The Impact Of Education Expenditures On Income Inequality: Evidence From Us States, Bryanna Seefeldt Apr 2018

The Impact Of Education Expenditures On Income Inequality: Evidence From Us States, Bryanna Seefeldt

Honors Projects in Economics

While the effect of various types of government expenditures on income inequality has been studied extensively, whether education expenditures impacts income inequality is less clear. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between education expenditures and income inequality. Specifically, I explore the impact of tertiary versus primary and secondary education spending on income inequality using panel data for 50 US states over the period 1987-2015. Using an ordinary least squares model with time and state fixed effects, I find that total and disaggregated education expenditures have a significant inequality-reducing effect on the income distribution. The findings support …

Police Lineups And Eyewitness Identification, Alessandra Ricigliano Apr 2018

Police Lineups And Eyewitness Identification, Alessandra Ricigliano

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

Improper police lineups often lead to the misidentification of a suspect in particular cases. These mistakes could potentially have detrimental effects on someone’s freedom because eyewitness identifications hold so much weight in court proceedings. If a witness or victim is certain they can identify the suspect, jurors are likely to believe them whether the witness is right or wrong. Eyewitness misidentification is one of the leading causes of wrongful convictions (The Innocence Project, 2017). The current research employs qualitative in depth interviews with police officers from local and state departments. The interviews asked about police procedures for conducting simultaneous and …

An Analysis Of The Unintended Effects Of The Amber Alert System, Josiah Bloomquist Apr 2018

An Analysis Of The Unintended Effects Of The Amber Alert System, Josiah Bloomquist

Honors Capstones

Capstone submitted as a graduate requirement for the BSU Honors Program. The capstone encompasses an analysis of the majority of research done up to this point on the America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response System (AMBER). It brings up and discusses the significance of research done and the unintentional effects (both positive and negative) of the implication of the system within the United States. In addition, there is a discussion and recommendations of the true facts of child abductions and AMBER that need to be more broadly dispersed to the general public to set straight incorrect, perceived notions of the capabilities …

Drunk Driving, Blood, And Breath: The Impact Of Birchfield V. North Dakota, Simon Bord Apr 2018

Drunk Driving, Blood, And Breath: The Impact Of Birchfield V. North Dakota, Simon Bord

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

Birchfield v. North Dakota is a landmark decision that will influence criminal procedure jurisprudence for years to come. Birchfield drew a distinction between the level of intrusiveness inherent in a breath test versus a blood test, upholding warrantless searches incident to a DUI arrest involving the former, but not the latter. In addition, the Court ruled that criminal penalties for refusing to consent to a blood draw were unconstitutional, but such penalties were an acceptable punishment for motorists who refused to undergo a breath test. Because Birchfield failed to establish a clear rule regarding the permissible scope of implied consent …

Benson, David M. “Stimulating Growth in Missional Understanding and Participation.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2018. 195 pp.

The purpose of this project was to initially assess the understanding of and attitude toward the mission of the Church among the active membership of Faith Lutheran Church in Springfield, Missouri. Then, through the implementation of a six week, biblically based course of study about the missio Dei and the mission of the Church, a sampling of the membership were given in-depth instruction to increase their missional awareness. Transitional Justice Legislation In Taiwain Before And During The Tsai Administration, Ernest Caldwell Apr 2018

Transitional Justice Legislation In Taiwain Before And During The Tsai Administration, Ernest Caldwell

Washington International Law Journal

The Republic of China on Taiwan (“Taiwan”) successfully and peacefully transitioned from authoritarian, one-party rule into a constitutional democracy in the early 1990s. However, due to the island’s complex international status and fraught relationship with China, as well as a rather conservative government approach to post-authoritarian discourse on past human rights violations, there has been relatively little scholarly interest in Anglophone academia on Taiwanese transitional justice issues. This Article seeks to deepen our understanding of East Asian transitional justice by examining the influence of post-democratization local conditions on the scope and language of transitional justice legislation during two phases of …

Restorative Practices In Schools And Its Relationship To Decreasing Discipline Infractions In African American Males, Leslie Muhammad Apr 2018

Restorative Practices In Schools And Its Relationship To Decreasing Discipline Infractions In African American Males, Leslie Muhammad

Dissertations

After passing the Zero Tolerance policies in 1994, schools began to have a substantial increase in the number of suspensions especially among African Americans and students of color. The researcher wanted to explore alternative methods to traditional discipline to ascertain if it would decrease the number of suspensions in African American boys. The purpose of this mixed-methods study on restorative practices is to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative discipline methods such as Restorative Practices and Mindful Activities in Midwestern urban inner city elementary school of African American male students, in third grade. There has been a true void in addressing …

Interpreting Black Women’S Narratives About The Foster Care System As Counterstorytelling, Shanae Nelson 18

Honor Scholar Theses

This research examines Black mothers’ narratives about the foster care system as counterstorytelling. This study analyzes the different ways Black mothers challenge systemic oppression through Critical Race Theory. This study offers a critical insight into the challenges Black mothers encounter with the foster care system and the different state actors that participate in maintaining common stereotype of Black mothers as poor parents. This project highlights the the role of the foster care system in suppressing Black mothers’ ability to care for and protect their children. This study critiques the state’s hypersurveillance and hypercriminalization of Black mothers and by extent, Black …

Exploring The Meaning Of Experiential Deaning, Margaret Martin Barry, Robert D. Dinerstein, Phyllis Goldfarb, Peggy Maisel, Linda H. Morton

Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the position of associate dean of experiential education in law schools across the country and the central role associate deans play in the changing landscape of legal education. Experiential deans have broad responsibility for overseeing law schools’ experiential education programs. Additional responsibilities differ between institutions, but range from leading efforts to comply with new ABA standards to overseeing the integration of experiential education into the broader curriculum. Analyzing survey data collected from associate experiential deans across the country, the authors find the structure, content, and authority of the position is under-developed. The authors make recommendations on how …

The Influence Of Government Defenders On Affirmative Civil Rights Enforcement, Alexander A. Reinert Apr 2018

The Influence Of Government Defenders On Affirmative Civil Rights Enforcement, Alexander A. Reinert

Articles

The federal government — in particular the Department of Justice — can be one of the most efficient and powerful vindicators of civil rights, while simultaneously one of the most effective advocates for imposing barriers to affirmative civil rights enforcement. At the same time that the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division (CRD) is entering federal court to vindicate important rights, attorneys in the Civil Division (either from Main Justice or in any number of U.S. Attorney’s offices) are appearing in court to prevent the same. No doubt a similar pattern can be observed in certain state governments that have active affirmative …

Hbcus Abroad: Design And Delivery Of The First-Year Haiti Experience, Javonni S. Mcglaurin

Capstone Collection

A need remains to create access to international educational opportunities for underrepresented populations. This need is due to lack of financial resources, fear of the unknown, and time away from home. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), such as, Saint Augustine’s University are working to restore the tradition of global scholarship by revitalizing the study abroad program to ensure its students truly embody the motto of “Transform, Excel, Lead”. In order to do this, the University is looking to increase the number of students exposed to and participating in study abroad programs. With an increasing presence of international students from …

Wrongful Convictions, Constitutional Remedies, And Nelson V. Colorado, Michael L. Wells Apr 2018

Wrongful Convictions, Constitutional Remedies, And Nelson V. Colorado, Michael L. Wells

Fordham Law Review

The end result in Nelson will satisfy nearly everyone’s sense of basic justice, at least insofar as the monetary refund is concerned. Still, the case is interesting not for its outcome but because the Court’s analysis touches on, but fails to fully engage with, subtle and difficult questions of constitutional law. This Article examines three important aspects of the case—outside of the procedural due process balancing question—that receive little, if any, attention in the Court’s opinion. Part I shows that the Court’s procedural due process analysis skips over the logical first step and doctrinally harder question of whether Nelson had …

Introductory Guide To Forensic Accounting: A Synthesis Of Scholarly Research And One Student’S Experience, Kayla Miles

Senior Theses

Introductory Guide to Forensic Accounting, found in Appendix A, was created to provide a concise blueprint for building a career in forensic accounting. It provides a lot of useful information for those seeking to gain a better understanding of the profession or learn how they can join it. The idea for this guide came as a result of my own journey to becoming a forensic accountant. I was initially introduced to the forensic accounting profession during a brief conversation with a forensic accountant working for the FBI while I was in high school. Following that conversation, I sought to …
