Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
As 2018 draws to a close I present a holiday offering for our readers, an abbreviated international issue with submissions from the People’s Republic of China and Australia. After putting out a call for “submissions that expand the notion of leadership” and featuring several in our last issue, here are two international perspectives on the changing shape of leadership.
Middle East Media Landscapes: Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, And Yemen, Cody J. Baker
Middle East Media Landscapes: Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, And Yemen, Cody J. Baker
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Following the youth-led reformative wave that swept the Middle East in 2011 during what came to be known as the Arab Spring, the media landscape in the region has continued to diversify and change alongside technology and social media. However, in order to deal with a large youth demographic that is seeking increased civil liberties and equality, and to prevent another series of protests, many governments are placing restrictions and limitations on the press, internet access, and censoring individuals who are critical of government or politically active. Through a critical analysis of the current media landscapes of five nations; Egypt, …

“No Happy Woman Writes”: An Analysis Of Novels Of Seduction And Domestic Fiction In Early American Literature, Janene Johnson
“No Happy Woman Writes”: An Analysis Of Novels Of Seduction And Domestic Fiction In Early American Literature, Janene Johnson
Honors Program Theses and Projects
American novelists writing in the new Republic contributed to a collective cultural effort to create a new written voice. Writers in the new nation aimed to develop a style of writing distinct from the contemporary European conventions, one that would reflect American ideals and society. Though increasing in popularity during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, novels and fictional works received an inauspicious stigma that marked the works, authors, and often even readers of the genre. Twentieth-century scholars of the early American novel denounced the genre as simply melodramatic romantic work that would not improve the intellect of the …

In the paper we examine how telecommunications customers perceive fairness during complaint resolution and what is the impact of fairness perception on customer loyalty. Using multiple-regression we analyze data from a survey of 217 telecommunication customers, who had recent experience with the complaint process. Two regression models confirm the importance of perceived fairness in handling telecommunications’ customers complaints. Individual dimensions of perceived fairness positively affect the intention to maintain the relationship and willingness to spread positive word of mouth about the provider. Specifically, informational and distributive fairness have a positive effect both on intention to maintain the relationships and positive …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
I focus on the diaspora of the Australian immigration to the South American colony known as New Australia. My project addresses the question of identity. I address questions such as: how much do the surviving descendants of the New Australia colony identify with the homeland of Australia or the hostland of South America? How has their identities influenced the way they raise their children

Entwined Threads Of Red And Black: The Hidden History Of Indigenous Enslavement In Louisiana, 1699-1824, Leila K. Blackbird
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Contrary to nationalist teleologies, the enslavement of Native Americans was not a small and isolated practice in the territories that now comprise the United States. This thesis is a case study of its history in Louisiana from European contact through the Early American Period, utilizing French Superior Council and Spanish judicial records, Louisiana Supreme Court case files, statistical analysis of slave records, and the synthesis and reinterpretation of existing scholarship. This paper primarily argues that it was through anti-Blackness and anti-Indigeneity and with the utilization of socially constructed racial designations that “Indianness” was controlled and exploited, and that Native Americans …

“Drinking” About The Past: Bar Culture In Antebellum New Orleans, Mindy M. Jarrett
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Women in antebellum New Orleans have often been memorialized as Voudou queens, slave-torturers who continue to haunt houses, prostitutes, and light-skinned concubines to wealthy, white men. This study focuses on women’s contribution to New Orleans’s economy through the hospitality industry as female bar owners from 1830-1861. In addition, it provides an overview of the role that alcohol and beverage consumption patterns played among men and women of all races, classes, and cultural backgrounds in antebellum New Orleans. Antebellum tourists, in addition to cotton and sugar, were an important source of income for many New Orleanians before the Civil War. As …

Life In Balance: The Work-Life Balance Stories Of Black Female School Leaders, Jaime Mecholle Johnson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the work-life balance experiences of Black females school leaders. Due to the inherent intersectionality of race and gender that is experienced by Black females, a study of their unique experiences with work-life balance is valuable to the field of educational leadership. The responsibilities associated with school leadership positions are extensive and those school leaders who also have spouses and children must figure out a way to fulfill responsibilities associated with each role. Work-life balance is important to understand for school leaders whose career responsibilities may interact with those associated with their personal …
Seeing Red: Immigration And Asymmetrical Partisan Polarization In The United States, Robert M. Worth
Seeing Red: Immigration And Asymmetrical Partisan Polarization In The United States, Robert M. Worth
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Since the mid-1970s, partisan polarization has been increasing in Congress and the Presidency, and, although most voters lack a stable, consistent ideology, non-ideological forms of partisan polarization have emerged in the mass public in recent decades. Moreover, ideological polarization among elites is highly asymmetrical, with increased Republican conservatism accounting for most of the increased ideological distance between the parties. Here, I develop a racial-threat backlash theory and argue that increased rates of immigration are associated with increased asymmetrical ideological polarization among elites and in the mass public. Tests of this theory on voters, the mass public in the states, state …

Communication, Democracy, And Intelligentsia, Dmitri N. Shalin
Sociology Faculty Research
In the early 1990s, a group of Russian and American scholars teamed up to investigate the impact of Gorbachev’s reform on Soviet society, focusing especially on the role the intelligentsia played in fomenting glasnost and perestroika. Results of this collaborative study were published in a volume Russian Culture at the Crossroads: Paradoxes of Postcommunist Consciousness (Shalin, 1996a). The contributors worked on the assumption that perestroika was an irreversible achievement, that distortions the reforms wrought in Russian society would be smoothed out over time. Today, this assumption appears overoptimistic. After nearly twenty years in power, Vladimir Putin dismantled key democratic institutions, …

Economic and Business Review
The purpose of this study is to analyse the role of the work-engagement between the perceptions of team cohesiveness and the quality of human resources management (HRM) on one side, and the effect on athlete’s contribution to team performance on the other. The results based on the structural model equations and the Sobel’s tests confirm that the perceptions of the HRM quality and cohesion predict the degree of athlete’s work-engagement. The latter then mediates the effects of the HRM and cohesion on the athlete’s perception of his contribution to team performance. At the same time, the results show that the …

Traditional Crafts, Diversity Of Social Modes And Higher Education, Dong Xiaoping
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Chinese government has recently enacted documents to revitalize the traditional crafts, determining this significant task from a strategic perspective. Most scientific and technical scholars as well as the ones of humanities and social science should seize this unprecedented historical opportunity, base upon the situation of China, strengthen modern science consciousness, establish the social system of technology and culture which focuses on the sinological value of traditional Chinese craft and forms a style of its own, and extract the solid and distinctive vitality elements including state system technology, value system technology, social structure technology, cultural narrative or Chinese story technology, and …

When Students Drive Design: Creating A Family Study Room For Students Who Are Parents, Jennifer F. Paustenbaugh, C. Jeffrey Belliston
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The paper focuses on a user-centered design project in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU). BYU students who are parents comprise about 25% of the student population. University leaders have a goal for students to graduate in fewer semesters. Some students—especially females—drop out of school upon becoming a parent. Other students delay graduation by taking fewer classes in order to attend to their parental duties. Student parents who use the library frequently did not feel welcome when accompanied by their children. Oftentimes the parents elected not to use the library as the study resource it was …

Evaluating Evaluative Bibliometrics: A Case Study Of Two Research Groups, Jimi Thaule, Marte Strand
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Bibliometrics is a method increasingly used to perform evaluations of scientific output and impact, in particular in order to distribute means, such as research grants. But also internally within universities and other research institutions. Various performance and impact meaures are used to establish quality of research. This can be highly problematic, not only in terms of ethics, but also with regards to method. Especially considering the proliferation of tools to perform bibliometric analysis, which means that analyses are increasingly performed without actual understanding of bibliometrics as a scientific method. In our research we have compared two research groups in the …

Building Library-Based Support Structures For Open Science, Henrik Karlstrøm, Ingrid Heggland
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Research institutions meet increasing demands for transparency, accountability, added value and reuse of all aspects of scientific production, from documenting the research process to sharing underlying data to open access to publications. Going beyond admirable slogans about openness there is a clear need for support infrastructures relating to the actual practice of Open Science – describing metadata, archiving datasets and publications and disseminating increasingly interdisciplinary research results. Research libraries, having always been stewards of research institutions’ collective knowledge and offering a variety of research support services, are in a unique position to offer future support for Open Science based on …

A Digital Information Literacy Course For University Teachers: Challenges And Possibilities, Katri Rintamäki, Anne Lehto
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In Finland, digitalization is taken as the basis for the development of education: for creating new kinds of learning resources, learning environments, and pedagogy. From primary schools to universities, digital learning is essential. In digital learning, libraries play an important role. University libraries spend most of their acquisition budget on digital information resources and actively promote high-quality open access resources. In digital learning, the libraries and librarians' expertise in digital information resources, in information and digital literacies, and in open research and open science, are vital. Information literacy education for students, even information literacy courses included in the curricula, is …

Like A Jar Of Flies? A Study Of Self-Control In An Organizational Social Dilemma With Large Stakes, Matthew W. Mccarter, Jonathan R. Clark, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Abel Winn
Business Faculty Articles and Research
We study the practice of self-control in an organizational social dilemma when the stakes are large, using 47 years of vital census data from 18th century Sweden. From 1750 to 1800, eighty percent of Sweden lived in a simple-structure organization called a bytvång or village commons. The amount of resources a village family received was a function of their size. During this period, crop failures left the population facing starvation. Using autoregressive time-series modeling, we test whether the people of Sweden continued to take steps toward increasing the stress on the commons by marrying and birthing children or practiced …

Is Individualism-Collectivism Associated With Self-Control? Evidence From Chinese And U.S. Samples, Jian-Bin Li, Alexander T. Vazsonyi, Kai Dou
Family Sciences Faculty Publications
Self-control plays an important role in human’s daily life. In the recent two decades, scholars have exerted tremendous effort to examine the etiologies of the individual differences in self-control. Among numerous predictors of self-control, the role of culture has been relatively overlooked. In this study, the influences of cultural orientation on self-control were examined based on the collectivism-individualism framework using both self-report and behavioral task to assess self-control. A convenience sample of 542 Chinese and 446 U.S. undergraduates participated in the research. They were invited to fill out self-report questionnaires reporting their levels of attitudinal self-control and individualistic-collectivistic orientation after …

Re-Evaluating The Demise Of The Average, Ordinary, Reasonable Person: Unintended Consequences In The Law Of Nuisance, George P. Smith & William P. Lane
Catholic University Law Review
This Article advocates for a wider pleading use of the tort of nuisance—this, because of the unresolved complexities in the doctrine of causation which continue to plague an effective use of negligence. The confusing awkwardness or, perhaps, the actual demise, of the notion of an average, ordinary, reasonable person so essential to improving negligent wrongdoing has caused aggravation over the years and, indeed, given rise to a state of torbidity.
The judiciary can more easily resolve this evidentiary quagmire by shifting its judicial attention and analysis to the tort of nuisance. With alarming social indicators and statistical projections, confirming the …

Racism: The Leading Cause Of Death In Black Maternal Mortality Rates, Kelsey Ormsby
Student Works
Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related causes in the United States. There are a few factors that play into this statistic, including genetic health conditions and socioeconomic issues. However, racism and unfair treatment towards black women is at the heart of the problem. This issue of racism in the health care system is atrocious for a few reasons — first, because racism is never acceptable in any form and should be eliminated in any and all situations. And second, because this is a problem that is affecting the lives and well-being …

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The literature on neighborhoods and child obesity links contextual conditions to risk, assuming that if place matters, it matters in a similar way for everyone in those places. We explore the extent to which distinctive neighborhood types give rise to social patterning that produces variation in the odds of child obesity. We leverage geocoded electronic medical records for a diverse sample of over 135,000 children aged 2 to 12 and latent profile modeling to characterize places into distinctive neighborhood contexts. Multilevel models with cross-level interactions between neighborhood type and family socioeconomic standing (SES) reveal that children with different SES, but …
