Ecosystem Restoration After Hurricane Harvey, Celia Montemurri, Sarah Richard
Ecosystem Restoration After Hurricane Harvey, Celia Montemurri, Sarah Richard
Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton
Sarah: It was about a month before the stress of finals, and anticipation of Christmas break was upon us. I was scrolling through my emails when I noticed an opportunity to attend an 8-day winter breakout in Houston, Texas. After the devastation that Hurricane Harvey brought the city of Houston, one could expect the need for house repairs and cleanups. Instead, this trip was seeking individuals willing to help with conservation and restoration efforts. My roommate, and fellow Stew, Celia, has taught me nearly everything I know about the importance and great need for ecosystem restoration. I quickly forwarded her …

To fulfill bioenergetic demands of activation, T cells perform aerobic glycolysis, a process common to highly proliferative cells in which glucose is fermented into lactate rather than oxidized in mitochondria. However, the signaling events that initiate aerobic glycolysis in T cells remain unclear. We show T cell activation rapidly induces glycolysis independent of transcription, translation, CD28, and Akt and not involving increased glucose uptake or activity of glycolytic enzymes. Rather, TCR signaling promotes activation of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDHK1), inhibiting mitochondrial import of pyruvate and facilitating breakdown into lactate. Inhibition of PDHK1 reveals this switch is required acutely for …

Fluorescence Intensity And Lifetime Quenching Of Ceria Nanoparticles As Optical Sensor For Tiny Metallic Particles, Effat Samir, Nader Shehata, Ishac Kandas
Biology Faculty Publications
Ceria nanoparticles are studied as optical probe for different types of tiny metallic particles using fluorescence quenching technique. The synthesized ceria nanoparticles are characterized by having formed charged oxygen vacancies, which can be considered as the main receptors for the used tiny metallic particles to be sensed or absorbed. Under near-UV excitation, the visible fluorescent emission intensity is found to be reduced with increasing the concentration of the studied tiny metallic particles in an aqueous solution. To emphasize the optical sensing process, ceria nanoparticles fluorescence lifetime measurements were demonstrated before and after adding the tiny metallic particles. In addition, Stern– …

Regenerative therapy for degenerative spine disorders requires the identification of cells that can slow down and possibly reverse degenerative processes. Here, we identify an unanticipated wound-specific notochord sheath cell subpopulation that expresses Wilms Tumor (WT) 1b following injury in zebrafish. We show that localized damage leads to Wt1b expression in sheath cells, and that wt1b+cells migrate into the wound to form a stopper-like structure, likely to maintain structural integrity. Wt1b+sheath cells are distinct in expressing cartilage and vacuolar genes, and in repressing a Wt1b-p53 transcriptional programme. At the wound, wt1b+and entpd5+ cells constitute …

"Ain't I A Woman?": Black Women Negotiate And Resist Systemic Oppression In Undergraduate Engineering And Mathematics Disciplines, Jessica Alyce Wilson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this inquiry I used Black Feminist Thought as the interpretive lens to investigate the characterizations and experiences of high achieving Black women undergraduate engineering and mathematics majors at a predominantly white institution. The qualitative inquiry considered intersecting oppressions to evaluate the experiences of this population. In particular, Black women operate in the intersection of race and gender, thus for a thorough analysis of their engineering and mathematics experiences to occur, the historical context of the United States and its oppressive structures must be considered. Stereotypes and systemic oppression follow this socially constructed identity as the participants enter the fields …

Amphibians And Reptiles Of C. E. Miller Ranch And The Sierra Vieja, Chihuahuan Desert, Texas, Usa, Drew R. Davis, Travis J. Laduc
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
We report the occurrence of 50 species of amphibians and reptiles recently collected on C. E. Miller Ranch and the Sierra Vieja in the Chihuahuan Desert of Texas, USA and describe their perceived distribution and abundance across various habitat associations of the region. Our recent surveys follow intense, historic sampling of amphibians and reptiles from this region in 1948. Of the 50 species detected in recent surveys, six were not collected in 1948 and an additional three species documented in 1948 have yet to be detected in a 14-year period of recent surveys. Combining data from both historic and recent …

Introduction
Nathan Augustus Cobb, referred to as the "Father of Nematology in the United States" (56), was a Renaissance man and a man of humble beginnings. His early life experiences instilled in him the creativity, fortitude, and self reliance that were needed to raise himself alone from age 14, to complete college with little formal pre-college education, receive his Ph.D. in Germany, and go on to found a new discipline of science called "Nematology". His scientific and technical accomplishments were impressive, as indicated by the over 250 first-authored manuscripts he produced during his career. He identified over 1000 species of …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Wheat (Triticum aestivum) quality is mainly determined by grain storage protein compositions. Sulphur availability is essential for the biosynthesis of the main wheat storage proteins. In this study, the impact of different sulphur fertilizer regimes on a range of agronomically important traits and associated gene networks was studied. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to analyse the protein compositions of grains grown under four different sulphur treatments. Results revealed that sulphur supplementation had a significant effect on grain yield, harvest index, and storage protein compositions. Consequently, two comparative sulphur fertilizer treatments (0 and 30 kg ha−1 sulphur, with 50 …

Exercise has beneficial effects on metabolism and on tissues. The exercise-induced muscle factor β-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) plays a critical role in the browning of white fat and in insulin resistance. Here we show another function for BAIBA, that of a bone-protective factor that prevents osteocyte cell death induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). l-BAIBA was as or more protective than estrogen or N-acetyl cysteine, signaling through the Mas-Related G Protein-Coupled Receptor Type D (MRGPRD) to prevent the breakdown of mitochondria due to ROS. BAIBA supplied in drinking water prevented bone loss and loss of muscle function in the murine hindlimb …

Genome-Wide Profiling Reveals Functional Diversification Of ∆Fosb Gene Targets In The Hippocampus Of An Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Model., Jason C. You, Gabriel S. Stephens, Chia-Hsuan Fu, Xiaohong Zhang, Yin Liu, Jeannie Chin
Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
The activity-induced transcription factor ∆FosB has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) as a critical regulator of hippocampal function and cognition downstream of seizures and network hyperexcitability. With its long half-life (> 1 week), ∆FosB is well-poised to modulate hippocampal gene expression over extended periods of time, enabling effects to persist even during seizure-free periods. However, the transcriptional mechanisms by which ∆FosB regulates hippocampal function are poorly understood due to lack of identified hippocampal gene targets. To identify putative ∆FosB gene targets, we employed high-throughput sequencing of genomic DNA bound to ∆FosB after chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP-sequencing). We compared ChIP-sequencing results …
Innovative Monte Carlo Methods For Sampling Molecular Conformations, Aliasghar Sepehri
Innovative Monte Carlo Methods For Sampling Molecular Conformations, Aliasghar Sepehri
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Sampling molecular conformations is an important step in evaluating physical, mechanical, hydrodynamic, and optical properties of flexible molecules especially polymers. One powerful method for this purpose is configurational-bias Monte Carlo in which one random segment of a molecule is chosen, all segments toward one random end are removed, and then regrown segment by segment to produce a new geometry to be accepted/rejected according to probability laws. The advantage of this method is the ability to generate acceptable conformations that are favorable for intra- and intermolecular energies to save computational costs. However, when there are several interdependent energetic terms, trial generation …
How Should We Manage Urban Gardens, Mykl Nelson, Gail Langellotto
How Should We Manage Urban Gardens, Mykl Nelson, Gail Langellotto
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
We conducted an observation study of urban gardens in Corvallis and Portland, Oregon. A brief site analysis recorded weed pressure, season extension techniques, and crops grown, among other details. We took soil samples from every vegetable bed at each participating site. We are in the midst of testing these samples for nutrient content, heavy metal contamination, as well as a couple biological and physical parameters. We intend to contrast raised-beds against in-ground beds as well as suggest alteration to sampling procedures for garden soil. This research will result in increased precision of vocabulary by refining the defining differences between bed …

Bird Response To Habitat Restoration At Fernhill Wetlands, Joe Liebezeit, Carol Murdock, Candace Larson, Jay Withgott, Jonathan Plissner
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
In 2014-15 Clean Water Services implemented a massive habitat restoration project at Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove, Oregon that transformed 90 acres of unused sewage ponds into native wetland habitats designed to naturally treat wastewater. Since spring 2015 the Audubon Society of Portland (ASOP) has assessed bird response to this habitat restoration effort through a community science effort involving local birders, formal bird surveys conducted by ASOP, and analysis of historical eBird surveys conducted at the site for decades. Our general predictions were that 1) Overall avian species richness and abundance would increase, 2) Open-water dependent species would diminish in …
