Promoting Retirement Security For Low-Income Workers In Illinois: An Analysis And Lessons For Other States, Philip C. Aka, Chidera V. Oku, Murna Habila
Akron Law Review
This Article makes suggestions for promoting retirement security among low-income workers in Illinois with pointed lessons for workers in other U.S. states. Adapting a framework from a previous study by the principal author, the Article portrays retirement preparedness for low-income workers in Illinois as a function of changes in Social Security, employer-sponsored pensions, and personal assets—the famed “three-legged stool” of retirement income—synchronized with reduction of disparities between socioeconomic groups in education, healthcare, and housing. Many studies on retirement security focus excessively on the national level sometimes at the expense of the subnational phenomena that complicate retirement security and increase the …

The Hardship That Is Internet Deprivation And What It Means For Sentencing: Development Of The Internet Sanction And Connectivity For Prisoners, Mirko Bagaric, Nick Fischer, Dan Hunter
Akron Law Review
Twenty years ago, the internet was a novel tool. Now it is such an ingrained part of most people’s lives that they experience and exhibit signs of anxiety and stress if they cannot access it. Non-accessibility to the internet can also tangibly set back peoples’ social, educational, financial, and vocational pursuits and interests. In this Article, we argue that the sentencing law needs to be reformed to adapt to the fundamental changes in human behavior caused by the internet.
We present three novel and major implications for the sentencing law and practice in the era of the internet. First, we …

Akron Law Review
Professor Metze dissects the American Bar Association report, September 2013, entitled Evaluating Fairness and Accuracy in State Death Penalty Systems: The Texas Capital Punishment Assessment Report—An Analysis of Texas’s Death Penalty Laws, Procedures and Practices. This Report was produced by the ABA’s Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities, specifically the Death Penalty Due Process Review Project, which identified 12 inadequacies in the Texas Capital Punishment System, recommended changes, and evaluated compliance. Now, four years and two legislative sessions later, this Article explores what Texas has done in the interim to improve its death penalty process. Incredibly, the Article concludes …

Utilization Of Social Networking Sites: Engaging In Online Social Comparisons And Differences Among Self-Esteem, Life Satisfaction, And Affect Within College Students, Nicole Lynn Garza
Theses and Dissertations
The Western culture has constant access to technology which enhances their capability to connect to social media. Research indicates that the college population is one demographic that utilizes the Internet and social networking sites (SNSs) the most; this increased frequency of usage puts the students at a greater risk for experiencing negative consequences. Prior research suggests frequency of use as well as type of social comparisons made, upward or downward, while using SNSs play a role in determining one’s self-esteem, life satisfaction, and overall psychological wellbeing. As previous studies have not focused on standardizing the target or the control condition, …

This article documents the development of a community-based drug intervention for low- to mild-risk drug users who surrendered as part of the Philippine government's anti-drug campaign. It highlights the importance of developing evidence-informed drug recovery interventions that are appropriate to the Asian culture and to developing economies. Interviews and consultations with users and community stakeholders reveal the need for an intervention that would improve the drug recovery skills and life skills of users. Evidence-based interventions were adapted using McKleroy and colleagues’ (2006) Map of Adaptation Process (MAP) framework. The resulting intervention reflected the country's collectivist culture, relational values, propensity for …

Study Of Gender As Social Practice And Tokenism In An Indian It Company, Geetanjali Kaushik, Alison Pullen
Journal of International Women's Studies
This systematic study is focused on examining the women’s gendered identity work in an Indian IT company. The research builds a body of work that explores female tokenism at senior positions and highlights tension in practicing gender. Research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with twenty two women employees utilizing the case study approach. A patriarchal Indian society and social construction of IT as feminine and rewarding for women is responsible for an increase of women participation in it. However, there is evidence of exclusion at all levels of hierarchy in the firm on accounts of gendering and social practices. There …

Source Recruitment In The Cyber Domain, Joshua Allan Alexander
Source Recruitment In The Cyber Domain, Joshua Allan Alexander
Theses and Dissertations
Cyber-crime and cyber criminality are a growing threat in today’s society. As people gradually become more interconnected through technological advances, the potential for cyber-crime grows. As this issue expands into broader territories, new methods must be implemented as a means to combat it. One of the issues facing those attempting to police cyber-crime is that it is easier to hide and cover the evidence trail for crimes committed in cyber-space than it is for crimes committed outside it. Because of this, law enforcement and intelligence agencies are turning to a new tool in the fight against cyber-crime: sources. However, the …

Theses and Dissertations
The disciplines of translation and interpreting have long been testament of the power that the transfer of words can impart on a civilization. The disciplines are broken down into specialized fields that each have their own requirements to implement the use of interpreters and translators in various sections of life. Legal translation and court interpreting fall under one of these specialized fields. The implementation of interpreters and translators within the federal court setting can be found in United States’ code and requires an extensive and rigorous training and examination to fulfill the line of work.
