Race, Identity, And Communication: Experiences Of College Students From Underrepresented Groups, Raya D. Petty
Masters Theses
There is a significant difference of the completion of college between minority students and white students. The achievement gap is influenced by race and socioeconomic status of the students. The purpose of my study was to examine the relationship between academic performance and achievement and sociocultural factors including race and socioeconomic status. My thesis will affirm previous research that recognizes a need for resources specifically dedicated to assist marginalized groups in higher education. It will bring attention to minority students, first-generation college students and students with a low socioeconomic status. The project includes a literature review that explores identity, intersectionality, …
Blurring The Spectrum: Exploring Queer Conservatism, Austin P. Mejdrich
Blurring The Spectrum: Exploring Queer Conservatism, Austin P. Mejdrich
Masters Theses
Running parallel to the groundbreaking and historic advancement of LGBTQ rights over the past decade has been the rise in the prominence and public discourse of queer conservative thinking. From the Log Cabin Republicans to far-right nationalistic politics, queer conservatives underscore both diverging ideologies within the modern American conservative tradition and the increase of far-right politics in Western societies. This study argues that queer conservatism, while traditionally less explored in the broader context of sexuality politics, is consequential to an understanding of the LGBTQ community and queer politics. Thus, an exploration of queer conservatism as a political ideology is explored, …
Paul Piccone’S Providential Moment: Phenomenology, Subjectivity, And 20th Century Marxism In Telos, Jacob A. Ulmschneider
Paul Piccone’S Providential Moment: Phenomenology, Subjectivity, And 20th Century Marxism In Telos, Jacob A. Ulmschneider
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the intellectual history of editor, writer, and philosopher, Paul Piccone and Telos, an independent journal of contemporary critical theory, which he founded in 1968. Born in Italy, Piccone lived most of his life in the United States, earning his Ph.D. in philosophy at SUNY-Buffalo in 1970. Piccone served as Telos’ editor and a major contributor from 1968 to 2004. This thesis follows the trajectory of his thought by contextualizing his writing within the broader world of Marxist, and eventually post-Marxist, political philosophy. Telos also concerned itself with modern interpretations of historical dialectics and early 20th-century …

Understanding The Role Of Sport For Development In Addressing Health Disparities In Low-Ses Communities, Tiesha R. Martin
Understanding The Role Of Sport For Development In Addressing Health Disparities In Low-Ses Communities, Tiesha R. Martin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the role of Sport for Development (SFD) in addressing health disparities in low-SES communities. This was done using a multiple case study design, in which administrators, staff, and youth participants from five SFD programs were interviewed. A theoretical model, consisting of the theory of fundamental causes (Link & Phelan, 1995), the classification of SFD programs (Coalter, 2007), and the ecological model of health promotion (McLeroy, 1988), was developed to guide this study.
Interviews were transcribed and then analyzed using a deductive coding process (Gilgun, 2005). The findings revealed that the SFD programs …

Examining The Variability In General Education Placements For Students With Intellectual Disability, Meghan Cosier, Julia M. White, Qiu Wang
Examining The Variability In General Education Placements For Students With Intellectual Disability, Meghan Cosier, Julia M. White, Qiu Wang
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Despite the overwhelming body of research suggesting that students with intellectual disability benefit from access to general education placements, students with intellectual disability continue to be educated primarily in segregated settings. Furthermore, the percentage of students with intellectual disability included in general education classrooms varies greatly among and within states across the United States. In an effort to explore such variability in New York State, we examined trends in general education placement rates of students with intellectual disability across districts and possible predictors of placement in regular classes. Results suggest that although descriptive patterns of placement exist, a more definitive …

Paulo Freire And Liberation Theology: The Christian Consciousness Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter Mclaren, Petar Jandrić
Paulo Freire And Liberation Theology: The Christian Consciousness Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter Mclaren, Petar Jandrić
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"In this article we expand our work towards intersections and relationships between liberation theology and Paulo Freire. While Freire addressed liberation theology in his writings fairly sporadically (e.g. »The Politics of Education« [1985]), there is no doubt that he »lived a liberating Christian faith« and »significantly contributed to the thinking of liberation theology« (Kyrilo 2011, p. 167). Now that Paulo Freire is no longer with us, arguably the best way to reinvent his works for the present moment is through dialogue with Peter McLaren: Freire’s close friend, »intellectual relative« (Freire 1995, p. x), and one of the key contemporary thinkers …
A Theory Of Constructive Interpretation For Customary International Law Identification, Nadia Banteka
A Theory Of Constructive Interpretation For Customary International Law Identification, Nadia Banteka
Michigan Journal of International Law
Scholars and judicial practice have long debated the nature of customary international law (“CIL”) as a source of international law, including its normative identification. Existing approaches to CIL identification largely follow the methods of induction and deduction. However, these methods are only two ends of a spectrum, and international law has yet to engage systematically with other methodological approaches that lay within this spectrum. This Article introduces a mid-spectrum approach by applying the theory of constructive interpretation to CIL identification. The Article introduces the guiding principles of constructive interpretation, examines the process of constructive interpretation in the abstract, and applies …
Assessing Political Participation On The Internet In Contemporary China, Ping Xu, Yinjiao Ye, Mingxin Zhang
Assessing Political Participation On The Internet In Contemporary China, Ping Xu, Yinjiao Ye, Mingxin Zhang
Political Science Faculty Publications
Drawing on the resource model of political participation, this study examines the ways in which various resources, including money, computer and Internet access, Internet skills, and civic skills predict Chinese citizens’ political participation online. The results showed that income was a significant predictor of online political participation regardless of whether it was by using the Internet to contact governmental officials, monitoring public policies online, or participating in online protests. Civic skills also consistently predicted the three forms of online political participation. Computer and Internet access, as well as Internet skills, were significant predictors of some forms of online political participation, …

Law, Brands, And Innovation: How Trademark Law Helps To Create Fashion Innovation, 17 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 492 (2018), Dayoung Chung
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
This Article explores the role of trademark law in the fashion industry. For years, the fashion industry has drawn legal scholars’ attention for its maintenance of creative endeavors within a legal environment that offers limited protection against design copying. Some influential legal studies argued that copying paradoxically helps the fashion industry as unregulated copying stimulates the creation of new designs. Yet, this Article observes that the driver for new design creation is already built into the contemporary fashion industry. The question should rather be directed at who creates fashion and how the role of the law, if any, aids the …

The Impact Of Cultural Communication On Team Performance, Bret Hunley, Smarajit Chakraborty, Stephen Macdonald
Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects
The trend in today’s corporate workforce continues to move towards becoming more culturally diverse; while beneficial, to maintain competitive edge this element also increases functional challenges between working group members. In order to achieve a high performing team, it is imperative management understands the cultural and lingual differences among the individual members, and develop practices that diminish these challenges. Workforce diversity has been identified as being able to add value to the overall outcome; however, success ultimately depends on the team’s ability to interact culturally, communicate effectively, and understand the mannerisms unique to each team member’s individual culture.

Institutions matter in antitrust, at least as much as ideas. Most antitrust arguments, and especially the contretemps currently enjoying some attention in the popular press, imagine that antitrust problems are short- or medium-term matters, and that they can be corrected with local doctrinal steps. I suggest there is a deeper problem, a phenomenon more deeply inherent in the nature of competition itself. The problem will cyclically recur, so long as institutional brakes are unavailable to keep it at bay. Specifically, it seems that competitive markets are difficult to preserve without some prospective, no-fault rule to control concentration for its own …

Mom To Mom: Online Breastfeeding Advice, Jennifer D. Furkin
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Exploring online support groups has gained more and more popularity in the last decade. Investigating the type of support messages users send each other has broadened the already extensive social support framework built in the last forty years. Mothers utilize online support for various topics, and a very common topic is breastfeeding. The perception of breastfeeding has changed throughout history with shifting beliefs and societal norms coupled with solid facts about its importance in the sustaining of infants. Online breastfeeding support has been previously explored through the categorization of types of support and themes within the interactions. This study extended …

Visualization Of Large Diverse Collections Of Scholarly Output, Bharat K. Kale
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Visualizing large real-world networks, such as social networks and scientific collaboration networks, is challenging not only because they contain large numbers of nodes and links but also due to their multivariate nature. Applications that analyze such datasets tend to focus on problems related to visualizing either multiple attributes on nodes or the topology of the network. Very few applications focus on both. This research explores a new approach to visualize such multivariate networks, using a glyph designed based on sunburst chart to encode attributes on the nodes and a combination of a treemap layout and a suitable graph layout to …

Acculturation And Belongingness: The Keys To International Student Satisfaction, Semehar Ghebrekidan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to explore if acculturation in conjunction with belongingness, affected international student satisfaction. With the changes in immigration, the political climate as a whole and college campus demographics, it was important to evaluate what stress factors international students faced while being undergraduate students at a Midwestern University. In addition to using secondary research, primary research was conducted in the form of 4 interviews and 59 electronic surveys. The independent variables that were measured were reorganized into 2 categories: the students’ religious beliefs and the country where the student is from. Themes that came across throughout …
Escalation And Radicalization In Bosnia And Herzegovina : A Micro-Comparative Study Of Genocide, Damir Kovacevic
Escalation And Radicalization In Bosnia And Herzegovina : A Micro-Comparative Study Of Genocide, Damir Kovacevic
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Why does genocide occur in some locations and at some times but not in other locations or at other times? My project seeks to analyze the complex, dynamic, and extraordinary phenomenon of genocide by applying the micro-comparative method. I argue that genocide should not be studied as a two-stage process of policy and implementation, but rather as part of a multi-dimensional framework that is subject to various conditions. By framing the research this way, we can answer two important shortcomings in current studies of genocide: Why is genocide the outcome in some cases of political violence, but not in other …
Corporate Outsourcing To Take Advantage Of Cheap Labor In Developing Countries, Cecily Schenimann
Corporate Outsourcing To Take Advantage Of Cheap Labor In Developing Countries, Cecily Schenimann
Senior Honors Theses
Corporate outsourcing is a common practice for many large corporations, and a primary reason that corporations outsource is financial: production in other countries, especially those that are developing is significantly less expensive. There are various reasons corporations use outsourcing and this choice often results in subpar and unhealthy labor conditions for those individuals working in developing countries. Reviews of China, Bangladesh, and El Salvador reveal that operations in developing countries often result in harmful working atmospheres. A call for increased corporate responsibility and accountability for corporations who choose to take their manufacturing and production elsewhere, but specifically to developing nations, …

Exploring Student Retention In Postsecondary Agriculture, Food, And Natural Resources Education Programs, Aaron J. Mckim, Tyson J. Sorensen, R. Bud Mckendree, Catlin M. Pauley
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
The current analysis foregrounded postsecondary agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) education programs through an analysis of learning community, social community, general self-efficacy, and major commitment. Analysis identified statistically significant differences in major commitment perceived by year in school, with students earlier in their program reporting statistically higher major commitment than those later in their program. In congruence with the theoretical framework of student learning and persistence, the outcome variable general self-efficacy was modeled with year in school, learning community, and social community as predictors. In total, the model predicted 16% of the variance in general self-efficacy with social community …

Estimating Population Growth Of Las Vegas, Ryan Desacola, Jacob Valadez, Ryan S. Tan
Math 365 Class Projects
An issue we have identified is Las Vegas' population growth. To those that live in Las Vegas, many know that Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States of America; due to its rampant growth, projecting future population growth is of utmost importance in order to prepare public utilities, housing developments, and other such services for the inevitable incrase. Consequently, for our project, we are attempting to extrapolate upon existing population growth trends (identified by censuses of years past) and utilize the method of least squares to turn out extrapolation into a mathematical prediction.
Rock Paper Scissors And Evolutionary Game Theory, Christian Cordova, Rudolf Jovero, Evan Thomas
Rock Paper Scissors And Evolutionary Game Theory, Christian Cordova, Rudolf Jovero, Evan Thomas
Math 365 Class Projects
In Rock Paper Scissors (RPS), three different "species" compete, but no single species has a dominating strategy. In evolutionary game theory, replicator equations model population densities over time. When a mutation is introduced, they are called "replicator-mutator" equations. Using the replicator-mutator equation in [1] we have shown how population density of three species change.
Racial Minority Immigrant Acculturation: Examining Filipino Settlement Experiences In Canada Utilizing A Community-Focused Acculturation Framework, Renato M. Liboro
Racial Minority Immigrant Acculturation: Examining Filipino Settlement Experiences In Canada Utilizing A Community-Focused Acculturation Framework, Renato M. Liboro
Psychology Faculty Research
By incorporating perspectives from Community Psychology into Berry’s (1997) acculturation framework from Cross-cultural Psychology, a more community-focused acculturation framework was developed and proposed in this essay. Elements from Community Psychology that focus on group-specific settings, community-level analysis, sociocultural resources, sociopolitical forces, and roles of grassroots organizations and host societies in challenging institutional power were consolidated into Berry’s acculturation framework to establish a new framework with a stronger community focus. In a theoretical application utilizing the new community-focused framework, socio-historical accounts of and discourse on Filipino experiences prior to the beginnings of the Filipino diaspora to Canada in the mid-1990s and …
Role Of Marital Quality In Explaining Depressive Symptoms After Marital Termination Among Older Adults, Minzhi Ye, Alfred Demaris, Monica A. Longmore
Role Of Marital Quality In Explaining Depressive Symptoms After Marital Termination Among Older Adults, Minzhi Ye, Alfred Demaris, Monica A. Longmore
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
This study assesses whether prior marital quality moderates the impact of divorce or widowhood on subsequent depression. Poor marital quality may buffer depression associated with divorce/widowhood; conversely, the effect of divorce/widowhood on depression could be exacerbated by previous marital quality. Three waves from the National Survey of Families and Households based on respondents, ages 50 and older, (N = 2,570) included eight marital quality measures. We find limited evidence suggesting higher marital quality elevates, while lower marital quality decreases, depression after divorce. No moderating effects were found for widowhood. Additionally, health condition is more important than current marital status …
Exploring The Role Of Urban Early Career Teachers' Perceptions Of Social Elements Of The School Context And Their Feelings Of Teacher Efficacy, Kristine Anne Herrell
Exploring The Role Of Urban Early Career Teachers' Perceptions Of Social Elements Of The School Context And Their Feelings Of Teacher Efficacy, Kristine Anne Herrell
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Teacher turnover is a problem impacting students, schools, and the community. Teacher turnover is highest in urban, high-poverty schools servicing primarily minority students with approximately half of teachers leaving within their first five years. High turnover rates negatively impact students and schools through instructional discontinuity and financial hardships. The factors that are most predictive of a teacher's decision to stay or leave (perceptions of supports, colleague relationships, principal leadership, student discipline, teacher efficacy) are evident in the empirical literature. Less is known about early career teachers' (ECTs') specific interactions and experiences that contribute to their perceptions of these factors. Utilizing …
Examination Of The Relationship Between Classism And Career Agency, Lucy Charlene Parker
Examination Of The Relationship Between Classism And Career Agency, Lucy Charlene Parker
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Classism is a recently studied, but historically existent form of oppression. Classism may involve students feeling that they cannot pursue a degree or career due to discrimination related to their social class status. This study explored the relationship between classism, gender, age, race, socioeconomic status, and career agency through survey design research. Career agency is the primary dependent variable in this study. Career agency includes career choice, career forethought, and career related actions related. Psychometrically established instruments including The Experiences With Perceived Classism Scale-Short Form and The Career Futures Inventory-Revised were used to assess classism and career agency. Using this …
