Examining The Professional Codes Of Design Organisations, Peter Buwert Jun 2018

Examining The Professional Codes Of Design Organisations, Peter Buwert

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Many of the professional organisations within the various fields of design activity publish professional codes of ethics in one form or another. This paper opens up a discussion of the role which professional codes might play in relation to the ethicality of design activity. A framework for understanding the roles and functions which professional codes may play is constructed using concepts drawn from the literature on professional codes. The content of fourteen professional codes issued by design organisations is presented and examined. There does appear to be a broad consensus across the content of the codes examined. However, the matter …

Formgiving To Feminist Futures As Design Activism, Maryam Heidaripour, Laura Forlano Jun 2018

Formgiving To Feminist Futures As Design Activism, Maryam Heidaripour, Laura Forlano

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design activism is the enforcement of positive socio-political change by intervening in daily lives. In this paper, we argue that ‘formgiving’ to futures--design interventions such as physical objects, embodied experiences, and affective engagements--is an activist practice with the unique qualities of engaging participants and facilitating the co-creation of alternatives. Central to our exploration is the question of how to participate in the work of generating new ways of conceptualizing, materializing, and experiencing alternative futures. Drawing on feminist theory and, in particular, its profound commitment to social justice, we discuss three core dimensions that are relevant to the practice of ‘formgiving’ …

A Co-Experience Toolkit: Investigating The Issues Of The Pavement Environment And The Relationship With Elderly Pedestrians, Lulu Yin, Eujin Pei Jun 2018

A Co-Experience Toolkit: Investigating The Issues Of The Pavement Environment And The Relationship With Elderly Pedestrians, Lulu Yin, Eujin Pei

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Pedestrian pavements play an important role in assisting or restricting the quality of walking. Poorly designed and maintained pavements may pose a challenge to the walking experience of older adults. This research aims to investigate pavement problems and their effects on elderly pedestrians. An empirical study was conducted in London with 41 older people aged over 60 who were fit to walk. In this study, we classified 16 influencing factors of the pavements and four adverse effects of them and identified 13 behaviours that elderly pedestrians displayed when they encountered the pavement factors. In addition, 17 recommendations were proposed in …

User Empowerment By Design: A New Domestic Electricity Consumption Model. A Case Study Of Young Urban Tenants, Sagit Dominitz, Elad Persov Jun 2018

User Empowerment By Design: A New Domestic Electricity Consumption Model. A Case Study Of Young Urban Tenants, Sagit Dominitz, Elad Persov

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The energy sector paradigm with the power station on the one end, and the passive consumer on the other end, is becoming obsolete. This paper offers a rethink of domestic electricity consumption: from the worldview where the electricity provider is the sole manager of the process via its interfaces, and acting out of self-interest, to a broad view of sustainable development. The domestic electricity consumption management system presented in this paper deals with the Democratisation of managing electricity consumption, and dismantling an information monopoly by transferring knowledge and responsibility to the users, thus increasing the possibility for sustainable consumption. Design …

The Future Of Heuristic Fossils, Simon T. Downs, Claire A. Lerpiniere Jun 2018

The Future Of Heuristic Fossils, Simon T. Downs, Claire A. Lerpiniere

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The authors propose that while many fields of design are involved in reflexive interactions with design research tools, others are strongly heuristic in both their application of historic knowledge bases and in the ways in which they allow themselves to move forward, to construct new knowledge as an extension of craft thinking with user-centred evidence. These historical frames become a limiting factor in both the ways that practice can develop but also, more worryingly, in the ways in which these fields can develop their own research tools.

We go on to report on three workshops, including one in which we invited technologists and designers to work together to talk through and materially represent their tacit understandings of how two Blockchain applications – BITNATION and Trust Stamp – work. We demonstrate how creative methods are useful in enabling …

Tacit Synthesis: Typography As Research, Jilian Coorey, Aoife Mooney Jun 2018

Tacit Synthesis: Typography As Research, Jilian Coorey, Aoife Mooney

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The designer of today is solving complex problems. Among other skills, the literacy of other disciplines, the ability to be nimble in practice, engage in participatory design, and the capacity to interpret and synthesize research is imperative. For this study, we were intent on fostering a research-driven classroom, specifically in relation to typography. To expand student horizons, we’ve implemented the International Society of Typographic Designers briefs, providing a platform of research, innovation and conceptual thinking. Students typographically interpret a text, curating and authoring content. In implementing an inquiry-based learning methodology, research dictates form, rather than relying on typographic trends. Limiting …

Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen Jun 2018

Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designers draw implicitly on rhetorical modes of appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) in the way they talk about their work in terms of its strategic, social, and cultural impact. Rhetorical practice on its own, however, may not align with an ethical position. Yet design’s increasing emphasis on values, behaviours, and social action indicates a practice that requires expertise in formulating compelling design propositions that inspire people to act. This has significance for design education in relation to developing learners’ capabilities in making more compelling arguments for their design work that emphasise the social and ethical impact of design in use. This …

Pedagogic Power-Tools: Knowing What Was And What Is, For What Will Be, Glen O'Sullivan Jun 2018

Pedagogic Power-Tools: Knowing What Was And What Is, For What Will Be, Glen O'Sullivan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The tools we choose to derive benefit from and our perception of their significance play a determining role in how successful the designs we create will be. When we think of a tool, the first thing that comes to mind is more than likely a device you hold in your hand. However, the designs we create are not only made with tools of a physical nature but are also birthed from tools of an abstract variety. Therefore not all tools are prosthetic. Some design tools are related to or exist in the form of words. These are verbal tools. In …

In this paper, we study what companies request from applicants for graphic design positions in Brazil. Based on a document analysis of 371 job advertisements, we uncover 35 different types of requests which we structure in terms of (1) Design deliverables, (2) Knowledge and skills and (3) Personal traits. In addition, we explore how the content of job advertisements potentially can inform educational developments by reporting on a group interview with design educators. In the interview we explore the degree to which different requests in the advertisements are covered in a regulatory educational design policy document for higher education in …

Using Dynamic Capabilities In An Actionable Tool As A Vehicle To Initiate Design-Driven Innovation, Barenda Klitsie, Rebecca Price, Christine De Lille Jun 2018

Using Dynamic Capabilities In An Actionable Tool As A Vehicle To Initiate Design-Driven Innovation, Barenda Klitsie, Rebecca Price, Christine De Lille

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In order to become more innovative, corporations are increasingly turning to design- driven innovation capabilities. These capabilities are dynamic: they influence the way companies run their business and how companies create, capture and deliver value. Building design capabilities has proven difficult, given the tacit nature of design practice and the conflicting reasoning style of abduction that allows for the creative leap. However, if these enterprises don’t improve, they are in danger of losing their ability to add value to the market. This may result in loss of market-share, which may lead to job destruction and the loss of valuable knowledge …

How Consumers Read The Visual Presentation Of Food Packaging Design In A Cross-Cultural Context: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, Linna Hu, Hua Dong Jun 2018

How Consumers Read The Visual Presentation Of Food Packaging Design In A Cross-Cultural Context: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, Linna Hu, Hua Dong

DRS Biennial Conference Series

How consumers understand products is based largely on their communication with the products, which is significantly influenced not only by the consumers’ cultural background but also by the cultural context where the communication happens. This paper viewed consumers as readers who play active roles in the dynamic structure of communication and discussed how cultural factors affect consumers in reading design. Companies are now striving to create visually desirable products that can be universally recognized in the increasingly global marketplace. ‘Lao Gan Ma’, the most popular chilli sauce brand in China, was introduced as a case study in this paper. In …

Surfing For Inspiration: Digital Inspirational Material In Design Practice, Janin Koch, Magda László, Andrés Lucero, Antti Oulasvirta

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the last decade, many new opportunities have emerged to support creativity and problem-solving in design by finding inspirational materials via the Internet. Online design communities such as those of Behance and Pinterest showcase portfolios and user-made artwork, and they offer support for designers’ day-to-day work to find and collect inspirational material. However, very little is known about how these communities affect inspiration-related practices of professional designers and how designers view them. This paper presents new data on the practices designers employ when seeking digital inspiration sources online and reflecting on, tracking, and managing them in today’s Web design. Current …

Desert Drawing: From Pigment To (Apple) Pencil, Nicola St John Jun 2018

Desert Drawing: From Pigment To (Apple) Pencil, Nicola St John

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The ability to digitally draw is ingrained within contemporary visual design practices. Drawing is a way of recording, representing and communicating that reveals the identity and voice of the creator as they design for a communication purpose. This paper presents a case of how a group of young Indigenous students re-interpret traditional culture through the act of drawing, as they move from analogue to digital technologies. Through a series of design workshops, the drawing styles of participants from remote Central Australia were recorded and analyzed. Workshops were based within Youth Participatory Action Research methodologies and embedded within Indigenous pedagogies. Results …

Name That Place: Reconsidering Diversity And Globalization Through The Architecture Of Ethnic Enclaves, Tim Michaels Jun 2018

Name That Place: Reconsidering Diversity And Globalization Through The Architecture Of Ethnic Enclaves, Tim Michaels

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

Introducing students to a conversation about the disbursement of cultures through globalization is often difficult to approach. In this single-class activity, globalization is introduced through a virtual game which is focused on ethnic enclaves, the small immigrant neighborhoods that retain much of the immigrants’ original culture despite existing within a dominant one. Students will reconsider their intercultural communication, diversity awareness, and understanding about the effects of globalization and cultural assimilation by assessing stereotypes that emerge from the architecture of ethnic enclaves. By challenging students to identify the location of several ethnic enclaves through pictures, without the broader geographic context, a …

The Future Of Visual Communication Design Is Almost Invisible Or Why Skills In Visual Aesthetics Are Important To Service Design, Mark Roxburgh, Jemimah Irvin

ServDes Conference Series

Over the past 20 years there has been an increase in post-secondary visual communication education in Australia while the growth of the industry itself has been low, meaning an increasing number of graduates compete for a limited pool of jobs . The use of visualisation in human centered and service design approaches provides alternative employment opportunities for these graduates. This paper presents a case study of a visual communication honors research project that is indicative of those opportunities and the potential benefits of having highly skilled visual practitioners involved in human centered and service design processes. Furthermore, we argue that …

Space And Service Design Into Educational Practice, Nansi Van Van Geetsom Jun 2018

Space And Service Design Into Educational Practice, Nansi Van Van Geetsom

ServDes Conference Series

Contemporary global challenges such as social inequalities, ageing, food crises, nature disasters have encouraged designers worldwide to scrutinise their new role in these matters and to respond with design solutions. Through purposeful sampling, this paper describes how an interior design course has shifted from a more traditional spatial emphasis in the design projects to an approach focalizing on social-cultural challenges and therefore equally addressing the intangible context of design projects. In the new pedagogical strategy the design of spaces goes hand-in-hand with the design of public services and customer experiences. The educational approach leads to new design skills, knowledge and …

From User-Centred To Stakeholder Oriented Service Design: Implications For The Role Of Service Designers And Their Education Based On An Example From The Public Sector, Lorenz Herfurth

ServDes Conference Series

This working paper reflects on an inquiry into a current service design practice, by sharing insights into the changing role of service designers and by outlining implications for service design education. It is based on ethnographic research with a public-sector service design agency. Observations suggest that service designers become increasingly concerned with and integrated into the organizational context that they try to change. This paper then firstly gives a real-world example of the deep integration of service designers in a client organization, a council, it continues by describing the interactions and relationships that service designers have with this organization and …

Learning And Practicing In Service Design, Alessandro Deserti, Anna Meroni, Bas Raijmakers Jun 2018

Learning And Practicing In Service Design, Alessandro Deserti, Anna Meroni, Bas Raijmakers

ServDes Conference Series

The paper analyses the contributions to the “learning and practicing’ track of “ServDes.2018 Proof of Concept” and categorises them by identifying convergences and defining six emerging topics. As a result, new roles and responsibilities emerge. They can be summarised in a few directions: 1) beyond learning - where more and more, service designers are explicitly or implicitly requested to play the role of educators within organisations; 2) beyond human centred design – where the need to better understand the role of and the interaction with ‘non-human agents’ emerges; 3) beyond organisational change – where the transformational role of design seems …
