Inducing Development: Social Remittances And The Expansion Of Oil Palm In The Philippines, Marvin Joseph F. Montefrio, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Ma. Rose Cristy B. Josol
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper investigates the relationship between social remittances andland-use change in the context of South–South migration. Focusingon the cyclical movement of Filipino oil palm workers between thePhilippine province of Palawan and the Malaysian State of Sabah, weshow how migrants transmit social remittances, such as ideas of pros-perity associated with oil palm development and knowledge of pro-duction practices and land impacts of oil palm plantations. Thesesocial remittances affect farmers’ decisions to engage in oil palmdevelopment within the migrants’ home province, possibly transform-ing subsistence agricultural systems into large-scale, monocrop planta-tions. We argue that such land development outcomes are anunderstudied aspect of how …
Multiculturalism On Its Head: Unexpected Social Boundaries And New Migration In Singapore, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Multiculturalism On Its Head: Unexpected Social Boundaries And New Migration In Singapore, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This study investigates how discourses of multiculturalism shape publicdebates surrounding new migration in Singapore. Singapore’s immigration policiesled to the influx of Chinese and Indian professionals, many of whom share race andclass identities with local Singaporeans. However, Singaporeans of Chinese and Indianbackgrounds rejected these presumed similarities, using discourses of multiculturalismto differentiate themselves from co-ethnic migrants. Based on a content analysis ofnews reports and online forums, this study shows how local actors portrayed newmigrants as too prejudiced or bigoted to adapt to Singapore’s multiracial society, thereby creating a paradoxical application of multicultural ideals. This example high-lights how contemporary immigration is creating diverse forms …
Education As Early Stage Brokerage: Cooling Out Aspiring Migrants For The Global Hotel Industry, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Education As Early Stage Brokerage: Cooling Out Aspiring Migrants For The Global Hotel Industry, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Through an analysis of the field of hotel and restaurant management,a program popular among Filipino youth hoping to find work overseas, this paper argues that an integral, yet invisible, aspect of educating futuremigrant workers is “cooling out” working-class students for a hospitalityindustry that runs on low-wage, contractual labour. This practice of coolingout involves reorienting students’ ambitions towards blue-collar jobs thatdo not require college degrees, encouraging them to start from the bottomin pursuing their migration dreams. Based on qualitative interviews with36 college educators and 25 students, this paper discusses how the cooling-out function serves as a form of migration brokerage, funnelling aspiringmigrants …

Anyone interested in policy studies, policy analysis, policy evaluation and policymanagement should be aware of, and knowledgeable about, the origins, nature andcapabilities of different policy tools. They are a critical part of policy-making, providingthe ‘means’ by which to achieve policy ‘ends’ but also often becoming ends-inthemselves. Policy instruments are and have been the subject of inquiry in many policyrelated fields, including public administration and ‘governance’ studies, but also variousbroader disciplines such as political science and economics. Additionally, they have beena research topic in various policy-specific areas of study such as policy analysis andpolicy studies, as well as in sector-specific areas …
Money And Happiness For College Students, Robin Leonard
Money And Happiness For College Students, Robin Leonard
Honors Theses
This study was designed to expand the field of positive psychology and to investigate the relationship between money and happiness in college students. “Money” was further defined as financial satisfaction, and “happiness” was further defined as overall satisfaction with life for the purposes of the study. Existing psychological research demonstrates that many factors influence overall satisfaction with life, including face consciousness, perceived material wealth, goal setting, motivation orientation, cultural value, and the wealth of one’s home nation. However, less research has been conducted on the effects of finances on happiness. The research that does exist focuses on a specific range …

The Parisian Immigrant Cook: Who Are You?, Siobhán Gough
Masters
This research focuses on the working conditions, professional lives and identities of immigrant cooks working in Paris with a view to improving, through a better understanding of these aspects, their accessibility to the workforce and potential career paths. France is the home of the restaurant and is historically a country of welcome and refuge for migrants. In the past ten years the rhetoric surrounding immigration and migrants has changed and there is growing negativity surrounding this population group despite the many studies pointing to migrant workers’ positive contributions to societies and economies. The culinary industry relies on, and will continue …
‘Commensality’ As A Theatre For Witnessing Change For Criminalised Individuals Working At A Resettlement Scheme., Julie M. Parsons
‘Commensality’ As A Theatre For Witnessing Change For Criminalised Individuals Working At A Resettlement Scheme., Julie M. Parsons
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article draws on analysis of interview data from an exploratory case study at an independent ‘offender’ resettlement scheme in England, investigating the benefits or otherwise of commensality for criminalised individuals and the wider community who share a communal lunchtime meal. For prisoners released on temporary licence and others referred through probation, caught in the liminal space between criminal and civilian life, commensality enables social interaction with non-criminalised individuals in a social environment outside of the prison estate. It becomes an arena for the display of non-criminalised identities in preparation for release into the community after punishment. It is a …

On The Exactitude Of Big Data: La Bêtise And Artificial Intelligence, Noel Fitzpatrick, John D. Kelleher
Articles
This article revisits the question of ‘la bêtise’ or stupidity in the era of Artificial Intelligence driven by Big Data, it extends on the questions posed by Gille Deleuze and more recently by Bernard Stiegler. However, the framework for revisiting the question of la bêtise will be through the lens of contemporary computer science, in particular the development of data science as a mode of analysis, sometimes, misinterpreted as a mode of intelligence. In particular, this article will argue that with the advent of forms of hype (sometimes referred to as the hype cycle) in relation to big data and …
Homework Without Barriers, Hailey Edwards
Homework Without Barriers, Hailey Edwards
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Assigning equitable homework to students from low socioeconomic status (SES) families is a challenge for elementary school teachers. Often, teachers assign traditional homework activities such as weekly packets, projects, and research. Unfortunately, research indicates that students often do not have access to materials, parental help, and/or other resources which their SES advantaged peers may have. This study is important because students should have the opportunity to continue their learning outside of the classroom, and involve their families in their learning. After interviewing teachers at Sand Dune Elementary School, I have used what I have learned to identify action options to …
Getting Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable: Developing Students' Interpersonal Skills, Mariah Lambert
Getting Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable: Developing Students' Interpersonal Skills, Mariah Lambert
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Interpersonal skills are an imperative part of a child’s development. Strategies can be developed by educators to help students build these skills in a productive and positive manner. Based on an analysis of the program director and teacher interview data, students’ interpersonal skills can be enhanced by creating Social Development lessons, creating an interactive learning environment, and exemplifying the importance of properly developed communication skills. It is important for educators to understand how to help their students find the right way to convey their emotions. It is not our job, as teachers, to solve the issue for the students, but, …

On Learning Psycholinguistics Tools For English-Based Creole Languages Using Social Media Data, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) tool is a psycholinguistics tool that has been widely used in both psychology and sociology research, and the LIWC scores derived from user-generated content are known to be good features for personality prediction [1], [2]. LIWC, however, is language specific as it relies on counting the percentage of predefined dictionary words occurring in the content. For content written in English Creoles which are languages based on English, the original English LIWC may not perform optimally due to its lack of words which are only used in the English Creoles. In this paper, we …

Faculty Usage Of Academic Social Networking Sites: A Comparative Analysis, Jayati Chaudhuri, Sarah Baker
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Academic Social Networking sites have been embraced by professors from across disciplines. These sites provide a myriad of networking and collaborative opportunities for faculty to expand their scholarly horizons and broaden their research impact. In this article, we analyzed the usage patterns of three Academic Social Networking sites, namely ResearchGate, Google Scholar Citations, and Academia.edu, at an urban, public, state university in Southern California with a highly diverse student population of more than 28,000 and more than 1700 faculty members. Our objectives are to describe and analyze professors’ use of these three Academic Social Networking sites based on their subject …
Nationalism And Border Violence: The Global Rise In Soft Fascism, Rachel Shimabukuro
Nationalism And Border Violence: The Global Rise In Soft Fascism, Rachel Shimabukuro
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Since the election of Donald Trump in the United States in 2016, there has been a particularly nationalistic, illiberal shift in the way we interact with the rest of the world. As we have favored some while violently excluding others at our borders, the media and press which criticizes these policies is under attack. This shift is not exclusive to the United States and the following research will also focus on the illiberal democratic movements in Hungary, Brazil, the Philippines, and the unfolding right-wing politics of a post-Brexit state. In an explanatory style, this research will focus on Benedict Anderson’s …

Hypermasculinity In The Heavy Metal Subculture, Whitney Doucette
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This study analyzes the dynamics of the heavy metal subculture through the lens of gender. Through fieldwork in the heavy metal culture, themes of discrimination against women were made notable. The sociology of gender, both subtle and conspicuous, was used as a theoretical basis for this research. The purpose of this paper is to study relevant aspects of gender in the contemporary heavy metal subculture. I conducted ten interviews with self-described fans of the music genre, as well as thirty participant observations in the environment in which they dwell. Themes of sexualization and ostracization based on gender expression were apparent. …

From Public Ideology To Socio-Material Reproduction Of Agile Principles: The Case Of Pivotal Labs, Erica L. Wagner, Sue Newell, Neil Ramiller, Jeanne Enders
From Public Ideology To Socio-Material Reproduction Of Agile Principles: The Case Of Pivotal Labs, Erica L. Wagner, Sue Newell, Neil Ramiller, Jeanne Enders
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper focuses on how regular invocation of a public ideology helps sustain local work practices. Existing research acknowledges that there is a recursive relationship between the local practices and the public ideas, with local practices leading to the adaption of public ideas over time. There is little study of how public ideology sustains local practices over the longer term – seeing translation of the ideology as an ongoing process. Through a case study and web-based analysis of Pivotal Labs, an agile software development company, we contribute to socio-material translation studies demonstrating the manifestation of the public ideology in socio-material …

When the BU School of Law community lost Professor Mark Pettit, Jr. last summer, we lost a great teacher, perhaps the best law teacher in the United States. His classes sang even when he was not singing. I have an overwhelming feeling of gratitude at having been Mark’s friend and colleague for the past thirty-four years. When my friends at the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School learned I would be teaching at BU Law, they urged me to seek Mark out. Mark taught there as a clinical instructor before he came to BU, and …

This study employed a multi-case qualitative study design. The participants were 12 Latina/o parents in Chicago who had at least one child who had graduated from a four-year college. Data were collected from interviews, field notes, and documents. A pattern-finding approach was used for data analysis. In this study, all participants shared family values that they …
Asymmetric Relationship Of Urbanization And Co2 Emissions In Less Developed Countries, Julius Mcgee, Richard York
Asymmetric Relationship Of Urbanization And Co2 Emissions In Less Developed Countries, Julius Mcgee, Richard York
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Understanding the relationship between carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the urbanization of national populations has been a key concern for environmental scholars for several decades. Although sophisticated modeling techniques have been developed to explore the connection between increases in urban populations and CO2 emissions, none has attempted to assess whether declines in urbanization have an effect on emissions that is not symmetrical with that of growth in urbanization. The present study uses panel data on CO2 emissions and the percentage of individuals living in urban areas, as well as a variety of other structural factors, for …
The 'Land Of Opportunity' Or The Land That Makes Us The Opportunity: An Examination Of Latinx For-Profit Choice Within The Central San Joaquin Valley, Joe A. Vasquez
Doctoral Dissertations
The San Joaquin Valley in Central California is known as an abundant agricultural epicenter with an extensive history of farming, migration, and political movements. Though this geography holds a rich representation of agricultural economy, it is also the site of major inequalities and underrepresentation, especially with regard to post-secondary education within its overrepresented Latinx population. Further amplifying the inequalities around post-secondary education and Latinx’s is the increasing occurrence of post-secondary enrollment into for-profit institutions by this population. Inequities associated with for-profit enrollment, such as high student loan debt and lack of career attainment, further stratify this geography classified as being …

Purpose: The most prominent change that is seen now is that higher education institutions are under pressure prove their usefulness, objectives, and methods of achieving these objectives. They are also asked for details related to the allocation of their resources and priorities and are also asked to fulfill their social responsibilities. Everyone, from prospective students to the general public, now wants data and proof in favor of the effectiveness and necessity of these institutions. Because of this, higher education institutions are now more involved in the race of securing funding and win over potential customers. In this race, they …

A Leak In The Pipeline: College In Jail From The Participants’ Perspective, Kathy Mora
Student Theses
Offering college-level coursework to people in correctional facilities has proven to be a good investment in reducing recidivism and violence, however, how incarcerated students evaluate ‘prison to college pipeline’ programs, and how they access education after release is less understood. This study is a participant-observation approach with semi-structured surveys of a college class in Rikers Island that aims to answer the question: How do incarcerate students describe their experience with college in jail and their post-release plans to continue their education? This study uses 25 surveys of persons who participated in a college program in Rikers Island. A significant theme …
