To Pass Or Not To Pass? Constructing And Negotiating Biracial Identity, Anthony Peavy Jan 2018

To Pass Or Not To Pass? Constructing And Negotiating Biracial Identity, Anthony Peavy

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of this research is to show how biracial people narrate their identities and how people in society influence biracial individuals' constructions of their self. This is significant because this research obtains perspectives from individuals who simultaneously occupy a privileged and underprivileged identity. In highlighting the experiences of biracial people and their constructions of the self, this research answered questions surrounding how they perform their identities in social situations and how they negotiate passing privileges granted to some based on visual perceptions and/or skin tone.

This research was done using qualitative research methodologies, as these give more insights into …

The Future Of Transit, Dan Boyle Jan 2018

The Future Of Transit, Dan Boyle

Journal of Public Transportation

Predicting the future is fun to do. Dreaming of possibilities while not being tethered to the chain of reality seems to be wired into our DNA. It doesn't matter that we are nearly always going to be wrong, nor that almost anything we come up with is some version of The Jetsons. The combination of human ingenuity and bold new technologies (helped along by artists' renderings) virtually promise a future of fun and ease.

Thee key word is virtually. Although, if the next major technological breakthrough were to be a time machine that could transport us back to the …

Rewriting Patriarchal Norms In Academia: Invitational Rhetoric In A Crowdsourced Survey, Rachel Molko Jan 2018

Rewriting Patriarchal Norms In Academia: Invitational Rhetoric In A Crowdsourced Survey, Rachel Molko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to understand the how texts are constructed to forward feminist communicative objectives through a case study of Dr. Karen Kelsky’s "A Crowdsourced Survey of Sexual Harassment in the Academy." In this research, sexual harassment is understood as an act of power, sexual in nature, enacted by faculty or staff (employed or contracted in different capacities) in their relations with other faculty or staff, who are often lower ranking. By adopting invitational rhetoric as a theoretical framework, this thesis examines the way Dr. Karen Kelsky's crowdsourced survey creates the space to articulate and elevate often suppressed personal testimony …

Half The Sky, Or Half A Lie? Unfulfilled Promises To Women In Republican China, Rachel Finlayson Jan 2018

Half The Sky, Or Half A Lie? Unfulfilled Promises To Women In Republican China, Rachel Finlayson

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

When the Qing dynasty fell in 1912, Chinese nationalist and communist forces fought to gain power. Both groups looked to build their base of support among the socially repressed, which included women and peasants. Thus, women’s emancipation became a central issue, and it remained primary until 1924, during an era known as the May Fourth Movement (Lan and Fong 1999, p. ix). Nationalist and communist forces both promised women better lives, in terms of education, love in marriage, value in family life, a role in the revolution and social activism, and emancipation. Mao Zedong summarized the enthusiasm of the time …

Confucius Institutes: Expelling A Trojan Horse Or Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth?, Michael J. Swain Jan 2018

Confucius Institutes: Expelling A Trojan Horse Or Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth?, Michael J. Swain

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

During the past ten years, China has actively promoted its Confucius Institute (CI), a program of instruction in Chinese language and culture for college students outside of China. The program’s stated purpose is to meet an existing demand for education in Chinese language and culture, with the intent of strengthening relationships between China and other countries in order to promote a more harmonious world. However, many have viewed the CI program as nothing more than an expansion of Beijing’s soft power. Some Western institutions have even expelled CIs from their campuses. The growing concern suggests that China’s offering of what …

Routine Activities In A Virtual Space: A Taiwanese Case Of An Atm Hacking Spree., Ming-Li Hsieh, Shun-Yung Kevin Wang Jan 2018

Routine Activities In A Virtual Space: A Taiwanese Case Of An Atm Hacking Spree., Ming-Li Hsieh, Shun-Yung Kevin Wang

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Routine activity theory (RAT) was initially proposed to explain shifts in urban crime rates in the late 1970s, and has subsequently been applied to predictions of predatory criminal or victimization events. Despite a number of studies attempting to apply RAT to the vast array of crimes now taking place in a virtual environment such as phishing, fraud, malware infection, identify theft, computer viruses and cyber stalking on the Internet in Western countries, little is known about whether RAT could address automatic teller machine (ATM) hacking in an Asian setting. The current study applies RAT in order to examine a high-profile …

Debris, Diatoms, And Dolphins: Tracking Child Engagement At A Public Science Festival, Kaya Van Beynen, Theresa G. Burress Jan 2018

Debris, Diatoms, And Dolphins: Tracking Child Engagement At A Public Science Festival, Kaya Van Beynen, Theresa G. Burress

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Visitors to public science festivals have a tremendous amount of free choice to decide how to navigate through the festival, as well as when, where, and how long to stop at an exhibit. This study examines how elementary-aged children individually or collaboratively engaged with festival exhibits at a public science festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. Although many exhibit activities are designed to appeal to children, no research has been done with regard to child engagement with one-day, outdoor science festivals, such as this one. Engagement can be measured by unobtrusive observation of the behavior and interactions of children. Factors that …

A Review Of Taiwanese Trust In The Police With Alternative Interpretations., Shun-Yung Kevin Wang Jan 2018

A Review Of Taiwanese Trust In The Police With Alternative Interpretations., Shun-Yung Kevin Wang

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

This study aims to review and reinterpret Taiwanese citizens’ trust in the police, with a focus on taking its social changes, political transitions, and historical background into consideration. Modern Taiwan inherits both Chinese and Japanese cultures, and the urbanization on the island has generated substantial differences between rural areas and metropolitans. The political system has also successfully transformed from authoritarianism to democracy since late 1980s and subsequently leads to paradigm shift in policing. All of the contemporary empirical studies regarding public assessments of the police are based on survey data, however, they either poorly measure the multi-dimensional nature of trust …

See The Connections? Addressing Leadership And Supervision Challenges To Support Improved Student Achievement In A Small Rural School., Jenifer J. Hartman

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

This case study was developed for educational leadership courses addressing supervision and school improvement. Various data are presented for students to analyze and identify key concerns at a low-performing, rural, racially diverse, K-8 school. It challenges leadership candidates to recognize interrelated problems and solutions in a school. Students are asked to prioritize responses to issues of changing school leadership, professional development to address teacher expectations, English Language Arts achievement, instructional and disciplinary practices, student behaviors and attendance, and parent engagement practices. They will develop a specific schoolwide professional development plan within an overall School Improvement Plan to address these concerns.

Preserving, Digitizing, And Sustaining The Weekly Challenger, A Local African-American Newspaper., Catherine A. Cardwell, Alexandra Curran

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

A local newspaper in Saint Petersburg, Florida, The Weekly Challenger was established in 1967 with the goal of documenting and sharing information about the African-American community at a time when other local news outlets largely ignored it. Through a special legislative appropriation from the State of Florida, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg received funding to preserve, digitize, and sustain the newspaper. In this article, the authors discuss the steps taken to build the repository for the newspaper’s print and electronic archives, including photographs and videotaped interviews with a long-time publisher. Going Gaga: Pop Fandom As Online Community Of Practice, John D. N. Carter Jan 2018

Going Gaga: Pop Fandom As Online Community Of Practice, John D. N. Carter

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Among various fan sites dedicated to pop stars, GagaDaily is one prominent online collective that centers around Lady Gaga. This study is a piece of ethnographic research focused on two claims – GagaDaily constitutes a Community of Practice (Eckert, 2006) in an online setting, and the regular use of humor by users fulfills social and pragmatic roles in the discourse. Communicative phenomena (both textual and graphic) that characterize the linguistic repertoire of GagaDaily members were catalogued from the first 100 pages of one thread within the forums. These data were grouped into categories corresponding to different dimensions of language use …

Public School Teacher Support Of Transgender Students, Phoebe Singletary

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Using qualitative interviews, this study explored public school support of transgender students using questions concerning their knowledge, ideas of what inclusion looks like, level of preparation for teaching transgender students, and openness to learning new information concerning best practices. This study aims to fill gaps in the existing research concerning experiences of transgender public school students, examining teacher support for the sake of helping determine policy steps and education that would best help transgender students looking for inclusive education. Emerging themes included generalized acceptance, fear of teaching outside curriculum, emphasis placed on student needs, and teachers' desires to learn more. …

Investigating A Potential Relationship Between Sibling Gender Composition And Health Behavior Indicators In Young Adult And Adolescent Males, Taylor N. Goss Jan 2018

Investigating A Potential Relationship Between Sibling Gender Composition And Health Behavior Indicators In Young Adult And Adolescent Males, Taylor N. Goss

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The presence of siblings during childhood and adolescence has a significant impact on the behaviors and perceptions of adults later in life. Effects of mixed-gendered sibling dyads on delinquent behavior, gender typing, and romantic and sexual relationships are of interest. These behaviors can lead to notable health disparities, making it imperative to gain insight into factors associated with such behaviors in young adult and adolescent males. This project explored possible correlations between gender composition of siblings and health behavior indicators for violence, competition and risk, and sexual and romantic relationships. Analysis of these variables was performed using data from the …

Evaluating A Multidisciplinary Integrated Management Team Intervention To Improve Maternal And Child Outcomes And Hiv Service Uptake And Retention In Lesotho, Project Soar Jan 2018

Evaluating A Multidisciplinary Integrated Management Team Intervention To Improve Maternal And Child Outcomes And Hiv Service Uptake And Retention In Lesotho, Project Soar

HIV and AIDS

Pregnant and postpartum HIV-positive women face a particularly complex set of barriers to prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) uptake at the policy, health facility, community, and individual levels. They are vulnerable to poor retention in care and adherence to treatment, especially in the first three months after initiation of treatment and the postpartum period. In addition, counseling and support for primary prevention among HIV-negative pregnant women is almost nonexistent in PMTCT programs. This brief describes the IMPROVE study—a multidisciplinary integrated management team intervention to increase maternal and child health and HIV service uptake and retention—that Project SOAR is …

Early Career Exploration As A Strategy To Reduce Loan Debt, Karen Abigail Williams Jan 2018

Early Career Exploration As A Strategy To Reduce Loan Debt, Karen Abigail Williams

Publications and Research

Despite the recent economic recovery, state support for higher education remains below pre-recession levels, making college loan debt a requirement for students from low and middle income families (Mitchell & Leachman, 2015). In cases where they have unmet financial need, students incur supplemental loan debt to attend these institutions, even if their out-of-pocket expenses are less at lower-ranked institutions (Williams, 2012). Study participants who entered college as low-income students recommended that students only assume loan debt if they understand their career goals, potential salaries, and the impact of loan debt on future finances. This article explores how attitudes about upward …

Feeding Fictions: An Artistic Exploration Of Human Tendencies To Group Together And To Divide, Zeyna Hadidi Jan 2018

Feeding Fictions: An Artistic Exploration Of Human Tendencies To Group Together And To Divide, Zeyna Hadidi

Theses & ETDs

A natural impulse for all humans when perceiving data from our surroundings is to sort through the information in order to make sense of our world. Using this information, we evaluate where we stand in relation to our environment. Assumptions based on previous experiences and culturally learned preconceptions affect how we relate with and treat others in a social environment. Those who have dissimilar beliefs and characteristics are met with fear and enmity, while those that are similar to ourselves help to form and justify parts of our individual identities. Using our natural proclivity to sort using prior information, society …

Not Anywhere, Elsewhere: An Ethnographic Look At A Communal Arts Space, Ava Zelkowitz Howard Jan 2018

Not Anywhere, Elsewhere: An Ethnographic Look At A Communal Arts Space, Ava Zelkowitz Howard

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an ethnography of Elsewhere Museum, a nonprofit artist residency and public meeting space in Greensboro, North Carolina. I learned how this living museum, a former thrift store, negotiated its relations to its residents and visitors through participant observation and informal interviews. Elsewhere engages artists and visitors with art and their surroundings’ past, present and future(s) through forms of play, learning, and self and collective reflection. These methods are used purposefully to resist dominant frameworks of power distribution in intentional communities and in the art world.

Imagining Decolonial Love Within And Apart From Two Worlds: Decolonizing Gendered And Racialized Identity Between The U.S. And Spanish Caribbean, Kailah Santos

Theses & ETDs

This project is a portfolio consisting three units of independent pieces on theatrical adaptation and the literary analysis, but the pieces speak to each other through the theoretical lens of the Decolonial Imagination. Decoloniality seeks to deconstruct, resist, and vision alternatives to racist, classist, and gendered social and epistemic formations that pervade the contemporary bodies and minds of descendants of European colonization. Unit I is a reflection on a praxis of the decolonial imagination I carried out through directing a Bilingual theatrical production I adapted from Spanish short stories written by Puerto Rican women. Unit II presents two pieces on …

Predicting Staff Assault In Juvenile Correctional Facilities, Howard Henderson Jan 2018

Predicting Staff Assault In Juvenile Correctional Facilities, Howard Henderson

Center for Justice Research Reports

This study examines the predictive utility of the community-based Positive Achievement Change Tool–Prescreen (PACT-PS) for staff assault in a sample of 787 state-committed male youth. Bivariate and multivariate analyses indicated the PACT-PS failed to predict staff assault across racial/ethnic groups. Notably, this study also found youth with serious delinquent histories and prior commitments improved the PACT-PS’s ability to predict staff assault. Limitations of this study, suggestions for future research, and practical implications are discussed.

A Multilevel Model Of Collaboration And Creativity, Michael Beyerlein, Soo Jeoung Han, Ambika Prasad

Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The progress of science requires the growth of understanding in both directions, downward from the whole to the parts and upward from the parts to the whole.

—FREEMAN DYSON, 1996, p.2

Creativity does not occur in a vacuum. An enabling environment must exist. Whether creativity is at the breakthrough level or a cluster of micro-level events, it requires environments with special facets—especially collaboration that enables knowledge sharing and idea synthesis.
