Inventory Of Aquatic And Semiaquatic Coleoptera From The Grand Portage Indian Reservation, Cook County, Minnesota, David B. Maclean
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Collections of aquatic invertebrates from the Grand Portage Indian Reservation (Cook County, Minnesota) during 2001 – 2012 resulted in 9 families, 43 genera and 112 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Coleoptera. The Dytiscidae had the most species (53), followed by Hydrophilidae (20), Gyrinidae (14), Haliplidae (8), Chrysomelidae (7), Elmidae (3) and Curculionidae (5). The families Helodidae and Heteroceridae were each represented by a single species. Seventy seven percent of species were considered rare or uncommon (1 - 10 records), twenty percent common (11 - 100 records) and only three percent abundant (more than 100 records). Sixty nine percent of species …

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Dalmatian toadflax, Linaria dalmatica (L.) Mill. (Scrophulariaceae), a native to the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea regions of Europe and Asia, has invaded over one million hectares in the western United States and Canada, in habitats similar to its native range. Once established, the aggressive vegetative growth of the plant allows it to invade undisturbed habitats where it can out-compete most other vegetation, placing native plant communities at risk.
Biological control of L. dalmatica with Mecinus janthinus Thomson (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has shown promise in the field. In both studies reported in this paper, the presence of insect attack reduced L. …

The Lusk Creek Watershed, located in Pope County, IL, long has been rec- ognized as a high quality area of biological significance, but surveys of the stream macroinvertebrate fauna have been limited. Thus, a survey of the benthic insect community at 11 sites in the upper portion of Lusk Creek was conducted from May 2003 to April 2005. A total of 20,888 specimens, mostly immatures, were examined during the study and represented eight orders. The Diptera, by far, was the most abundant order, with 18,590 specimens, almost all of which were members of the Chironomidae or Simuliidae. Members of the …

Discontinuity In The Insect Assemblages Of A Northern Lower Michigan Stream, David C. Houghton, Constance M. Brandin, Leila Reynolds, Lindsey L. Elzinga
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We assessed the physicochemical and biological continuity of a 2nd–4th order reach of the Little Manistee River in northern Lower Michigan. Contrary to typical woodland streams, the downstream sites of the river were covered with a dense riparian canopy, whereas the upstream sites were devoid of this canopy due to historical (≥10 ybp) agriculture. Other than slight changes in water temperature and dissolved oxygen, there were no appreciable differences in measured water physicochemistry between the canopied and non-canopied sites. The stream, however, appeared biologically discontinuous as indicated by lower shredder abundance and higher filtering collector abundance at the upstream (non-canopied) …

Attraction Of Agrilus Planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) And Other Buprestids To Sticky Traps Of Various Colors And Shapes, Toby A. Haack, Robert A. Haack, Therese M. Poland
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The family Buprestidae (Coleoptera) contains numerous economically significant species, including the emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, first discovered in North America in 2002. Effective traps for monitoring spread and population densities of EAB and other buprestids are needed. Studies were conducted in 2008 to test different colors and shapes of sticky traps baited with manuka oil for capturing EAB and other buprestids. Among different trap shapes, an enlarged purple Agrilus-shaped silhouette (15 cm wide × 55 cm all) attached to a white background (40 cm wide × 60 cm tall) captured the most buprestid species compared to …

Pentatomoidea (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae, Scutelleridae) Associated With The Dioecious Shrub Florida Rosemary, Ceratiola Ericoides (Ericaceae), A. G. Wheeler Jr.
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Florida rosemary (Ceratiola ericoides), an ericaceous shrub with needlelike leaves, is characteristic of Florida scrubs and certain other xeric plant communities of well-drained sands. The plant is dioecious, its inconspicuous male and female flowers borne on separate individuals. From 2003 to 2012 (mainly 2007–2012), rosemary was sampled periodically (with all months included at least once during the period) in sand ridges of peninsular Florida and two riverine dunes in southeastern Georgia. Branches of male and female plants were tapped separately into a beating net. Sampling during the final three years was female-plant-biased to facilitate work on fruit- and seed-feeding …

Tymbal Morphology And Co-Ccurrence Of Spartina Sap-Feeding Insects (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha), Stephen W. Wilson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The exoskeletal morphology of the structures associated with the production of substrate vibrations used for communication was examined for members of three guilds of sap-feeding insects on the cordgrasses Spartina alterniflora Loisel, S. patens (Aiton) Muhl., and S. pectinata Link (Poaceae: Chloridoidea). Measurements of the second abdominal sternite and its apodemes, the “tymbal,” were made for the males of 14 species of planthoppers and 2 species of leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Caliscelidae, Cicadellidae, Delphacidae, Derbidae). Morphometric comparisons revealed significant differences among the insect species on each of the cordgrass species. If tymbal morphology reflects definitive features of the vibrational signals then …

Like many outstanding naturalists, John E. (“Jay”) McPherson grew up with a strong interest in the natural world, especially insects. This innate curiosity led him to enroll as a zoology major at San Diego State University in 1959. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he continued on to pursue his interest in insect biology, completing a Master’s thesis on the life history and morphology of a poorly known species of Notonectidae. Shortly thereafter, a teaching assistantship enabled him to pursue a Ph.D. at Michigan State University in East Lansing, where his research involved distinguishing two closely related species of …

Surrogate Mothers, Gestational Carriers, And A Pragmatic Adaptation Of The Uniform Parentage Act Of 2000, John C. Sheldon
Maine Law Review
Recent medical advances that permit human conception without intercourse, in combination with sociological changes in our country, dramatically enlarge the population of adults who can produce or raise children. The legal price for this broadening of opportunity, however, is a diminishment of certainty: We are no longer sure whom we should identify as a child's parents. These are important questions, of course, because ready answers will quickly dampen disputes about custody and will immediately establish support obligations and the children's eligibility for health insurance, for inheritance, for Workers' Compensation benefits, and for Social Security survivor benefits. But as important as …

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a non-invasive optical imaging modality that shows the potential to aid pathologists in breast cancer diagnoses cases. In this study, breast cancer tissues from different patients were imaged by a hyperspectral system to detect spectral differences between normal and breast cancer tissues. Tissue samples mounted on slides were identified from 10 different patients. Samples from each patient included both normal and ductal carcinoma tissue, both stained with hematoxylin and eosin stain and unstained. Slides were imaged using a snapshot HSI system, and the spectral reflectance differences were evaluated. Analysis of the spectral reflectance values indicated that …

Heganism, Thomas E. Randall
Heganism, Thomas E. Randall
Between the Species
An emblematic association exists between meat consumption and the gender identity hegemonic masculinity. This association is so strong that men who pursue meatless diets (especially vegans) are likely to be socially ostracized. Heganism is a diet/gender identity that aims to reconstruct hegemonic masculinity with the goal of removing these stigmas attached to male veganism. Yet heganism fails to do this, and, in fact, worsens the marginalization of male vegans. Therefore, heganism ought to be rejected. Instead, an alternative option for reducing the marginalization of male vegans could be found in the emergent literature on non-hegemonic masculinities. By rejecting hegemonic …

Exploring Technology Forecasting And Its Implications For Strategic Technology Planning, Yonghee Cho
Dissertations and Theses
As the importance of R&D has been growing in economic growth, the accountability and effectiveness of R&D programs are highly emphasized. Especially, in times of economic downturn, the evaluation of performance in a firm is needed to justify R&D investment. In response, various attempts have been made to improve success rates of R&D projects, gain competitive advantage, and achieve a firm's growth in profitability. In particular, in industries where technological innovation is significant, strategic technology planning and R&D capabilities may be the lead ones in defining the dynamic capabilities of a firm. In addition, technology forecasting (TF) in technology planning …

Few studies document plants in caves. Our field observations of a widespread and seemingly angiosperm-rich cave flora in SW China lead us to test the following hypotheses, 1) SW China caves contain a diverse vascular plant flora, 2) that this is a relic of a largely absent forest type lacking endemic species, and 3) that the light environment plants occupy in caves is not distinct from non-cave habitats. To do so we surveyed 61 caves and used species accumulation curves (SAC) to estimate the total diversity of this flora and used a subsample of 14 caves to characterise the light …
