E-Mail Instructions To Decrease Same Day Surgery Cancellations, Suji Ann John
E-Mail Instructions To Decrease Same Day Surgery Cancellations, Suji Ann John
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Same day cancellations on the day of the procedure are associated with poor quality of care, lower patient satisfaction, and higher healthcare costs. Cancellations are often the result of NPO (nil per os or nothing by mouth) violations, missed preoperative instructions, and patient illness. This quality improvement project explored email preoperative instructions as a means to decrease surgical cancellations on the day of the procedure. Methods Design and Setting This quality improvement project was implemented in a large pediatric facility using convenience sampling to evaluate the effectiveness of emailed preoperative instructions along with preoperative phone calls to decrease same day …

A Place Of Passage: Graphic Design And The Transformation Of Space Into Experience, Misty Thomas-Trout
‘A Place of Passage’: Supplemental materials
This book explains the story behind the artwork in the first-floor central corridor of St. Mary's Hall.
Students and faculty in a Department of Art and Design practicum course — called Ligature Studio — worked for almost two years on the project, which was completed in January 2019. The holistic design concept aimed to honor the physical and spiritual passage of individuals through time through one of UD’s oldest facilities.
Communicating The Health Impacts Of Climate Change: From Conviction To Persuasion, Emma Lozon
Communicating The Health Impacts Of Climate Change: From Conviction To Persuasion, Emma Lozon
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Drawing on rhetorical theory as well as research in health and environmental communication, this thesis analyzes the effectiveness of messages that link climate change with health implications at moving audiences to persuasion. The two texts analyzed are a report produced by a group of physicians advocating for action on climate change and an episode from the Years of Living Dangerously Series. The findings indicate that communicators have the opportunity to frame climate-change-health messages in rhetorically sensitive ways that are more likely to empower audiences. Progressing from problems to solutions and to benefits of taking action can frame distressing health messages …
Can Threshold-Based Sensor Alerts Be Analysed To Detect Faults In A District Heating Network?, Liam Cantwell
Can Threshold-Based Sensor Alerts Be Analysed To Detect Faults In A District Heating Network?, Liam Cantwell
Dissertations
Older IoT “smart sensors” create system alerts from threshold rules on reading values. These simple thresholds are not very flexible to changes in the network. Due to the large number of false positives generated, these alerts are often ignored by network operators. Current state-of-the-art analytical models typically create alerts using raw sensor readings as the primary input. However, as greater numbers of sensors are being deployed, the growth in the number of readings that must be processed becomes problematic. The number of analytic models deployed to each of these systems is also increasing as analysis is broadened. This study aims …

Depicting The Consequences Of Storm Surge Risk Communication Opportunities And Ethics, Peter Stempel
Depicting The Consequences Of Storm Surge Risk Communication Opportunities And Ethics, Peter Stempel
Open Access Dissertations
To better communicate the risks of storm surge, scientists and engineers are employing novel 3d visualizations. In many cases, these visualizations are deliberately used in, or leak into mass media contexts that are not addressed by current frameworks for hazard communication. These frameworks discourage the use of 3d visualizations due to a long-standing gap in basic research as to how graphics and visualizations alter perceptions of risk.
A survey (n=735) was employed to assess how 3d visualizations of storm surge depicted in recognizable contexts were perceived and altered perceptions of risk. Results of the survey demonstrate that place recognition and …
The User Experience Redesign Of A Product Instruction Manual Using The Poka Yoke Principle, Ephraim A. Pittore
The User Experience Redesign Of A Product Instruction Manual Using The Poka Yoke Principle, Ephraim A. Pittore
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this research is to address the issues associated with user experience in consumer products, particularly in the introduction phase of consumer product acceptance. Instructional manuals serve the role of educating new users on how to assemble or operate a new product, aiming to bridge the gap between the intended use idealized by the designer and the actual use that a consumer would intuitively perform. Historically however, instruction manuals have been known to be confusing and not usful.;The design of a toy spider instruction manual was analyzed using sequential explanatory method to determine the effectiveness of the instruction …
The Interaction Of Ignition And In-Cylinder Flow On Flame Kernel Development And Its Impacts On Combustion In An Optically Accessible Direct Injection Engine, Yanyu Wang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A significant challenge facing spark-ignited (SI) engines to achieve higher efficiency via highly diluted combustion is the quickly increased combustion instability as the dilution level increases. The flow motion variation has been identified as a dominant factor that introduces combustion variability at highly diluted conditions. However, the detailed mechanism of how the variation in flow motion impacts the flame kernel development and introduces combustion instability is only partially understood. This research investigated the impacts of the in-cylinder flow on variability of the ignition and early flame kernel development in a single cylinder direct-injection spark-ignition (DI-SI) optically accessible engine and accessory …
Visual Literacy For The Legal Profession, Richard K. Sherwin
Visual Literacy For The Legal Profession, Richard K. Sherwin
Articles & Chapters
Digital technology has transformed the way we communicate in society. Swept along on a digital tide, words, sounds, and images easily, and often, flow together. This state of affairs has radically affected not only our commercial and political practices in society, but also the way we practice law.
Unfortunately, legal education and legal theory have not kept up. Inconsistencies and unpredictability in the way courts ascertain the admissibility of various kinds of visual evidence and visual argumentation, lapses in the cross examination of visual evidence at trial, and inadequately theorized notions of visual meaning and the epistemology of affect tell …
