No. 09: The State Of Household Food Security In Nanjing, China, Zhenzhong Si, Taiyang Zhong
No. 09: The State Of Household Food Security In Nanjing, China, Zhenzhong Si, Taiyang Zhong
Hungry Cities Partnership
This report on the state of food security in Nanjing, China, is based on a 2015 city-wide survey conducted by Nanjing University and the Hungry Cities Partnership. The research found that most of the city’s residents are food secure, with access to desirable foods and high dietary diversity throughout the year. Nanjing has a high level of economic development, low unemployment, and spatially dense food supply networks. However, a high average level of food security obscures the finding that about one household in five is food insecure according to the Household Food Insecurity Access Prevalence indicator. Female-centred households, households that …

No. 10: The State Of Household Food Security In Maputo, Mozambique, Inês Raimundo, Cameron Mccordic, Abel Chikanda
Hungry Cities Partnership
The Hungry Cities Partnership aims to promote inclusive growth in urban food systems in Maputo and other cities of the Global South. The production of new empirical knowledge about the levels of household food security and the various facets of the urban food system is a core component of this effort. This report presents and analyses findings from a city-wide survey of 2,071 households that found that most Maputo households are food insecure and that more than a third can be categorized as severely food insecure. Dietary diversity in the city is extremely low and almost half of households had …

Hungry Cities Partnership
This report presents and analyzes the findings of a household food security survey conducted by Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana as part of the Hungry Cities Partnership in Mexico City from January 10-19, 2016. It is a supplement to HCP Report No. 7: The Urban Food System of Mexico City, Mexico (Capron et al 2017). HCP Report No. 7 discusses the history, demography and economy of Mexico City, and contains an overview of the existing literature on its changing food system. This report provides a foundation for future research of Mexico City’s food system, its food security and informal sector. It also …

Hungry Cities Partnership
This research report presents and analyzes the findings of a household food secu-rity survey conducted in the City of Cape Town, South Africa, by the Hun-gry Cities Partnership (HCP) and the African Food Security Urban Network (AFSUN) in 2013 and 2014. It is a supplement to, and should be read in con-junction with, AFSUN Urban Food Series No. 11: The State of Urban Food Insecurity in Cape Town (Battersby 2011) and HCP Report No. 3: The Urban Food System of Cape Town, South Africa (Crush et al 2017).

No. 15: The Food Security Implications Of Gendered Access To Education And Employment In Maputo, Cameron Mccordic, Liam Riley, Inês Raimundo
Hungry Cities Partnership
The multiple linkages between gender and household food security in cities have been observed in diverse settings, at multiple scales, and through a variety of disciplinary lenses. The Hungry Cities Partnership is rooted in the importance of inclusive growth of cities, which includes a fundamental concern with genderbased injustices that reduce inclusivity, sustainability and food security by underpinning structural poverty. This discussion paper is motivated by the gap in policy-ready quantitative data needed to identify the ways in which gender inequality, food insecurity, and public policy are interconnected. Analysis of the 2014 survey of household food security in Maputo identified …

No. 80: Problematizing The Foreign Shop: Justifications For Restricting The Migrant Spaza Sector In South Africa, Vanya Gastrow
Southern African Migration Programme
Small businesses owned by international migrants and refugees are often the target of xenophobic hostility and attack in South Africa. This report examines the problematization of migrant-owned businesses in South Africa, and the regulatory efforts aimed at curtailing their economic activities. In so doing, it sheds light on the complex ways in which xenophobic fears are generated and manifested in the country’s social, legal and political orders. Efforts to curb migrant spaza shops in South Africa have included informal trade agreements at local levels, fining migrant shops, and legislation that prohibits asylum seekers from operating businesses in the country. Several …
An Intersection In Population Control: Welfare Reform And Indigenous People With A Partial Capacity To Work In The Australian Northern Territory, Louise St Guillaume, Cate Thill
An Intersection In Population Control: Welfare Reform And Indigenous People With A Partial Capacity To Work In The Australian Northern Territory, Louise St Guillaume, Cate Thill
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
In Australia, in the last decade, there have been significant policy changes to income support payments for people with a disability and Indigenous people. These policy reforms intersect in the experience of Indigenous people with a partial capacity to work in the Northern Territory who are subject to compulsory income management if classified as long-term welfare payment recipients. This intersection is overlooked in existing research and government policy. In this article, we apply intersectionality and Southern disability theory as frameworks to analyse how Indigenous people with a partial capacity to work (PCW) in the Northern Territory are governed under compulsory …

Teaching Social Justice On Campus For Self-Awareness, Community Sustainability, And Systems Change, Judy Rashid
Faculty Publications
Published in Reframing Campus Conflict: Student Conduct Practice Through a Social Justice Lens (Stylus Publishing, 2009), edited by Jennifer Meyer Schrage and Nancy Geist Giacomini, this chapter by Dr. Judy Rashid explores the critical role of teaching social justice in higher education. The chapter, titled "Teaching Social Justice on Campus for Self-Awareness, Community Sustainability, and Systems Change," emphasizes the integration of social justice principles into both curricular and co-curricular experiences. Rashid draws from theoretical and practical frameworks—including the work of Thomas Tritton, John Pettit, bell hooks, and Paulo Freire—to argue for a transformative model of education. She presents strategies for …

School of Professional Studies
In this project, several comparison schools were interviewed and disclosed to have used search lists to find candidates. The organizations that have valuable search lists which may be of good use for the School of Professional Studies include Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). By choosing criteria such as demographics, location, academic performance, educational history provided by search lists, we believe there are many quality candidates for SPS programs. However, as we further investigated the functionality and cost-efficiency or return of investment of GRE search list, we spotted many uncertainties and few solid and successful …
Effects Of Father Absence On Age Of Sexual Activity And Current Stress And Attachment Levels Of Young Adult Women, Stephanie Glenn
Effects Of Father Absence On Age Of Sexual Activity And Current Stress And Attachment Levels Of Young Adult Women, Stephanie Glenn
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
This study bridges the gap in literature about the impact of father absence on female adult attachment and current stress levels. A sample of 666 female college students between the ages of 18 and 22 at the University of Kentucky was recruited to complete an online survey about their experience with their fathers and the effects on their attachment and stress levels, while assessing the age of their first sexual experience. Father absence seems to be a significant predictor of earlier sexual activity among females and anxious attachment styles, along with higher stress levels. When the father is absent from …

Early Contributions To Infants’ Mental Rotation Abilities, Mihaela Constantinescu, David S. Moore, Scott P. Johnson, Melissa Hines
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Some cognitive abilities exhibit reliable gender differences, with females outperforming males in specific aspects of verbal ability, and males showing an advantage on certain spatial tasks. Among these cognitive gender differences, differences in mental rotation are the most robust, and appear to be present even in infants. A large body of animal research suggests that gonadal hormones, particularly testosterone, during early development could contribute to this gender difference in mental rotation. Also, substantial evidence supports an influence of socialization on mental rotation performance. The present study investigated the relationship of two types of factors, early postnatal testosterone exposure and parental …

This Will Change Everything: Teaching The Climate Crisis, John Foran, Summer Gray, Corrie Grosse, Theo Lequesne

We argue that U.S. sociologists have been woefully remiss in incorporating the climate crisis into our research agendas and even more, into our teaching. After laying out the gravity of the situation we issue a call for sociologists to consider whether they wish to continue this striking denial of responsibility to our students and to knowledge production. We then present four ways that we have infused our understanding of climate change, climate crisis, and climate justice into courses on global issues, social movements, inequality, and much more. We believe that “climate justice” – the key concept that drives our concern …
Kinship, Ellen Block
Kinship, Ellen Block
Sociology Faculty Publications
Kinship is a term used broadly in the social sciences, particularly in anthropology, to mean the web of social relationships that make up families. It is a useful framework for thinking about changes over the life span because people’s roles within their families and social networks change as they age and as the social, political, and economic contexts in which they live shift. There are three main concepts that help to explain the importance of kinship across the life span: Kinship is created through practice, kinship is processual, and kinship is inherently flexible. This entry provides a brief history of …

The New Settlement Tools, Bernard Chao, Christopher Robertson, David Yokum
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
By protecting the right to a jury, the state and federal constitutions recognize the fundamental value of having civil and criminal disputes resolved by laypersons. Actual trials, however, are relatively rare, in part because parties seek to avoid the risks and cost of trials and courts seek to clear dockets efficiently. But as desirable as settlement may be, it can be a difficult way to resolve a dispute. Parties view their cases from different perspectives, and these perspectives often cause both sides to be overly optimistic and to expect unreasonably large or unreasonably small resolutions.

If You Build It, They Will Come: What Students Say About Experiential Learning, David I.C. Thomson, Stephen Daniels
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Our purpose here is to explore one of the “natural experiments” cited by the Task Force: the Experiential Advantage (EA) program at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law (Denver Law). EA was developed as a part of a greater general focus on experiential learning and is built upon the three “Carnegie Apprenticeships” – “the intellectual or cognitive,” “the forms of expert practice,” and “identity and purpose.” It was implemented at Denver Law starting with students entering in August 2013. To explore this natural experiment, we took a particular route and did so for what we see as good …
Against Women’S Sports, Nancy Leong
Against Women’S Sports, Nancy Leong
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This Article challenges the longstanding assumption that sports should be segregated by sex. Imposing sex segregation on sports is problematic for many reasons. It reflects and reinforces a long-disproven binary view of both sex and gender. It communicates that women are physically unable to compete against men, even though research indicates considerable variation among individual athletes and different sports, and further reveals that attributes other than sex are more important determinants of athletic ability. It reinforces unfounded gender stereotypes that harm both women and men. And sex segregation uncritically prioritizes athletic activities involving strengths typically associated with male bodies, without …

Touching Queerness In Disney Films Dumbo And Lilo & Stitch, Katia Perea
Publications and Research
Disney’s influence as a cultural purveyor is difficult to overstate. From cinema screen to television programming, vacation theme parks to wardrobe, toys and books, Disney’s consistent ability to entertain children as well as adults has made it a mainstay of popular culture. This research will look at two Disney films, Dumbo (1941) and Lilo & Stitch (2002), both from distinctly different eras, and analyze the similarities in artistic styling, studio financial climate, and their narrative representation of otherness as it relates to Queer identity.

Institutional Theory And The History Of District-Level School Reform: A Reintroduction, Judith R. Kafka
Institutional Theory And The History Of District-Level School Reform: A Reintroduction, Judith R. Kafka
Publications and Research
In this chapter I make my case for the utility of institutionalism for historians of education, first by explaining institutional theory and how it has been applied to, and shaped by, the study of schooling, and then by applying new theoretical developments to district-level historical research using examples drawn from earlier chapters in this volume. Ultimately, institutional theory may help us to interrogate Tyack and Cuban’s notion of institutional change in schools, by elaborating on their construction of the change process through specific, embedded, settings, and by rethinking how we determine what “counts” as change in schools and districts.

Debunking The Narratives Of Inclusion: Immigration Policy In Quebec, Canada, And The United States In The Age Of Trump, Olivia A. Kurajian
Undergraduate Review
Narratives of inclusion and successful immigration stories permeate Canadian popular culture. Often compared as an equally desirable destination to the United States, Canada is frequently heralded as a refuge for immigrants; specifically, those seeking asylum. Frequently exalted as a morally superior nation to its southerly neighbors, Canada represents itself in the international arena as a country that celebrates, respects, and cares for all of its members—regardless of their sometimes precarious immigration status by emphasizing the multiculturalism of Canadian society. Such stories also permeate national history and therefore leave out the voices of the “other” and ignore episodes of overt discrimination. …

Battleground Texas: Gendered Media Framing Of The 2014 Texas Gubernatorial Race, Susan E. Waters, Elizabeth A. Dudash-Buskirk, Rachel M. Pipan
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
Feminist political theory is a sprawling theoretical field that intertwines sociological and philosophical perspectives and applies them to the study of campaigns, policy, voting, and the general structure of what Americans call politics. In Western democratic republics, the concept of participation has been hotly debated, specifically with regard to voting. Applying the critical lens of an intersectional feminist perspective introduces questions about the participation of different genders, races, classes, and cultural groups in political action, voting, and running for office. Before equal representation can be attained (if that is, indeed, desirable), it is important to understand how our politics are …
