Gmos, International Law And Indigenous Peoples, Casandia Bellevue

Pace International Law Review

This Article sprung from a desire to discover why—despite scientific uncertainty and the oft-cited precautionary principle in international law—genetically modified organisms are still allowed to spread via international trade and natural ecological cycles. While exploring this topic, it did not take long to come across the environmental justice impacts of genetically modified crops, and their particularly disparate impact upon indigenous peoples across the globe. Not only are GMOs threatening biodiversity and our planet, but also the very existence and cultural foundations of many indigenous groups.

This Article seeks to answer the following questions: What are the international agreements that can …

Notes On The Biology Of Saperda Imitans Infesting Wind-Damaged Black Cherry In Allegheny Hardwood Stands, Marc F. Digirolomo, Douglas C. Allen, Stephen V. Stehman

The Great Lakes Entomologist

This paper reports observations made on the life history and biology of Saperda imitans Felt & Joutel in black cherry, Prunus serotina Ehrh. S. imitans was the principle longhorned beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) reared from bolts collected from 68 wind-thrown black cherry at the Kane Experimental Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania. It was also the only species that overwintered in the sapwood/outer heartwood, and thus impacted the commercial value of these trees. Gaurotes cyanipennis (Say) was the only other cerambycid reared from caged bolts taken from wind-thrown black cherry. The cerambycids Stenocorus vittiger (Randall), Arthophylax attenuatus (Haldman), G. cyanipennis, Neoclytus acuminatus acuminatus …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Large-scale surveys of forest insects provide two distinct benefits: the detection of invasive and exotic species that cause millions of dollars of damage annually to forest and ornamental industries, and the addition of a wealth of species distribution and diversity information to the scientific community. We intensively surveyed the Northeast and East-central regions of Minnesota from 2006-2008 for invasive/exotic and native Scolytinae using Lindgren funnel traps baited with one of four lures (a/β-pinene, ultra-high-release ethanol [EtOH], EtOH+a-pinene, and Ips 3-part). We captured 16,841 scolytines (representing 25 genera) of which over 40% were Ips pini (Say) and Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff). We …

Case-Building Behavior, Persistence, And Emergence Success Of Pycnopsyche Guttifer (Walker) (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) In Laboratory And In Situ Environments: Potential Trade-Offs Of Material Preference, David C. Houghton, Sarah E. Rogers, Kate Hocquard, Charlotte I. Wolfe

The Great Lakes Entomologist

When removed from their cases in a non-flow laboratory environment, 5th instar Pycnopsyche guttifer (Walker) larvae were always successful in constructing a new case within 24 h when woody debris was present as a material choice. Most were successful within 1 h. Larvae were never successful at case building in the absence of wood in a non-flow environment. These laboratory-constructed ‘emergency cases’ were flimsy, lacking in shape, and larger than field cases. Laboratory case size, shape, and material preference remained constant after repeated daily evacuations over a series of 10 days. Larvae could be induced to construct a case composed …

Estimation Of Sorting Time For Arthropod Samples Collected With Tullgren Funnels, Ernest C. Bernard, Pennie J. Long

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Arthropods were sorted from samples obtained with Tullgren funnels. Each sorter maintained a log of time per session and arthropods removed per session. Five individuals removed all arthropods from 12 separate samples and sorted them into previously designated class or ordinal taxa. Each sample was sorted by a single student. Students were allowed to develop their own approaches to sorting and do it as time permitted. Mean sorting rate per sample was 2.43 arthropods per minute, with a range of 1.42-5.64, while mean sorting rate for a sorting session was 3.41 specimens per minute. Specimen density was only weakly correlated …

Grass Hosts Of Cereal Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Between Wheat-Cropping Cycles In South Dakota, Louis S. Hesler, Kurt J. Dagel

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Several grasses may serve as alternative hosts for cereal aphids during the interim between small-grain crops in South Dakota, but field studies to determine which grasses are important have not been undertaken. We sampled annual and perennial grasses for cereal aphids in 18 counties in South Dakota in the month of August over three years. Eighty-five of 240 site samples had one or more species of cereal aphids, including 61 of 65 corn sites and 12 of 13 sorghum and sudangrass sites. Four species of cereal aphids were found during the survey: corn leaf aphid, 74 times; bird cherry-oat aphid, …

Status Of Zygiella And Parazygiella (Araneae: Araneidae) In The Great Lakes States, Michael L. Draney Feb 2018

Status Of Zygiella And Parazygiella (Araneae: Araneidae) In The Great Lakes States, Michael L. Draney

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A confusing nomenclatural history has resulted in the persistence of the idea that Parazygiella montana (C. L. Koch, 1834), a Palearctic species of orbweaver (Araneae: Araneidae), occurs in the Great Lakes states. I discuss this nomenclatural history and report upon all available material from the Great Lakes states to show that P. montana has never been recorded from the region, and that all previous records of Zygiella/Zilla montana refer to a native species, Zygiella nearctica Gertsch, 1964. Although Z. nearctica has been collected from mainland Michigan and Wisconsin historically, all post 1960 records of this species are from islands in …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Development of an effective IPM strategy for pear thrips, Taeniothrips inconsequens (Uzel) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a pest of sugar maple, Acer saccharum Marshall, demands an understanding of their population fluctuations over time. Pear thrips populations were monitored using a standardized soil sampling method every fall from 1989 – 2005 in 14 counties of Vermont (U.S.). Data from individual sites were combined into north, central and south regions. High numbers of thrips emerged from soil sampled in 1989, 1990, 1993 and 2001, particularly in the north region (Washington, Lamoille, and Franklin counties). The central and south regions had lower pear thrips populations …

Revisiting The Mound-Building Ant, Lasius Claviger, In A Reconstructed Tallgrass Prairie, Chris E. Petersen, Christine Berta, Dwight T. Johnson, Barbara A. Petersen

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A tallgrass prairie located in northeastern Illinois was revisited to update relationships in a 2002 study between the presence of mounds of Lasius claviger (Formicidae) and characteristics of the soil and prairie flora. Reconstruction of the 7.1 ha site began 26 years ago. As in 2002, mounds of L. claviger did not appear to be affecting soil temperature, but were associated with higher floral richness and differences in soil moisture at 10 cm depth as compared to control sites having the same major grass type. In addition, soil organic content and above-ground plant biomass were significantly higher where mounds were …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Aphis echinaceae, n. sp. is described from specimens collected in Douglas County, Minnesota, on Echinacea angustifolia (DC.). The aphid is illustrated with biometric data for alate and apterous vivipara. Its short cauda and siphunculi, and presence of secondary sensoria on antennal segments III, IV, and V in both morphs makes this Aphis morphologically similar to A. debilicornis (Gillette and Palmer), A. lugentis Williams and A. caliginosa Hottes and Frison, and root feeding aphids of the subgenus Pseudoprotaphis Kadyrbekov and genus Protaphis Börner. A diagnosis is provided.

Effects Of Visual Silhouette, Leaf Size And Host Species On Feeding Preference By Adult Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus Planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Deepa S. Pureswaran, Therese M. Poland

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is an invasive species recently established in North America. In large arena bioassays, when given a choice among live green ash, Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh and artificial ash saplings that were hidden or exposed from view, beetles preferred live trees (either visible or hidden) compared to artificial trees that had similar visual silhouettes, confirming that olfactory cues are used to locate hosts. Examination of the effect of leaf size revealed that large leaves attracted more beetles than medium-sized leaves that in turn attracted more beetles than small leaves of the same age. …
