The Micro-Politics Of A New Mental Condition: Legitimization In Maladaptive Daydreamers' Discourse, Orit Bershtling Ph.D., Eli Somer Ph.D. Aug 2018

The Micro-Politics Of A New Mental Condition: Legitimization In Maladaptive Daydreamers' Discourse, Orit Bershtling Ph.D., Eli Somer Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

This study illuminates legitimization efforts in the discourse of individuals who suffer from excessive, uncontrolled daydreaming: a contested mental condition that has not yet been recognized by the medical establishment. It aims to explore the rhetorical maneuvers employed by these “Maladaptive Daydreamers” in 35 email exchanges with the second author and two petitions, submitted to the American Psychiatric Association and to the UK Parliament, with a demand for recognition. Our analysis, anchored theoretically and methodologically in Critical Discourse Analysis, identified several verbal strategies employed by the participants to persuade their interlocutors about the realness of their suffering. The main strategies …

What Open-Ended Comments Reveal: An Analysis Of A Clinical Translational Science Institute’S Annual Surveys, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Xiaoying Feng Aug 2018

What Open-Ended Comments Reveal: An Analysis Of A Clinical Translational Science Institute’S Annual Surveys, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Xiaoying Feng

The Qualitative Report

Analyzing open-ended responses can provide insight regarding participants’ experiences or illuminate organizational issues. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze 1096 open-ended responses to a longitudinal survey and report patterns observed across participants. Word frequency, text search and matrix coding were used to analyze the data. Thematic differences were noted by the college group denoting the participant’s primary appointment. Although perceived gaps between expectations and service delivery were expected, participants’ statements pointed out informational inaccuracies or an absence of awareness. The inherent richness and insight of the analysis yielded complexities, otherwise not discernable using quantitative analyses. The …

Opinions As Colors: A Visual Analysis Technique For Modest Focus Group Transcripts, Oladokun -. Omojola -, Oscar Odiboh, Lanre Amodu Aug 2018

Opinions As Colors: A Visual Analysis Technique For Modest Focus Group Transcripts, Oladokun -. Omojola -, Oscar Odiboh, Lanre Amodu

The Qualitative Report

A major concern in focus group research is how transcripts are analyzed. One way of resolving the issues involved is the use of images, in the place of words or numbers, to capture discussion outcomes. This work upgrades the visual perspective and uses colors to represent discussants’ opinions about leadership while the strength of those opinions is illustrated by some levels of transparency of those same colors. This model simplifies the expertise needed by enabling speedy determination of discussants’ submissions even as the transparencies, in the form of shades or tints, reveal the gravity of those submissions.

The Relationship Between Core Knowledge Sequence Curriculum And Smarter Balance Assessment English Language Arts Scores, Melissa Meyer Aug 2018

The Relationship Between Core Knowledge Sequence Curriculum And Smarter Balance Assessment English Language Arts Scores, Melissa Meyer

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study was to examine student achievement as measured by the English language arts (ELA) Smarter Balance Assessment (SBAC) between students who were taught the Core Knowledge Sequence curriculum and students taught the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Journeys curriculum. The 11,493 participants were third through sixth grade students in the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017 school years. The study used a multiple regression model to examine the extent to which the students’ gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), disability status, English language learner (ELL) status, and curriculum predicted SBAC ELA scores. The findings of this study suggest that curriculum did …

Opencrimemapping.Org: An Online Tool For Visualizing Crime, Michael Crowder, Lauren Darr, Gerardo Garza, Brent Allen

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper we present a method for creating geographic visualizations of criminal incidents using open data and open-source software. The motivation for this method is to provide law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and interested citizens an affordable and relatively easy way to start analyzing geospatial data. The National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is a national standard for LEA incident reporting going into effect for all 18,000 U.S. LEAs in 2021. This project uses the Dallas Police Department's publicly available, NIBRS-style, incident data to develop a geovisual analysis tool called opencrimemapping.org.

Random Forest Vs Logistic Regression: Binary Classification For Heterogeneous Datasets, Kaitlin Kirasich, Trace Smith, Bivin Sadler Aug 2018

Random Forest Vs Logistic Regression: Binary Classification For Heterogeneous Datasets, Kaitlin Kirasich, Trace Smith, Bivin Sadler

SMU Data Science Review

Selecting a learning algorithm to implement for a particular application on the basis of performance still remains an ad-hoc process using fundamental benchmarks such as evaluating a classifier’s overall loss function and misclassification metrics. In this paper we address the difficulty of model selection by evaluating the overall classification performance between random forest and logistic regression for datasets comprised of various underlying structures: (1) increasing the variance in the explanatory and noise variables, (2) increasing the number of noise variables, (3) increasing the number of explanatory variables, (4) increasing the number of observations. We developed a model evaluation tool capable …

Puerto Rican Cultural Arts And Expressive Arts Therapies: Mental Health And Collective Resilience Post-Hurricane Maria, Stephanie Soler-Martinez Aug 2018

Puerto Rican Cultural Arts And Expressive Arts Therapies: Mental Health And Collective Resilience Post-Hurricane Maria, Stephanie Soler-Martinez

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The research aimed to study how integrating Puerto Rican popular cultural arts with the expressive arts therapies could assist the recovery process post Hurricane Maria. During post-disaster recovery efforts, access to formal psychological services are not always viable to survivors and the services available are usually not enough to cover the demand. The literature review examined the relationship between: mental health in the aftermath of natural disasters; cultural relevancy within the field of psychology in Puerto Rico; resilience in post-disaster communities; and psychosocial community interventions. Findings encouraged for programing for Puerto Rico’s psychosocial recovery from Hurricane Maria, or any future …

The Development Of Young Children’S Social Identity In An Era Of Digital Tools, Sharon Rochelle Kaplan-Berkley Aug 2018

The Development Of Young Children’S Social Identity In An Era Of Digital Tools, Sharon Rochelle Kaplan-Berkley

Educational Studies Dissertations

The advancement of innovative digital technologies has created a generation of digital natives (children) growing up in a diverse environment designed by a population of digital immigrants (adults). Consequently, this everyday experience has created some dissonance in their lifestyles, raising questions for educational leaders. The purpose of this mini-ethnographic case study was to develop a deeper understanding of how engaging with digital tools shapes the social interactions of young children, and to examine the various ways online/offline social environments influence face-to-face social peer group formation and functioning. Furthermore, this study explored whether digital technology influences the developing social identities of …

School Shouldn’T End When The Bell Rings: An Exploratory Homeschooling Study, Mackenzie Dukelow

MA Research Paper

Homeschooling has experienced significant growth over the last several decades, yet little to no research has explored the relationship between homeschoolers and the public education system. Being the first to explore this relationship, the current study collected and examined data from 3 semi-structured interviews and 15 online homeschooling blogs in order to understand the growth of homeschooling in Ontario and the relationship between homeschooling and the public education system. The results of this study reveal the relationship between homeschoolers and the public education system varies significantly over time and locale, the challenges within each system and the difficulty of transitioning …

Tribal Margins: Dalit Belonging And State Recognition In The Western Himalayas, Steven Christopher Johnson Aug 2018

Tribal Margins: Dalit Belonging And State Recognition In The Western Himalayas, Steven Christopher Johnson

Dissertations - ALL

Tribal Margins analyzes the project of tribal fashioning in the Western Himalayas against the backdrop of affirmative action politics. Specifically, it unpacks the discursive loop between government-administered ethnological paradigms for positive discrimination and its effects on ethnic belonging and spirituality.

These dynamics are located among the Gaddis of Himachal Pradesh, a heterogeneous tribal/Dalit community traditionally associated with transhumant pastoralism on both sides of the Dhauladhar Mountains. The 2002 awarding of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to only high-caste Kangra Gaddis has instigated a range of tribalizing strategies from Dalit groups who identity as Gaddi and are partially assimilated into tribal life. …

How Military Service Influences The Transition To Adulthood Among Post-911 Young Adult Female Veterans With Service Related Disabilities, Gary Shaheen Aug 2018

How Military Service Influences The Transition To Adulthood Among Post-911 Young Adult Female Veterans With Service Related Disabilities, Gary Shaheen

Dissertations - ALL

Over 280,000 female servicemembers have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and a significant number of them are experiencing hidden and/or visible wounds of war. Recent reports indicate that female servicemembers have service-connected disability ratings higher than that of their male counterparts. Female servicemembers often find themselves negotiating roles that are at once ‘inside’ as well as ‘outside’ of a hierarchical, proscribed military institution whose rituals, norms, and hierarchies privilege males in positions of power. Their transition to adulthood as young veterans with service-related disabilities, within a present-day civilian society that can be more ambiguous and discontinuous than in …

Synergy Between Green Supply Chain Management And Green Information Systems On Corporate Sustainability: An Informal Alignment Perspective, Zhaojun Yang, Jun Sun, Yali Zhang, Ying Wang Aug 2018

Synergy Between Green Supply Chain Management And Green Information Systems On Corporate Sustainability: An Informal Alignment Perspective, Zhaojun Yang, Jun Sun, Yali Zhang, Ying Wang

Information Systems Faculty Publications

At the corporate level, green innovation is essential for environment protection and sustainable development. Green supply chain management (GSCM) and green information system (GIS) are two important pillars of green innovation. This study investigates the possible alignment between them in terms of the synergistic effect on corporate sustainability. Based on the task-technology fit model, GSCM and GIS can be viewed as the task- and technology-side endeavors. The extant conceptualization of the fit between a task and a technology assumes their interdependence, but efficiency-oriented GSCM and technology-driven GIS are relatively independent from each other as they can be carried out separately. …

Narrating Political Disability Identity, Steven J. Singer Aug 2018

Narrating Political Disability Identity, Steven J. Singer

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation documented the political disability identities of nine disabled adults. It also explored how these disabled adults enacted their political disability identities. I used narrative analysis to analyze the data, which included life history interviews and the authoring of memoirs. From these memoirs, the participants (Narrators) and I selected critical moments in the formation of the political disability identities. The findings show Narrators shifted or shaped their political identities when strangers pushed them beyond their personal limits by spouting ableist norms. Narrators also developed their political disability identities when they had access to political discourse and the relative freedom …

Grasping The Third Rail: When And Why Does Unpopular Welfare Retrenchment Occur?, Bernadette Lamontagne Aug 2018

Grasping The Third Rail: When And Why Does Unpopular Welfare Retrenchment Occur?, Bernadette Lamontagne

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent unpopular reforms across Europe have invigorated a longstanding debate around what provokes welfare state change in advanced industrialized democracies. Is welfare state retrenchment a result of right-wing parties in power or is it simply a universal response to “problem pressures”? Might there be an interactive effect between these variables, in which right-wing parties use moments of pressure as opportunities to retrench? This study focuses on a set of the most theoretically intriguing of social welfare cutbacks: those demonstrably unpopular to the majority of the voting public and therefore most dangerous to politicians risky who voted out for unpopular policies. …

What Difference Can It Make? Assessing The Impact Of Gender Equality And Empowerment In Matters Of Inheritance In Egypt, Yasmin Khodary Aug 2018

What Difference Can It Make? Assessing The Impact Of Gender Equality And Empowerment In Matters Of Inheritance In Egypt, Yasmin Khodary

Political Science

Denying women their right to inheritance is a problem that has been ongoing in some parts of Egypt for too long. The chances of disallowing women their inheritance increase when this includes agricultural land, which rural areas in Egypt perceive as the “domain of men.” Using mixed methods, this research analyzes the impact of obtaining inheritances on the lives of women and their families and explores the activities that are most influential in increasing women’s chances of attaining their inheritances. The research finds that gender equality and empowerment in matters of inheritance lead to measurable improvements in women’s lives, as …

Workplace Bullying, Disability And Chronic Ill Health, Do Lewis, R Deakin, F Mcgregor Aug 2018

Workplace Bullying, Disability And Chronic Ill Health, Do Lewis, R Deakin, F Mcgregor

Plymouth Business School

This chapter considers how and why people with disabilities, impairments and chronic ill health report being subjected to bullying at work. Against a global environment that is reporting increases in working age, elongated access to workplace pensions as well as a growth in insecure work, workplaces of the future are increasingly likely to encompass increasing numbers of workers who are more likely to have some form of impairment or chronic ill health. Aside from gender and race, workplace bullying researchers have generally been slow to embrace diverse workplace populations with very little data on the experiences of people classified as …

Race, Xenophobia, And Punitiveness Among The American Public, Joseph O. Baker, David Cañarte, L. Edward Day Aug 2018

Race, Xenophobia, And Punitiveness Among The American Public, Joseph O. Baker, David Cañarte, L. Edward Day

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

We outline four connections between xenophobia and punitiveness toward criminals in a national sample of Americans. First, among self-identified whites xenophobia is more predictive of punitiveness than specific forms of racial animus. Second, xenophobia and punitiveness are strongly connected among whites, but are only moderately and weakly related among black and Hispanic Americans, respectively. Third, among whites substantial proportions of the variance between sociodemographic, political, and religious predictors of punitiveness are mediated by levels of xenophobia. Finally, xenophobia is the strongest overall predictor of punitiveness among whites. Overall, xenophobia is an essential aspect of understanding public punitiveness, particularly among whites.
