Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (Dic), Nicholas A. Brown
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (Dic), Nicholas A. Brown
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired syndrome characterized by intravascular activation of coagulation. There is a wide variety of etiologies that can lead to DIC, with sepsis at the forefront. DIC presents in just under 20% of ICU admissions, with mortality rates up to 78%. The following poster will provide a comprehensive review behind this complex disease process, highlighting the underlying pathophysiology, significance, and implications for nursing practice.
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Whitney Smith
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Whitney Smith
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common, chronic disease process that has historically affected adults but is becoming more common among children and adolescents due to rising rates of childhood obesity. While the primary risk factor for NAFLD is obesity, other metabolic conditions including dyslipidemias and insulin-resistance may also contribute to increased risk of NAFLD also. NAFLD occurs when excess triglycerides and free fatty acids (FFA) infiltrate the liver and are stored as lipids inside hepatocytes. In addition to the effects of decreased liver function from damaged cells, NAFLD also contributes to increased levels of inflammatory cytokines that further …

Fatty acid drug discovery (FADD) is defined as the identification of novel, specialized bioactive mediators that are derived from fatty acids and have precise pharmacological/therapeutic potential. A number of reports indicate that dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids and limited intake of omega-6 promotes overall health benefits. In 1929, Burr and Burr indicated the significant role of essential fatty acids for survival and functional health of many organs. In reference to specific dietary benefits of differential omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids (DHA and EPA) are transformed to monohydroxy, dihydroxy, trihydroxy, and other complex mediators during infection, injury, and …
The Effect Of Destoning And Enzymatic Pretreatments On The Biofuel Production From Olive Cake, Patrick Tai
The Effect Of Destoning And Enzymatic Pretreatments On The Biofuel Production From Olive Cake, Patrick Tai
Master's Theses
More than 16,000 tons of olive cake was produced in the United States in 2017. Olive cake is a by-product of olive oil extraction, which has limited animal feed potential, and poses an environmental threat when landfilled due to its high organic load and polyphenol content. This residue has potential for biofuel (bioethanol and biomethane) production because it is rich in polysaccharides such as pectin, hemicellulose, and cellulose. Yet, olive cake contains olive stones that can impede its conversion to biofuel. Therefore, two methods of destoning, centrifugation and screening by horizontal screw press, were first compared. Both methods removed an …

Rexinoids are powerful ligands that bind to retinoid-X-receptors (RXRs) and show great promise as therapeutics for a wide range of diseases, including cancer. However, only one rexinoid, bexarotene (Targretin TM) has been successfully transitioned from the bench to the clinic and used to treat cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Our goal is to develop novel potent rexinoids with a less untoward side effect profile than bexarotene. To this end, we have synthesized a wide array of rexinoids with EC50 values and biological activity similar to bexarotene. In order to determine their suitability for additional downstream analysis, and to identify potential candidate …

Quinoline compounds have been extensively explored as anti-malaria and anti-cancer agents for decades and show profound functional bioactivities, however, the studies of these compounds in other medicinal fields have lagged dramatically. In this study, we report the development of a series of facilely accessible quinoline derivatives that display potent antibacterial activity against a panel of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacterial strains, especially C. difficile. We also demonstrated that these molecules are effective in vivo against C. difficile. These results revealed that these types of quinoline compounds could serve as prototypes for the development of an appealing class of antibiotic …

The development of peptidomimetic helical foldamers with a wide repertoire of functions is of significant interest. Herein, we report the X‐ray crystal structures of a series of homogeneous l‐sulfono‐γ‐AA foldamers and elucidate their folding conformation at the atomic level. Single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography revealed that this class of oligomers fold into unprecedented dragon‐boat‐shaped and unexpected left‐handed helices, which are stabilized by the 14‐hydrogen‐bonding pattern present in all sequences. These l‐sulfono‐γ‐AApeptides have a helical pitch of 5.1 Å and exactly four side chains per turn, and the side chains lie perfectly on top of each other along the helical axis. 2D NMR …

Arylalkylamine N-acyltransferases (AANATs) catalyze the formation of an N-acylamide from an acyl-CoA thioester and an amine. One well known example is the production of N-acetylserotonin from acetyl-CoA and serotonin, a reaction in the melatonin biosynthetic pathway from tryptophan. AANATs have been identified from a variety of vertebrates and invertebrates. Considerable efforts have been devoted to the mammalian AANAT because a cell-permeable inhibitor specifically targeted against this enzyme could prove useful to treat diseases related to dysfunction in melatonin production. Insects are an interesting model for the study of AANATs because more than one isoform is typically expressed …

© 2018 American Society for Microbiology. Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, encodes almost a dozen predicted polyketide (PK) biosynthetic gene clusters. Many of these are regulated by LuxR-I-type acyl-homoserine (AHL) quorum-sensing systems. One of the PK gene clusters, the mal gene cluster, is conserved in the close relative Burkholderia thailandensis. The B. thailandensis mal genes code for the cytotoxin malleilactone and are regulated by a genetically linked LuxR-type transcription factor, MalR. Although AHLs typically interact with LuxR-type proteins to modulate gene transcription, the B. thailandensis MalR does not appear to be an AHL receptor. Here, we characterize the …

The Behavior Of Metropolis-Coupled Markov Chains When Sampling Rugged Phylogenetic Distributions, Jeremy M. Brown, Robert C. Thomson

© The Author(s) 2018. Bayesian phylogenetic inference relies on the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to provide numerical approximations of high-dimensional integrals and estimate posterior probabilities. However, MCMC performs poorly when posteriors are very rugged (i.e., regions of high posterior density are separated by regions of low posterior density). One technique that has become popular for improving numerical estimates from MCMC when distributions are rugged is Metropolis coupling (MC3). InMC3, additional chains are employed to sample flattened transformations of the posterior and improve mixing. Here, we highlight several underappreciated behaviors of MC3. Notably, estimated posterior probabilities may be …

© 2018 The Obesity Society Objective: Multiple factors contribute to the rising rates of obesity and to difficulties in weight reduction that exist in the worldwide population. Caloric intake via sugar-sweetened beverages may be influential. This study tested the hypothesis that liquid sucrose intake promotes obesity by increasing serum insulin levels and tissue lipid accumulation. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were given 30% sucrose in liquid form. Changes in weight gain, body composition, energy expenditure (EE), and tissue lipid content were measured. Results: Mice drinking sucrose gained more total body mass (TBM), had greater fat mass, and displayed impaired glucose tolerance relative …

This scoping review examined research on transitions among emerging adults, 18- to 30-year-olds, to identify designs, populations, frameworks, transition types, and transition outcomes. A librarian conducted the search, yielding 2067 articles. Using predefined criteria, teams screened abstracts and reviewed articles, with 82% to 100% interrater agreement. Data from the final 160 articles were placed in evidence tables and summarized. Most frequently, the studies had exploratory-descriptive designs (69%), nondiagnosed samples (58%), no theoretical frameworks (58%), developmental transitions (34%), and health-related behavior outcomes (34%). This transition research is in an early stage of knowledge development and would benefit from further theory development.

© 2018 The effective management of sedimentary coastlines demands a good understanding of the seasonal and inter-annual cycles in beach volumes, as well as the potential impact of extreme events. This paper uses a 10-year time series (2007–2017) of supra- and intertidal beach volume from exposed and cross-shore transport-dominated sites to examine the extent to which beach behaviour is coherent over a relatively large region (100-km stretch of coast) and predictably coupled to incident wave forcing. Over the study period, 10 beaches, exposed to similar wave/tide conditions, but having different sediment characteristics, beach lengths and degrees of embaymentisation, showed coherent …

Motivation: The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene.
Main types of variables included: The database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, the database contains …

Most studies of adaptive radiation in animals focus on resource competition as the primary driver of trait divergence. The roles of other ecological interactions in shaping divergent phenotypes during such radiations have received less attention. We evaluate natural enemies as primary agents of diversifying selection on the phenotypes of an actively diverging lineage of gall midges on tall goldenrod. In this system, the gall of the midge consists of a biotrophic fungal symbiont that develops on host-plant leaves and forms distinctly variable protective carapaces over midge larvae. Through field studies, we show that fungal gall morphology, which is induced by …

PURPOSE. Autosomal dominant neovascular inflammatory vitreoretinopathy (ADNIV) is a devastating inherited autoimmune disease of the eye that displays features commonly seen in other eye diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa and diabetic retinopathy. ADNIV is caused by a gain-of-function mutation in Calpain-5 (CAPN5), a calcium-dependent cysteine protease. Very little is known about the normal function of CAPN5 in the adult retina, and there are conflicting results regarding its role during mammalian embryonic development. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an excellent animal model for studying vertebrate development and tissue regeneration, and represents a novel model to explore the …

Understanding the correspondence between ambient temperature and insect development is necessary to forecast insect phenology under novel environments. In the face of climate change, both conservation and pest control efforts require accurate phenological predictions. Here, we compare a suite of degree-day models to assess their ability to predict the phenology of a common, oligophagous butterfly, the silver-spotted skipper, Epargyreus clarus (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae). To estimate model parameters, we used development time of eggs and larvae reared in the laboratory at six constant temperatures ranging from 8 to 38 °C and on two host plants of contrasting quality (kudzu and wisteria). …

Attitudes On Medical Ethics Of Criminal Neurointerventional Treatment, Haley Nicole Whitaker
Senior Honors Theses
As contemporary scientific advancements offer the opportunity to manipulate processes of the human body at a higher degree of invasiveness than ever before, a number of bioethical concerns are raised. One significant concern is how to discern the acceptable integration of advancements in neurologically-based interventions into the criminal justice system. Past literature supports the idea that there are several variables that interact to form a global conversation on the ethics of compromising a criminal’s freedom of mind for the purposes of sentencing or rehabilitation. Attitudes toward the current criminal justice system and the current uses of neurointerventions are significantly influential, …
Radical Joy Performed Into Action: A Study Of Feminist Performance Art, Kaylee Simonson
Radical Joy Performed Into Action: A Study Of Feminist Performance Art, Kaylee Simonson
Honors College Theses
Although traditionally excluded from the art world as from all major institutions, women artists staked their claim by revolutionizing performance art as a medium in the 1960s and 70s. By integrating life and art, feminist artists developed the powerful ideology that “the personal is political,” especially in art. From this foundation of radical assertion, feminist artists explored, resisted, and deconstructed their struggles. Contemporary feminist artists not only have different battles to fight, they fight them in a different format: digital media. In this project, I seek to explore the ways performance artists before me have used the medium of performance …
The Association Between Attitudes Towards High Intensity Exercise And Self-Esteem, Emily Fullhardt
The Association Between Attitudes Towards High Intensity Exercise And Self-Esteem, Emily Fullhardt
Honors College Theses
There has been much research that has examined the association between exercise and self-esteem. Specifically, research suggests that there is a positive association of high intensity exercise, including running, weight lifting, and interval training, with self-esteem in both children and adults. However, much of this past research involved experiments where an exercise regimen was introduced to test cause and effect of exercise and self-esteem. Further, much of the past research focused on adults outside of the United States (Hasanpour, Yìğiter, Yook). I aim to test whether there are associations of preferences for and attitudes towards high intensity exercise with self-esteem …
The Positive No: Identify Optimistic Ways To Create A Healthy Environment As A Mother Suffering From Postpartum Depression, Mary Ellen Yep
The Positive No: Identify Optimistic Ways To Create A Healthy Environment As A Mother Suffering From Postpartum Depression, Mary Ellen Yep
All Student-Created Educational Resources
This handout informs the audience of how to create a healthy environment post pregnancy. Postpartum depression affects so many mothers yet they have no information on how to cope with these newly arrived symptoms. This handout gives positive suggestions of how to implement healthy defaults into a mother’s daily life. Scheduling, exercise, hydration, and nutrition will be discussed.

Variation in leaf micromorphology can aid delimitation of taxonomically difficult groups. The woody genus Metrosideros (Myrtaceae) dominates Hawai'i's native forests and comprises striking, predominantly infraspecific, macromorphological variation, including many forms unrecognized in current taxonomic treatments. On taxonomically rich O'ahu, 10 taxa (varieties or unnamed morphotypes of M. polymorpha and other species) occur in a predictable sequence with overlapping ranges from low to high elevation along the numerous leeward ridges of the Ko'olau Range. We used scanning electron and light microscopy to examine mature, nonsenescing sun leaves from each of these 10 taxa. Parametric and nonparametric tests were used to compare …

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes is a serious health problem affecting approximately 29.1 million individuals in the United States. Another 86 million have prediabetes. The development and implementation of lifestyle modifications such as physical activity for these persons are among the most effective methods for prevention and treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine relationships between glycemic control (HbA1c) and cardiovascular fitness (peak maximal oxygen uptake [VO2 peak] and ventilatory threshold [VT]) in overweight/obese subjects with and without type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In addition, the influences of body mass index (BMI) and insulin sensitivity (homeostasis model assessment [HOMA %S]) on …

© 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Objectives: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective cancer treatment that uses photosensitizers, light, and oxygen to destroy malignant cells. Porphyrins, and in particular the cationic derivatives, are the most investigated photosensitizers for PDT. In this context, it is important to study new methodologies to develop efficient cationic photosensitizers for use in PDT. Materials and Methods: New porphyrins bearing cationic epoxymethylaryl groups were synthesized and characterized. Their cellular uptake, intracellular localization, and phototoxicity were evaluated in human HEp2 cells, and compared with their methylated analogs. Results: All cationic porphyrins were efficient generators of singlet oxygen, with …
