Imagining Demons In Post-Byzantine Jerusalem: John Of Damascus And The Consolidation Of Classical Christian Demonology, Nathaniel Ogden Kidd Oct 2018

Imagining Demons In Post-Byzantine Jerusalem: John Of Damascus And The Consolidation Of Classical Christian Demonology, Nathaniel Ogden Kidd

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation traces the consolidation of a classical Christian framework for demonology in the theological corpus of John of Damascus (c. 675 – c. 750), an eighth century Greek theologian writing in Jerusalem. When the Damascene sat down to write, I argue, there was a great variety of demonological options available to him, both in the depth of the Christian tradition, and in the ambient local imagination. John’s genius lies first in what he chose not to include, but second in his ability to synthesize a minimalistic demonology out of a complex body of material and integrate it into a …

Sociology Faculty Works

This study uses mixed-methods data and a life-course perspective to explore the role of pets in the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adults age 50 and over and addresses the following research questions: (1) How does having a pet relate to perceived social support and social network size? and (2) how do LGBT older adults describe the meaning of pets in their lives? The qualitative data (N = 59) were collected from face-to-face interviews, and the quantitative data (N = 2,560) were collected via surveys from a sample across the United States. Qualitative findings show that pets …

Interrogating The Intersections: How Intersectional Perspectives Can Inform Developmental Scholarship On Critical Consciousness, Erin B. Godfrey, Esther Burson Oct 2018

Interrogating The Intersections: How Intersectional Perspectives Can Inform Developmental Scholarship On Critical Consciousness, Erin B. Godfrey, Esther Burson

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Developmental psychologists widely recognize that the social structures and inequities of American society influence youth development. A burgeoning body of research also considers how youth marginalized by society critically evaluate societal inequities and take action to change them (critical consciousness, Freire [Education for critical consciousness (Vol. 1). Bloomsbury Publishing.]), suggesting that marginalized youth who are more critically conscious experience improved mental health and better educational and occupational outcomes and are more engaged in traditional forms of civic behavior. The current manuscript critically reviews and extends this area of research from an intersectional perspective. Drawing from core writings in …

Communication Between Home And School For Parents Of Children With Chronic Illness, Keri Edwards Oct 2018

Communication Between Home And School For Parents Of Children With Chronic Illness, Keri Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

A child with chronic illness has a physical or behavioral condition that affects the child’s daily functioning, lasts longer than three months, and requires medical intervention such as medication, hospitalizations, and/or home care (Newacheck, McManus, & Fox, 2001). Chronic illness interferes with all areas of development, including physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, and a growing number of children with chronic illnesses are attending school. Effective communication between parents and educators is essential so that accurate information about the nature and extent of the impact of chronic illness on children’s learning experiences and schooling can be shared and appropriate supports …

Examining The Entrepreneurial Leadership Propensities Of Extension Educators, Ashley Jeffers-Sample, Matthew M. Mars, Amber H. Rice, Robert M. Torres

Journal of Extension

Innovation and entrepreneurship are integral to the development and vitality of contemporary communities and economies. Accordingly, entrepreneurial leadership is directly relevant to the Extension education mission. Yet research examining the entrepreneurial leadership propensities of Extension educators is scant. We applied a survey design to analyze the entrepreneurial leadership propensities of Extension educators throughout Arizona using two constructs: innovation and entrepreneurial strategy. The data revealed modest levels of entrepreneurial leadership propensities across the sample. Recommendations aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial leadership propensities of Extension educators are provided.

Nineteen Minutes Of Horror: Insights From The Scorpions Execution Video, Iva Vukušić Oct 2018

Nineteen Minutes Of Horror: Insights From The Scorpions Execution Video, Iva Vukušić

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

After the fall of Srebrenica in summer of 1995, the Scorpions unit, dispatched to support the Bosnian Serb Army as it took over the enclave, shot six men in Trnovo. The men, three of whom were underage, were some of thousands of Bosnian Muslims that fell into the hands of Bosnian Serb troops, and that were executed in the days and weeks following July 11th. A member of the unit filmed the execution. Fragments of the video were first shown during the Slobodan Milosevic trial, and multiple times in the years after, in the courtrooms in The Hague and Belgrade. …

El Mocito: A Study Of Cruelty At The Intersection Of Chile’S Military And Civil Society, Ana Laura Ros Oct 2018

El Mocito: A Study Of Cruelty At The Intersection Of Chile’S Military And Civil Society, Ana Laura Ros

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Twenty-five years after the end of the Chilean military dictatorship (1973-1990), the redemocratization process still has not drawn to a close. The persistent tensions in civil-military relations have sparked the concern of national and international human rights organizations and have even begun to occupy a space in the country’s cultural production. In this article, I will focus on El mocito (Marcela Said and Jacques de Certau, 2011). This film tackles Chile’s dictatorial past through the perspective of a civilian who was closely connected to the Armed Forces. It addresses the case of an individual living on the border between worlds …

The Unbribable Witness: Image, Word, And Testimony Of Crimes Against Humanity In Mark Twain’S King Leopold’S Soliloquy (1905), Nora Nunn Oct 2018

The Unbribable Witness: Image, Word, And Testimony Of Crimes Against Humanity In Mark Twain’S King Leopold’S Soliloquy (1905), Nora Nunn

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

In the creation of King Leopold’s Soliloquy, a textured, visually irrefutable, and darkly satirical account of crimes against humanity in the Belgian Congo Free State, Mark Twain aimed to evoke his Euro-American audience’s empathy by activating their imaginations and inaugurating political reform. Informed by the work of cultural and literary critics such as Roland Barthes, this paper considers how the visual imagery in Twain’s text engender questions about fact, testimony, and witnessing in the realm of human rights and collective violence—both in the Congo Free State and, indirectly, in the United States. I ultimately argue that the relation (or …

Challenging Old And New Images Representing The Cambodian Genocide: The Missing Picture (Rithy Panh, 2013), Vicente Sánchez-Biosca Oct 2018

Challenging Old And New Images Representing The Cambodian Genocide: The Missing Picture (Rithy Panh, 2013), Vicente Sánchez-Biosca

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article focuses on the images used over four decades to represent the Cambodian genocide in photography, cinema, visual arts and the media as the basis for analyzing the documentary-memoir directed by Rithy Panh, The Missing Picture. First, there is a paucity of images which depict, evoke or allude to the crimes perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979); second, scholars raise objections about whether any image can adequately depict a catastrophic event such as genocide. This article begins by categorizing the Cambodian genocide iconography according to the modality of the visual production. After briefly classifying this visual output in four …

Gender Performativity And Hegemonic Masculinity In Investment Management, Corina Sheerin, Prof. Margaret Linehan Oct 2018

Gender Performativity And Hegemonic Masculinity In Investment Management, Corina Sheerin, Prof. Margaret Linehan

Applied Social Studies

Purpose

Through an examination of the everyday organisational and social practices, this paper aims to consider gender performativity and hegemonic masculinity within front office investment management. At the core of this research is the need to understand the interactions between gender, power and patriarchy.

Design/methodology/approach

An interpretivist philosophical stance underpins the study. A theory-building approach using 19 semi-structured interviews with investment management employees based in Ireland was undertaken.

Findings

The findings highlight a sector in which gender is performed in line with sectoral expectations, which place men in positions of dominance with hegemonic masculinity inherent. The organisational structures and daily …

Immigration Blame, David S. Rubenstein Oct 2018

Immigration Blame, David S. Rubenstein

Fordham Law Review

This Article provides the first comprehensive study of blame in the U.S. immigration system. Beyond blaming migrants, we blame politicians, bureaucrats, and judges. Meanwhile, these players routinely blame each other, all while trying to avoid being blamed. As modeled here, these dynamics of “immigration blame” have catalyzing effects on the politics, policies, and structures of immigration law. Yoking key insights from a range of social sciences, this Article offers unique perspectives on the operation and design choices of the immigration system. Moreover, through a blame lens, the terms of debate over amnesty, immigration enforcement, the travel ban, sanctuary cities, and …

Marginalized Migrants And Urbanization In Southeast Asia, George Wong, George Wong Oct 2018

Marginalized Migrants And Urbanization In Southeast Asia, George Wong, George Wong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Asia is now the region with the largest movements of migrants in the world. International migration within Asia accounts for a significant proportion of those mobilities, with Southeast Asia a highly popular destination region. Within this zone, Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia receive the highest levels of migrants. The city-state of Singapore, however, tops the list, with the highest total population of international migrant arrivals, and about 53 per cent of its foreign resident population coming from other parts of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. Most migrants who move transnationally migrate to engage in low waged dirty, dangerous and …

Corporate Governance And Bankruptcy, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Oct 2018

Corporate Governance And Bankruptcy, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Ordinary corporate law invests enormous authority in corporate leaders, largely without accountability either to those they govern or to the judiciary, in defiance of much of what we know about effective governance procedure. Instead, we rely on the markets in which the corporation participates as the primary check on incumbent officials. Regardless of whether relying on markets is sufficient in the ordinary course, corporate insolvency is the markets’ verdict that incumbent management has failed. Accordingly, in bankruptcy and insolvency more generally, the law ought to abandon its ordinary deference to the corporate powers that be and instead impose standard good …

A Systematic Literature Review Of Individuals' Perspectives On Privacy And Genetic Information In The United States, Ellen W. Clayton, Colin M. Halverson, Nila A. Sathe, Bradley A. Malin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Concerns about genetic privacy affect individuals' willingness to accept genetic testing in clinical care and to participate in genomics research. To learn what is already known about these views, we conducted a systematic review, which ultimately analyzed 53 studies involving the perspectives of 47,974 participants on real or hypothetical privacy issues related to human genetic data. Bibliographic databases included MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, and Sociological Abstracts. Three investigators independently screened studies against predetermined criteria and assessed risk of bias. The picture of genetic privacy that emerges from this systematic literature review is complex and riddled with gaps. When asked specifically …

Household And Block Level Influences On Residential Fertilizer Use, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Amanda Carrico, Urooj Raja, James C. Fraser Oct 2018

Household And Block Level Influences On Residential Fertilizer Use, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Amanda Carrico, Urooj Raja, James C. Fraser

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Urban and suburban lawns make up a large share of land use in the US. Maintaining lawns to fulfill aesthetic norms has environmental consequences. In this analysis, we examine household decisions to apply nitrogen-containing lawn fertilizer. Using survey data of 298 households in Nashville, Tennessee, we first examine the prevalence of fertilizer use and the rate of annual nitrogen applied. We find that the resulting distribution is skewed, with the top 20% of the sample applying 56% of the total share of nitrogen. In contrast to this subset of “intensive” fertilizers, 93% of households applied at or below levels recommended …

The Impact Of The Gender Of The Coach On The Type Of Motivational Climate That Is Established On A College Athletics Team, Zola Pieterse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to investigate the connection between the gender of the coach and the perceived motivational climate that is established on a college sports team. Eighty-eight athletes completed the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (PMCSQ-2) to assess their perceptions of the motivational climate that is established on a college sports team. The study further investigated the influence of the gender of the athlete, as well as the athlete's preference for either an Ego-oriented or Task-oriented motivational climate. No statistically significant correlation were found between the gender of the coach, the gender of the athlete, and …

Rape Culture: Is This The College Experience?, Kayla Hoang Oct 2018

Rape Culture: Is This The College Experience?, Kayla Hoang

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Rape culture is a relentless cycle that remains very prevalent on college campuses. Rape culture, as best defined in Transforming a Rape Culture, is a culture in which male aggression and violence towards women is essentially purely sexual and normalized (Buchwald). It refers to the way college students interact, the sexual objectifications they project onto each other, and the way it is dealt with. Scholars have done an excellent job of establishing the root causes of rape culture. Those roots are gender roles, such as toxic masculinity and the forcing of all responsibility onto females (Bay-Cheng and Eliseo- Arras; Jozkowski …
