Bias, Corruption & Obstruction, Oh My: The Due Process "Shocks The Conscience" Limit On Investigative & Prosecutorial Conduct, Elizabeth Price Foley

Due process guarantees the government will not exercise its power in a manner falling below the standard of civilized decency. Under Supreme Court precedent, behavior by government officials, including prosecutors and investigators, that objectively may be characterized as outrageous, arbitrary, capricious, biased, vindictive, or conscience shocking violates due process. Whether officials’ behavior crosses the constitutional threshold requires an assessment of the totality of the circumstances and is, accordingly, a factually sensitive inquiry. Facts disinterred thus far suggest that the “collusion” narrative—alleging that Russia and Donald Trump’s campaign colluded to throw the 2016 presidential election—may have a corrupt or politically biased …

Residential Proximity To Electronic Dance Music Nightclubs And Associations With Substance Use, Sexual Behaviors, And Related Problems, Mance E. Buttram, Maria E. Pagano, Steven P. Kurtz
CAHSS Faculty Articles
This study examines the association between proximity of place of residence to preferred nightclub and substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and related problems, among a sample of 498 young adult substance users in Miami who report regular nightclub participation. Hierarchal linear models and logistic regressions were constructed to examine the impact of residential proximity to preferred nightclub on risk behaviors. Compared with participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub, participants residing further away reported higher intensities of alcohol and cocaine use (p < .01), greater condomless vaginal sex frequencies (p < .001), and more substance dependence symptoms (p < .05). Conversely, participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub had higher likelihood of arrest history (p < .05) than participants residing further away. Results suggest that participants residing further from their preferred nightclubs may be more invested in the nightclub outing and, therefore, engage in more risk behaviors.

Transformative Mentoring is an intensive youth development model that seeks to transform the mentality and behavior of the most at-risk or hardest to reach delinquent youth and provide them with healthy relationships with positive adults. A core element of this approach is the belief that communities are best positioned to respond to the needs of youth given the opportunity and the resources. The model centers around the pairing of youth with specially trained adults who have had relevant life experiences, most commonly previous involvement in the criminal justice systems, called Credible Messengers.

Reliability And Predictive Validity Of Screener/Assessment Tools In Nebraska Juvenile Diversion, Katrina Rufino, Lindsey Wylie, Chelsea W. Harris, Jordan Carpenter, Juvenile Justice Institute, University Of Nebraska At Omaha
Reports
Juvenile diversion is offered in most counties throughout Nebraska to eligible youth; and although state guidelines require the use of a screening or assessment tool, the tools utilized are not standardized or uniform statewide. This report quantifies whether the various tools are being reliably administered and are effectively predicting diversion completion and future system involvement. The Juvenile Justice Institute gathered item-level risk/needs screener and assessment data from all juvenile diversion programs receiving Community-based Aid (CBA) funds. Overall, 3,916 youth were assessed for a juvenile diversion program between July 1st, 2015 and June 30th, 2017. The Youth Level of Service Inventory/Case …

Life Partner Perceptions Of The Emotional Impact Of Stuttering, Athanasia Svenning
Life Partner Perceptions Of The Emotional Impact Of Stuttering, Athanasia Svenning
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which life partners understand the emotional impact stuttering has on their loved one who stutters. This was accomplished by administering the Speech Situation Checklist - Emotional Reaction (SSC-ER), a subtest of the Behavior Assessment Battery (BAB; Vanryckeghem & Brutten, 2018) via Qualtrics, an online survey software, to the participants who stutter and a modified version of the SSC-ER to their life partner. No significant differences and a positive correlation were observed between groups (people who stutter (PWS) and their life partner (LP) as it relates to total score …

Criminality Of Women, Danielle Orr
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Criminological theories construct the basis of criminology, as these theories are used to develop preventative and rehabilitative measures. These criminological theories are developed based on standardized testing and empirical research conducted by theorists within the field. At a glance, the theories developed should cover all forms of crimes conducted by a range of individuals. However, a review of the literature determined further analysis of criminological theories must be conducted. This study looks at theories that are most common within criminology and determine whether or not women are equally represented and depicted. By analyzing strain, labeling, biological, and social control theories, …
