Celebrating Slow Movement: Design Of A Sensory Experience Through An Intergenerational Platform, Asal Andarzipour Jun 2018

Celebrating Slow Movement: Design Of A Sensory Experience Through An Intergenerational Platform, Asal Andarzipour

Theses - ALL

This thesis explores the intersections between wisdom, happiness, and aesthetics through intergenerational experiences of older adults and younger individuals. Parallel to this, I have researched the virtues of Slow Cooking, Slow Design, and the Slow Movement to address wellness needs throughout our world. The original solutions explored for balancing these values focused on mindful activities. Case studies of relationships within families in comparison with alternative communities, such as Eco-villages, have guided my research and revealed meaningful efforts that engage individuals with shared environmental and moral values. The final idea that I envisioned is, in essence, a form of sensory experience …

Hybrid Service Simulation Model For Circular Economy Implementation, Edna Guevara-Rivera, Roberto Osorno-Hinojosa, Victor Hugo Zaldívar-Carrillo

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Circular economy (CE) aims to redefine products and services to design waste out by using renewable energy sources. In Europe and the United States, many industries have implemented circular economy in one or more of its product cycles. However, in the literature, there are no reported cases from Mexico. In this article, we review service-dominant (S-D) logic and ecosystem services (ES) to define the value cocreation between the elements in a CE cycle. On the other hand, we propose to model each one of those elements, their interactions and behaviors using Agent-based Modelling (ABM) and System Dynamics (SD) aiming at …

Transition Design: Teaching And Learning, Stacie Rohrbach, Molly Steenson Jun 2018

Transition Design: Teaching And Learning, Stacie Rohrbach, Molly Steenson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Central to the development of transition design is its foundation in higher education. The theoretical basis that informs the practice of transition design develops from an emergent process comprised of hypotheses, theory, and testing in educational settings. These approaches—which focus on tackling specific, complex, placed-based challenges—must be tailored to address the nature of specific contexts and the varied learning of student cohorts and their respective needs. This paper investigates the value and thoughtful integration of transition design practices into design education and proposes curricula for undergraduate design students. It outlines methods and tools that are utilized in our teaching, describes …

Design Justice: Towards An Intersectional Feminist Framework For Design Theory And Practice, Sasha Costanza-Chock Jun 2018

Design Justice: Towards An Intersectional Feminist Framework For Design Theory And Practice, Sasha Costanza-Chock

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design is key to our collective liberation, but most design processes today reproduce inequalities structured by what Black feminist scholars call the matrix of domination. Intersecting inequalities are manifest at all levels of the design process. This paper builds upon the Design Justice Principles, developed by an emerging network of designers and community organizers, to propose a working definition of design justice: Design justice is a field of theory and practice that is concerned with how the design of objects and systems influences the distribution of risks, harms, and benefits among various groups of people. Design justice focuses on the …

Virtually There: Distant Freshmen Blended In Classes Through Synchronous Online Education, Phillip A. Olt Ed.D. Jun 2018

Virtually There: Distant Freshmen Blended In Classes Through Synchronous Online Education, Phillip A. Olt Ed.D.

Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications

Synchronous online education occurs when the students and faculty member are in different locations geographically and interaction occurs simultaneously through the internet at scheduled times. In this study I investigated the phenomenon of using synchronous online classes blended with a face-to-face classroom to complete the freshman year of college. The essence of the experience emerged around the concept of ambiguity, specifically in regard to group membership, functionality of technology, and place. This understanding of ambiguity provides a framework upon which to design practices for engaging such distance students and best promoting their learning.

Implicit Regional Economic Goals And Objectives: A Study Of U.S. Development Programs, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Eric Bowen Jun 2018

Implicit Regional Economic Goals And Objectives: A Study Of U.S. Development Programs, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Eric Bowen

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

At the present time, U.S. regional economic development policies tend to be focused on sectors, infrastructure, human capital, innovation capability, or to be problem oriented, and only a few programs can be described as being place-based. In this paper, we are looking at major federal regional development programs to deduce their combined implicit place-based goals and objectives. Because the U.S. seems to be relatively unique among OECD countries in its scant use of place-based policies, we compare the United States to, in particular, Canada to gain further insights into the reasons for and potential effects of such policy differences.

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mineral products provide essential fuels and raw materials for industrialization and our daily life, but their influences on other aspects of life need to be taken into consideration. While the whole world benefits from mining's contributions, most of the resulting detrimental impacts on the environment and society fall on the local communities. The participation of the local community is one solution to decrease the risks from community-related problems. Subsequently, the requirements of mining sustainable development can be met. A literature review was conducted on mining sustainability and stakeholder participation, and the shortcomings of existing research and difficulties of further study …

(Re)Discovering A Midrashic Biblical Imagination For The Progressive-Liberal Community, Elisabeth R. Jones May 2018

(Re)Discovering A Midrashic Biblical Imagination For The Progressive-Liberal Community, Elisabeth R. Jones

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This thesis presents the case for the development of a sustainable community practice of midrashic biblical imagination as a catalyst for transformative engagement with the Bible in progressive Christian congregations. Notes that a midrashic imagination applied to the polyvalent testimonies of the biblical canon is an apt partner for post- modern, progressive congregations, whose theology embraces diversity, plurality, and critique of hegemonic structures. Uses a longitudinal qualitative methodology, with Appreciative Inquiry, to trace the various methods used for cultivating curiosity among Scriptural skeptics over nine years, concluding with the Midrashic Imagination Project, which involves the community in study, worship, preaching …

Communication ETDs

Kenya is faced with a myriad of intercultural conflicts that impact youth. This study shifts attention to eleven diverse Kenyan youth leaders, to understand how they experience and respond to conflict. To collect data, I facilitated a conflict transformation and peacebuilding workshop in Meru, Kenya. I analyzed participants' written reflections and workshop discussions using a critical textual analysis. Participants identified contextual structures, such as tribalism, politics, economics, and patriarchy as enabling and constraining conflict. I also found that accounting for intersectional subject positions is important during intercultural conflict because how participants are positioned influences their capacity to respond to conflict …
