Focus On Friendship: A Review Of "Why Can't We Be Friends?", Erin Olson Oct 2018

Focus On Friendship: A Review Of "Why Can't We Be Friends?", Erin Olson

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Christians typically assume that the best way to avoid this temptation of engaging in sexual impurity is to avoid anything even resembling friendship with someone of the opposite sex. Byrd, however, argues that avoidance is not purity; it is simply avoidance."

Vasquez V. Foxx: Brief Of Eighteen Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Petitioners, J. J. Prescott Oct 2018

Vasquez V. Foxx: Brief Of Eighteen Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Petitioners, J. J. Prescott

Appellate Briefs

Amici are eighteen scholars across six disciplines whose work includes the leading empirical studies of persons convicted of sexual offenses and the laws applied to them. The Appendix identifies them and describes their work.

Amici believe it critical that judicial decisions affecting constitutional rights be grounded on an accurate understanding of empirical realities. At the very least, they should not propagate misunderstandings. Unfortunately, such misunderstandings are commonplace and often traceable to language in early opinions of this Court. The Seventh Circuit opinion in this case is an example. It relies on mistaken assumptions about both the re-offense risks posed by …

The Price Of Fear: Estimating The Financial Cost Of Bullying To The Nhs In England, R Kline, Do Lewis Oct 2018

The Price Of Fear: Estimating The Financial Cost Of Bullying To The Nhs In England, R Kline, Do Lewis

Plymouth Business School

Using a spectrum of measures, this paper estimates some of the financial costs of bullying and harassment to the NHS in England. By means of specific impacts resulting from bullying and harassment to staff health, sickness absence costs to the employer, employee turnover, diminished productivity, sickness presenteeism, compensation, litigation and industrial relations costs, we conservatively estimate bullying and harassment to cost the taxpayer £2.281 billion per annum. The evidence in this paper indicates the importance of urgent material engagement to address bullying in the UK NHS. Existing staff surveys fail to capture the types of behaviours often attributable to bullying …

Debunking The Myth Of The Efficacy Of “Push-Down Academics”: How Rigid, Teacher-Centered, Academic Early Learning Environments Dis-Empower Young Children, Flora Harmon, Radhika Viruru Oct 2018

Debunking The Myth Of The Efficacy Of “Push-Down Academics”: How Rigid, Teacher-Centered, Academic Early Learning Environments Dis-Empower Young Children, Flora Harmon, Radhika Viruru

Journal of Family Strengths

The increased emphasis on higher academic standards in Early Childhood Education has changed the instructional landscape and developed myths of quality learning. In recent decades, pre and primary schools have begun to focus more on assessments and testing as a determinant of quality learning; this emphasis has led to a shift to “push down academics”, which refers to an increase of academic standards at a younger age (Bassok, Latham, and Rorem, 2016). The concept of “push-down academics” is contrast to the foundational components of early childhood education, which equally values socio-emotional development, academic core concepts, and natural growth (Burman, 2016; …

Pharmacists’ Knowledge Of Social Determinants Of Health In Post-Graduate Pharmacy Residency Programs, Rachel N. Chandra

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Clinical pharmacists and their training programs can play a key role in helping to address social determinants of health (SDoH) by transforming healthcare beyond the traditional clinical approaches. Pharmacists’ knowledge of SDoH in post-graduate residency programs are key skills necessary for creating an impact in healthcare outcomes.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to assess U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) post-graduate residency program directors’ and residents’ knowledge about SDoH. Methods: An IRB exempt questionnaire was created via Survey Monkey (™) and administered to postgraduate pharmacy residents (N = 618) and residency program directors (RPDs) (N = 235) …

Reframing Human Trafficking: From A Criminal Justice Problem To A Social Justice Issue, Rebecca Pfeffer Oct 2018

Reframing Human Trafficking: From A Criminal Justice Problem To A Social Justice Issue, Rebecca Pfeffer

Journal of Family Strengths

Laws addressing human trafficking have been passed in all 50 U.S. states as well as at the federal level. Although laws serve an important function in establishing social norms against a behavior, they can also create a belief that it is the responsibility of law enforcement to curb that behavior. Law enforcement and other actors in the criminal justice system have a critical role to play in addressing the problem of human trafficking, but this is not a problem that they can solve alone. A multipronged strategy engaging the fields of public health, medicine, social work, and criminal justice as …

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

FSU’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement is charged with engaging undergraduates in research and other academic High Impact Practices. This expanded focus allows the integration of research experience within HIPs, especially global engagement, service learning, and innovation/entrepreneurship. While the CRE continues to bolster its community-engaged research efforts, this presentation details our current relationships with campus partners (Center for Leadership and Social Change), the Tallahassee and Florida non-profit and start-up community (UROP), and the global community (Gap Year Fellows/IDEA Grants). The audience will develop ideas for collaborating with partners engaged within communities to support research opportunities for undergraduates.

Exploring Intersecting Program Elements In Longer-Term Concurrent Disorder Services For Adults: A Qualitative Evaluation, Aaron Turpin, Micheal L. Shier Oct 2018

Exploring Intersecting Program Elements In Longer-Term Concurrent Disorder Services For Adults: A Qualitative Evaluation, Aaron Turpin, Micheal L. Shier

The Qualitative Report

Previous research highlights multiple factors that impact the attainment of client-identified recovery goals in substance misuse treatment programs. However, fewer studies examine how programs meet the broad range of needs expressed by clients through their intersecting elements of service delivery. This study seeks to develop an understanding of intersecting program and recovery elements in relation to an overall framework for programming, focusing on how overlapping elements of treatment ventured to support clients in multiple areas of their recovery. Qualitative interviews were conducted with clients (n=41) in three longer term substance use treatment programs, and data from interviews were analysed using …
