Characterizing A Role For Corest (Spr-1) In Regulating The Function Of Lsd1 (Spr-5), Robert Goldin
Characterizing A Role For Corest (Spr-1) In Regulating The Function Of Lsd1 (Spr-5), Robert Goldin
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mutations in histone modifying enzymes have dramatic effects on transmitting epigenetic information between generations. In C. elegans, the H3K4me2 demethylase, spr-5, and the H3K9me2 methyltransferase, met-2, synergize at fertilization to reprogram the epigenetic landscape and prevent the inappropriate expression of germ specific genes in the early zygote. If either enzyme is lost, developmental defects occur; both spr-5 and met-2 mutants display a progressive sterility phenotype. This phenotype is even more exacerbated in spr-5; met-2 double mutants, which exhibit maternal effect sterility and a severe developmental delay after a single generation. In mammals, orthologs of SPR-5, LSD1 …

A New Security Framework For Geoengineering, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Lisa L. Ferrari
A New Security Framework For Geoengineering, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Lisa L. Ferrari
Political Science Faculty Publications
As the national security ramifications of climate change grow more pronounced, climate manipulation technologies, called geoengineering, will become more attractive as a method of staving off climate-related security emergencies. Geoengineering includes methods of carbon dioxide removal and/or solar radiation management and can theoretically achieve significant reductions in warming-related environmental changes, but they are scientifically untested. Geoengineering technologies have the potential to disrupt the global ecological status quo and mount a potentially coercive threat with implications as serious as those in wartime. Several of these technologies can be deployed from the global commons, but international law provides no more than indirect …

Citizen science is a growing phenomenon. With millions of people involved and billions of in-kind dollars contributed annually, this broad extent, fine grain approach to data collection should be garnering enthusiastic support in the mainstream science and higher education communities. However, many academic researchers demonstrate distinct biases against the use of citizen science as a source of rigorous information. To engage the public in scientific research, and the research community in the practice of citizen science, a mutual understanding is needed of accepted quality standards in science, and the corresponding specifics of project design and implementation when working with a …

Nature knows no legal boundaries. Resources cannot be stopped by walls with barbwire; no matter how high some people want to build them. They cross- national territories and expand under their logic. They belong to many nations, and they are there for the responsible exploitation of their communities. The Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) and its rich hydrocarbon deposits are no exceptions. The implication of this is that for the development of this enclosed sea area to be efficient, effective, and safe it requires not only the cooperation of government officials but also the inclusion of other actors, such as academic …

Our research project surveyed students at Pace University (both on the New York City and Pleasantville campuses) and looked into their understanding of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) & Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The goal was to better understand students’ knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS, and the ways in which they might be misinformed. Our research looked to see if there was any stigma surrounding student’s perceptions of the virus and its transmission. The study also asked students about their sexual practices. Specifically, we utilized an Institutional Review Board approved survey, to ask students about their sexual behavior to see if they were …
Improving Seaglider Efficiency: An Analysis Of Wing Shapes, Hull Morphologies, And Propulsion Methods, Christopher James Hockley
Improving Seaglider Efficiency: An Analysis Of Wing Shapes, Hull Morphologies, And Propulsion Methods, Christopher James Hockley
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Autonomous underwater gliders are a family of autonomous underwater vehicles used for long-term observation of oceanic environments. These gliders leverage changes in buoyancy and the resulting vertical motion, to generate forward locomotion via hydrodynamic surfaces. In order to function for extended periods, these systems operate in a low-speed, low-drag regime. This research examines factors impacting the operational efficiencies of gliders, including morphological changes, configuration changes, and propulsion. An interesting question arises when considering the operational efficiencies of conventionally propelled systems at the operating speeds typical of gliders. Can a conventional propulsion system match the efficiency of an underwater glider buoyancy …

The current study empirically investigates the relationships between the Dark Triad personality traits and cyber-aggression among adolescents (14–18 year old). The sample consisted of 324 participants aged 14–18 (M = 16.05, SD = 1.31). Participants completed the Short Dark Triad (SD3) as a measure of the Dark Triad personality traits, the Facebook Intensity Scale and a scale to measure cyber-aggression. Structural equation modelling was applied to investigate the relationships. Results show that only Facebook intensity and psychopathy significantly predict cyber-aggression, when controlling for age and gender. Findings are discussed regarding the potential importance to further study Dark Triad traits, and …

Relationships Between Fluvial Ecosystems And The Iowan Erosion Surface, Lilian Heinzel, Chad E. Heinzel
Undergraduate Student Work
The streams and rivers of the Iowan Surface partially form the foundation of our local ecosystems, everything from providing drinking water to producing floods. The Black Hawk Creek, Cedar River, and Maquoketa River were studied in the months of June and July of 2018. The goal of the research was to understand the ecology of each water way, how life was sustained by these rivers and creek and how the surrounding landscape may have determined the features of the waterways. Datasheets were filled out describing the sites’ ecological and geologic makeup, and GIS Trimble units were used to chart the …

The Diversity Found Among Carbapenem-Resistant Bacteria, Galen Edward Card
Theses and Dissertations
This work will look at two factors that add to the diversity of carbapenem resistant bacteria. First, it focuses on the diversity of carbapenemase resistance plasmids. 446 plasmids were characterized by size, gene content and replicon groups. We identified that on average, over 30% of the encoded proteins on each plasmid have an unknown function. Plasmid sizes ranged from 1.6kb to 500kb, with an average of around 100kb and median of 80kb. Additionally, six replicon groups account for 80% of all the carbapenemase resistance plasmids. We also highlight the lack of data available for carbapenemase carrying plasmids from bacterial genera …

Uniting And Dividing Influences Of Religion On Familial Relationships, Heather Howell Kelley
Uniting And Dividing Influences Of Religion On Familial Relationships, Heather Howell Kelley
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research suggests that religion can be both helpful and harmful. However, much of the research on religion and families has employed relatively simple, distal measures of religion and has predominantly focused on only one side of the dualistic nature of religion. Drawing upon interviews with 198 religious families (N = 476 individuals), the purpose of this study is to better understand how religion can have both a unifying and a dividing influence on familial relationships. Three overarching themes are presented, accompanied by supporting primary qualitative data from participants. These themes include: (1) How religious beliefs unite and divide families; …

A Content Analysis Of The Journal Of Adolescent Health: Using Past Literature To Guide Healthcare Research Of Us Ethnic Minority Adolescents, Kate Amanda Handy
Theses and Dissertations
Ethnic minority research in the U.S. is important given the increase in ethnic minority populations, particularly within the adolescent population. Content analyses are useful in guiding researchers as they document representation and progress of research on ethnic minorities within many fields, including healthcare. The Journal of Adolescent Health was coded for the following variables: ethnic minority focus, article topic, article funding by topic, geographic location of sample, and inclusion of measures (ethnic identity and acculturation). The results indicated that the percentage of published articles focused on each specific ethnic minority group were lower than the current U. S. percentages, including …
The Power Of Three: A Latent Class Analysis Of The Three Parent-Child Relationships In Stepfamilies And Their Influence On Emerging Adult Outcomes, Braquel Rachel Egginton
The Power Of Three: A Latent Class Analysis Of The Three Parent-Child Relationships In Stepfamilies And Their Influence On Emerging Adult Outcomes, Braquel Rachel Egginton
Theses and Dissertations
Research on stepfamilies strongly supports the importance of positive parent-child relationships on child outcomes. However, most of this research has focused on one or two of these relationships failing to acknowledge the interconnected impact of all three parental figures. To fill this gap, I used latent class analysis and identified six classes of parent-child relationship constellations. The national sample in this study (n=1,159) were all participants in The Stepfamily Experiences Project (STEP). Parent-child relationship quality indicators were based on participants' retrospective reports on the warmth/closeness, communication, and level of active parenting they experienced in their stepfamily household. After identifying classes …
Homogeneous Reaction Kinetics Of Carbohydrates With Viologen Catalysts For Biofuel Cell Applications, Hilary Bingham
Homogeneous Reaction Kinetics Of Carbohydrates With Viologen Catalysts For Biofuel Cell Applications, Hilary Bingham
Theses and Dissertations
Energy usage is continually on the rise and significant efforts are being extended to provide more renewable energy. One area of exploration is the development of fuel cells, which includes biofuel cells that can extract energy from carbohydrates obtained from biomass. Recently, viologen catalysts have been shown to enhance reaction rates of energy extraction and improve carbohydrate conversion efficiencies. However, characterizing the effects of process parameters such as pH, reactant concentrations, and carbohydrate exposure time to buffer solutions with a rigorous model is lacking. This thesis characterizes the homogeneous reaction between carbohydrates and a methyl viologen catalyst to provide insights …

Difference In Therapeutic Alliance: High-Conflict Co-Parents Vs Regular Couples, Andrea Mae Parady
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to explore differences in the therapeutic alliance for High-Conflict Co-Parents (HCC) vs. Regular Couples. Therapeutic alliance refers to the relationship, consisting of a bond, and agreement on the tasks and goals of therapy, between at least two people in the therapeutic relationship. It was hypothesized that HCC clients would have lower therapeutic alliance scores compared to regular couple clients. The results supported this hypothesis. By identifying these differences, more research can be conducted to improve our understanding of how to strengthen the therapeutic alliance with HCC clients, leading to improved treatment of this population.
Does Dietary Behavior Mediate The Association Between Hedonic Hunger And Bmi In Overweight/Obese Adolescents?, Kirandeep Kaur
Does Dietary Behavior Mediate The Association Between Hedonic Hunger And Bmi In Overweight/Obese Adolescents?, Kirandeep Kaur
Theses and Dissertations
Heightened reward associated with palatable food, a construct referred to as hedonic reward, can promote excessive energy intake among adults. However, no known studies have examined the influence of hedonic reward on adolescents' eating behavior and weight status. The present study examined whether there was an association between hedonic hunger and weight status in overweight/obese adolescents and whether dietary behavior (caloric consumption) mediated this association. Baseline measures of body mass index, hedonic food reward, and dietary intake were collected from one hundred overweight and obese adolescents. Data were analyzed using mixture modeling. Mediation at varying levels of hedonic hunger was …
Age, Plans To Move, And Perceptions Of Collective Efficacy, Wesley B. Jeffrey
Age, Plans To Move, And Perceptions Of Collective Efficacy, Wesley B. Jeffrey
Theses and Dissertations
There is a growing recognition that to more fully understand the complex dynamics of neighborhoods and communities, we must effectively link the micro- and macro-level dimensions of community processes. As important as collective efficacy at the macro level has been shown to be, literature looking at factors shaping the individual-level experience is relatively scarce. Since the latent community attribute of collective efficacy is largely measured as a function of individual perceptions, understanding what affects the individual is vital, especially in light of within-neighborhood heterogeneity. In this study, I use insights from social disorganization theory, the systemic model to community attachment, …

An Algorithm For Symbolic Computing Of Singular Limits Of Dynamical Systems, Dane Jordan Bjork
An Algorithm For Symbolic Computing Of Singular Limits Of Dynamical Systems, Dane Jordan Bjork
Theses and Dissertations
The manifold boundary approximation method, MBAM is a new technique used in approximating systems of equations using parameter reduction. This method and other approximation methods are introduced and described. Several current issues in performing MBAM are discussed in further detail. These issues significantly slow down the process of MBAM and create a barrier of entry for those wishing to use the method without a strong background in mathematics. A solution is proposed to automatically reparameterize models and evaluate specific types of variables approaching limits -- significantly speeding up the process of MBAM. An implementation of the solution is discussed.

Shifting Species Boundaries: Mytilus Spp. On The Pacific Coast, Melinda Kathleen Wheelock
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The two species of bay mussel present on the Pacific coast of North America, Mytilus trossulus and M. galloprovincialis, are morphologically very similar and typically difficult to distinguish by external characters. Mytilus trossulus is native to the eastern Pacific, and occurs in bays, estuaries and the outer coast from central California to Alaska. Its introduced counterpart, M. galloprovincialis, has replaced M. trossulus in southern California, and is found as far north as Humboldt Bay. Previous studies have shown that these sibling species co-occur and form genetic hybrids in central California between Monterey Bay and Humboldt Bay, though the exact hybrid …
Dynamics And Interactions Of Membrane Proteins, Azamat Galiakhmetov
Dynamics And Interactions Of Membrane Proteins, Azamat Galiakhmetov
Dissertations (1934 -)
Membrane proteins are members of the class of proteins that perform their functions while being associated with a lipid bilayer. In the cell, they serve as transporters, receptors, anchors and enzymes. The domain organisation of these proteins suggests importance of lipid membrane and protein-lipid interactions for protein function. The requirement of a membrane mimic and the level of its resemblance to a native one for protein investigation makes the studies of membrane proteins a challenging project. My research work is focusing on the biophysical and biochemical studies of membrane proteins. This dissertation outlines two separate projects, each with their own …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Evaluating the safety maturity of construction contractors before awarding the contract is an effective strategy that many owners have started to implement. Given the importance of workplace safety, awarding the contract to safer contractors can enhance project performance outcomes in terms of safety, quality, cost, and schedule. Safety maturity is one quality of a construction organization encompassing interdependent factors that can be used to evaluate expected safety performance. However, there is no formal decision-making framework available in literature that owners can use to evaluate contractor safety maturity. The present study aims to bridge this gap in safety knowledge by proposing …

In 2017, district courts decided several issues that the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit had never addressed. The United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia concluded that the Clean Water Act's (CWA) prohibition on the discharge of pollutants into waters of the United States without a permit extended to discharges into groundwater with a "direct hydrological connection" to surface waters within the Act's scope. The court also concluded that a state-permitted land application system, whereby wastewater is sprayed onto fields as means of treatment and disposal, constituted a "point source" within the meaning …
