exposure to predation and parasitism. As EAB-induced (emerald ash borer-induced) disturbance progresses the native arthropod associates of these forests may be irreversibly altered through loss of habitat; changing abiotic conditions and altered trophic interactions. We documented coleopteran communities associated with EAB-disturbed forests in a one-year study to evaluate the nature of these changes. Arthropods were collected via ethanol-baited traps on five sites with …

Impact Of Direct Acting Antivirals On Occurrence And Recurrence Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Biologically Plausible Or An Epiphenomenon?, Amna Subhan Butt, Fatima Sharif, Shahab Abid

Section of Gastroenterology

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is the most common cause of HCC in many European countries, Japan and Pakistan. Introduction of the new direct acting antivirals (DAAs) has revolutionized the management of HCV worldwide, with high rates of sustained virologic response in patients who could not have tolerated the previous interferon based treatments. However, recently there have been reports raising caution about the long term effects of DAAs, particularly a possible increased risk of HCC. Therefore this review explores the current molecular studies as well as clinical …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Temperature is widely regarded as a major driver of species richness, but the mechanisms are debated. Niche theory suggests temperature may affect richness by filtering traits and species in colder habitats while promoting specialization in warmer ones. However, tests of this theory are rare because niche dimensions are challenging to quantify along broad thermal gradients. Here, we use individual-level trait data from a long-term monitoring network spanning a large geographic extent to test niche-based theory of community assembly in small mammals. We examined variation in body size among 23 communities of North American rodents sampled across the National Ecological Observatory …

Airborne measurements of meteorological, aerosol, and stratocumulus cloud properties have been harmonized from six field campaigns during July-August months between 2005 and 2016 off the California coast. A consistent set of core instruments was deployed on the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely- Piloted Aircraft Studies Twin Otter for 113 flight days, amounting to 514 flight hours. A unique aspect of the compiled data set is detailed measurements of aerosol microphysical properties (size distribution, composition, bioaerosol detection, hygroscopicity, optical), cloud water composition, and different sampling inlets to distinguish between clear air aerosol, interstitial in-cloud aerosol, and droplet residual particles in cloud. Measurements …

Light Regulates The Rubylation Levels Of Individual Cullin Proteins In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Matthew J. Christians, Aron Rottier, Carly Wiersma

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

In plants, the small protein related to ubiquitin (RUB) modifies cullin (CUL) proteins in ubiquitin E3 ligases to allow for efficient transfer of ubiquitin to substrate proteins for degradation by the 26S proteasome. At the molecular level, the conjugation of RUB to individual CUL proteins is transient in nature, which aids in the stability of the cullins and adaptor proteins. Many changes in cellular processes occur within the plant upon exposure to light, including well-documented changes in the stability of individual proteins. However, overall activity of E3 ligases between dark- and light-grown seedlings has not been assessed in plants. In …
