Terrence Chong, Ed. Pentecostal Megachurches In Southeast Asia: Negotiating Class, Consumption And The Nation. Singapore: Iseas-Yusof Ishak Institute, 2018, 243 Pp., Ia Denise Arnette Marañon

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: When the term “megachurch” is employed in works regarding the sociology of religion, the discussion typically revolves around the church’s efficient growth. This growth-centric perspective is often explored at length when considering the contributions of the megachurch as a method of organization for typically Christian churches. However, in understanding the megachurch, much more needs to be examined. Edited by Terence Chong, the Pentecostal Megachurches in Southeast Asia: Negotiating Class, Consumption and the Nation ingeniously characterizes the megachurch. Chong together with the contributors to this book captured a distinct scholarly gap in understanding the megachurch.

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: To presume to write the history of an entire discipline—particularly one as massive as Asian Studies—would be rightfully characterized as ambitious (if not even presumptuous). If only because of the real challenges Asia as a subject of study itself poses, attempting to characterize Asia by a “unifying” logic tends to be a frustrating (if not ultimately misguided) exercise. Hence, it is quite normal for books about the field of Asian Studies to specialize and segment specifically on which region of Asia the contributors to a volume focus on—if only to facilitate the multiplicity of questions and possible discursive concerns …

The Ethics Of Play And Participation In A Tween Virtual World: Cheating Practices And Perspectives In The Whyville Community, Yasmin B. Kafai, Deborah A. Fields, Estee Ellis

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Much attention has been paid to young people’s increased participation in digital publics and its potential impact on their development and learning. However, few studies have examined the ethics in online play and their interactions as a critical aspect in the development of youth digital culture. In this paper we turn to the issue of cheating, a widely accepted practice in many online communities, including Whyville.net, a virtual world with over 5.5 million registered players ages 8-16. Our analyses focused on culturally-relevant examples such as player-written articles on cheating and player-produced YouTube cheating videos associated with Whyville from 2000 to …

Women Empowerment Or Disempowerment?: A Case Study Of A Social Microfinance’S Activities And Gender Relations In Rizal Province, Héritier Raphaël Mesa

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Women’s empowerment has been at the center of the development discourse as one of the eight declared Millennium Development Goals. To date, an increasing number of development organizations are focusing on helping poor women achieve economic sustainability, and social enterprise in its microfinance scheme is playing a leading role in providing women with needed capabilities to increase their agency in the development process. The success of microfinance in empowering women today has been a debatable subject in the economic and development realms, thus leading to a need to reassess some of the microfinance claims. How does it really empower women? …

Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman Nov 2018

Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman

Duke Law Journal

Three widely discussed explanations of the punitive carceral state are racism, harsh drug laws, and prosecutorial overreach. These three narratives, however, only partially explain how our correctional system expanded to its current overcrowded state. Neglected in our discussion of mass incarceration is our largely forgotten history of the long-term, wholesale institutionalization of the disabled. This form of mass detention, motivated by a continuing application of eugenics and persistent class-based discrimination, is an important part of our history of imprisonment, one that has shaped key contours of our current supersized correctional system. Only by fully exploring this forgotten narrative of long-term …

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof. Nov 2018

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The development of web search engines has provided an alternative for undergraduates to access the needed information for their research activities without utilising library resources, especially reference sources. This avenue created by web search engines is viewed by some as detrimental, as undergraduates now display apathy towards the use of reference sources, even though web search engines have their own limitations. Based on this, the main objective of this study was therefore to examine undergraduates’ preference between web search engines and reference sources for research activities. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the study population consisted of …

Looking Past The Images: Art And Film As Propaganda Apparatuses, Alexander Schumm Nov 2018

Looking Past The Images: Art And Film As Propaganda Apparatuses, Alexander Schumm

Theses

This paper aims to show that art and film can operate as propaganda in subtle and unintentional ways. Jacques Ellul called such propaganda “sociological propaganda.” Recent work in philosophy has relied on the notion of intention in defining how propaganda works to affect the beliefs and attitudes of its recipients. This paper argues that intention is not a necessary condition for messages to be propagandistic and works to decouple propaganda from intention. Because our current models rely on intention in defining propaganda, recent work in philosophy cannot account for sociological propaganda. Ellul’s gestures toward defining propaganda explicitly feature intention as …

Keep Your Distance: People Sit Farther Away From A Man With Schizophrenia Versus Diabetes, Ryan Thibodeau, Heather M. Principino

Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications

Although concrete behavior—such as avoidance, discrimination, rejection—is foundational to most definitions of stigma, knowledge of psychiatric stigma has been constructed mostly on the basis of measurement of self-reported attitudes, beliefs, and feelings. To help fill this gap, the current study examined avoidance behavior in psychiatric stigma. That is, we predicted that people would seek more physical distance from a man with a psychiatric problem than a man with a medical problem. One hundred fourteen undergraduates expected to meet a man with either Type II diabetes or schizophrenia. After completing several measures of self-reported stigma, participants eventually moved to an adjacent …

Segregation Academies Then And School Choice Configurations Today In Deep South States, Marilyn Grady, Sharon C. Hoffman Nov 2018

Segregation Academies Then And School Choice Configurations Today In Deep South States, Marilyn Grady, Sharon C. Hoffman

Contemporary Issues in Educational Leadership

In the following article, we present a brief historical review of segregation academies and their impact on students and public schools. Based on the review, we provide a portrait of the vestiges of segregation academies that appear to be currently re-emerging in different educational configurations throughout the U.S. and particularly in Deep South states.

The purpose of a historical study is to provide a descriptive overview of specific social problems confined within a predetermined timeframe (Danto, 2008). This historical review’s purpose was to address the following inquiry: What were the characteristics of Deep South segregation academies designed to circumvent Brown …

Applying Task Force Recommendations On Integrating Science And Practice In Health Service Psychology Education, Timothy P. Melchert, Sharon Berry, Catherine Grus, Prerna Arora, Andres De Los Reyes, Tammy L. Hughes, Bruce Eugene Moyer, Jennifer Moye, Frederick L. Oswald, Ronald H. Rozensky

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The proper role of research skills and training to conduct research in professional psychology education has been controversial throughout the history of the field. An extensive effort was undertaken recently to address that issue and identify ways the field might move forward in a more unified manner. In 2015, the American Psychological Association (APA) Board of Educational Affairs convened a task force to address one of the recommendations made by the Health Service Psychology Education Collaborative in 2013. That recommendation stated that the education and training of health service psychologists (HSPs) include an integrative approach to science and practice that …

Commons: Can This Be The Name Of ‘Thirdness’? (Revised), Roger A. Lohmann Nov 2018

Commons: Can This Be The Name Of ‘Thirdness’? (Revised), Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In 1995, a journal article asked if 'commons' might be the name of 'thirdness'. In this revision of that article the question is renewed and reintroduced. The concept of the commons and common goods still offer satisfactory ways to label and characterize voluntary action outside markets, states and households. Theory is said to be a problem of language. Language creativity, including the coining of various new terms is a characteristic part of the commons theory of voluntary action. The remaining challenge is how the concept of the commons can relate to the other side of the third sector - the …
