The Influence Of Information On Public Support For Solitary Confinement: A Test Of Belief Updating And Confirmation Bias, Kayla J. Labranche
The Influence Of Information On Public Support For Solitary Confinement: A Test Of Belief Updating And Confirmation Bias, Kayla J. Labranche
Dissertations and Theses
There is limited research measuring public opinion about the correctional practice of solitary confinement (SC). Given that public opinion can influence policies, it is important to determine whether or not one's beliefs can be updated upon receiving information about the use and effect of SC. Prior research indicates that public opinion is malleable, and thus, may be susceptible to modification. Though, people may be more willing to update their beliefs when the information they receive confirms their existing beliefs (i.e., confirmation bias). This study used an experimental design in which participants were asked to provide their opinions on a series …
Together But Unequal: A Study Of Undergraduate Student Persistence, Mia Phillips
Together But Unequal: A Study Of Undergraduate Student Persistence, Mia Phillips
Theses and Dissertations
The continued disparities that exist in achievement in higher education are becoming increasingly more complex yet are of paramount importance to understand and solve. Scholarly research focusing on things like persistence, attainment, attrition, engagement, and other factors that are major facets of student success have been studied for several decades by leading scholars in the field, however, these studies typically focus on the traditional face-to-face course environment. With the proliferation and exponential growth of online courses in the past decade, it is important to understand how students fare in what is becoming the primary mode of instruction for many college …

The Y-Screen Assay: Validation And Evaluation Of Subsequent Str Success, Kassandra Luyando
Student Theses
There are hundreds of untested sexual assault kits in police custody. As of 2017, New York State passed a law stating that all untested kits must be turned over to forensic laboratories to be tested, causing backlogs at laboratories to increase. The Y-Screen assay is a DNA extraction protocol which utilizes NaOH to rapidly lyse epithelial and sperm cells, and the Quantifiler Trio DNA quantification kit to detect the presence or absence of male DNA prior to standard sample processing. The Y-Screen assay is a commercial product used in this research to test a defined set of validation samples with …

R.I.P (Race In Portland), Christian J. Orellana Bauer
University Honors Theses
R.I.P (Race in Portland) is a music album centered around race in the United States as well as Portland, OR. The written portion of the album accompanying the music itself is a paper which investigates the history of politicized music, discusses the use of hip hop as a tool for social and political conversation as well as critiques of the genre, and draws connections between the album (R.I.P) and the genre itself. The work hopes to expand the conversation about race beyond the genre of hip hop which currently is mostly where this conversation takes place in the medium of …
Improving Transgender Policy For A More Equitable Workplace, Nicole M. Elias, Rana Lynn Johnson, Danny Ovando, Julia Ramirez
Improving Transgender Policy For A More Equitable Workplace, Nicole M. Elias, Rana Lynn Johnson, Danny Ovando, Julia Ramirez
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Sex and gender categories have become more fluid in recent years. With evolving understandings of sexual orientation and gender identity, public administrators are confronted with questions of how to craft policy and make decisions based on new conceptions of sex and gender for transgender employees. Policy and practice is especially challenging in the workplace where sex and gender encompass both personal and professional dimensions. Within the public sector, the federal government is recognized as a leader on these issues, and this work examines federal transgender policy to answer the following questions: 1) how are federal agencies addressing transgender issues in …

Discussing Difficult Topics—Drawing On Circles (And The Philosophy Of Circles), Julie Lynch, Brandyn Woodard, Jessica Harkins
Headwaters
One key concern of Mellon faculty is how to facilitate discussions on difficult topics, such as racism and other forms of oppression. The Circles training in fall semester 2016 was one initiative Mellon funds have sponsored to provide faculty with tools to address this concern. Circle work was already a part of our campuses. Circles of Understanding hosted by International and Intercultural Student Services and courses in mediation and restorative justice taught through Communication and Peace Studies are two examples. The fall training sought to build on this foundation (as well as to respond to faculty interest in circles). Our …
Wrongful Convictions By Police-Induced False Confessions, Kayli Ahuja
Wrongful Convictions By Police-Induced False Confessions, Kayli Ahuja
Celebration of Learning
Wrongful convictions have two main negative effects on society: (1) innocent people are imprisoned, and (2) the real perpetrators are allowed to wander the streets. In order to analyze this issue, this presentation discusses police interrogation tactics (specifically when using the Reid Technique), the association between police interrogation tactics and false confessions, the association between false confessions and wrongful convictions, ways in which wrongful convictions affect communities and their members, and possible ways to mitigate this problem. Although current police interrogation tactics can be useful at eliciting confessions, interrogation methods must be reformed in light of evidence that police-induced false …

To Die Or Not To Die: An Examination Of Gubernatorial Clemency Powers Through A Case Analysis Of Death Penalty Moratoriums, Mary Margaret L. Kirchner
To Die Or Not To Die: An Examination Of Gubernatorial Clemency Powers Through A Case Analysis Of Death Penalty Moratoriums, Mary Margaret L. Kirchner
University Honors Theses
Capital punishment is a controversial sentence reserved for the worst of the worst crimes. State citizens and legislatures have addressed the use of the death penalty in different ways. To mitigate capital punishment, governors have been granted the power to issue clemency for inmates in the criminal justice system. This clemency power is an essential component of the executive’s ability to ensure checks and balances between the three branches of government. This report investigates the overlapping relationship between a governor’s ability to affect the death penalty through acts of clemency. Four Governors in the United States have issued death penalty …
A Queer And Trans-Inclusive Response To Intimate Partner Violence, Leighann Shields
A Queer And Trans-Inclusive Response To Intimate Partner Violence, Leighann Shields
University Honors Theses
While intimate partner violence (IPV) has become widely recognized as a prevalent social issue within recent decades, IPV continues to be conceptualized as an epidemic of male violence against women. This heteronormative understanding of intimate partner violence subsequently excludes queer and trans survivors of IPV, discursively, socially, and institutionally. However, the scarce literature that exists on this topic indicates that rates of queer and trans IPV are equal to, or greater than, rates of heteronormative IPV, and that access to advocacy resources is limited for this population. This study sought to identify the unique barriers LGBTQ survivors face, and to …
The Incorporation Of Fathering Interventions Into Batterer Intervention Programs, Caitlyn Martin
The Incorporation Of Fathering Interventions Into Batterer Intervention Programs, Caitlyn Martin
University Honors Theses
This paper seeks to answer the question: How are fathering interventions incorporated in batterer intervention programs. A content analysis was conducted on two father focused batterer intervention programs called Caring Dads: Helping Fathers Value their Children and Addressing Fatherhood with Men Who Batter: A Curriculum for Working with Abusive Men as Fathers in a Batterers Intervention Program. These programs were examined and coded for the teaching strategies, teaching topics, visuals, objectives, and structures that each program used. Four common themes (Curriculum Focus, Program Fidelity, Teaching Strategies, Teaching Topics) were found in both programs and compared and contrasted. Exploring these themes …
Law Enforcement Trauma Informed Response Training In Adult Sexual Assault Cases, Chelsie Lawter, Julie Valentine
Law Enforcement Trauma Informed Response Training In Adult Sexual Assault Cases, Chelsie Lawter, Julie Valentine
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sexual assault (SA) is one of the most common crimes in the state, affecting one in three Utah women (Mitchell & Peterson, 2008). Despite this, shockingly low numbers of Utah SA victims see their cases progress to prosecution; for example, in Salt Lake County from 2003-2011, only 6% of SA cases were successfully prosecuted (Valentine, Shaw, Lark & Campbell, 2016). These numbers reflect an urgent need in Utah to identify barriers to prosecution and take steps to eliminate those barriers. Police officers, as first responders when victims seek to report an incidence of SA, have an important role in determining …

Sayedzada V. State, 134 Nev. Adv. Op. 38 (May 24, 2018), Sara Schreiber
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Court held that a party waives the right challenge a juror’s presence on appeal when the argument is based on facts known during voir dire; the party consciously made the decision to not pursue, or abandoned, a challenge for cause; and the party accepted the juror’s presence on the jury. The Court then examined the issue of juror bias, and explained the differences between actual, implied, and inferable bias.

Social New Orleans: Identity, Capital, Space, Jonathon G. Brearley
Social New Orleans: Identity, Capital, Space, Jonathon G. Brearley
University Honors Theses
Fundamentally, space is a social product. Social practices both create and are supported by built environment. Urbanity is so much more than a dense array of buildings; it is the street, the sidewalks, the allies, the parks, the people––from the houseless to the penthoused. A city is best understood through the mechanisms that produce the social capital, identity, and space of those people who occupy it. The city of New Orleans is no exception. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina displaced hundreds of thousands of residents, deeply impacting the social economy of the city. This research explicates three unique social practices in …
Investigating Attitude Change Through Psychoeducational Interventions, Elizabeth Claire Toal
Investigating Attitude Change Through Psychoeducational Interventions, Elizabeth Claire Toal
Student Theses
Public perception of individuals charged with sexual offenses tends to be both negative and misinformed, leading to popular support for non-evidence based harsh and punitive sentencing. These fear-based attitudes are often more impactful than research in influencing public policy or legislation regarding individuals charged with sexual offenses. Kleban and Jeglic (2012) observed that discussion-based psychoeducation about individuals charged with sexual offenses resulted in significantly fewer negative attitudes about this offending population. The current study replicated these results with the addition of a Public Service Announcement (PSA) intervention featuring an interactive psychoeducational video addressing myths and misperceptions about individuals charged with …
Method Theory: Finding A Connection And Making Meaning In Literature, Andrew Blom
Method Theory: Finding A Connection And Making Meaning In Literature, Andrew Blom
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
I believe in literature. I believe it is something more than just text, plot, and fictional characters. I believe literature and our lives are completely entwined and that we must use our lives and who we are to figure out literature, or we must use literature to understand our lives and who we are. My intentions for this paper was to establish a set of ideas that readers can use to make a connection to a text when a connection is not easily identified and from there, find meaning that could potentially change their life.
This paper chronicles my development …

Gun Violence Is Not An “Inner City” Problem, Jeffrey A. Butts
Publications and Research
Policy debates about gun violence often focus on cities. This data bit showed how 33 states in the U.S. compare regarding gun violence rates, demonstrated how gun violence rates are not an issue exclusive to cities, and tested whether states conform to the conventional narrative of "urban gun violence."
