The Social Context Of Women's Sustained Participation In Activism, Susan Paterson Dec 2018

The Social Context Of Women's Sustained Participation In Activism, Susan Paterson

Open Access Dissertations

Recently, the resurgence of interest in feminist activism has been discussed by media and news outlets. It is still relatively unknown what contextual factors affect sustained participation, as well as how women from different backgrounds sustain activism in the face of compounding oppressions. This grounded theory explores the contexts of sustained participation through two research questions: (1) what are the contextual factors that influence women's sustained participation in activism?, and (2) how is the dynamic between identity and context reflected in sustained participation in activism? Nine women activists in Miami-Dade County were interviewed about their experiences in feminist movements, specifically …

Polycomb Complexes Associate With Enhancers To Regulate Oncogenic Pathways In Cancer, Ho Lam (Candy) Chan Dec 2018

Polycomb Complexes Associate With Enhancers To Regulate Oncogenic Pathways In Cancer, Ho Lam (Candy) Chan

Open Access Dissertations

The Polycomb repressive complexes play diverse and essential roles in cell fate decisions, embryonic development, stem cell pluripotency, and gene regulation. There are two main Polycomb complexes in mammalian cells, Polycomb Repressive Complex 1 and 2 (PRC1 and PRC2). PRC1 can be further subdivided into canonical and non-canonical complexes depending on its composition (cPRC1 and ncPRC1). Historically, Polycomb complexes have been mostly associated with maintaining gene repression carried out by its histone-modifying and chromatin-remodeling capabilities. Specifically, PRC1 can catalyze mono-ubiquitination of histone H2A on lysine 119 while PRC2 trimethylates histone H3 on lysine 27. Both these histone marks are associated …

How Does The New Urban Agenda Align With Comprehensive Planning In U.S. Cities? A Case Study Of Asheville, North Carolina, Matthew Cohen, Geoffrey Habron Dec 2018

How Does The New Urban Agenda Align With Comprehensive Planning In U.S. Cities? A Case Study Of Asheville, North Carolina, Matthew Cohen, Geoffrey Habron

Earth and Environmental Sciences Publications

Despite growing interests in sustainable urban development, planning lacks unifying themes or directives for achieving sustainability in cities. While professional rating systems provide some guidance, they can be context-specific by country and may at best target weak sustainability as their intended outcome. The United Nations’ New Urban Agenda attempts to offer a singular vision for urban sustainability, and its language appears flexible enough to apply across contexts. In this research, we explore the extent that emergent themes from the New Urban Agenda can guide urban planning for sustainability, specifically in the United States (U.S.). We develop inductive codes from the …

Population Genomic Analysis Of North American Eastern Wolves (Canic Lycaon) Support Their Conservation Priority Status, Elizabeth Heppenheimer, Ryan Harrigan, Linda Rutledge, Klaus-Peter Koepfli, Alexandra L. Decandia, Kristin Brzeski, Et. Al.

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

The threatened eastern wolf is found predominantly in protected areas of central Ontario and has an evolutionary history obscured by interbreeding with coyotes and gray wolves, which challenges its conservation status and subsequent management. Here, we used a population genomics approach to uncover spatial patterns of variation in 281 canids in central Ontario and the Great Lakes region. This represents the first genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) dataset with substantial sample sizes of representative populations. Although they comprise their own genetic cluster, we found evidence of eastern wolf dispersal outside of the boundaries of protected areas, in that the frequency …

How Soil Salinity Affects The Stomatal Conductance Of Baccharis Salicifolia (Mulefat/Seepwillow), Andrew Kim, Caroline Wilkerson, Mahala Bayless, Peter Du Dec 2018

How Soil Salinity Affects The Stomatal Conductance Of Baccharis Salicifolia (Mulefat/Seepwillow), Andrew Kim, Caroline Wilkerson, Mahala Bayless, Peter Du

Featured Research

This is a poster presentation demonstrating the project our group has been working on. We hypothesize that the stomatal conductance of mulefat will decrease as soil salinity increases in both pre-rain and post-rain conditions because the plant tries to absorb salt water. However, the salt water cannot pass through plant tissue and draws water out of the plant. Since plant requires water for photosynthesis, water being drawn out means less water is available for the plant to do photosynthesis. We have tested our hypothesis by collecting soil samples in Legacy park, and recorded stomatal conductance by using a leaf porometer

A Comparison Of Different Methods Of Dehydration On Baccharis Salicifolia, Michael Nicholas, Sinjun Hong

Featured Research

Baccharis salicifolia is a native riparian plant living in many places near to the Santa Monica Mountains. One of these locations is Legacy park, which has had many events effect it that has led to some very unfortunate changes. The park’s soil was tested earlier this year by a group of undergraduate students lead by Dr. Stephen Davis and was found to have a very high salinity level. The plants in the park appeared to be struggling to survive and had signs of dehydration and wilting. This led to us questioning the types of dehydration of the plants. Areas of …

In the Santa Monica Mountains, there are two main vegetation types: chaparral, which makes up __% of plants in these mountains, and coastal sagebrush, which makes up __%. Despite California’s acute environmental stress, both of these plants manage to survive, and even thrive in some cases. We were interested in seeing if in spite of these vast anatomical and physiological differences, these plants were able to survive at similar health rates, measured in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and electron transport rate (ETR). We have decided to choose 2 plants from 2 different leaf types of different vegetation types: Malosma laurina …

Acidity at surface of cancer cells is a hallmark of tumor microenvironments, which does not depend on tumor perfusion, thus it may serve as a general biomarker for targeting tumor cells. We used the pH (low) insertion peptide (pHLIP) for decoration of liposomes and niosomes. pHLIP senses pH at the surface of cancer cells and inserts into the membrane of targeted cells, and brings nanomaterial to close proximity of cellular membrane. DMPC liposomes and Tween 20 or Span 20 niosomes with and without pHLIP in their coating were fully characterized in order to obtain fundamental understanding on nanocarrier features and …

Comparison Of Photosynthesis, Stomatal Conductance, And Water Potential Between Native Rhus Integrifolia And Invasive Nicotiana Glauca, Tiffany J. Egbo, Emma J. Navarro, Malaun A. Phillips, Cameron I. Zohary

Featured Research

Invasive species, such as Nicotiana glauca, are a prominent part of the Santa Monica Mountains, and could be responsible for displacing native species such as Rhus integrifolia. It was observed in the field that Nicotiana glauca was doing better than Rhus integrifolia, so our group decided to indirectly test this. Because of the invasiveness of its species, it is essential to measure the health of a native species to see if the invasive species is posing as a massive threat. Water potential, stomatal conductance, fluorescence, photosynthetic rates and electron transport rates were compared among the two plants …

Optimization Of Light Irradiance During The Early Life Of Sexually-Produced Porites Astreoides And Agaricia Agaricites Recruits, Nicholas J. Mcmahon

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Current solutions of coral restoration rely mainly on fragmentation. Though a reliable technique, this asexual form of reproduction does not benefit the genetic diversity of the coral reef. With many global and local stressors threatening corals’ existence, the resiliency of corals to future ocean conditions depends highly on sexual reproduction to produce new genotypes. New technology allows coral spawning/larval release, larval settlement and rearing to be carried out in an aquarium system. Many of the techniques necessary to maintain coral recruits are well-established, however the effects of light intensity remain to be studied for these early life stages. Newly …

Empirical Validation And Comparison Of The Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (Hycom) Between The Gulf Of Mexico And The Tongue Of The Ocean, Cynthia A. Cleveland

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Ocean models are increasingly able to synthesize a large temporal domain with fine spatial resolution. With this increase in functionality and availability, ocean models are in high demand by researchers, establishing a critical need for validating a model’s ability to represent interior ocean dynamics. Satellite measurements are typically used for validation, however these measurements are limited to the upper layers of the ocean and therefore satellite measurements of sea surface height and sea surface temperature are the most validated output parameters of three-dimensional ocean models. Unfortunately there is a paucity of model validation studies for the interior ocean. This study …

Minimal Influence Of Extracellular Dna On Molecular Surveys Of Marine Sedimentary Communities, Gustavo A. Ramírez, Steffen L. Jørgensen, Rui Zhao, Steven D’Hondt

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Extracellular DNA has been reported to comprise a large fraction of total DNA in near-seafloor sediment. However, the potential effect of extracellular DNA, arising from dead or moribund cells, on sequencing surveys is a critical concern that has largely not been addressed for marine sedimentary habitats. To address this concern, we interrogated freshly collected Arctic and Pacific sediment for extracellular 16S rRNA genes using the photoactive DNA-binding dye Propidium Monoazide. Significant differences between relative abundances of total (intracellular + extracellular) Bacterial 16S rRNA genes and relative abundances of intracellular Bacterial 16S rRNA genes are only detected in three of twelve …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nanoparticle technology is gaining traction in many different industries, particularly in imaging and the medical industries, and thus it becomes increasing important to understand how particles will affect the body. This is why we want to look at the way nanoparticles interact with lipid membranes, since lipids play vital roles in biological processes such as stabilizing the distal airways in our lungs in low volume situations. Knowing how nanoparticles will interact with these lipids can give us insights into the potentials cytotoxicity of the particles, and how other agents, such as viruses act near/on a lipid membrane. In thisthesis, we …

Trustworthiness Appraisal Deficits In Borderline Personality Disorder Are Associated With Prefrontal Cortex, Not Amygdala, Impairment, Eric A. Fertuck, Jack Grinband, J. John Mann, Joy Hirsch, Kevin Ochsner, Paul Pilkonis, Jeff Erbe, Barbara Stanley

Publications and Research

Background

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is associated with sensitivity to signals of interpersonal threats and misplaced trust in others. The amygdala, an integral part of the threat evaluation and response network, responds to both fear- and trust-related stimuli in non-clinical samples, and is more sensitive to emotional stimuli in BPD compared to controls. However, it is unknown whether the amygdalar response can account for deficits of trust and elevated sensitivity to interpersonal threat in BPD.

Methods

Facial stimuli were presented to 16 medication-free women with BPD and 17 demographically-matched healthy controls (total n = 33). Participants appraised fearfulness or trustworthiness …

Fisheries Research Articles

Background

Understanding the factors shaping population genetic structure is important for evolutionary considerations as well as for management and conservation. While studies have revealed the importance of palaeogeographic changes in shaping phylogeographic patterns in multiple marine fauna, the role of reproductive behaviour is rarely considered in reef fishes. We investigated the population genetics of three commercially important aggregating grouper species in the Indo-West Pacific, namely the camouflage grouper Epinephelus polyphekadion, the squaretail coral grouper Plectropomus areolatus, and the common coral trout P. leopardus, with similar life histories but distinct spatio-temporal characteristics in their patterns of forming spawning aggregations. …

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

The anticancer activity of 8-hydroxyquinolines relies on complex formation with redox active copper and iron ions. Here we employ UV-visible spectrophotometry and EPR spectroscopy to compare proton dissociation and complex formation processes of the reference compound 8-hydroxyquinoline (Q-1) and three related Mannich bases to reveal possible correlations with biological activity. The studied derivatives harbor a CH2-N moiety at position 7 linked to morpholine (Q-2), piperidine (Q-3), and chlorine and fluorobenzylamino (Q-4) substituents. Solid phase structures of Q-3, Q-4·HCl·H2O, [(Cu(HQ-2)2)2]·(CH3OH)2·Cl4·(H2O)2, [Cu(Q-3)2]·Cl2 and [Cu(HQ-4)2(CH3OH)]·ZnCl4·CH3OH were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, the redox properties of the copper and iron complexes …
