Preoperative Nurses' Teaching For Open Heart Surgery Patients, Sofya Alshvang
Preoperative Nurses' Teaching For Open Heart Surgery Patients, Sofya Alshvang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Every year thousands of patients in the United States undergo cardiothoracic surgery. These patients have high levels of anxiety because they do not know what to expect. At the same time, many nurses on the cardiac telemetry/surgical floor are not aware that effective preoperative teaching can make a significant difference in patients' outcomes; thus, nurses had focused on postoperative teaching. The purpose of this project was to develop a preoperative teaching program through which nurses could help patients undergoing open heart surgery. The mentioned above practice initiative used Neuman's systems model as a framework. The project used a before-and-after design: …
Who Believes In A Male God? Ideological Beliefs And Gendered Conceptualizations Of God, Simon Howard, Debra L. Oswald, Mackenzie S. Kirkman
Who Believes In A Male God? Ideological Beliefs And Gendered Conceptualizations Of God, Simon Howard, Debra L. Oswald, Mackenzie S. Kirkman
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Recent studies have explored whether certain conceptualizations of God are associated with various attitudes and beliefs. In the current study, we examined the relationship between gendered God concepts and the belief that God is involved in one’s life and religious-related rigid ideologies (i.e., religious fundamentalism and right-wing authoritarianism [RWA]). Across two studies, one conducted with religious students at a Jesuit university and the other with a national sample, we found that individuals who believed God to be male were more likely to believe that God had more control and involvement in their life, had higher levels of religious fundamentalism and …
Identity Style Preference And Marriage Among Black Americans, Russell Klumpp
Identity Style Preference And Marriage Among Black Americans, Russell Klumpp
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Blacks marry less and divorce more than any other racial demographic in the United States. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine identity style preferences in relation to attitudes toward marriage and marital satisfaction among Black Americans. Identity style is the way in which a person approaches and processes information that has the potential to affect self-identity. Identity style theory suggests there are three primary styles (informative, normative, and diffuse-avoidant) and that each person will eventually settle upon a preferred style. All participants in this study were United States citizens, over the age of 18, and self-identified as …
Interoperability Performance Among Campus Law Enforcement Agencies, Tammie Ann Massirer
Interoperability Performance Among Campus Law Enforcement Agencies, Tammie Ann Massirer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks exposed considerable breakdowns in communications interoperability and information sharing among first responders. Multijurisdictional responses to the active-shooter incidents at the University of Texas in 2010; Sandy Hook Elementary of Newtown, Connecticut in 2012, and the Reynolds High School shooting of Multnomah County, Oregon in 2014 were replete with interoperability failures as well. Recent multijurisdictional response events continue to illuminate difficulties with first-responder interoperability and minimal research exists to promote understanding of the interoperability challenges of university police departments. The purpose of this study was to explore the barriers that impede communications of campus based …
The Relationship Between Isolation, Distress, And Medical Care Among Transgender Coloradoans, Charles Tinnell
The Relationship Between Isolation, Distress, And Medical Care Among Transgender Coloradoans, Charles Tinnell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Colorado in 2014, suicidal ideation or suicide attempts occurred up to 10 times more frequently among transgender persons than the general population. This reality occurred within a milieu of stigma that included transgender persons' negative perceptions of healthcare, a higher incidence of psychological distress, and an uncertain role for social isolation in their well-being. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the interactions between social isolation, supportive medical care, and psychological distress within the framework of Meyer's minority stress theory. Data were acquired from the 2014 Colorado Transgender Health Survey conducted by the One Colorado Education Fund …

Immunoglobulin Therapy And Primary Immunodeficient Patients' Health-Related Quality Of Life And Well-Being, Niedre Heckman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals born with primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDD) have a dysfunctional immune system, and many are treated by lifelong injections of immunoglobulin therapy. Studies have shown that these patients have low health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and well-being (WB) and that these outcomes might be improved by the availability of therapy innovated according to preferences for fewer needle sticks or a shorter infusion time. Regulators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved therapies innovated per these preferences. However, there is limited data demonstrating how these innovations impact HRQOL and WB. Using the biopsychosocial model, the purpose of …

Social Isolation Risk Among Older Adults Who Live Alone, Nadine Lukes-Dyer
Social Isolation Risk Among Older Adults Who Live Alone, Nadine Lukes-Dyer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As individuals age, their likelihood of experiencing mental and physical problems increases, as does their risk of developing social isolation. Behavioral, physiological, and/or psychological changes are common manifestations of social isolation. Increased morbidity and mortality are the outcome. Ecological systems theory and social baseline theory provided the framework to explore 10 older individuals' perceptions of risk for social isolation and their perceived barriers to social integration. Data for this interpretive phenomenological study were collected from participant diaries, interviews, the 6-item de Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS-6), the Lubben Social Network Scale 6 (LSNS-6), a demographic survey, and a social support …

The purpose of the study was to understand the experiences and perceptions of urban high school educators' pre-service and in-service conflict resolution and violence prevention education, and the student health-related antecedents that contribute to both. Utilizing a case study methodology, this study emphasized the diverse geographic locations of urban high school educators' pre-service institutions and the perceptions of their pre-service and in-service …
Cox-Type Model Validation With Recurrent Event Data, Muna Mohamed Hammuda
Cox-Type Model Validation With Recurrent Event Data, Muna Mohamed Hammuda
Doctoral Dissertations
"Recurrent event data occurs in many disciplines such as actuarial science, biomedical studies, sociology, and environment to name a few. It is therefore important to develop models that describe the dynamic evolution of the event occurrences. One major problem of interest to researchers with these types of data is models for the distribution function of the time between events occurrences, especially in the presence of covariates that play a major role in having a better understanding of time to events.
This work pertains to statistical inference of the regression parameter and the baseline hazard function in a Cox-type model for …

Police Culture And Decision-Making, Larry D. Anthony
Police Culture And Decision-Making, Larry D. Anthony
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Decisions made by street-level police officers during encounters with the public have an immediate and long-lasting effect. Bad choices can cause a loss of trust, respect, and legitimacy for the police in a community and lay a foundation for violent confrontations between officers and citizens. Layers of culture that shape human decisions consist of social and institutional culture, including interactions that shape an individual's culture and beliefs and demographics and technology that affect cultural development. Police culture (which includes these layers of culture and factors like rank, units, and history) shapes attitudes and opinions about communities and people in a …

Experiences Of Interpersonal Interaction Between Nurse Educators And Minority Nursing Students, Debra Boldan
Experiences Of Interpersonal Interaction Between Nurse Educators And Minority Nursing Students, Debra Boldan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Changes in the cultural composition of the United States population are not reflected in the nursing workforce. The lack of diversity in nursing may be due to the unique interpersonal needs of minority nursing students remaining unmet in traditional nursing education programs, which might unintentionally lead to alienation, isolation, and lower graduation rates for minority students. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore interpersonal interaction experiences nursing educators have in teaching minority nursing students. Critical social theory provided the theoretical framework to explore the ways social inquiries may hinder learning and keep marginal groups from reaching their full …
