Polyol-Producing Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated From Sourdough And Their Application To Reduce Sugar In A Quinoa-Based Milk Substitute, Stephanie Jeske, Emanuele Zannini, Kieran M. Lynch, Aidan Coffey, Elke K. Arendt
Department of Biological Sciences Publications
The interest for plant-based dairy substitutes is expanding rapidly and consumers are opting for nutritious and healthy dairy alternatives. The reduction of sugar using different exogenous enzymes in combination with lactic acid fermentation in a quinoa-based milk substitute was explored in this study. Different amylolytic enzymes were used to release sugar from the raw material, which were further metabolised to mannitol, due to fermentation with two heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria. Using these two biotechnological techniques enables the reduction of sugar, while also preserving some of the sweetness. Leuconostoc citreum TR116, and Lactobacillus brevis TR055 were isolated from sourdough. Both strains …

Ostertagia ostertagi is a gastrointestinal parasitic nematode that affects cattle and leads to a loss of production. In this study, we present the first large-scale genomic survey of O. ostertagi by the analysis of expressed transcripts from three stages of the parasite: third- stage larvae, fourth-stage larvae and adult worms. Using an in silico approach, 2284 genes were identified from over 7000 expressed sequence tags and abundant transcripts were analyzed and characterized by their functional profile. Of the 2284 genes, 66% had similarity to other known or predicted genes while the rest were novel and potentially represent genes specific to …

Comparing Balance Performance On Force Platform Measures In Individuals With Parkinson's Disease And Healthy Adults, Cathy C. Harro, Amanda Kelch, Cora Hargis, Abigail Dewitt
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Introduction. Postural instability is a known contributing factor to balance dysfunction and increased fall risk in those with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Computerized posturography employing a force platform system provides objective, quantitative as- sessments of postural control impairments. This study examines balance performance as measured by force platform (FP) tests in persons with PD compared to age-matched healthy adults. Secondarily, we examine if these FP measures provide diagnostic and clinically meaningful information about the underlying balance impairments in the PD population.
Methods. Participants—42 individuals with PD (Hoehn and Yahr stage 2.33 0.77) and 55 age-matched healthy adults—were assessed on …

Faculty Publications and Presentations
The qualitative study aims to examine the lived experiences of women persisting in the distance; professional doctoral degrees as they seek to integrate and balance their family of origin and current family system with their development as scholars.
This qualitative study employed Moustakas’ (1994) transcendental phenomeno-logical approach through a purposive sampling of eleven women who are en-rolled in distance education, professional doctoral programs at two universities in the southern United States.
This study furthers the existing research by demonstrating that family is inti-mately tied to the scholarly identity development and persistence of women enrolled in distance education, professional doctorate programs. …
Public And Private Spending On Justice In Canada, Lisa Moore, Mitchell Perlmutter, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Public And Private Spending On Justice In Canada, Lisa Moore, Mitchell Perlmutter, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Canadian Forum on Civil Justice
As a ubiquitous aspect of everyday life, it should come as little surprise that legal problems have a tremendous cumulative cost on society. Assessing the cost of civil, family and criminal justice problems in Canada is a complex and multifaceted undertaking, owing in part to the number of agencies involved in the administration of justice, the various types of justice system expenses, and the intangible and ‘knock on’ costs that often result from experiencing legal problems. Further, costs can be examined in monetary, temporal, personal, physical health, mental health and other terms. The monetary costs are of course the most …
How To Be A Realist About Natural Kinds, P.D. Magnus
How To Be A Realist About Natural Kinds, P.D. Magnus
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Although some authors hold that natural kinds are necessarily relative to disciplinary domains, many authors presume that natural kinds must be absolute, categorical features of the reality— often assuming that without even mentioning the alternative. Recognizing both possibilities, one may ask whether the difference especially matters. I argue that it does. Looking at recent arguments about natural kind realism, I argue that we can best make sense of the realism question by thinking of natural kindness as a relation that holds between a category and a domain.

Joint Coordination Variability In Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructed Subjects During Stair Ambulation Using A Vector Coding Technique, Bryan R. Simrak
Joint Coordination Variability In Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructed Subjects During Stair Ambulation Using A Vector Coding Technique, Bryan R. Simrak
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common injury, with an estimated incidence of 120,000 to 200,000 per year in the United States. ACL reconstruction surgery is the standard treatment for this injury to restore knee joint stability and function. While surgical reconstruction has been shown to restore laxity of the knee, current literature lacks consensus on return to normal knee joint kinematics following surgery. Additionally, re-injury is a major risk for those who return to sports activity after reconstruction surgery. Dynamical systems methods for quantifying joint coordination variability have been explored as a method for detecting differences between ACL …

Radio Frequency Identification In The Beef Cattle Production Cycle At Livestock Services Inc., Edwin Mendoza
Radio Frequency Identification In The Beef Cattle Production Cycle At Livestock Services Inc., Edwin Mendoza
Agricultural Education and Communication
As time and technology has progressed, precision tracking has led many in the livestock industry to look into the next type of technology available to make their operations more efficient. This technology allows producers to individually track animals, with information ranging from weight, vaccinations used and pasture movements throughout the whole production cycle.
Applying Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology early in the production cycle can show that there is a higher accuracy in traceability that will decrease losses, and incorporate a better management style (Nääs, 2006).
Although this technology is in the initial testing stages in the multiple variations it …

The Use Of Seal Bombs In California Fisheries: Unknown Impacts Point To An Urgent Need For More Research, Aimee Kerr
The Use Of Seal Bombs In California Fisheries: Unknown Impacts Point To An Urgent Need For More Research, Aimee Kerr
Working Papers
Commercial fishing in California is a significant source of jobs and incomes. The industry can also produce detrimental environmental impacts, including injuries to threatened and endangered marine mammals and damage to marine ecosystems. There are a host of state and federal legal and regulatory mechanisms in place to protect marine mammals and their habitat. Some of these are more effective than others, and all exist within a continually evolving political and economic landscape. Seal bombs are incendiary devices used by some fishers to deter sea lions, seals, and other mammals from fish nets and fishing grounds. Measures to allow the …

Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses affecting agricultural productivity. The present study investigated combining abilities, heterosis and heritability estimates of common bean under salinity conditions for biochemical, physiological and phenological traits using a half-diallel cross. The salinity stress treatments were applied during all the vegetative cycle. Genetic analysis revealed highly significant genotypic variations between the four parents and their six hybrids, indicating a genetic variability and possibility of genetic improvement using such genetic material of common bean for salinity tolerance. Both general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities were highly significant for all the studied traits under …

Water adsorbed at the metal-support interface (MSI) plays an important role in multiple reactions. Due to its importance in CO preferential oxidation (PrOx), we examined H2 oxidation kinetics in the presence of water over Au/TiO2 and Au/Al2O3 catalysts, reaching the following mechanistic conclusions: (i) O2 activation follows a similar mechanism to that proposed in CO oxidation catalysis; (ii) weakly adsorbed H2O is a strong reaction inhibitor; (iii) fast H2 activation occurs at the MSI, and (iv) H2 activation kinetics are inconsistent with traditional dissociative H2 chemisorption on metals. Density …

Chronic cerebrovascular hypoperfusion results in vascular dementia and increases predisposition to lacunar infarcts. However, there are no suitable animal models. In this study, we developed a novel model for chronic irreversible cerebral hypoperfusion in mice. Briefly, an ameroid constrictor was placed on the right carotid artery to gradually occlude the vessel, while a microcoil was placed on the left carotid artery to prevent compensation of the blood flow. This procedure resulted in a gradual hypoperfusion developing over a period of 34 days with no cerebral blood flow recovery. Histological analysis of the brain revealed neuronal and axonal degeneration as well …

Overhauser-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (OMRI) is a double resonance technique applied for oxygen imaging in aqueous samples and biological tissues. In this report, we present an improved OMRI approach of oxygen measurement using the single line “Finland” trityl spin probe. Compared to a traditional approach, we introduced an additional mechanism of leakage of spin polarization due to an interaction of a spin system with oxygen. The experimental comparison of the new approach with an oxygen-dependent leakage factor to a traditional approach performed in phantom samples in vitro, and mouse tumor model in vivo, shows improved accuracy of determination of oxygen …

Approximate Analytical Solutions Of Space-Fractional Telegraph Equations By Sumudu Adomian Decomposition Method, Hasib Khan, Cemil Tunç, Rahmat A. Khan, Akhtyar G. Shirzoi, Aziz Khan
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The main goal in this work is to establish a new and efficient analytical scheme for space fractional telegraph equation (FTE) by means of fractional Sumudu decomposition method (SDM). The fractional SDM gives us an approximate convergent series solution. The stability of the analytical scheme is also studied. The approximate solutions obtained by SDM show that the approach is easy to implement and computationally very much attractive. Further, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the accuracy and stability for linear and nonlinear cases.

Fractional Order Thermoelastic Thick Circular Plate With Two Temperatures In Frequency Domain, Parveen Lata
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present investigation is concerned with thermomechanical interactions in the fractional theory of thermoelasticity for a homogeneous isotropic thick circular plate in the light of two-temperature thermoelasticity theory in frequency domain. The upper and lower surfaces of the thick plate are traction free and subjected to an axisymmetric heat supply. The solution is found by using Hankel transform technique and a direct approach without the use of potential functions. The analytical expressions of displacement components, stresses, conductive temperature, temperature change and cubic dilatation are computed in transformed domain. Numerical inversion technique has been applied to obtain the results in the …

On Chaplygin’S Method For First Order Neutral Differential Equation, Mamta Kumari, Y. S. Valaulikar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we discuss the existence of a solution of a first order neutral differential equation with piecewise constant argument. We extend the method of Chaplygin’s sequence to obtain two sided bounds for the solution. These bounds are in the form of sequences of functions which are solutions of associated linear neutral differential equations with piecewise constant argument. This construction of monotonic sequences of upper and lower functions approximate, with increasing accuracy, the desired solution of the neutral differential equation with piecewise constant argument. Further we show that these sequences converge uniformly and monotonically to the unique solution of …

Study Design: Systematic review.
Objectives: Past research has demonstrated increased speed and severity of progression for spinal epidural abscesses (SEAs) of the thoracic level, specifically, when compared with SEAs of other spinal cord levels. Untreated, this infection can result in permanent neurological sequelae with eventual progression to death if inadequately managed. Despite the seriousness of this disease, no articles have focused on the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of SEAs of the thoracic level. For this reason, specific focus on SEAs of the thoracic level occurred when researchers designed and implemented the following systematic review.
