Manuscript Preparation Rules And Guidelines, February 2018

Insecta Mundi

Insecta Mundi is an ongoing experiment in publishing. Our goal is to produce taxonomic publications that are free for authors (no page charges) and openly accessible for users (see Skelley and Thomas 2007). To accomplish this, we require the participation of authors in the publication process. Authors are required to make their manuscripts publishable by our standards prior to submission. Authors unwilling or unable to follow the guidelines should ask friends for help or consider paying to have their article published in journals which charge for the services.

The purposes for these rules and guidelines are to ensure consistency in …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

In this studies, three fatty acyl derivatives of CGKRK homing peptides were coupled successfully to chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) using sulfosuccinimidyl-4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate sodium salt (sulfo-SMCC). The COS-SMCC was prepared by direct coupling between COS and sulfo-SMCC in PBS (pH 7.5) at RT for 48 h. The structure of COS-SMCC and the three fatty acyl-CGKRK-SMCC-COS conjugates were characterized by FT-IR, 13C NMR, and SEM. The ability of three conjugates to condense siRNA into nanosized polyplexes and their efficacy in protecting siRNA from serum nucleases degradation were investigated. Among the investigated derivatives, S-CGKRK-COS showed higher siRNA binding affinity as compared to …

Aerobic Method For The Synthesis Of Nearly Size-Monodisperse Bismuth Nanoparticles From A Redox Non-Innocent Precursor, Hayden Winter, Elena Christopher-Allison, Anna L. Brown, Andrea M. Goforth

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Herein, we report an aerobic synthesis method to produce bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs) with average diameters in the range 40-80 nm using commercially available bismuth triiodide (BiI3) as starting material; the method uses only readily available chemicals and conventional laboratory equipment. Furthermore, size data from replicates of the synthesis under standard reaction conditions indicate that this method is highly reproducible in achieving Bi NP populations with low standard deviations in the mean diameters. We also investigated the mechanism of the reaction, which we determined results from the reduction of a soluble alkylammonium iodobismuthate precursor species formed in situ …

Western North American Naturalist

During the last century, populations of the endangered Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) have declined in the Colorado River Basin. Dramatic changes in habitat resulting from altered flow regimes and the presence of nonnative fishes were likely major factors contributing to this decline. Since 1996, studies in Lake Mead have resulted in the discovery of 4 areas where wild Razorback Suckers were spawning; all of these locations have tributary or wastewater inflows. Since the Lake Mead Razorback Sucker population has persisted near these prominent inflow areas, we hypothesize that complex inflow areas with vegetative cover and turbidity provide important …

Inheritance Of Mesotrione Resistance In An Amaranthus Tuberculatus (Var. Rudis) Population From Nebraska, Usa, Maxwel C. Oliveira, Todd A. Gaines, Amit J. Jhala, Stevan Z. Knezevic

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A population of Amaranthus tuberculatus (var. rudis) evolved resistance to 4- hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor herbicides (mesotrione, tembotrione, and topramezone) in Nebraska. The level of resistance was the highest to mesotrione, and the mechanism of resistance in this population is metabolism-based likely via cytochrome P450 enzymes. The increasing number of weeds resistant to herbicides warrants studies on the ecology and evolutionary factors contributing for resistance evolution, including inheritance of resistance traits. In this study, we investigated the genetic control of mesotrione resistance in an A. tuberculatus population from Nebraska, USA. Results showed that reciprocal crosses in the F1 families exhibited …

The Effect Of Grapefruit Intake On Endogenous Serum Estrogen Levels In Postmenopausal Women, Kristine R. Monroe, Frank Z. Stanczyk, Kathleen Hill-Besinque, Malcolm C. Pike

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Although grapefruit intake leads to elevated serum estrogen levels when hormones are taken orally, there are no published data on the effect on endogenous levels. We conducted a pilot dietary intervention study among healthy postmenopausal volunteers to test whole grapefruit, 2 juices, and 1 grapefruit soda. Fifty-nine participants were recruited through the Love/Avon Army of Women. The study consisted of a 3-wk run-in, 2 wk of grapefruit intake, and a 1-wk wash-out. Eight fasting blood samples were collected. An additional 5 samples drawn at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 hr after grapefruit intake were collected during an acute-phase study …

A Longitudinal Study Of Women’S Depression Symptom Profiles During And After The Postpartum Phase, Molly Fox, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn Feb 2018

A Longitudinal Study Of Women’S Depression Symptom Profiles During And After The Postpartum Phase, Molly Fox, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Background

An issue of critical importance for psychiatry and women's health is whether postpartum depression (PPD) represents a unique condition. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders asserts that major depressive disorder (MDD) may present with peripartum onset, without suggesting any other differences between MDD and PPD. The absence of any distinct features calls into question the nosologic validity of PPD as a diagnostic category. The present study investigates whether symptom profiles differ between PPD and depression occurring outside the postpartum phase.

Methods

In a prospective, longitudinal study of parturient women (N = 239), we examine the manifestation …

A Method For Characterizing Essential Tremor From The Shoulder To The Wrist, Daniel W. Geiger, Dennis Eggett, Steven K. Charles

Faculty Publications

Background

Despite the pervasive and devastating effect of Essential Tremor (ET), the distribution of ET throughout the upper limb is unknown. We developed a method for characterizing the distribution of ET and performed a preliminary characterization in a small number of subjects with ET.

Methods

Using orientation sensors and inverse kinematics, we measured tremor in each of the seven major degrees of freedom (DOF) from the shoulder to the wrist while ten patients with mild ET assumed 16 different postures. We described the tremor in each DOF in terms of power spectral density measures and investigated how tremor varied between …

Open Hydrology Courseware Using The United States Geological Survey’S National Water Census Data Portal, Jake Nelson, Daniel P. Ames, David Blodgett

Open Water Journal

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the primary U.S. Government agency for water data collection and dissemination. In this role, the USGS has recently created and deployed a National Water Census Data Portal (NWC-DP) which provides access to streamflow, evapotransporation, precipitation, aquatic biology and other data at the national level. Recognizing the value of these data sets for hydrologic science education, this paper presents an effort to bridge the gap between pencil–and-paper-based hydrology curriculum and the USGS NWC-DP resource. Specifically, we have developed an R package, National Water Census Education (NWCEd), and five associated laboratory exercises that integrate R- and …

Ladybird beetles, or coccinellids (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), are significant arthropod predators in a variety of terrestrial ecosystems. Numerous classical biological control projects undertaken over the last 120 years in North America have involved importation of exotic ladybird beetle species for the control of invasive insect species in annual and perennial agricultural production systems.

New Reports Of Exotic And Native Ambrosia And Bark Beetle Species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) From Ohio, Danielle M. Lightle, Kamal J.K. Gandhi, Anthony I. Cognato, Bryson J. Mosley, David G. Nielsen, Daniel A. Herms

The Great Lakes Entomologist

In a 2007 survey of ambrosia and bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) along a transect in northeastern Ohio, we collected six exotic and three native species not previously reported from the state. These species include the exotic ambrosia beetles Ambrosiodmus rubricollis (Eichhoff), Dryoxylon onoharaensum (Murayama), Euwallacea validus (Eichhoff), Xyleborus californicus Wood, Xyleborus pelliculosusEichhoff, and Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky). The native ambrosia beetle Corthylus columbianus Hopkins, and the native bark beetles Dryocoetes autographus (Ratzeburg) and Hylastes tenuis Eichhoff are also reported from Ohio for the first time. Our study suggests a northward range expansion for five of the six exotic species …

An Annotated Checklist Of Wisconsin Handsome Fungus Beetles (Coleoptera: Endomychidae), Michele B. Price, Daniel K. Young Feb 2018

An Annotated Checklist Of Wisconsin Handsome Fungus Beetles (Coleoptera: Endomychidae), Michele B. Price, Daniel K. Young

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidinbaited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examination of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be confirmed. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized.

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Urophora affinis Frfld. and U. quadrifasciata (Meig.) (Diptera: Tephriti- dae) are Eurasian gallicolous fruit flies introduced to North America in 1972 as biological control agents for Centaurea biebersteinii DC (spotted knapweed, Asteraceae, = C. maculosa auct. non Lam.) (Harris 1980). Through natural dispersal and numerous introductions, both Urophora species have become distributed throughout the introduced range of C. biebersteinii (Foote et al. 1993, Lang et al. 1997, Mays and Kok 2003).

Effects Of Pitfall Trap Preservative On Collections Of Carabid Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae), Kenneth W. Mccravy, Jason E. Willand

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Effects of six pitfall trap preservatives (5% acetic acid solution, distilled water, 70% ethanol, 50% ethylene glycol solution, 50% propylene glycol solution, and 10% saline solution) on collections of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were studied in a west-central Illinois deciduous forest from May to October 2005. A total of 819 carabids, representing 33 species and 19 genera, were collected. Saline produced significantly fewer captures than did acetic acid, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol, while distilled water produced significantly fewer captures than did acetic acid. Significant associations between numbers of captures and treatment were seen in four species: Amphasia interstitialis …

Efficacy Of Morphological Characters For Distinguishing Nymphs Of Epitheca Cynosura And Epitheca Spinigera (Odonata: Corduliidae) In Wisconsin, Robert B. Dubois, Kenneth J. Tennessen, Matthew S. Berg Feb 2018

Efficacy Of Morphological Characters For Distinguishing Nymphs Of Epitheca Cynosura And Epitheca Spinigera (Odonata: Corduliidae) In Wisconsin, Robert B. Dubois, Kenneth J. Tennessen, Matthew S. Berg

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Attempts to distinguish exuviae and last-instar nymphs of Epitheca cynosura (Say) and Epitheca spinigera (Selys) (Odonata: Corduliidae) using lateral spine characters have proven to be unreliable, and recent use of setae counts on only one side of the prementum or one labial palp have led to confusion because these structures often hold unequal numbers of setae on the two sides of the same specimen. Based on exuviae of 67 reared E. cynosura and 55 reared E. spinigera from lakes throughout Wisconsin, we tested the efficacy of previously used character states for distinguishing these species and searched for new characters to …

Great Diversity Of Insect Floral Associates May Partially Explain Ecological Success Of Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron Radicans Subsp. Negundo [Greene] Gillis, Anacardiaceae), David S. Senchina, Keith S. Summerville Feb 2018

Great Diversity Of Insect Floral Associates May Partially Explain Ecological Success Of Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron Radicans Subsp. Negundo [Greene] Gillis, Anacardiaceae), David S. Senchina, Keith S. Summerville

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Little is known about insect floral associates of poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans, Anacardiaceae), despite the species’ ubiquity and importance in nature and society. Poison ivy’s pollination syndrome and results from prior studies suggest that the plant is not specialized for any particular pollinator type; however, a systematic survey exploring this hypothesis has been lacking. For this study, insect floral associates of Toxicodendron radicans subsp. negundo from a central Iowa site were observed during the flowering season of 2005. Thirty- seven distinct insect floral associates were observed: 8 coleopterans (beetles), 7 dipterans (flies), 2 hemipterans (true bugs), 19 hymenopterans …

New Record Of Vanessa Virginiensis (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) As A Host Of Thyrateles Procax (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), David B. Maclean, John Luhman

The Great Lakes Entomologist

On 4 August, 2005 a male Thyrateles procax (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) emerged from a pupa of Vanessa virginiensis (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) which was contained within a screened cage in Cook County, MN. This is the first published record of Vanessa virginiensis as a host of Thyrateles procax. Adults of T. procax appear to be rare, as only two old records (both males) are known from Minnesota (University of Minnesota, Insect Collection)

Can Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus Planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Emerge From Logs Two Summers After Infested Trees Are Cut?, Toby R. Petrice, Robert A. Haack

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a serious invasive pest of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) in North America. Much of EAB’s range expansion has been attributed to human-assisted movement of infested items such as ash logs and firewood. It is unclear the amount of time that logs cut from live EAB-infested ash trees should be restricted from movement until they are no longer capable of producing viable EAB adults. In March and April 2004, we cut log sections from EAB-infested green ash (F. pennsylvanica Marsh) trees in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan. Log sections …
