Innovation Diffusion In The Legal Industry, William D. Henderson Jan 2018

Innovation Diffusion In The Legal Industry, William D. Henderson

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

This article is adapted from a series of blog posts originally found in my recently-started blog entitled Legal Evolution. The foundational material set forth in this article (and in those blog posts) applies to the legal services market insights gained from disciplines other than law. This article begins by setting forth the well-established theory of an “innovation diffusion curve” and the research that has identified the factors that affect the rate of adoption of innovations. This article identifies why innovation in the legal services market is desirable and applies to the legal services field insights drawn from this research …

Marital Satisfaction Of Turkish Individuals: The Role Of Marriage Type, Duration Of Marriage, And Personality Traits, Gökçe Bulgan, Gülşah Kemer, Evrim Çetinkaya Yıldız

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of marriage type (family-arranged versus self-choice), duration of marriage, and personality traits (i.e., agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, openness, and neuroticism) in predicting married Turkish individuals’ marital satisfaction levels. Participants were 288 (147 female and 141 male) married Turkish individuals living in urban cities in Turkey. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed significant results for the linear combination of marriage type and duration of marriage as well as personality traits in explaining individuals’ marital satisfaction levels. More specifically, duration of marriage, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism were found to have individual significant contributions to …

An Integrated Dual-Pathway Model Of Multicultural Experience And Creativity, Lay See Ong, Yi Wen Tan, Chi-Ying Cheng Jan 2018

An Integrated Dual-Pathway Model Of Multicultural Experience And Creativity, Lay See Ong, Yi Wen Tan, Chi-Ying Cheng

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this chapter, we present the dual-pathway multicultural experience and creative knowledge (MEACK) model, depicting how multicultural experience influences creative performance through the building of two types of knowledge: content knowledge (the what of creativity) and normative knowledge (the how and why of creativity). The MEACK model also takes into account the role of multicultural identity integration (MII), an individual difference in the levels of integration among multiple cultural identities, by showing that MII moderates the two pathways. We posit that high MIIs, who see their identities as more compatible than low MIIs, are better able to experience creative conceptual …

Confronting Heteronormative Standards Of The Nuclear Family: A Narrative Analysis Of Transgender Dads Pregnancy And Birth Experiences, Annie Rosenblum Jan 2018

Confronting Heteronormative Standards Of The Nuclear Family: A Narrative Analysis Of Transgender Dads Pregnancy And Birth Experiences, Annie Rosenblum

Theses & ETDs

In our society, we most commonly associate pregnancy and birth with the bodies and experiences of cisgender, straight women. This thesis seeks to center the underrepresented pregnancy and birth stories of transgender dads through a narrative analysis of their experiences, as told by them in media. Their stories are sourced from three pieces of media created by and for transgender parents (and those wanting to learn more about them): Labor of Love (2008), a memoir, The Accidental Gay Parents (2015-2017), a podcast, and Transgender Parents (2014), a documentary. I will broadly explore how gender determines reproductive choices, and more specifically …

African American And First-Generation Students’ Perceptions Of And Experiences With An Academic Cohort, Sovent Zantrell Taylor Jan 2018

African American And First-Generation Students’ Perceptions Of And Experiences With An Academic Cohort, Sovent Zantrell Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Underrepresented student populations are faced with numerous barriers and are often overlooked on many college campuses. The aim of this research was to better understand academic cohorts and if they help reduce some of the barriers faced by African American and first-generation students which can ultimately affect retention and persistence to graduation. In order to gather this information, interviews and surveys were conducted with students once enrolled in the foundations for academic success track (Fastrack) program at the University of Mississippi. Results from the interviews and surveys indicate that while the Fastrack program seemed to support successful social transitions for …

The Paradox Of Repression And Nonviolent Movements, L. R. Kurtz, Lee A. Smithey Jan 2018

The Paradox Of Repression And Nonviolent Movements, L. R. Kurtz, Lee A. Smithey

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works

Political repression often paradoxically fuels popular movements rather than undermining resistance. When authorities respond to strategic nonviolent action with intimidation, coercion, and violence, they often undercut their own legitimacy, precipitating significant reforms or even governmental overthrow. Brutal repression of a movement is often a turning point in its history: Bloody Sunday in the March to Selma led to the passage of civil rights legislation by the US Congress, and the Amritsar Massacre in India showed the world the injustice of the British Empire’s use of force in maintaining control over its colonies. Activists in a wide range of movements have …

Cairo Debates: Understanding Arab-American Relations, Magda Shahin Jan 2018

Cairo Debates: Understanding Arab-American Relations, Magda Shahin

Faculty Journal Articles

Since the 1940s, the relationship with the Arab World has been an integral aspect of U.S. foreign policy, and has played an important role in shaping the interactions between Arab states and the rest of the world. A strong relationship with Egypt has underpinned Washington’s policies, particularly after the 1967 Camp David Accords, and Cairo continues to be an important partner and U.S. ally. As Dr. Mark Miller, the Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware, explained in his lecture, the major tenants of U.S. foreign policy towards the region, namely its …

A Comparison Of Online, Video Synchronous, And Traditional Learning Modes For An Introductory Undergraduate Physics Course, Emily K. Faulconer, John C. Griffith, Beverly Wood, Donna Roberts

Publications

While the equivalence between online and traditional classrooms has been well-researched, very little of this includes college-level introductory Physics. Only one study explored Physics at the whole-class level rather than specific course components such as a single lab or a homework platform. In this work, we compared the failure rate, grade distribution, and withdrawal rates in an introductory undergraduate Physics course across several learning modes including traditional face-to-face instruction, synchronous video instruction, and online classes. Statistically significant differences were found for student failure rates, grade distribution, and withdrawal rates but yielded small effect sizes. Post-hoc pair-wise test was run to determine …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held …

Martha Fineman, More Transformative Than Ever, Michéle Alexandre Jan 2018

Martha Fineman, More Transformative Than Ever, Michéle Alexandre

Emory Law Journal

The breadth and depth of Fineman¿s work are such that it would be impossible to discuss all the layers of her ongoing legacy in this short Essay. For the sake of brevity, I confine my discussion to three points. Specifically, the foundations laid by Martha¿s work reverberate culturally and globally in three ways: (1) valuation of invisible labor, (2) normalization of uncomfortable conversations, and (3) universalization and destigmatization of vulnerability. While I focus solely on these key contributions, I could go on forever about the breath and scope of Fineman¿s influence and the impact of her mentorship. To trace Martha¿s …

The Benefit Of The Diversification Of The Church Growth Movement And A Way Forward, Russell Bryan Jan 2018

The Benefit Of The Diversification Of The Church Growth Movement And A Way Forward, Russell Bryan

Great Commission Research Journal

Although the diversification of the Church Growth Movement has created an environment in which people balk at its definitions and its principles, many fail to realize the benefit of the diversification. The diversification of the Church Growth Movement allows theologians and missiologists to evaluate the impact church growth thought has had on both the culture within the church and the church’s ability to reach its surrounding culture. As a result, theologians and missiologists not only can assess and address the current state of churches, but they also can offer a biblical way forward. In doing so, churches can realign with …

For this study, Chief Learning Officer is defined as the top leadership role held in a corporate organization that oversees the functions of learning and development, talent development, and/or training. This study summarizes data collected through semi-structured interviews with ten CLOs from a variety of countries, industries, and company sizes. Overall, four key themes emerged from the study: 1) a perceived trajectory of the CLO role, 2) opinions about …

A Quantitative Study Measuring The Relationship Between Mindset And Psychological Well-Being Among High Achieving College-Bound Students Attending Private Christian High Schools In Orange County, California, Leslie A. Radmacher-Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The culture of American education is largely predicated on acquiring the proverbial golden ticket for entrance to an esteemed college has produced the most anxious, stressed, and sleep-deprived generation ever (Jones & Jones, 2006). As students strive to graduate from high school with perfected profiles that impress and garner admission to these colleges, high school success and educational practices are typically focused on achievement as reflected by test scores, grades, college acceptance results, and scholarship offers (Zins, Bloodworth, Weissberg, & Walberg, 2004). As a result, instead of prioritizing process-oriented learning that is associated with a growth mindset, achievement performance measures …

Serving Others At The Expense Of Self: The Relationship Between Nonprofit Ceo Compensation And Performance In Trade And Professional Associations, Marina Saitgalina, Andrew A. Bennett, Christopher S. Reina, Joseph E. Coombs Jan 2018

Serving Others At The Expense Of Self: The Relationship Between Nonprofit Ceo Compensation And Performance In Trade And Professional Associations, Marina Saitgalina, Andrew A. Bennett, Christopher S. Reina, Joseph E. Coombs

School of Public Service Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the organizational importance of relative CEO compensation in trade associations and professional societies. It is known that there is variation in how much pay is tied to performance in different subcategories of nonprofit organizations. However, instead of looking at how performance affects pay, we investigate how CEO compensation affects organization performance when CEOs are aware of their peer compensation and are able to influence their own. We hypothesized that CEOs who knowingly earn less will be associated with both greater financial and nonfinancial organizational performance. This altruistic perspective draws on theories from leadership and psychology rather than …

Demons, Spirits, And Elephants: Reflections On The Failure Of Public Administration Theory, Melvin Dubnick Jan 2018

Demons, Spirits, And Elephants: Reflections On The Failure Of Public Administration Theory, Melvin Dubnick

Faculty Publications

Author's Note: This paper was originally written and presented in 1999 as both a critical reflection on Public Administration's ongoing "identity crisis" and a rather (often too harsh) assessment of several recently published works that seemed exemplary of the problem being highlighted. Although some aspects of the argument made in the paper did find an outlet (see Dubnick, 2000), its length and contentious tone meant it was unlikely to find a mainstream outlet for publication. Nevertheless, it did circulate among colleagues and generated some collegial and published reaction (see Bogason et al., 2000). Eventually relegated to a location at the …
