From Traditional Neural Networks To Deep Learning: Towards Mathematical Foundations Of Empirical Successes, Vladik Kreinovich Feb 2018

From Traditional Neural Networks To Deep Learning: Towards Mathematical Foundations Of Empirical Successes, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

How do we make computers think? To make machines that fly, it is reasonable to look at the creatures that know how to fly: the birds. To make computers think, it is reasonable to analyze how we think -- this is the main origin of neural networks. At first, one of the main motivations was speed -- since even with slow biological neurons, we often process information fast. The need for speed motivated traditional 3-layer neural networks. At present, computer speed is rarely a problem, but accuracy is -- this motivated deep learning. In this paper, we concentrate on the …

Why Learning Has Aha-Moments And Why We Should Also Reward Effort, Not Just Results, Gerargo Uranga, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditionally, in machine learning, the quality of the result improves steadily with time (usually slowly but still steadily). However, as we start applying reinforcement learning techniques to solve complex tasks -- such as teaching a computer to play a complex game like Go -- we often encounter a situation in which for a long time, then is no improvement, and then suddenly, the system's efficiency jumps almost to its maximum. A similar phenomenon occurs in human learning, where it is known as the aha-moment. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this phenomenon, and show that this explanation …

In the terrestrial ecosystem, plant–microbe symbiotic associations are ecologically and economically important processes. To better understand these associations at structural and functional levels, different molecular and biochemical tools are applied. In this study, we have constructed a suite of vectors that incorporates several new elements into the rhizosphere stable, broad-host vector pME6031. The new vectors are useful for studies requiring multi-color tagging and visualization of plant-associated, Gram-negative bacterial strains such as Pseudomonas plant growth promotion and biocontrol strains. A number of genetic elements, including constitutive promoters and signal peptides that target secretion to the periplasm, have been evaluated. Several next …

Section of Neurosurgery

Robotic surgery has been the forte of minimally invasive stereo-tactic procedures for some decades now. Ongoing advancements and evolutionary developments require substantial evidence to build the consensus about its efficacy in the field of neurosurgery. Main obstacle in obtaining successful results in neurosurgery is fine neural structures and other anatomical limitations. Currently, human rationalisation and robotic precision works in symbiosis to provide improved results. We reviewed the current data about recent interventions. Robots are capable of providing virtual data, superior spatial resolution and geometric accuracy, superior dexterity, faster manoeuvring and non-fatigability with steady motion. Robotic surgery also allows simulation of …

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound: Past, Present, And Future In Neurosurgery, Syed A. Quadri,, Muhammad Waqas, Inamullah Khan, Muhammad Adnan Khan, Sajid S. Suriya, Mudassir Farooqui, Brian Fiani Feb 2018

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound: Past, Present, And Future In Neurosurgery, Syed A. Quadri,, Muhammad Waqas, Inamullah Khan, Muhammad Adnan Khan, Sajid S. Suriya, Mudassir Farooqui, Brian Fiani

Section of Neurosurgery

Since Lynn and colleagues first described the use of focused ultrasound (FUS) waves for intracranial ablation in 1942, many strides have been made toward the treatment of several brain pathologies using this novel technology. In the modern era of minimal invasiveness, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) promises therapeutic utility for multiple neurosurgical applications, including treatment of tumors, stroke, epilepsy, and functional disorders. Although the use of HIFU as a potential therapeutic modality in the brain has been under study for several decades, relatively few neuroscientists, neurologists, or even neurosurgeons are familiar with it. In this extensive review, the authors intend to …

Interspecific Interactions May Influence Reef Fish Management Strategies In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michelle D. Masi, Cameron H. Ainsworth, I. C. Kaplan, M. J. Schirripa Feb 2018

Interspecific Interactions May Influence Reef Fish Management Strategies In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michelle D. Masi, Cameron H. Ainsworth, I. C. Kaplan, M. J. Schirripa

Marine Science Faculty Publications

This study highlights the importance of interspecific interactions among marine organisms and the effect that these trophic interactions have on the development of effective, adaptive management strategies for reef fishes in the Gulf of Mexico. To represent the spatially and temporally constrained, interspecific interactions among reef fishes we employ Atlantis (a spatially explicit, biogeochemical ecosystem model) as our simulation tool. Within Atlantis, we evaluate the performance of a two‐point harvest control rule (HCR) that adaptively increases fishing mortality linearly between upper and lower biomass thresholds based on the available biomass of the stocks. This example demonstrated the use of a …
